I've had several and each one I loved more than the previous one. The best one was a TDI diesel but now I have the 2014 2.0 TSI and absolutely love it. I hate hearing people talk bad about these little cars. Aside from the check engine light staying on.....these things are like tanks. I have yet to kill one.
Well, it was twenty years ago in my Y2K (2000) model, but I killed it when I flipped three times going 65 on the interstate but literally walked away with some scratches and a few bruises. It’s been a while and I have had some other vehicles but definitely want my Beetle back. I loved that thing and now that I am looking again for another car, I hope I can find one I love just as much.
My 2014 Beetle has 65k miles with zero issues. It has a five cylinder engine (no turbo) and easily keeps up with anybody on the road. It's also very roomy inside and looks very cool. Not sure why Scotty is so hard on them. They are fun cars to drive and very inexpensive to own.
My 2001 manual beetle is still going strong with 234k miles. Never an issue beyond a couple sensors. Never garaged and the paint still looks great. Still getting 34mpg. Still love screaming it around curves like it's on rails. Ending the beetle? That's what they said then before. Then they updated it. It will be back as electric\hybrid.
Back in the late 70's, a guy that I went to high school with had a Beetle. He proudly told me that he had taken the engine right out of that car, carried it into the house and put it on his kitchen table to work on. A DIY dream car!
Nissan's are some of the most poorly rated vehicles year after year. They rarely make a top 10 or even top 20 list of vehicles to buy. The Golf and Jetta were the tops picks in their sector year after year even during the diesel problem.
My wife had an '02 New Beetle. The 2.0l engine burned oil from day 1 despite religiously following the break-in routine. Instrument cluster failed first month. Paint peeled on rocker panels. Once it hit 50K or so and started developing corroded electrical contacts INSIDE the car, we got rid of it. NOT a well-engineered vehicle. Now the '68 Beetle I'm my garage? Runs like a champ and is super easy to work on. I'd never daily drive it but hey, it's still around after 50 years!
2012-2019 Beetles are the 2nd Gen of the “New Beetle” and are very worthy of owenership. The drive and handle great. If you want just a durable and reliable version, go for the 2.5L engine and the Automatics in the 2012-2019 Beetles are very reliable as compared to the 1st Gen autos. Sedans can be found for good value, Convertibles seem to be keeping premium prices.

The Beetle body on the Golf chassis makes for one wild cornering machine! Also, at 6’4” tall, trust me when I say the Beetle has the most headroom of any vehicle out there. Something that Scotty apparently doesn’t have to worry about. Oh, and I’m on my 2nd new beetle, and maybe my 6th VW.
I am 6’5”. My 2017 SEL turbo is the fourth NB owned. 1 TDI coupe, 2 turbo coupes, 1 non-turbo convertible. Just cannot find a more comfortable, small, efficient vehicle for the cost. Keeping this one for as long as possible. It will always have good resale value.
@@Jhart44 only if you have the money to fix it. My girlfriends car has an oil leak. Its too hard for me to fix and the dealer wants about $1000 to fix it. If you are looking for a good cheap car I recommend something gm. My 2015 equinox is so much nicer but regardless of what you get, make sure you take care it
about 2 years ago I was rear ended and the whole back of my car was smashed in so while it was in the shop the insurance company paid for a rental car and I got to drive around in a beetle for about 2 weeks. I ended up really liking that little thing.
My mom had one of those new Beetles with the 90 horse TDI. It was a very reliable - and efficient - car. The only problem it had was that you were supposed to replace the timing belt every 80k miles, which was pretty expensive.
Find a different trustworthy mechanic that'll charge the labor less, I've replaced the timing belt off my Golf 2.0 it's the same timing belt configuration. Being a single cam it's really not that bad to replace, I guess there's just less working space on the beetle than the Golf but it took me 3 1/2 hours to do which isn't that bad for a timing belt.
We had a '71 Super Beetle. My wife and I had 2 kids at the time and I drove the Crap outta that car. I rebuilt the engine twice in four years at a total cost of about $300. It was rugged and dependable and fun to drive
I still own domestic cars of that era that have yet to be rebuilt once. I will grant the original beetles weren't difficult to work on but 2 rebuilds in 4 years and you're praising it? Was the intake manifold laced with opium?
