- Sonic the Hedgehog has had a rollercoaster of a ride since the infancy of 3D platformers, but there is one aspect thats often overlooked, and thats how Sega used the limitations of their hardware to portray Sonic in a 3D world. How much has Sonic changed in that time?

Nixsy924 the number of polygons is not the only thing that matters. remember the Mario 64 and Mario 64 D's models, for example.

I have a weird adoration for all the models before SA2. Their low poly count makes them all look so cute, especially the Dreamcast Sonic and the Sonic R models

9:37 The extra polygons in Sonic's gloves are for when he bends his wrists. It wasn't something that he did all that much until this game, and with the XBox and PS3 being more powerful than the Wii, the polygons would have been more noticeable in animation if they had left them out like in the Wii version of Unleashed or, say, Sonic Colors.

@@sherzanman1188 The NES was faster than the Master System, the SNES was faster than the Genesis, the N64 was faster than both the PS1 and the Saturn, and the Gamecube was faster than the Dreamcast and PS2 (but slightly slower than the Xbox)

I wish they had kept the detail on Sonic's soles from Sonic 06 in the newer games. Having the little Dreamcast swirl on him was a nice little touch.
Where are your eyes seeing the Dreamcast swirl on the '06 soles? Those are rings gradually decreasing in size towards their center. Not the same as one line swirling.

My favorite model is the unleashed model. Its super detailed and looks really expressive and has anyone noticed that unleashed sonic has lips? I really like that detail

Sonic adventure DX came out in 2003, so the DX model is based on Adventure 2s. Not the other way around

I've always loved the Fighters model. They perfected it so that the low poly model looks more like a design choice instead of a hardware limitation and I just love looking at it lol

Sonic's model in Shadow The Hedgehog is the exact same model as in Sonic Heroes. But then Sonic's model in Sonic Forces is the exact same model as in Sonic Lost World.

SA2 Sonic's shoes are unsettlingly large.
Soap shoes are supposed to be large. They resemble skate shoes like those of DC. But they have a nice little plate that allows you to grind on rails and stuff like an online skater. Main reason I know this is because I have some Soap shoes myself. Really comfy. I'd recommend.

Technically, Sonic's shoes weren't Soap shoes. Their official name was "Hi-speed shoes", which means Sega actually has the rights to use them again. I hope they don't, because that would only bring horrible memories of SA2 flooding back into my mind.

Indeed. I bought the game when I was up in Galway a few months ago and it’s a good game. The werehog levels are actually fun (mainly cuz it was very stress relieving for me due to things happening to me at the time)

JaLuck88 He missed Sonic's model in Sky Chase act 1 in the original Dreamcast version of Sonic Adventure. It might just be the Sonic R model again, but it would be nice to know if that's correct or not.
I actually spoke to someone who hacked into Sonic Forces, and they told me that everyone's models are literally just ripped from Sonic Generations, they just have a different Texture pack in them, except for Silver, he has his Generations texture on him in game, but his new texture can be seen in the files (Basically just a bit brighter)

That's incorrect. Sonic's center quills on his head are smaller than the outer ones on the Sonic Generations model.
Wrong, Sonic's is a edited one which was used for Lost World as well as Runners, it uses a similar spike design as Generations Classic Sonic, especially visible in 3d as the middle spike is higher up.

Nashew SU is a perfect example of a game with masterclass graphics and horrible gameplay. I hated it and still do. Then again I have a massive 2D bias for this series so that's that.

I love Unleashed so much. I love everything about that game, from the story, to the gameplay, the level design and the locations.

If I recall, Sonic Unleashed was originally planned to be the last game in the series. (That didn't happen, obviously.)
With this in mind, it makes sense that the model from that game is so incredibly well-made. They wanted to "go out" with a gorgeous finish, and they damn well did it.

That design also looks a lot better.
It looks like they modeled it in NURBS, converted to mesh, and didn't even bother to remove unneeded polygons. That's why poly count is so high.
I know this series and its episodes are many years old at this point, but they've been super helpful as i learn how to do 3D modeling. Particularly, seeing tri-counts and how things like hands and feet were modeled has been super helpful. Thank you :)

This was a great video, but I think you missed the Sonic Rush series. It would have been great to see his models from the DS handheld games.
The Rush models was the best model imo.

Correction: the Sonic Adventure 2 model that you used is actually from Sonic Adventure 2 Battle on the Nintendo GameCube which has some differences from the Dreamcast model.

Sorry, but your timeline's a little wonky here.
I'm sure you've already gotten this a lot, but Sonic Adventure DX did not come out "only two years after Sonic adventure". It came out quite a few years later in 2003. The first Sonic remake for the Gamecube was Sonic Adventure 2: Battle which came out in 2001, and used the same model as the Dreamcast version. I remember being very psyched since it was the first time Sonic appeared on a Nintendo console.
Sonic Adventure DX: on the other hand was another few years after that. That's why it has so many (out-of-place) references to the Sonic X anime, which also came out in 2003 and was airing at the time.
If Sonic Adventure DX had come out in 2000, that means it would've come out before the Gamecube.
Remakes and REMASTERS are different
SA2 Battle did not come out in 2001 though; it was 2002.
Also SA2: Battle does not have the same models, its actually mixed which models are better as SA2: Battle has higher Poly models, but several lighting bugs in the Battle version and several other issues such as inconsistencies and broken shadows in cutscenes have made the consensus that SA2's models, while slightly lower poly, are better in cutscenes and gameplay, lighting wise, and lighting means a lot.

Something to note, you cannot measure sonic's Model 2 and Saturn models in triangles, because both systems operated their polygons in quads.

I believe he only went trough the main games, as by the end of the video he says that ''So as far as main Sonic titles go''. He didn't mention Sonic Riders because it's a spin off I guess, just like Sonic and Sega All Starts Racing and Sonic Shuffle for example.

Sonic Adventure is my favourite Sonic game. I loved the Werehog, I understand why people didn't like it though. I played the PS2 version and that version was so different.

Superkman23 That was the first Sonic game I ever played, and I hadn't played many other games before that anyway, so I had very little reference for what makes a game good or buggy as all hell. Personally, I quite liked the art style, especially for all the badniks.

Needs a part two for Sonic to catch up on the models. :) Like the Olympic games and Forces, TSR, etc. Could also do an episode on Sonic's different forms like SuperSonic, Werehog, etc.

Actually, you forgot a LOT of models, such as pretty much every Super Sonic model, the Werehog model, his portable models (Sonic Rush, Sonic Colors DS, Sonic Generations 3DS, Sonic Lost World 3DS, Sonic Boom Shattered Crystal/ Fire and Ice, his Olympic Games models, his Sonic Riders models, his Sonic Shuffle model and his All Stars Racing models. Did I forget anything?

The explanation of the many numbers of polygons on sonic unleashed model is because the cutscenes in the game is really great, and sonic is well animated. To a character be very animated, it must have a large number of polygons.
