Some covers serve a purpose. They channel air over the top of the engine to the rear against the firewall and it disipates heat.
@@kingcraven8056 True however The cover on this engine was engineered with foam and was pretty standard looking. its primary purpose was sound dampaning.

That’s possible. That NA 4-cyl has 8 speeds and 201 HP. We’ve gotten 40 in mixed driving. I don’t doubt for a second 49 is possible on a highway if you are being gentle. My parents have had several Avalons with 300+ HP V6 and get 32-34 hwy and they are quite fast.

Scotty likes a turbo never thought I’d see the day.
I’ve got a 2015 Golf with 120k miles built on the same platform and have had 0 issues. Averaged about 24,000/year the past 3 years. The MQB cars are top tier, they really worked out the kinks before releasing them, there’s a testing video on TH-cam. These cars also have a system in them that run coolant through the engine after you turn it off to cool the turbo down.
I've wondered if cooling a red hot turbo after shutdown is addressed.
This is the "real" review that people really need, "transparency", not some vlogger with a ton of money who speaks like everybody has an endless pocket like them and like a salesman taming you like a dumb sheep... Sure is a lot different than the 85 & 87 GTI's I had. 100 HP and 128 HP. Loved driving them on the Autobahns and the back roads. Only problem is my Mechanic and I had joint custody of the cars.

I’d trade a few tenths and a few MPGs for a manual any and every day of the week.
These computer controlled automatics take all the skill out of driving a vehicle. Plus they are really susceptible to breakdown and very expensive to fix.
The DSGs that go into these are pretty solid as long as you keep it stock and change the oil every 40k. They are def not as fun as a real manual but it's the next best thing. Have 46K on my 2018 GTI and I haven't had a singe issue with it, and that's when they were made in Mexico. It's a pretty great daily driver that's practical and quick. Would take one of these over a crossover any day.
@@captinbeyond I never thought I’d own another automatic until buying a 2018 F150 ecoboost. Incredibly fast, responsive, and seamless shifting. While getting great gas mileage.
The ten speed combines so much performance and convenience it levels the playing field IMO. Of course it’s a lot cheaper to replace a clutch than tranny. Anything with 4-6 gears better be a manual.
@@WhiteTree97 Good to know, but I stay away from European cars because of the expense in repairs when needed. I still drive my old 1991 Ford F250 7.3IDI diesel. 1.34 million KMS and still going strong. It's been hard used in the bush, so the body could do with some repairs. Otherwise aside from general consumables it A O.K.
Scotty - love your videos. Nice to hear this one. Have a TDI Jetta with the aftermarket tune. Fun to drive. 44 mpg. Yes diesel. Very few problems getting to 170k. Left front wheel bearing. And my mechanic advised replacing the flywheel if I plan to drive it another ten years. I do. Fun to drive, great mileage, and the Audi’s hate it when they want me to pull over for going 85. I move right and floor it. 100 fast with the turbo. I back off and let them pass me. But I like to look at the expression on their face.
Hey man, what year TDI do you have? I know the mk4’s are solid with the 1.9, but I’ve been looking at Jetta Sportwagens and I’m not totally sold on the 2.0’s yet. What maintenance have you had to do so far?

I have a 2012 Volkswagen Passat and it has not given me one problem so far. It already has 170,000 miles and it is also pretty good on gas. I would recommend it to anyone
My dad's 2005 Passat TDI is still going 💪!
My 2013 2.5 passat is at 153000 miles and I'm still waiting for my first check engine light.
Scotty: Love your videos, As a 70-year-old “DIY” kind of guy and love things that last. I have a 2013 Toyota Tundra and my wife has a 2005 Honda Civic, each vehicle has 50k miles on them. When I bought the Tundra started using the local Toyota dealership and over time (5 years), started seeing, (the Toyota service department) was shorting me one quart of oil on every oil change and the color of the oil was darker than the Toyota W0-20 pure synthetic. Sounds like cheap bulk oil to me. I told the manager and he said he would make a note of it. Ended up buying extra quarts of Toyota oil and topped off after each oil change, switched dealership and on the first oil change was one quart low…
Maybe if you pulled the dipstick before driving off after the oil change.
My 13 passat 2.5 was made in Tennessee. It's been a great car so far up to 153000 miles.