@malikail57 he drove through hell out of it, you never owned one? Why are people buying them left and right, because their fun and easy to work on. To each his own, remember that the 60's and 70’s was a different time. Retrospect the car cost as much as a set of tires on my 4x4. So cars are held at higher standards and you pay for that but we weren't rich so we worked on our own cars. Not a slam on your comment but that car was the sign of its time and they are still sought after. Old cars are fun without computers but can be retrofit with killer mods, new cars have no space to put your hands in there, you need a obd sensors and a car lift, and far less adjustments & maintaining.
I'm surprised to hear your negative opinion on the PT cruiser. Back in 2001 my wife really wanted one. They were hard to get then and it was the first new car that we ever bought. It has been a very reliable car and the maintenance on it has been very reasonable. Maybe we just got lucky but it really has been a good car for us.
I had a 77 Celica. I drove that car coast-to-coast. The only major problem was a worn rear wheel bearing. Traded it it in on a Ford Ranger in 1990. I later spotted it being driven by a fellow employee's dad.
The new beetle refreshed in 2012 is a pretty nice car with the turbo. It’s just a very distinctive design meant to be a fun toy like car, it’s not meant to be a common econobox family car like everything else out there. It boggles my mind how many young people gravitate toward these family 4 door sedans now. There all pretty much designed the same with the same colors. Love it or hate it, at least the new beetle had personality. I am not so sure about Scotty’s statement on only 500k being sold from 1998-2018.
My first car was an '83 Rabbit. It had no third gear and major steering problems, but boy did I ever love that car. When she finally died, I got an '87 Fox, also with steering issues. I sawed out the back seat and put an electric fireplace back there. Hung stockings over it for Christmas. Those were the days.
They need to keep it dead, Putting the engine in the front was the worst thing that ever happened to that car, they should have never brought it back in 99' ... The car was originally designed to be economic with easy maintenance now that car is the EXACT opposite ...Every time I see a beetle in a driveway, it's on a jackstand Or it is taken apart because someone is trying to fix that piece of Eurotrash And anyone I met that ever owned one had issues,
To be honest, I love my beetle! It’s a 1999 gls manual...yes it has its problems, but in my opinion it’s pretty easy to work on and most parts are easy to get and not that expensive. Yes, it’s only 90BHP, but it has been the most enjoyable car I’ve owned!
My 2013 beetle has 5 cyl 5 speed and truthfully the only thing I had to replace was the antenna cover the the previous owner smashed it off with a snow scraper then they siliconed it back together the next winter it feel off by itself. But I’m quite pleased with it .
I had a friend who had a Golf/Rabbit and one day when my car was dead we rode to college together. The weather had deposited 2-3 inch thick ice on I-94 and that car would slip but the FWD kept pulling very safely & predictably. I was very impressed by that especially as we passed nearly every other car brand getting into school.
My friend had a 2014 beetle. She was stopped at a red light when a suv slammed into her from behind and pushed her into the car in front so hard the airbags deployed. She walked away with a few scratches and for that reason the new beetle is a good car to me.
Scotty,, you missed this one by a mile, the NEW BEETLE is a totally different car from Volkswagen Beetle (A5) which is a very reliable and fairly low to the ground car, prudence from July 2011-July 2019... The REASON IT'S GONE IS SAME AS THE REASON FOR Toyota Camry Solara , VW Gulf 2 door, and many other 2 door none super cars...Unless you sell a purpose built proformance vehicle from Ferrari , Corvette to Mustang , Mini Cooper and Toyota GR86 or Supra... People simply don't want 2 door family cars... Please look at it again. Thanks.
My dad use to do up old beetles and camper vans either turning them into wizards or baja. It's where I learned and got my confidence to fix cars. The older air cooled where like a mechano set so easy..
The transmissions were just fine as long as treated them well. The problem was nobody changed the oil in them and so they would fail. I have one with nearly 300k and still drives great.
Great vid Scotty, love the history that you gave. I live in the NY metro burbs in the U.S. and remember when the PT Cruiser first came out and local dealers were tacking on a couple of thousand over list for “market conditions.” It is amazing how fads change now you can buy one of these cars used in good condition for the price of a new snowblower or lawnmower.
