  • Arguably one of the best Aluminum frames ever made of all time.
In this video I share my thoughts on the whole idea that some bikes are considered SuperBikes while they don't really do anything that ordinary bikes are able to do.
My history with the CAAD10 and my build philosophy.

I've stopped trying to convince people that rim rake bikes from the 2000s are still capable through speach. It's much more satisfying to drop them just too prove a point. Marketing is a disgusting deception.

When you read those old Cannondale catalogs or on the history of Cannondale you can really appreciate how this bike came to be.And it's an American bike .Cannondale was truly unique a company. Just today I was enjoying videos on Tinker Juarez and Missy Giove.

Yeah....they were unique....I had a Colnago Super a few years before and dare I say it..I wondered what all the fuss was about. It went ok but the Cannondale was something else. It was also a bit of "Stars and Stripes" exotica and bucked against the buying trends at the time (1998)...I am not sure that Trek who popped up later (because of you know who) ever managed to capture what Cannondale managed to start....premium brand identity......anyway, all water under the bridge..

Nice video - subbed - with some good 'superbike' talking points. Great to see the rebuilt Caad 10 in action.
When I was racing 20+ years ago I had a Caad 4, Ultegra 9, with Spinergy Rev-X or Mavic Helium ( seeing your red hubs brought a smile to my face ) and that was an incredible bike. Superstiff, light for those days, and reasonably comfortable for oversized Alu... wish I still had it, and late 90's fitness to go along with it :)

The CAAD 10's are probably the best looking aluminum frames ever produced and have spectacular functionality. I've lusted after the Black Inc. version for years but can't find one in a size 52cm. Those Ksyriums SL's are the best descending wheels I've ever ridden, absolutely zero flex and track like they're on rails. Great video and a good reminder I must remain vigilant in my hunt for a Black Inc. Caad!

Never, ever, EVER underestimate an aluminum Cannondale. Period. It should be chiseled into stone somewhere and memorized by bike lovers everywhere. There's a reason why aluminum Cannondales have a cult following. I would love to get my hands on a CAAD 10 in my size for reasonable money. Not long ago a friend gave me a beat up '92 Series 2.8 Cannondale frame. I stripped, polished, re-stickered, and built it with a 2nd gen Sram Red 10 speed groupset another friend gave me as well as some parts I had hanging around my basement. I treated it to a new Columbus Minimal carbon fork since the original bonded aluminum one was questionable, and I had to pick up some odds and ends that weren't terribly expensive...BB, headset, derailleur hangers, etc. The rear triangle even manages to (barely) clear 25mm tires! Like your CAAD10, I've ridden it in all sorts of situations and it's great at all of them. I love my other bikes, but the fact that a 30 year old free frame with free parts can be so darn good compared to my '15 S-Works Tarmac is terrifying. And it turns more heads! 🤣 It's 85% the bike my Tarmac is at 15% of the price once you factor in the stickers and polishing supplies I needed. And if it gets scratched all it needs is a quick buff!

Great segment Luis! My first aluminum bike was a 1998 Specialized Allez. Yeah I have always been "on a budget". That frame had seamless welds, so it appeared to be fused together. My 56 cm frame had steep, to me, 73 or 74 degree head and seat tube angles. The ride was stiff and fast! It accelerated with no hesitation and it was my first ride with "brifters". It came with a Shimano 105 9-speed groupset, 13-25 rear, 52 x 42 front. I did swap to a carbon fiber fork and switched to Fulcrum III racing wheels. If I got dropped, it wasn't the bikes fault, just me being in my 40's then and not having the time to train properly! Most of the time I could keep up with the young guys if the ride was 2 hours or less! Great video, the marketing hype is almost intolerable these days. Let's just all get out and ride our bikes!!

