    I set up a few new computers every week at work. (I work for a small IT company.)
    - The first thing I always do is disable Windows animations. It baffles me that nobody else ever seems to do this. (Start>"animations">Show animations in Windows*)
    - Then enable single-click mode so I'm not double-clicking a thousand times for absolutely no reason. (Start>"single">Specify single- or double-click to open)
    - Hide Cortana and the other useless Taskbar icons
    - Disable Cortana notifications
    - Install any necessary drivers
    - Update Windows
    - Uninstall all the bloatware, such as the pointless games that clog up the Start Menu
    - Then I launch Chrome Installer (Microsoft calls it "Edge") and, like the presenter here, use Ninite to get Chrome and a few others and then set Chrome as the default browser
    - If it's a notebook computer, I fix the featurebug that puts the computer to sleep when the lid is closed (Start>"lid">Change what closing the lid does)
    - If it's a computer I plan to use, I always install CoreTemp and display the CPU temp in the Taskbar, but I'm a bit obsessive.
    - Create a restore point once setup is complete
    - There are other things, but nobody will read this anyway, so I'll stop here.
    *Sometimes Windows won't suggest that when I type "animations". Sometimes it will suggest partway through the word. Sometimes, backspacing one letter at a time will get it to suggest.

      hi i actually read every single word of your instructions thank you for them , what i wanna ask you is that i still have windows 8 on my laptop and i don't know if i should update it to windows 10 p.s am not a gamer i only use it for college and to watch movies

    • @katieell4084
      @katieell4084 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@khalidbrown9951 Windows 10 seems more stable and faster than 8 and has a lot of nice quality of life improvements. You can download a Windows 10 ISO right from Microsoft and put it onto a USB flash drive if you want to do a clean upgrade to Windows 10.
      The free upgrade path is officially closed, but they haven't stopped activating systems that have a valid product key for Windows 7 or 8.
      Your computer probably has a mechanical hard drive. If so, your best course is to buy an SSD (you can get a 500 GB MX500 for about $70), replace your current drive with it, and install Windows 10 on that. This way, no matter what happens, you'll still have your original Windows 8 installation if you need it and you won't lose any files. Additionally, using an SSD will yield an enormous performance improvement.
      You can buy a USB HDD enclosure if you want to access your old hard drive without putting it back inside your computer.

    • @teksyndicate
      @teksyndicate  6 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      John Tantay it's not bad. I tried it and I also liked haulite, but I'm happier with the old uTorrent. EDIT - So many people keep saying this that I gave it another chance beside my old uTorrent 2.2.1... In my testing tonight the old uTorrent has been faster and more reliable. I kept getting disk errors with qbittorrent, I'll look into it more. Otherwise they are about the same imo, I just like that old uTorrent, but the newer version are basically a virus.

    You can just move your downloads folder and pretty much all your user folders to another drive or location like you would any other folder, windows will remap its location. I do this so that I can wipe windows whenever and keep all my stuff without having to worry about backing stuff up, plus if you are using a smaller SSD, it will free up a bit more space. I even have the desktop on a separate drive as well as downloads, documents, pictures etc, mind you that's on another NVMe drive to keep it quick on bootup.

    Additional Suggestions.
    1. If you are using 2 or more monitors install Display Fusion, preferably from their website to avoid the Steam DRM, but I did to get the full paid version at a price that is worth it to me so I can say that it hasn't caused any issues for me.
    2. Alternate suggestion to Ninite if you are willing to deal with a learning curve. Chocolatey is a package manager for Windows that has a free and pro version and like many Linux package managers has a command line version but also a GUI version called, what else, Chocolatey GUI. Not only can it install a list of software to your machine (only to the default locations on free version) but it can quickly update all of them with the simple command "choco upgrade all -y". You do have to be aware that the packages, also like Linux, are maintained by the community.
    3. Classic Shell: CS is still a better start menu than the default one and is continually updated to keep up with changes in the UI. It also makes it easy to get to the Default Start Menu when you need to.
    4. Download and install Data Recovery Program: It is good to download these programs BEFORE you lose data you need to recover as adding it when you need it can actually write over parts, if not all, of the data you are trying to recover.
    5. Download and install an alternative Task Manager: There are times where the Windows Task Manager won't be enough or it will not launch to a running program. Alternatives like System Explorer will tend to work when they don't and visa versa. Not a huge problem but it has saved my ass several times when software crashed hard or hardware/drivers were giving me issues. Then again I prefer System Explorer to the Task Manager anyway.
    6. Turn extensions back on in File Explorer.
    7. Add "Everything", the search tool that searches "Everything" on your computer. Windows search is so limited it should be removed, especially if you have "God Mode" activated on your machine. Especially if you have Wox, which uses Everything, or Launchy installed.
    8. If you want to maximize your C: Drive's space also move "Documents" off of it.
    9. Add a Clipboard Manager: Seriously how is it it is almost 2020 and Windows does not come with a safe, secure, and powerful Clipboard Manager yet?
    10. Install Lockhunter for those damn files that get stuck locked or are unnecessarily locked by some process.
    11. Install Ultracopier: With my system it helps speed up copies of large files or groups of files over the default. Your success may vary, especially since the April Update.

      I don't understand why Chocolaty has so many problems that Homebrew for Mac does not. It's understandable why Linux package management is superior to both, but Chocolatey is the only one I frequently get errors in.

    • @GonePh1shing
      @GonePh1shing 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      praetorxyn really? I don't think I've ever had an error with chocolatey. Just batch install from a file after installing Windows and have it auto update all on login via a script and I never have to see it again until I want to install or modify something.

    Wallpaper Engine should be in here. For torrents, use Deluge. If you need Blocklist (yes, you should), use the plugin Blocklist and put in this list: john.bitsurge.net/public/biglist.p2p.gz (combination of the best lists from Blocklist).

    PSA: All versions of uTorrent have a vulnerability that allows websites to do remote code execution on your machine with no user input required. ( bugs.chromium.org/p/project-zero/issues/detail?id=1524 )
    Use qBittorrent or Deluge instead.

    1 - stop using notepad++ and move on to Visual Studio Code (has way more built-in features and a giant extension library)
    2 - stop using uTorrent and move on to Deluge (you can make your own seedbox with it + it's not laggy on windows 10 unlike utorrent and bittorrent + it has a very nice and clean interface)

    Stop spamming linux around, folks. It is a good thing that the overwhelming majority of people uses windows and apple systems or whatever pleaes their souls instead of linux, they get almost all the malware, worms and viruses, keeping us in the relative security of a system that is a target too small to be worth the time of (most) virus developers. Fanboys: if everyone switches to linux you'll have to migrate to something else if you still want to pose as elite. you could end up running haiku or Bell's plan9 just to keep playng the part of the cool kids. Aaand linux forums are already full of green newbies asking trivial questions they could've figured out themselves reading docs and studying a bit. Really you want to *_see the mice in their million hordes_* flocking into our house ?

    I first disable anything useless in the taskbar or menu, and Cortana or other programs that are not needed like bloatware. And then I download this software called driver booster because it can download all the drivers, quick and easy. And then I change the power plan from balanced to high performance and then I download ccleaner!

    Problem with uTorrent 2.2.1 is that it is really old and not optimized for SSDs and fast optical internet. If you have lot of torrents and fast connection it will not work good if you don't change some settings. For example like buffering. Try qBittorrent. It just works OK, it is modern, you don't need to change any settings. Only how much torrents you want to have running and seeding simultaneously.
