Kept you waiting huh? It's been a long time since the last Low Poly, so if you could, give it a like and share it around if you found the info interesting. I know there are a lot of you that love the seires, but they take an awful lot of time to source all the models and then tidy them up for presentation. It's a real process. Naww fr bro...I love his breakdown on polys...I'm shocked he's the only one essentially doing it like this...if there are others out there then I definitely haven't heard of them.
They nerfed his cheeks in fortnite and it's quite sexist. Women, even in fortnite, are sexualized for their butt's and snake was one of the few feminist characters that had gender equality with that, and Epic nerfed it. Western devs are afraid of hot men.
So freaking excited to have this series back! Man, I missed Low Poly so much. I'm actually shocked at how few polys MGS 2 Snake has, but it really shows how powerful good texture work is for carrying a model.
U must play fortnite lol, I do from time to time and did when snake came out for it cuz I had just got a switch. Everyone was talking about his cake lol... Notice though how FN gave solid snake from MGS 2 model a full ass beard and no cake 😂 lmao
I think it's going to be a LONG time before he can justify PS2/Gamecube/Xbox era creations or characters that leapt to 3D IN that era. My guess/hopes for the next 5 episodes? 1. Lara Croft (Embracer/Amazon) 2. Kazuya or Heihachi Mishima (Bandai-Namco) 3. Sarah Bryant (Sega) 4. Spyro the Dragon (Microsoft) 5. Spider-Man (Various)
Though with the videos being so rare it's a little disappointing that it's snake as the human design kind of stays the same. I would have liked a more wild character and the main one I would love to see is Spyro. From the original primitive goofy look, to a rounded look of later, to the dorky look of early legends to the more teenage look of Dawn of Dragon and the squat look of Skylanders. I just think Spyro would have made for a much more interesting video as his design has gone through many different versions. With Snake after MGS II it has stayed largely the same.
4:18 “No, that is NOT Solid Snake!” This video was really cool and informative! Seeing all the models throughout the years is always a joy for me, glad to have watched the video :D
I think the limitations of Snake's PS1 eyes and other details (like the bandanna basically being his eyebrows) is tied to how the PS1 primarily rendered games at 240p, meaning at a certain point the details you're adding for the art style just won't be visible. This is something I think is missed when PS1 and N64 games are shown at higher resolutions like at the start of this episode. It was great to have this angle considered for the PSP models, I like that a lot : ) Also just realized! Didn't MGS3 get a release on 3DS or something?
"Colonel, I need help. My poly count is too dummy thicc and the clap of my tri vertices keeps alerting the guards." "It's ok, Snake. Head North to Tilted Towers. Can you see it?" *Cross fade across black to standard definition resolution letterbox stock footage. "Yeah, I saw it on the glide in from the Battle Bus." "Good Snake. Head North and climb the tallest tower. Then hit the Griddy to mark the LZ. We'll drop a Fulton recovery balloon to get you out of there."
The amount of research and tooling that it must've taken to extract and present those models has to be quite insane, so well worth the wait! Hope to see more of these in the future, i love it!
MGS V Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain was also released on PS3 and Xbox 360 and developed for those systems, which may be the reason the character models look blurrier than expected for PS4 and Xbox One generation of consoles.
Can't wait to see more Low Poly episodes in the future! It's fascinating to see the model progression throughout the console generations. Your hard work is appreciated!
From a technical perspective, in my opinion, I think MGS2 is what marked the era of a new generation of videogames, not just due to the amazing graphics. Every single detail in that game, from camera angles to body movements to even the audio just proved how dedicated Kojima and company were in making this game. This game is a technical achievement that still stands strong nearly 25 years later and the graphics have aged well considering what the PS2 was capable of.
This is one of my favourite youtube series. So glad to have it back! There's a few models missing, but I understand it's difficult when Snake has appeared in so many games. Mobile from 2008 for N-Gage being an interesting one. It's cool to see how much heavy lifting the textures do in these models, and I'm all for it. Fantastic representation of materials.
You can tell some models were made using quads. Also I can guarantee the two head models at 5:50 are identical with only some nudges here and there to some parts in order to help the texture sell the younger snake.
@@Arcidi225 GPU's can only work with triangles and quads are basically 2 triangles. When you model your character, you generally don't manipulate triangles unless heavily optimising, which was the case on older hardware (with some specific exceptions). What I meant was that you can clearly see a transition where artists felt like they had enougth polys to play around with so that decimating a model was unnecessary and the quads most likely didin't have a concave corner meaning they wouldn't even see the triangles on their modeling software (with exceptions). We are looking at a raw model extracted from the game, not the model the artist made and that's a big delta.
Fantastic video - I think this is one of the franchises that better represents the evolution of gaming as a while, particularly because each game defined a different aspect of its genre. Cheers!
I know this would probably take forever to make, but I'd love to see a low poly episode about Spider-Man in his games! At least the ones that are specifically his games, you don't have to do every game he's appeared in. I'd love to see how the different teams worked on the different versions of the character between games. Or Spyro! Both would be awesome to see
