Hell, read the whiny, trivia-obsessed comments on every single one of these videos, all completely misunderstanding the point of them. This series was pearls before swine.
Hey guys, Andy here, Merry Christmas to you all. I present a new Low Poly episode with my good friends Shesez and Beta64. We’ve worked hard to showcase each others work, so please go and support them by watching their episode where i feature also. Thanks guys :) Andy
I believe he intends the statement to mean "From their very first game (DKC), _then_ Donkey Kong Country Returns, all the way up to Tropical Freeze." Notice the comma between "from their very first game," and "Donkey Kong Country Returns," which you can actually hear during the video as he pauses briefly while speaking. He probably intended that statement to mean a succession of three games, where the "very first game" statement refers to DKC, and the following comma-divided statements are self-explanatory. I mean, he just did a video displaying the mainline games in successive order. He couldn't not know the order they came out in. The way he wrote that sentence is just a little wonky, is all. He probably could've written it as "from their very first game, to Donkey Kong Country Returns, all the way up to Tropical Freeze." Or he could have just explicitly said "from DKC, all the way up to Tropical Freeze," and omitted the DKCR bit, since we'd all get what he's saying. I've spent too much time on this.
Dude Donkey Kong Country Returns was such a masterpiece! But I had no idea the original Donkey Kong Country used such a ridiculously cool animation technique for the time!!! I also love that the backgrounds for DKCR are just layers and layers of flat textures that move in parallax as the scene scrolls. That’s such a gorgeous technique and makes so much sense for a game where the camera angle is so tightly controlled. God I need to fix my wii. This game and Super Mario Galaxy 2 were my absolute favorites!
If you didn't notice, on the Low Poly trailer you could see a part where he was seeing Link's model from his 64 game. But, Andy randomly uploads at whatever time so... YOU'LL NEVER SEE IT COMING!~
I think diddy in DK64 looks a lot better in game because of how he's animated and the camera position. Some things just look better in motion from a distance.
Because your bitch ass whined too much, like 99% of the other comments on this series, and that doesn't encourage anyone to do anything you want. Lesson learned, huh?
watch low poly trailer there you can see parts of each video, and you can see one part where there is link's model from his N64 game. (was it ocarina of time? idk i don't remember the name)
Hey A+Start, when you inevitably do the Legend of Zelda Episode, can you mention/show the Link model from the DLC in Sonic Lost World? I'm not sure if it's an entirely new model or if it's reused from Skyward Sword. Either way, it's the first time Link was ever seen in a HD game and considering the amount of work sega puts into 3d models it would be nice to know more about it.
Nurb based models have no polygons or geometry. It is all curve based and it calculates the faces across arcs in real time. You can zoom into a nurb model as far as possible and you wont see any pointy bits. It's similar to the difference with vectors and pixels. A line drawn with pixels will pixelate if you zoom in, a line drawn with vectors won't. Also if you're wondering why developers don't just use nurb models instead of polygon models in games it's simply a technology limitation. Nurb models are too intense for a game engine to render in real time. Rare was pretty clever with their use of nurb models though because they were using them to render sprites rather than having them appear realtime in the game.
Those are the nurbs. It would be easier for me to throw a Wikipedia article at you then try and explain. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-uniform_rational_B-spline Basically the nurb 3D models face is comprised of these calculate curved lines as opposed to polygonal meshes who use vertices. Also to break up any confusion 3D programs like Maya do have features that can turn a nurb model into a polygonal mesh but you have to set the number of polygons it will produce and it doesn't work vice versa. So a nurb model can be turned into a polygonal mesh with as many polygons as the software can handle (or optimized to a reasonable amount).
I didn't look it up I learned it in college. I'm an art college student studying Interactive Game Design as my major and Animation as my minor. I didn't make my post to look like a smart ass I was just simply correcting a misconception people outside of the field have.
Toad The Mushroom What about my comments was assholish? I never threw out any insults or insulted anyones intelligence. I didn't mean for my tone to be taken as malicious or belittling. But I guess with text it's a lot harder to read tone than with voice so I can see why people would've thought I'm some know it all jack ass.
Mudkip971 "...But to look at that, we would have to look at something like Mario Kart or the Smash Brothers games, which we'll take a look at in a separate video."
Actually, as of now, there are 9 3D games and 9 2D games, the thing is 3 of the 3D ones play like they were 2D but that doesn't change the fact that they're still made out of 3D meshes
TheBoltMaster and smash 4 technicaly has 4 models for each character as is cause there is the low and high detail for wii u and 3ds versions each heck, why not do the trophy model too
I'd really like to see a Low Poly on Mario Odyssey, if it's possible at the moment. I'd love to see how Mario's costumes work, and maybe some other characters like Peach or Bowser.
Logan There actually already is. The switch was hacked months ago and dumps of games have already appeared. There's no way to run these dumps, but you can extract game data from them. This is how the battle levels from MK8D were backported to MK8 on the Wii U
I love this series so far! I don’t know about you but looking at stuff like models of the same character from different games over the years and seeing the poly count of those models is really satisfying to me. Keep up the good work!
Lowkey wished there was a review of DK’s Smash and Mario Party models from the N64. Always thought it was interesting how many models of him were in the n64 alone and how wildly different they were haha
MrGameGuy That's exactly why it would be so interesting. To see how many polygons this circle has. I mean the N64 version was not that much of a circle
der Synchronizer Circles are extremely easy to make, so to me, it wouldn't be interesting to see how little skill is needed to make them, also, if I wanted to see a circle, I could just go on Blender and make one really easily.
If those are the original wireframes you could have just counted them. Yes, that would suck, but it wouldn't have been impossible. You'd only need to count one half and then double it. Thinking about doing that right now.
You can use interpolation/extrapolation at that point, along with average density of tris. Point is, he still can. The wireframe shown (if the real one) suffices. You could also create the model according to the silhouette at different angles, thereby recreating the model nearly exactly. Point is, it's not impossible. It's just a bit tedious.
I'm not sure from looking if it was a wireframe of polys... or just NURBS control points. You could figure it out from the NURBS control points, with a little math and a few good guesses. We don't know the resolution of the tesselation on the NURBS.
While he could have counted it (which would suck) counting half and multiplying it times 2 wouldn't work since the model isn't symmetrical. Counting them sounds like a pain though.

To quote the episode, "...But to look at those, we would have to look at something like Mario Kart or the Smash Brothers games, which we'll take a look at in a separate video." 12:48
Eeveeon you could...i dunno, not do it? The other low poly episodes are great because they're focused. The others are great and all but this wasn't a great low poly episode. Very light on content and examination all to include the other two. :/
Its funny how speaking from a strict perspective the N64 3d model of DK is less advanced and detailed than the SNES sprite seen on a CRT (for obvious reasons). I wonder how DK model would look if the N64 has to render just that, as a tech demo. I also wish someday the original renders get recovered. Josh G-B Donkey Kong Country Returns was the 2010 revival of the series on the Wii.

The DK64 model for Diddy looks like he lives in a trailer park, watches Nascar, and drinks exclusively bud light
Did anyone else notice that the modelers pasted pixelized human ears onto the n64 version of donkey and diddy?
Would have liked to have seen a few of the other DK models. Mario Kart, Smash Bros, and the Bongo games.
If those are the original wireframes you could have just counted them. Yes, that would suck, but it wouldn't have been impossible. You'd only need to count one half and then double it. Thinking about doing that right now.
Marcara081 well he wouldn’t be able to count certain tris at angles not visible
I have a suggestion for the next episode: Kirby!
“It kinda looks like a knockoff version of a real Diddy Kong.”
