In many ways I feel like in Phlox they perfected the sort of jovial wit that Neelix was supposed to have on Voyager. It helps that in Phlox it is paired with an actual field of competence. Something Neelix lacked, which is why he rubbed so many people as obnoxious.

Neelix was annoying, but he was admittedly useful in his own way. His knowledge of the delta quadrant was beyond useful. And his incredible ability to understand cultures was insane. He had the ability to change entire diplomatic discussions. His deep seeded need to feel important aside, there were moments where he just pulled the best hat trick ever and was a successful diplomat. Not to mention, he was a rather capable pilot and engineer. While he never truly adapted to Voyager's tech, he became quite good at maintaining and repairing systems all on the fly. I'd say he adapted better than a human would have done on a talaxian vessel.

That celery was such a great choice for this scene.
They're talking about feeling awkward and out of place, while being rigid in her ways and trying to use a knife and fork to eat celery.
The doc while calmly talking about how her own kind believe infinite diversity is a good thing he takes the problematic vegetable and uses it as a utensil to drive home his point. Her rigidity in everything, even just with eating is causing a very real barrier between her and her supposed goals.

This scene helps me realize how rigid I am in socializing, and that I've used my anxieties as a crutch for not being competent in expressing how I really feel and what I am actually thinking. Being afraid to make your own choices free of self doubt is a crippling way to live, and if anyone else feels this way, I'll tell you right now that it doesn't have to be so long as we try to not let it be. Also, Vulcans apparently don't touch food with their hands. There's this very early episode where T'Pol, Archer and Tucker eat dinner and she makes it a point to eat a bread stick with fork and knife.
If they've spent a couple of lunches together, I'm sure Phlox knew this and used it to underpin the discomfort T'Pol mentioned just before. Kind of a "yeah, discomfort ... you'll be doing just fine". 🙂

She is super emotional during the whole series - one of the many things that make this "not really Star Trek" for many fans. It is not only irrational that she is apprehensive of visiting the sanctuary simply because it would be "awkward" (a purely emotional thing), but it's even more irrational that she displays anger, or at least resentment, at being corrected on vulcan philosophy by a non-vulcan. Even Spock, a half-vulcan/half-human hybrid had his emotions better in check. His answer would probably have been "An interesting proposal, doctor" - and god knows Spock took more ribbin' from Bones than any Vulcan imn Starfleet history :D

Best written and played female Characters were either shunned for beeing "boring" or "stupid" or exactly this was done to them - latter by the "Fans" whished been fulfilled. Dax, Seven, T'Pol.... sigh.
Still get the creeps when thinking back to when Voyager aired and I had a talk to some other "Trekkies" and they were "Seven's so HOT! and Janeway is a bad Captain!"
So, I cringed and asgeed on Janeway beeing an often incompetent Leader, but then thoose XXXXX referred to her disqualifying Attributes were "She's so ugly!" and such.
That's when I finally realized that there are Assholes in every Group out there, and it is not the Group, it is their own Character making them so. 2 Weeks later, Sevens Breasts suddenly "grew" larger and her Uniform was obviously designed to highlight them, and that was when I stopped watching Voyager.

Uneven writing couldn’t change the fact that the cast was FANTASTIC , as was the concept for the show. We need to see Enterprise revived with it’s original cast. Divide and Concur is a real life quote that works in real life. You can't have diversity without dividing first. I think the best (hu)man for the job is the best and only way to have diversity and expect to win. That means you have to try harder.
