I like TreeSize Free. If your SSD or HD is getting full, it gives you a great overview of everything you have stored and it's easy to find stuff you don't need and you can clear up some space.
I've been out of the tech industry for 20 years now and I have just recently started to get back into it... watching this guy's videos has really helped me catch up and I have to say things seem far simpler than back in the day.
Buckle up. Rules, guidelines, standards, all are out the window. The desktop PC has one foot in the grave and other on a banana peel. The cell phone, with a tiny screen, a tiny keyboard and a cr@p0la OS is all there is left. We learn by pressing every button to see what happens. If they fail we throw them away.
A note about RTSS (MSI Afterburner OSD): Set app detection level to none for specific program executables if they won't launch while you have it active. You won't have to toggle it on and off at a system level that way.
A few months ago NordVPN was having trouble for me and support concluded it was RTSS. So this comment is definitely helpful. You don't need to monitor sensors with NordVPN :)
I have just watched your episode of what to do after I built my tower and this episode is just as awesome and helpful as the previous one. After watching you for 3 days straight, basically teaching me, how to build my first proper tower correctly, installing everything correctly, and now teaching me the software I should have and look into, I finally feel for the first time, I actually have million times better understanding of my computer and how my first proper gaming build works. I have always played consoles before but I feel that you have ninja kicked down my door the PC world and I cant thank you enough. Thank you Jay , and the JTZ team! Happy Holidays Nick from Sweden.
Dude welcome to PC gaming. I hope you've enjoyed your year with it since you made this post. I know PC gaming can have hiccups and annoyances you don't get with console, but I find the benefits outweigh those things tenfold. I'm here because I'm building my third PC 7 years after my last. Jay has great videos for new or returning builders.
A software I like to use is a tool named Ghostbuster, which searches the PC for ghosted device driver entries and can removed them. This helped me a lot with seemingly messed up drivers, which especially game controllers and audio devices suffered a lot.
This is probably not necessary if you have Windows 10. I haven't been able to find ghost drivers for a long time now because win10 keeps them out of the way.
I have used this with Windows 10 for years. And no, it doesn’t keep them out of the way. I cannot say, why it doesn’t find anything for you, but windows 10 definitely doesn’t remove them or anything.
i keep having buzz freezes... usually with gaming... some games work fine but some games windows 10 just freezes completely ... keyboard and mouse video and the audio sends a loud buzzing sound... its always in different tones ... sometimes changes tone during the freeze... until i power off by holding the main i/o .... would ghostbuster help this?
For windows, AutoHotKey script is incredibly useful for all sorts of macros and custom scripts. One of the many things I use it for is automating repetitive keyboard tasks, as well as a custom set of keyboard layers for more ergonomic typing.
Unchecky is great, it unchecks "install this optional software" from installer dialogues. Suddenly I didn't have 5 different pieces of security software to constantly uninstall on my parents PC
WinDirStat creates a graphic representation of the files on your drives, very useful if you find yourself running out of space and want to find useless bloated files fast.
Remember, if you disable automatic Windows updates, do the process yourself once a week, especially nowadays tons of security updates get released every month, some extremely time critical, not to mention updates may improve performance and add new utilities. Windows Explorer dark mode is perfect for example.
Once a week is not often enough for security updates. Those need to be installed asap since there could be a remote code execution for example. If too many people disable updates Microsoft is going to take that option away again.
I've disabled it. Nothing worse that about to get a multi kill in your game and your desktop pops up and says "Hey F**ckTard, you should maybe do an update!"
"not to mention updates may improve performance and add new utilities" Do not forget to mention it may also add : Vanish all your files, brick all your files, delete all your files and so many more shitty update that caused so much trouble *October Update* That is the main reason i have Windows Update disable. I do not want to get a forced shitty update and get my pc brick or other crap because they have done a stupid coding then they have to roll out a fix for that...
@@AugustoKnight Exactly, notification suppression is the best solution along with than scheduling updates for a specific time. Telling people to disable Windows updates is really a bad idea; especially for the average user.
There are two programs in particular that I add to any system that I start with. The first is VLC Player, one of the best video players around, compatible with just about anything. The second is Belarc Advisor, a simple utility that records your system's hardware and installed software, including most security keys; it's an easy way to keep track of all your computer's assets in case of future issues, as the utility creates a simple HTML file to be saved or printed.
Yes when I did personal PC repair and tuning around 2005-2015, I'd use Belarc and print a hardcopy for clients. They really appreciated the security keys since they often would lose their original CD sleeves.
VLC is by far the most universal media player, but like optical drives, playing local media files is becoming an antiquated notion for most users who don't specialize in something like video editing.
Holy crap just used MSI afterburner for the first time and i didnt realize how slow i was running my fans. Ive been under using my PC because i couldnt really monitor anything. But now i can push my PC while playing some of my favorite games and see how it preforms while im playing!
My favorites as a photographer as well as a gamer are: CPU-Z, GPU-Z FastStone image viewer, GIMP, Rufus for making bootable USBs (Linux Windows etc.) and VLC for all media playback.
@@cazandmal GIMP is awesome for image editing, Davinci Resolve for video editing, the free version still has more than most need and not much really is missing compared to the studio version.
On one hand, FastStone is one of the very few that has touch support. On the other hand it tries to load all images into RAM the moment you navigate into their folder, so it's absolutely shit if you're connecting to your NAS via VPN, or other such situations. If you don't need touch, I prefer IrfanView.

