Blower Motor Resistor Replacement Pontiac Vibe AC Heater

  • I replace the resistor and the electrical plug for the blower motor on a Pontiac Vibe 2002-08. The bad plug was causing an intermittency problem (the blower would go on and off sporadically, such as when I went over a bump in the road). Not long after this intermittency problem erupted, the resistor failed and, consequently, the blower motor only worked when the heater or AC was on high; no air on low or medium setting.
    Removing the resistor can be frustrating if you don't have the right tool. I'm using a 1/4" swivel tip socket and a 1/4" screwdriver type of driver, purchased at Harbor Freight:

    The 7/32" socket worked best on my 2008 model, the 6mm worked best on the 2003 Vibe at the junkyard.
    OFTEN TIMES IT IS A BAD BLOWER MOTOR THAT CAUSES THE RESISTOR TO FAIL IN THE FIRST PLACE. Bearing friction gets worse and worse in a bad blower, causing the motor to draw more and more current. Increased current burns out the blower motor plug and resistor, as well as causes the motor to smoke. The resistor will overheat, but likely not blow a fuse. When removing the blower try spinning the blades to check for friction.
    Therefore it might be a good idea to replace the blower motor and the resistor at the same time, or else, as stated above, you'll keep blowing resistors; a bad blower motor might be the root of the problem in other words.

    These fricken people who manufacture cars don't know how to build anything that last. This should be an easy access fix. This should never wear out.

      well mine has lasted now 240k miles, so why do some fail and not others?

    Thanks for the video! I've replaced the blower motor, blower motor resistor, relay is good, fuse is good, still my ac isnt coming on at all when I turn the switch. I'm lost now, I thought the resistor was the culprit, but turns out it's not. Don't k ow what to check next, any help is appreciated. 2005 pontiac vibe

    Nice video. Speaking of bad blower motors, any suspicions as to why that connector melted? Looks like that motor is pulling a lot of current for it to do that.

    What would the cost be if you took it to a mechanic to do all that. year now 2024

    Thanks for this video, it was really helpful but could not see how you disconnected the plug from the mower, I am working on mine and I don't want to damage it.

      aktwin2 I just did this yesterday. The connector has a tab on one side of it that latches. I used a small pick tool (small screwdriver or possibly a fingernail will also work) to gently lift the tab then disconnect the connector from the fan.

    Didn't see you pull the blower motor. I wanted to know what size those asinine bolts are that hold it in. Not 6mm or 5mm.

      @slalomking 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      the are 5.5 mm, or you can try a standard socket the may fit it.

    What about if you replaced the plug, but it's the plug coming out of the blower motor?