Currently daily driving a MK8 GTI 6 speed. Love it everyday. Plan on doing 5k oil changes.
I have 180K on my GTI. I guess it’s going to blow up soon.

@@itzed you should be fine. one thing I would recommened is picking up a ODBEleven Diagnotic tool for you car. At least that way you can check up on any engine codes that may appear in the future befroe taking it in. Also getting a basic torx set never hurt anyone. Just keep up with the maintence every 5-7k miles. We have a lot of peopel that have mk7's that never really have any issues, other than maintence and sometimes coil packs. But those are expected to eventually need to be replaced. The only thing that engine had issues with on some years was the water pump leaking. I belive that was resolved on the year before that but every once in a while you may want to take a look at it.
Have an 18 MK7.5 with 46k miles it's been solid too. Good to see it going strong after 180k miles still. Have you done carbon cleaning?

The only time I’ve found manual mode helpful is in trucks while towing. Auto mode always shift to late going up a hill and doesn’t shift up going down hill.
Hey Scotty, I have a 2006 Golf TDI with 250km. The turbo went out so I'm going to take it to the Auto hobby shop on Ramstein and change the turbo myself. Much cheaper than scrapping and buying something else. Like you say "better the devil you know".
I got a tuned with FBO 2019 civic si. Looking to have scotty review it in person. Good feeling he might like it.

I have a 2020 gti I got it new and now I only have 25k miles on it I love it. I want a mustang now but I’ll keep the gti as my town car

i agree with you man specialy this gasoline engine very unreliable engine if it was a Diesel yes i have got a Skoda Octavia with 2.0 TDI engine i sell it and now i have a Nissan Patrol with straight 6cylinder 4.2 mecanical injection 4X4 mecanicale shiftin is a Diesel Engine with 5speed Manuel transmission no main compteur non turbo juste Natural aspyrated bo catalyc converter everething is simple and mecanical non electronic and it a big Suv truck very solid vehicle scotty is right best car in the world from japan
@@anwarkhelil9800 Say what? The generation engine in this GTi is EA888 GEN 4 ...extremely reliable and powerful and smooth. Many GTi and R with ore than 140 k miles still running strong. Most of them are tuned. In stock form It makes 242 wheel horse power. The tune is coming and with just software test cars are making over 300 WHP.

I have a 2016 Golf which got the air pipe to the engine loose and I noticed after 6 months of driving. It was driving with a weird sound and poor acceleration. I am afraid that the turbo and injectors got all dirty as it was sucking air without the filter. Should I worry about it?
1. What can be damage in the engine if the air goes directly from the outside without passing by the air filter?
2. How do I clean the turbo? I will like to do it as a precaution.

I have a 2013 mk6 that just had its 100,000 mile birthday. Despite it being in the shop 3 separate times this year (radiator fan, spark plugs/ coil packs, intake manifold replacement), I still really really love that car.
if your more of an enthusiest you may want to consider the APR coil packs over OEM.

I think drive mode might matter. If I cruise on the highway, foot in the same throttle position, press sport, I’ll gain a few miles per hour. Pretty sure the fuel map is different. Then again it’s a Hyundai with 58,000 miles. Maybe the electronics are starting to go. 🤷🏽♂️

My 2009/2010 has the same engine an built in Germany 160,000 only regular maintenance changed pcv , and main seal my falt 😊 still get 30 mpg

Just wondering how they prevented the carbon buildup on the back of the intake valves?
There is additional manifold injection. So the intake valves are washed clean by the gas.

Scotty liked the air-cooled real VWs, as do I. Give me a '67 or older with a 1776, doghouse cooler, front discs, and 12 volts. No electronics this side of the radio.
It does come from the factory with around 300hp as the GTI Clubsport or it’s sister car Cupra Leon. I can’t wait to try the Cupra 300 - I’ve truly enjoyed GTI especially on twisty roads and overtaking on the Autobahn. Are Cupras on sale in the US now?
Unfortunatly no, Cupras are not in the north american market yet.