I would give special shout-out to the 2013 Specialized Allez S-works, for it's weight, responsiveness and comfort. I didn't know how special the bike was until I did more research & found out that it was the last year of Cannondale bikes were made in America. I had NOT been riding it for a while & only made very few changes to the bike since purchased. I now ..... have a new interest in the bike and I am currently looking for THE SAME WHEELSET you had on your bike.. The last step would be to UPGRADE the groupset. I love Campy & my bike came with a fake style Campy setup. The other option on the table is SRAM wireless. As always GREAT information ...... KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!

Yet to give it a true test but I stumbled across several vids like this. I had no idea this was such a gem. I was stumped at how smoothly it absorbed bumps and debris. Loving the 105 shifters as well. Just one question, how can I get the Year? On the bottom of the frame it says "B330" but I couldn't find much out here.. I've been ambivalent about a road bike purchase but at that price range I couldn't pass it up. So far it def is making me want to ride more than ever before All comments are welcome!

I own and still ride my Cannondale R3000 CAAD7. Since I've not ridden a new bike, I can't effectively compare performances. I just came back to riding after 13 to 15 years off the bike. If the Cannondale underperforms, it is probably the rider☺. So far in fast group rides and a GranFondo event, it performed well with riders using new bikes. I did notice the speed of the new bikes in non-technical decents, but maybe it was just me. I won't sell my Cannondale, but then, I won't invest on a new bike until I am back into what I think is good riding shape.

I’m a little late to the party here, but I thought I’d add my two cents…I have both a CAAD3 and a CAAD10. The Saeco CAAD3 was my primary race bike for 10 years (I LOVED that bike!) and I got the CAAD 10 as a “warranty” replacement for an even older (first gen) Cannondale frame. I prefer the ride of the CAAD3…I’m a big, strong rider and that CAAD3 is super stiff! The CAAD10, while having a little “softer” ride, (the seatstays aren’t as beefy as the CAAD3’s) always feels a little spongy to me and doesn’t seem to leap forward with each pedal stroke like my CAAD3. Steering input seems about the same between the two. And, (minor points) the CAAD3 has a standard threaded BB and 1” headset (with quill stem) while the CAAD10 has an oversize headset and BB30 (I had the threaded adapter installed so I could continue to use my existing BB- this setup has worked well for me). I like both bikes, but the CAAD3 responds better (for me) and that Team Saeco color scheme still looks fantastic!!

This is exactly the discussion I’ve been scrolling to find. I have a CAAD5 Saeco that I don’t ride very much because it’s my garage queen in mint condition. It’s been upgraded to a modern Dura Ace 11-speed groupset. My daily however is a Sworks Tarmac SL6 with disc brakes and all the modern BS. Well let me tell you I took the Cannondale out today for one of those once in a blue moon rides and I kept thinking to myself: in what ways is the Tarmac any better than this bike?? The Cannondale’s mechanical shifting was for the most part imperceptible to any of my contact points on the bike, and it just blew me away! So responsive and not at all tooth rattling like so many people complain about. After watching this excellent video, I’m so very curious how they could have improved on this winning formula over the next 5 generations from CAAD5 to CAAD10. Is it lightyears better? If so, I’d love to know how because holy smokes this old bike is so good. BTW the period correct Dean Ti seatpost is probably playing a pretty big role in the CAAD5’s perceived suppleness.

Glad to see this bike. I have a new old stock CAAD4 in grey as a project, you don't see many of these on the roads anymore neither as it is the case of the CAAD10. The CAAD4 frame is the frame on which Cippolini won its victories on the Tour de France in the late 90's. The craftsmanship on the welds is extremely high much better than any Colnago Dream or aluminium Bianchi or even alumnium Pinarello. The magic of the CAAD10 was the result of an optimization from the CAAD 8 optimo introduced some years before. Nowadays Cannondale frames are made in Taiwan and with less beautiful welds and probably not the sale quality than when they were made in Bedford.