I learned to drive in a Super Beetle 45 years ago. I've wanted one every since. Finally bought myself one for Christmas last year. A very nice 2013 TDi. I love it! It is my sunny day weekend car and I get more compliments on it than any vehicle I have ever owned. I also get 39 mpg. I love it.
I am driving 2010 VW beetle, (old style body) since 2012, I had no issues except a simple $37+labor rear shock replacement. it is now 120k miles, Interior and exterior look like new, there is no color fading on plastic, no cracks on leather or anywhere. So much fun to drive and drives like new, gas mileage is great, it is an amazing car.
My elderly friend had one of those later VWs that look the same from front to back. He said that they were so low to the ground that a plastic shield under the car had to be replaced several times which was not cheap. It kept hitting the road or bumps and he was not a fast driver.
My wife's '07 New Beetle Convertible was a maintenance disaster. The 09G transmission is infamous for being defective. The heater core went and we had to have the entire dash taken apart. The shifter broke. The door handles broke. The turn signals even broke. The top would sometimes not go back up (and it would leak). Run far away.
I only continuous problem with my 98 vw beetle was headlights. I did have issue trying to change out taillight bulbs because the bolt on the tails would spin in the plastic housing, fixed it with after market lights. The other problem which was also common was the window regulators which went in both doors. Oh and the hood latch, and rear manual latch, lol. The oil burning has always been an issue with VW and Audi. I was told it was by design. I put a ton of miles on her as well with no mechanical engine and trans issues. Have you ever drove a Fiat? As someone who has never been a fan of Fiat, I can tell you first hand that the Fiat Arbath is a fun little car, and handles very well, a ton of fun to drive honestly. J/S
The Beetle has gone through three distinct generation/body types. The Type-1 as you said, the feminized New Beetle from 1998-2011, and the sportier Newer Beetle from 2012-current. The current version is awesome, the styling is more body line similar to the Type-1 yet modernized and refined. Sure, it still sits on a GTI platform but it's got way more character than a GTI. My 6 speed manual with the 2.0 Turbo is a blast to drive, it's fast and hugs the road like a sports car. It's been very reliable and besides some minor paint issues I love it and would buy another if they kept them around. Honestly I think VW marketing is trash, as with many European cars they assume their product will sell itself. If they would have given the newer Beetle some decent PR and advertising a lot of people would have been much more intrigued and gone in for a test drive and figured out it's a very nice car.
They were going to. That's what they were gonna call the Audi TT. I think there were licencing issues with naming it after another coach builder though.
They have those powerful VW Beetles on the on road of road circuits. Over 300hp top speed is pretty fast. They win alot of races too for Andretti Autosports.
Top notch thanks buddy. I owned 4 way back in the 70's thanks for explaining all this. Hot vw's magazine had an article how to make water bugs. I always wanted to make one. You being an expert knew about that. Thanks.
My first car was a 1965 VW Beatle. I bought it with 90,000 miles on it and after driving it in high school and back and forth to college three states away, I sold it with 160,000 miles for $100.00 more than I bought it for. I wanted something with more power so the next car I bought was a 1972 Mach 1 Mustang. I had enough of the underpowered, cold in the winter VW Beatle. Great vid Scotty, keep them coming!
The problem with this generation beetle is that it was never featured or even mentioned on and television or radio commercials, except maybe when it was first introduced back in 2011. I actually completely forgot about this version, and the fact they were still even making it. Also given VW's recent bad history with screwing around with the EPA ratings on their new car releases a couple of years ago, I can see why these things never sold.
I owned two of the Old style Beetles, bought a Fancy new one in 1970, Cragger Mags, Nice Chrome Exhaust-- two years later had a Head on Collision with a 1963 Chev. Impala--he drove off with just a front bent bumper, my Whole Front end in front of Windshield had to be Cut off and Replaced but the cabin stayed in place other than me breaking the steering wheel trying to Brace myself. The Old VW's were Fun to Drive but you had to keep the valves adjusted correctly or the engine would soon have to be overhauled...