Another good one is everything. You can search for any file on your system, and it displays the path to all files that contain the query you searched for. Pretty cool because the windows search bar is pretty useless for searching files imo. Also VLC Player is the best video player hands down.
In windows you have to turn on the option to search everything, by default it is set to search your most used and common folders. You can also add folders to search but it's set that way because it wants to save CPU and load faster results, I ran into the setting last night on my new build.

Geek Uninstaller, it's the only piece of software I can think of right now that I think would be useful for many, think super lightweight CCleaner type of uninstaller. It goes through the regular uninstall then checks for all the crap left behind which you can select what to remove, can also force uninstall along with a few other features too. I honestly rarely use the regular windows add or remove programs anymore. It also may or may not help you reinstall a trial software to buy extra time....I definitely didn't do such in college for software I needed so I wouldn't have to drive in to work on labs. :)
A lot of these are like benchmarking and overclocking tools, which are good but a couple in particular that I like and are a little more practical when actually using your PC are VLC Video Player and Gyazo.

Eetu Nimee Why do Linux people always act like it’s comparable to Windows/Mac? It’s just not. Can it do everything they can and more, yeah. Can you just buy some piece of hardware and have it “just work” without having to write and compile your own driver? Sometimes. How about if I want to control the RGB in my components? Oh right the software doesn’t exist for Linux because most companies don’t write for multiple operating systems. Linux has its pros and cons just like windows and macOS do. Just cause someone has an issue with a platform doesn’t mean Linux is always the right and obvious solution.

Here I am building a PC when everyone starts yelling "Everyone, build your PC now!" Now my CPU order is canceled by seller because they noticed prices for CPUs were up due to high demand... Feels bad when you've got all your parts and now you're stuck with waiting for prices to come back down or paying an extra 50% or more for your last component. Considering wasting half my weekend driving to Micro Center to pick it up in store for a 'Normal' price (+tax). Should probably send an angry e-mail to the seller that screwed me over too, since I could have ordered elsewhere for the same price if I knew they were going to cancel my order.
@@CoreyKearney This was with a reputable site and it wasn't like I picked some sketchy marketplace listing (it was the default seller and might have even been 1st party). Ebay though, yeah. That's where you'll get an email saying that, actually the _new_ modular PSU doesn't actually come with any of the modular cables. It's not actually the pictured product. You still want it right?
If you are using ebay and you actually bought the cpu you can go through legal terms and push the seller to actually ship your item and accept the purchase contract (at least in germany)

A software I like to use is a tool named Ghostbuster, which searches the PC for ghosted device driver entries and can removed them. This helped me a lot with seemingly messed up drivers, which especially game controllers and audio devices suffered a lot.
Oooh, thanks. I'll have to look more into this.

Windows Explorer dark mode is perfect for example.
Once a week is not often enough for security updates. Those need to be installed asap since there could be a remote code execution for example.
If too many people disable updates Microsoft is going to take that option away again.

Why do Linux people always act like it’s comparable to Windows/Mac? It’s just not.
Can it do everything they can and more, yeah. Can you just buy some piece of hardware and have it “just work” without having to write and compile your own driver? Sometimes.
How about if I want to control the RGB in my components? Oh right the software doesn’t exist for Linux because most companies don’t write for multiple operating systems.