My son has a 2014 CAAD 10 with Shimano 105 and Mavic Cosmic wheelset and it's absolutely beautiful. But in the meantime he's drooling over his old man's 1998 Cannondale USA R200 CAAD 2 with Shimano 600 8 speed SIS and Mavic CXP 30 wheelset. Gloss black finish in pristine condition. I've talked to lots of riders in Central Park, NYC and they absolutely love the feel of their CAAD 10s. After trying so hard to find a CAAD 10 in 58cm, I ended up buying a 2020 Cannondale CAAD 13 Ultegra 8000 rim brakes. I still have the original Fulcrum 600 wheelset and now riding Mavic Aksium wheels. Rim brake wheels are hard to come by nowadays.

I always used to laugh at the posseurs on fancy high end road bikes because I was a young bike mechanic in the 80's who couldn't afford them. My first race as a cat 4 was at the National Capitol Open, in D.C., Mel Pinto was the big sponsor. As we lined up for the start, an experienced rider asked me "Are you ready for for a real crash fest?" Unbelievably, it had never occured to me that there would be blood, and, bike damage. Sure enough, on the last lap, it was crash at the front, not in the middle or back of the pack. I needed to ride over a dude, gashed my sidewall, but one mile later, managed to bag 2nd place after leading the whole lap. And Mel put the medal on me. It was an awesome start for a young guy. But unless you are rich guy, leave the fancy kit for time trial or road races, Criteriums are dangerous!

Both bikes give amazing ride feeling, harsher than steel or carbon which I have on the other bikes. I think caads are super bikes when well configured. Classic frame shape, great handling. The rear brake routes through the top tube as vs on the outside on the left of the top tube like the non Di2 version. It’s still the same frameset as the Di2 version and geometry it’s just that, that is the only two differences. I built it up custom and still have the bike, it still rides the same as when I first rode it, and in Fact it’s stiffer and lighter than most carbon elite frame sets out there and it rides like my carbon bikes. I won’t ever get rid of it. It’s my go to bike. It’s stiff, tough, strong, light, and durable. It’s bar far the best aluminum frame set I’ve ever had.

I just found you today. The Pittsburgh bike Museum has thousands and thousands of bikes and most of them are for sale at the right price.I sure they would have something you are interested in.

Great video. I've been passively shopping for an alloy road bike and this is all great info. I was looking at used Caad12/13 frames as options but I'll be sure to throw the Caad10 in the mix as well.
If the Caad10 is one of the top two, what else is up there with it?

Hi there! Thank you for watching. A frame that is also in high regard is the Specialized Allez Sprint and Trek Emonda ALR if you can find one. Hope you find something awedome👍🏾

      Anything by Gary Klein.

The new specialized allez sprint looks really nice. One thing to consider though is that the CAAD10 and Allez sprint have very race geometry, the CAAD13 and the Trek ALR are closer to endurance geometry (they're higher at the front and angles are less steep). All are good bikes but I'd pick the one that suits your style of riding best.

… the CAAD 10 is the easiest to work on, but not as arrow as later models.

I just stripped my gen 1 caad10 105(black/white) and put Dura Ace 9100 on it. It is fantastic and quick.

I do agree with you the CAAD12 felt soft. I was disappointed in mine despite the hype for that frame.

It’s a great bike! Might super-bike it this weekend. Ultegra and carbon bars is enough for me and my budget 😂

Just found this in the back catalogue…….so refreshing a real world take on what is a ‘Superbike’ ? The extensive comments make clear the distinction. Put aside the marketing puff of the ‘latest and greatest’ generated by countless marketing depts (together with the laughable price tags, frequently questionable tech innovations). Redefine for yourself what delivers for you, so many Superbikes from 10/15 yrs ago exist under the radar. Redefining the Superbike …….smart move Luis. Folk riding them already know……..spread the word. 👋👋👋

My Allez Sprint is a bike I'll never sell. I used to have a CAAD10 and a 12 but I prefer the Allez Sprint. Great bikes nonetheless!