The S2000 has a drag coefficient of .32 while the Beetle has a dc of .38, not sure that argument holds water. I own several cars, one being a 2008 W3 Beetle and it's a very nice car (with over 100k on it). The Beetle will rise once more, everything comes in threes. :)
I have a 2007 1.6 Beetle Luna. It goes well. Folk still look at it in Tesco’s, after all these year’s. And I love it. Scotty, has experience, knowledge, and charisma. But, he doesn’t know everything !. Kind Regards x x .
'08 5 cylinder convertible here for wife....ten plus years, and the only major expense was one new top, and a set of tires. Bought it used at a Hummer dealer.....they made at least one reliable car.
What a shame that VW killed there own product. My dad had a early 70s beetle I had a Super Beetle as my first car, I guess there is always a beginning and an end for everything. Hey Scotty thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with all of us! We've learned a lot. ✊🏻✊🏻
I've owned 2 of the new beetles and got over 200,000 miles out of each of them. I'm in the market to buy a new car and would go for another beetle if they still had an available manual transmission but they stopped offering it in 2017
2001 2.0 manual trans 234k miles. Only problem I've had is a fuel pump went out at 200k miles. I still own it. I've bought 3 more VWs 1 Audi 1 Porsche and they've all been great cars. Better ride drive and comfort than any Toyota or Honda I've owned.
I have the 1.2Tsi 2012 with leather seats 💺 7 speed auto. The car is now 11 years old and 45k miles. Zero problems and will do 500 mile trips easily and economically. Great city car as well.
Bought a 2017 Beetle 1.8T to flip and honestly it is not anything like the "old" New Beetle. It actually drives great, fairly quiet, nice infotainment system, and as much as I hate to say it, I enjoy driving it. Too soon to tell if it would last and be reliable with only 10k miles on it, but I owned a pre-2012 model (200) and those were absolute junk and sat way too low to the ground...everybody destroyed the front end on those models. My initial thoughts on the 2017 Beetle that I have is actually positive and don't have a bad thing to say other than with the rear headrests installed you got some pretty bad blind spots out the back window.
i currently drive a bug, its an 04 vw new beetle 2.0, 5 speed manual gls. everything works on the car. its got 73k miles on it, has been a great car. I wanted a subcompact car that can actually tow and it is pretty much my only option.
I have 2 New Beetles. Both stick shift. My first one, an 06, 2.5L 5cyl, has 253,000 miles on it and still runs strong. My second one, an 03, 2.0L 4cyl has 168,000 miles on it. Still running strong. That being said... They are expensive to maintain. I can only afford to fix one issue at a time. I know a BOATLOAD of people who have bought more than 3 of these cars. Both consecutively and have them at the same time. There's a big forum website devoted to this car. People who have them either LOVE them or hate them with a passion. I've had mechanics REFUSE to touch my cars, even for a simple oil change!!!! I have no plans to replace them, as they both still run strong. I AM planning on buying a small pickup truck though. I'm looking at the Tacoma trucks around 2003-2005. But they seem to have a big frame rot issue. UGH!!!
weird how he didn't mention the last real beetle made in mexico in 2003.just type last maxican beetle and you can see the last ones made .they are really awesome.wish we had those here in the states
What about the tdi beetle? I have a 2001 tdi bug with 210k miles and so far no problems. All that I really had to do was fix a fuel leak and a couple oil changes. Other than that it’s a real solid car.
I love my beetle. I have owned 3 of them, and I disagree with his assumptions. I think it is a very nice looking car and very fun to drive. I couldn't imagine owning any other car.
Yes, go to bmw dealer & see the highest priced sport sedan. Then check on the sticker on it, the Origin of transmission. I bet U don't / can't see anything what it says, cause ur foolish childish IQ 9 kind of dickhead can't read anything RIGHT !!!
I had a 98 new beetle tdi, 5 speed manual. I didn't really have major failures. What got repaired in 250,000+ mi: timing belts (routine), ac compressor (late in life), window regulators (power windows just suck), rear brake caliper (froze pinching the disc after a bad winter + lots of salt, later in life). Never had to replace the clutch. I wouldn't trust a gas VW, nor one with an automatic.