One thing you forgot to mention about the Unigine Heaven benchmark: it has an amazing soundtrack
Yea
100%
ngl I've listened to it without benchmarking
It has music?!?!?
For general maintenance:
WinDirStat (manage storage)
simplewall (manual firewall)
FanControl
BCU (Bulk Crab Uninstaller)
Of course:
7-zip
Notepad++/Sublime
This seems like something that is strictly about how to optimize and diagnose a computer rather than just generally useful programs that most people don't have.
And its only applies if you sticking to only for windows.
@@Boborjan1986 whoa, a channel about testing hardware in gaming and Windows-based workloads primarily talks about Windows software? whoa.
@@LezzaD Well, gaming is not windows only, and PC hardware is not just to run windows, but at least two other major OS, so it might be time to not just focus on win (first wanted to say: specifically on a crappy os. But i dont want to hurt some people feelings. ;) ).
@@Boborjan1986 If you look at the numbers, no other os is better for games. Even on Mac you will have more fps under Windows, like it or not, just facts.
@@Boborjan1986 99% of gamers play on windows smart guy
I use:
1 MSI Afterburner
2 Heaven benchmark
3 GPU-Z
4 HW monitor
And some extras like:
TronScript if windows don't want to Boot
CPU-Z
DDU
Crystal disk info
what does TronScript do?
@@livebig6414 i also do want to know lol.
@@livebig6414 it cleans cache, repair corrupted windows files, it got anti-malware and some things more that i do not remember, you can check it on reddit

Shizuku edition? because that's the only true version of CrystalDiskInfo. (if you are benchmakring also pick up CrystalDiskMark while you are there)
TreeSize Free by JAM Software. Great tool to find out what's chewing up your hard drive/SSD space.
Windirstat
@@speedburger5410 WizTree does the same thing, but it reads directly from the MFT. So, it's a lot faster than WinDirStat that in my experience.
Treesize is a lot better.
This is a life saver, I have so much crap on my drives that I need to sort out lol
SpaceSniffer is super cool. You can actually navigate around graphically. Different mechanic than competitors.
1) Sycnex Windows10Debloater (boot afterwards)
2) O&O ShutUp (Usually defaults are somewhat ok)
3) Ninite (click the nice things through)
4) CPUID HWMonitor
5) Optionals: Sysinternals Process Explorer, CPU-Z, MSI Afterburner

Pretty much... I already had all this software but still gotta send some love
Same. I have no idea why I really enjoy watching PC building guides when I already know all the info.
I love how the subtitles said "Jase $0.02"
Lol
This vid is still really useful even after 3 years! I am in the process of building a 13 series i7 system and the refresh was very usefull. My last build was 8 years ago.
OpenRGB is great for RGB lighting, especially if your system is mixed with Corsair, Asus, etc components.
Corsair's iCue can be used to control rgb from other manufacturers now.
Underrated comment
Free for Win, Mac and Lnx:
Those are my top five for any OS
1. Gimp
2. Inkscape
3. Audacity
4. VLC
5. OBS
These do nothing for your computer. That is creative software.
Darktable should probably make that list. Not sure why it doesn't get mentioned alongside gimp and inkscape more reliably, but it is the best program available for photo retouching on Linux (even has support for "thirds guides", out of the box).
@@HalkerVeil they make your computer useful ;)
@@lperkins2 You are absolutely right Darktable is the best for managing and editing raw photos, this is just an arbitrary list and I tend to use inkscape and gimp more often. RawTherapee isn’t bad either ;)
@@raiscl Why not add Blender then. Or do you not go there.
Why not a bunch of free game developer engines. Everyone and their dog must be making games right?
Sure seems like it. But that's not the point.
None of those have anything to do with the computer itself.
But hey if you don't have it, git gud and get creative.
- SysInternals is love, SysInternals is life. This was from a site called SysInternals, then MS bought it. It's still a large collection of (powerful) freeware tools to monitor, configure, investigative and what not of tools to use. With GUI's and commandline interfaces.
- Also, BleachBit. D/L it. - Be careful and be insightful with it, it's a very powerful cleanup tool for wiping (personal) information and clutter left behind by software. BleachBit is open source!
- I also forget "Speccy", if you want a quick overview of your hard- and software with an snapshot that's hosted online and can be shared.
Hillary Clinton knows about BleachBit. Maybe she should have her own tech YT channel.
@NonLegit Nation If you're really into that, you would run things off of a livedrive anyway.
I'm grateful that you went into the manufacturer software vs afterburner. I was pretty unsure of how to handle the situation as I need the one for my lighting and thought that having both open might cause them to clash. But now I know, so thank you :D
Look at the Sysinternals tools for a whole range of useful utilities. One that I can specifically recommend is Process Explorer
LOVE the sysinternals suite. A must for a person in IT. Also WinDirStat or similar file size explorer tool.