Looks more like a Scirocco from the front. Not sure if I prefer the older styling of the Golf.
At first I wasn't sure of it myself but it does look better in person. If your interested you may want to go look at one for a few minutes in person. I dont know what it is but videos and picutres don't do it justice. Several of my buddies have also said the same thing until they saw one in person.
Scotty what if I have a 2017 GTI with 75000 miles but most of those miles are highway miles. I also change my oil regularly with pennzoil full synthetic. Should it last a long time?
I am a part of a VW car club here in TN and we have alot of peopel with MK 7 GTI's that use them as daily's other than earlier years have water pump issues and a recalled fuel pump module they hae been pretty good. My 2015 was a solid car. Only reason why I traded it in was because that year had an older head unit that didnt have the features of the Mk 7.5 and It required Premium fuel. The 2022 is rated for 87 so much cheaper at the pump. Plus with the used car market going up in price I got a good trade in deal. as long as you keep up wiht the maintence and don't beat it to harshly it should last you a while based on the experiences of the rest of the guys that have mk7's that I know.

@@vr6gls Yes the human workers which are a part of the assembly process as well as maintenance for the robots are underpaid in Mexico. So the end product ends up worse built
@@AE86FTS LOL!! I worked for VW and have seen the Puebla plant in Mexico. I am telling you there is no big difference between the two plants. You must have never heard of a thing called quality control and standardization.
I own two Mexican built VW’s and one German built Audi. Funny enough, the German built Audi has given me the most issues.
neat it has a digital oil temp and coolant temp, not sure what the top symbol is but at 181F it's most likely not the turbo.

The only thing Sport Mode does is -- it Holds each gear a little longer thus it allows more Torque from engine...
Maybe on this car not sure. On mine it changes the wheel, throttle and brake sensitivity as well as changing the shifting strategy.
Yes it does hold it longer but changes the steering dynamic.
I'm interested in what you think of the manula. Yes, I've read that teh automatic pairs nicely with this car and nobody can argue against the idea that the computer can shift faster than a human, but my hunch is the manual is still more fun to drive. Would a manual last longer?
I went withe the R, but the GTI manual is great for daily driving. The gears are kinda long but you get great MPG and its relaxing to drive especially on long hwy trips. I got a 2015 GTI which is very similar in charecter.
You would have to thrash that car to within an inch of it's life every day and do no maintenance on it at all for it to break before 100k miles. Even the 20yr old ones did 200 or even 300k miles if looked after.
Wait... 3:12 Scotty told us in previous videos that BMW's were crap, used a bunch of cheap plastic parts, etc.

How many miles can I go with a full synthetic oil change before I need to change the oil again
For VW its 10k or 1 year on the book but most car guys will say 5-7k depending on your driving habits.
Scotty you’re wrong about the different modes. If you’re in sport mode on the freeway the transmission gearing changes dramatically on most CVT cars. So you’re going 80 Miles per hour on the freeway in sport mode and the car is at 3200 RPM put it in eco-mode and it’s down in the lower 2000s.

I really love the Golf but I most definitely need more than 100k miles out of a car. If it was a diesel it would get triple that or more. I have bought 2 used Volvos with well over 100k when I bought them and they're both well over 200k now. I stick with what I know but if the diesel VW were more common here I would definitely look for one.
I own a 2011 VW golf has 132,000 miles only thing I've had to replace so far has been the vacuum pump I love the way it drives
I use to put lug nuts in people's hub caps.......
The second worst car we ever had was a vw gti. 3 water pumps 2 fuel pumps and they lost the keys on one occasion and it took 3 more weeks and a factory rep to program the keys. We got rid of it with 35k miles

@@hphillips7425 Yeah the mk 6 did have issues. I know the fuel pumps were recalled as well as the water pumps were leaking. I believe around 2017 they got those issues mostly resolved out of the factory. Recently there was a settlement on the water pump issue and they were refunding some of the costs for poeple who had to pay for it. I am not entirely sure if that year was part of the settlement. If you still have the reciepts from those repairs and do a little googling you may be able to get some money back.

@@kevs2good133 Robots work the same in Germany as they do in Mexico. The mk7 is one of the most reliable GTI generations that were assembled in Mexico.