My wife has a 2003 beetle that we'll pass on to our daughter. It's not a bad car at all. We haven't had any problems with it. I religiously maintain it.
Replacement car suggestion idea: Used 2013+ electric car, like a Leaf, Spark EV, 500e, or Focus Electric. Great for commuting and errands (most people don't use a second car for anything more than that); the other car can be for long trips. Cheaper to buy, cheaper to maintain, quieter, and smoother than a new gas car.
Karla Coppock no, but then again I have the leather seats covered. My only complain is the convertible top where if it hasn't been used it doesn't go completely down.
You didn't abuse it and after all it is based on a golf so it should be decent at least but your are on a Toyota fan channel and Fahad this Dieselgate scandal in the us so there you go..
The best thing about the first generation beetles was you could turn them into a cool looking, fiberglass bodied, dune buggy. That made them really fun!
Have a 2015 Beetle. Bought it new. Have 32k on it now. I am in the minority, but I love everything about it. There’s a few of us out here lol. I knew what I was getting. I have several cars. It’s my hobby, have had too many cars to list here, but this 15 VW is one of my favorite cars I’ve bought. Lol, the day I purchased it, they tried steering me towards a few Golf models. I like their feel too, but only wanted the Beetle. My wife was surprised that I wanted one, considering I have a Challenger R/T and a 300c. Just a me thing. Handles like a go-kart. I’ll drive it till the wheels fall off, and when they do whenever, I’ll rebuild it and keep going.
Hi, Scotty, I wanna know how often the engine oil should be changed, when the engine is consuming oil and I am regularly filling it to the max with the new oil??? Thanks in advance..
Personally, The Beetle A5 (2012-2019) is a wonderful vehicle. Amazing design, leaps better than the New Beetle, and mine's 10 years old, still going strong.
Well, outside my door right now is a Fiat 500 and a VW New Beetle. One of them has to go because I don't need 2 cars, but I don't want to part with either of them because I love them both.
In Brazil, the Beetle is called Fusca and lot of people love this car. It's kinda relic here, some guys even pay a small fortune for one of these in good condition and there are meetings of owners every year around the country. My father had one 25 years ago and he jokes that the only thing you need to repair a Fusca is some wires and pliers.
I bought a 2012 4 days before the last Beetle was made. Red with red interior trim, only 43,000 miles on it. I paid $7,500 for it. It was dumb luck I bought that car. I just bought it for the low miles, now I love it! I didn't know they were going to quit making them.

Key problem is that it isn't cheap. People like to bash the Japanese for making cheap small cars, but that's the key to them. They are cheap.
People bashed Japanese cars for being cheap, but yet they last longer than rivals from other countries...
You mean USED to be cheap. Now they cost more than the domestics. The only exception is Nissan but they're crap.
yup buying half a car that isnt that reliable or fun to drive for a lot of money isnt smart.
Cheap and reliable. Only way to make that happen is sourcing quality parts and having tough quality control
Nissan's are some of the most poorly rated vehicles year after year. They rarely make a top 10 or even top 20 list of vehicles to buy. The Golf and Jetta were the tops picks in their sector year after year even during the diesel problem.

I just got a used '15 Beetle 1.8L w/ turbo and I'm loving it so far!
The Beetle body on the Golf chassis makes for one wild cornering machine!
Also, at 6’4” tall, trust me when I say the Beetle has the most headroom of any vehicle out there. Something that Scotty apparently doesn’t have to worry about. Oh, and I’m on my 2nd new beetle, and maybe my 6th VW.
are they “reliable”
My dad loves and only buys Toyotas, but the only car his willing to buy other than a Toyota is a old school vw beetle. Its one of his dream cars lol.
Buy him One and Repair it with him, Trust me its perfect fun with a couple of Beers and fixing the car
The Old school VW vans look amazing too!
I've recently bought a 2010 new beetle convertible , is fun to drive and it's a cute little car lol
I have a 2006 new beetle convertible and it’s great except the roof leaks oops
My girlfriend got a used one and its a fun little car but man working on it sucks. Its nothing but plastic
@@mustbefamousjr4888 worth buying a 2013 beetle with 66k mikes on it?
I had a 71 Super also. Man I miss that car.
twice?
That's reliable? The Ford 289 V8, I rebuilt only once in my life and still strong...Now that's reliable; btw still have my 66 Mustcoupe!
Can you do a video on the end of the Toyota Celica?
Don Pablo I have a 1984 Toyota Celica loaded it’s red it’s still runs
Americans don't want coupes, anymore.
Don Pablo good idea
How about celiac gt4
I wish they were gravitating towards sedans like you say. The truth is much bleaker- crossovers
Loved my '98 New Beetle, and my '07 PT Cruiser.
Never had any problems with either of them.
🤮
Must've been remote control cars.
@@billycausgrove9657
Why would they be remote control?
Why a Pt cruiser ? You ok homie ?
@@billycausgrove9657 🤣
My first car was an '83 Rabbit. It had no third gear and major steering problems, but boy did I ever love that car. When she finally died, I got an '87 Fox, also with steering issues. I sawed out the back seat and put an electric fireplace back there. Hung stockings over it for Christmas. Those were the days.
They need to keep it dead, Putting the engine in the front was the worst thing that ever happened to that car, they should have never brought it back in 99' ... The car was originally designed to be economic with easy maintenance now that car is the EXACT opposite ...Every time I see a beetle in a driveway, it's on a jackstand Or it is taken apart because someone is trying to fix that piece of Eurotrash And anyone I met that ever owned one had issues,
Keye T yup. American cars here only!
Lol. I always see them on jackstands too.
David Klimmek Shut up David .
Keye T true story
Hope they put the engine back in the back. Low boost Diesel with 60hp from 2L. They can bring back the Beetle with that
I thought the newer ones (last 5 years) were pretty cool. Porsche design and all...
Fun fact:
The interior of every used new beetle smells like melted plastic crayons and wet dog.
So you been in One.
Seem to be more than one.
Logλn L try at 2013 or newer beetle with the revamped design.
This is 100 percent true. Such bad crayon smell.
Could be the fake people that drive them?
I had a friend who had a Golf/Rabbit and one day when my car was dead we rode to college together. The weather had deposited 2-3 inch thick ice on I-94 and that car would slip but the FWD kept pulling very safely & predictably. I was very impressed by that especially as we passed nearly every other car brand getting into school.
Herbie the Love Bug, #53...R.I.P. 😢
My friend had a 2014 beetle. She was stopped at a red light when a suv slammed into her from behind and pushed her into the car in front so hard the airbags deployed. She walked away with a few scratches and for that reason the new beetle is a good car to me.
No I believe it’s a good car because she was able to walk away from a major accident. I know it’s not reliable but it is safe
Noted 👍-beetle owner
that's a surprise as you're not supposed to change auto tranny fluid.
I have a bug 2015 1.2 TSI turbo....I love every second of it
Great vid Scotty, love the history that you gave.
Not fair to call that engine non-sport. It can be just a quick as a GTI, same mods apply to the 1.8T.
I like and get a kick out of ur picture inserts!...😆 keep up the gr8 job. 🖒
I love it.
Awww, I'm glad I got me another one. I love my yellow Bug!
Since 1998 we have had three Beetles and never had any repairs or problems with them. Our latest Beetle is Dune and we love it.
They are soo cute though 🌸✨
Designed to appeal to teeny and tweeny age girls
Eeeehhhhh I like the older ones better. Yes they where originally made by Adolf but they where still great cars

I lived in Mexico a while. They used the old model as taxis in Mexico City. Those things were taken up mountains and through bad road conditions.
I drive an 84 vw golf! Diesel. Love that car so much.
Jealous! I'd totally daily drive a Mk I Golf/Rabbit/GTI if I could
Had an 84 Jetta diesel mated to a 5 speed manual transmission. Phenomenal car!
Haven't seen a Mk1 Rabbit/Jetta around these parts in ages...they all rotted out years ago from the road salt. :(
I only continuous problem with my 98 vw beetle was headlights.
Good info Scotty
I wish that I had kept my 1975 “Beetle”. That was one of the best vehicles that I ever owned. I could do all of the maintenance on it, myself.