Hey Scotty, i am looking for a toyota yaris 1.0 from 2015. Is this any good car and do you got any tips for buying these cars? Is there something to pay attention to buying these cars?
My sister has a 2011 Yaris and does like little to no maintenance on it. She’s had it from 70k miles to 200k!
@@dadyking1210 okay, that sounds good! i am now looking for a yaris under 80k miles for my mom. She first got a Citroen DS3 from 2013 with 60.000 miles on it and it was a disaster! The engine blow up so i now want my mom to have a solid japanese car where she can drive more then 200k with it with hopefully no problems!
Valentijin. From experience of owning a Yaris, a 2015 I can tell you it is a really great and reliable car. I bought mine with 55k on it and sold it with 155k. Never really had any issues other than the heater would not come on time to time but it was just a bad switch.
Other than that, it ran solid, got great gas mileage and rode pretty nice.
If you get the manual trans it can actually be a lot of fun to drive.

Who cares if "the machine" shifts faster, the manual transmission is way more gratifying. Is that one of those "machines" that Mike Lindell is suing to eliminate.
Funny how 100,000 miles used to be the end of the world for a car. Then some manufacturers started getting 300-400,000 miles out of their cars. Meanwhile, there are still a lot of car makers who seem to be aiming for 100,000 miles as the target life of their vehicles.
I don’t know, but the engine cover is engineered to channel airflow over the surface of the engine to help in cooling and keep dust and debris out of spark plugs and other electric wiring. Better cover sits an inch or two from the engine, on rubber grommets, so when the fans are blowing, the air circulated around the engine.
Its not about beating the machine scotty, its about engagement learing the car and knowing how to actually drive a fkn car. Idc what anyone says you have alot better control of the car in an actual manual car.
Yeah but manuals are slowly dying off unfortunately everything is basically automatic and that's what everyone prefers now
Hey Scotty I love your videos brother. But I think you drank a wee to much coffee on this one. Because you said if Catalytic has 3,4,5psi its ok. But then you said but then you said if it has 3,4,5,6+ its clogged. Not knocking you whatsoever brother. I love your videos. I really do. Very informative big time. I do exhaust for a living. And anything at or almost 3psi is giving you problems or close too. 3+ or above is considered clogged and has a po-430 code. For catalytic inefficiency. Which you know that. Just wanna share that code to people. Scotty keep up the awesome videos. And one less cup of coffee. Lol joking. ✌🍺
So... the moral of the video is, It's not like Scotty hate Volkswagen. So my guess his experiences on Volkswagens, is because the Volkswagens he repaired or reviewed are mostly made in either Mexico, or in the US which have a bad build quality. So, as long as the Volkswagen's made in Germany, Scotty's okay with it !

They changed the module?? Mine is acting weird too, very glitchy, took it in and they told me they no fix available!!!
Can you give me some detail on whats going on?
@@firejockey42 infotainment and gauge screens do weird random things, for example:
1. travel assist sensors “not working” or “ not available” notification/signal keeps coming on and off intermittently but I have not engaged it in the first place
2. Sound system changes the equalizer /settings on its own, in the middle of a song
3, infotainment screen does not respond to touches/ input, can’t pause, skip or play a song Freezes)
4. The style/view setting on the speed gauges can be customized from a multitude of options that one picks and sets, but it changes the style to something different that what I selected….on its own and then goes back to what I had
It is minor stuff but very annoying to me, souring my ownership experience
@@Mirror1973 Sounds like its one of the modules is gettting stuck on something. When you turn off the car and come back to it later does it clear out or is it persistent?
@@firejockey42 sometimes turning off and on again clears the frozen screen issue, sometimes it does not. The sensors travel assist warnings lighting up or the sound equalizer changing on to own still occurs regardless.
@@Mirror1973 So I was also expiencing the same issue. The tech was initally scratching his head on it cause the error codes only showed Com Errors. He reached out to Volkswagen of America's tech help line (their call system) and they recommened a control module replacement. Sicne then I haven't had an issue. I know that that module communicates with several other modules especially for the vehicle info screen so they may want to consider that. I woould recommend that if you talk to your service dept you let them know that someone else had this issue and after the control module replacement (Part 5HO-035-877) it seemed to resolve the issue. Fair warnign though with supply chain issues you are probably looking at a month and a half wait time. You will also have to redo you settings once its installed. Here is what was said on my ticket "Called VTA 2929165 advised to replace 5F Radio Hard drive due to Multiple Communication faults and radio issues"

I was initally looking for an R but they are unicorn level to find. Also most dealers that do have them are marking them up between $5k-$10k. Ford stopped making Focus's they are stricktly going SUV, Truck and Mustang.