Had a 74 Super Beetle and a '80 Rabbit. Just bought an '04 Beetle TDI. They run like a top, with regular maintenance.
Should have brought back the Kahrman Gia!
They were going to. That's what they were gonna call the Audi TT. I think there were licencing issues with naming it after another coach builder though.
cekmore Gato 🤣
Have 3 TDI beetles, 50 mpg paid about 3K for each of them. 5 speeds. Gotta stay away from the automatics. Fun to drive cars with the diesel!
Great vid Scotty, keep them coming!
you need hot radiator water for heat..was design, not issue
Great analysis.
No kidding. I can't remember the last time I saw a beetle commercial on TV or internet.
i dont use tv so i wouldn't know
2011??? my new beetle is a 1999 which I think was the first year. BTW I like it... Its fun, 5 Speed though...
It did have a very successful Superbowl ad, Volkswagen just never kept up with updates really. They should've made a GTI version
No one who bought one new, bought a second one to replace it.
See also, Jeep Liberty.
I did I had a original then a 99, a 2006 now I have a 2014 and I’m thinking of buying a 2019.
I'm in the market to buy a new car and would go for another beetle if they still had an available manual transmission but they stopped offering it in 2017
15 yeas from now: ‘’the beetle is back!’’
Would not surprise me. Probably an electric car.
HOPEFULLY 😅😂
2001 2.0 manual trans 234k miles. Only problem I've had is a fuel pump went out at 200k miles. I still own it. I've bought 3 more VWs 1 Audi 1 Porsche and they've all been great cars. Better ride drive and comfort than any Toyota or Honda I've owned.
The flower option for the interior was a throwback to the 50's beetles. They had a little vase with flowers really rare now to find
I just got my first car, a 2001 beetle tdi automatic that had 69,000 miles for $1800. What do you guys think???
buy a gigantic set of tools and get ready
With that many miles you may be alright for a little bit lol
Also you HAVE to change the timing belt every 100k, and if you aren’t sure if the PO changed it then change it anyways
Drive GENTLY!!!! The "Auto-tragic" transmission is fragile.
at 69k miles that diesel is barely broken in. too bad vw used such cheap plastic inside. Love the alh diesel. i have 2 beetle tdi's
I couldn't imagine owning any other car.
did you know that the original Volkswagen beetle was designed by the chap named Adolph? He called it the "peoples wagon" aka "the volks-wagen"
We had a 2002 New Beetle - lowest possible model with manual transmission. We drove it for 16 years and never took it in for any type of repair.
Scotty Kilmer, those expensive automatic transmissions that you are reffering to as expensive to fix are manufactured by Aisin/Toyota in Japan.
Xavier Lemos Also Jatco was in the mix.
Yes, for a couple of years I think. It was a 5 speed vs 4 speed for the previous one. The Aisin is now a 6 speed.
Lol really? You have any links? I want to see :P

@Karla Coppock My old jetta smelt like burnt crayons! i loved that car
You didn't abuse it and after all it is based on a golf so it should be decent at least but your are on a Toyota fan channel and Fahad this Dieselgate scandal in the us so there you go..
Are you going to buy another one?
The best thing about the first generation beetles was you could turn them into a cool looking, fiberglass bodied, dune buggy. That made them really fun!
Sad news for all my fellow Beetle lovers. :(
You will find them again if VW decides to build one w/AN ELECTRIC MOTOR IN THE REAR.

I’ll drive it till the wheels fall off, and when they do whenever, I’ll rebuild it and keep going.
landyachtfan79 I’ve wanted one forever..
Well done. Great pictures, as usual! Anybody who bought the "new" Beetle obviously, knew nothing about the original one.
I've seen so many crossovers on the roads these days that I'd rather buy a classic car
My 1st car, the 1967 Bug, midnight blue. Finally retired it with over 243,000 miles.
The old beetle remained in production far after 79. They produce them in Mexico.
PRODUCED being the word. They rolled the last one off the assembly line years ago.
too bad they didn't sell them in the US, couldn't pass any safety standards. Mexico had none, and the air-cooled engine is perfect for their climate.
they stopped producing them in mexico in 2010
