In today’s narrated adventure, we travel to Goshen, Virginia; to document the world famous Norfolk & Western 611. Operating along the Buckingham Branch’s main route through the Shenandoah Valley, this line sees regular service by Amtrak’s Cardinal service as well as some run-through CSX freights, making this the closest thing to a mainline steam excursion one can see on the east coast.
Seen in this videos are chases of the 9am and 2:30pm departures from Goshen, as well as many spots on the line between there and Staunton, Virginia. While Amtrak wasn’t running on the date of our visit, we did manage to catch a CSX run through grain train taking the BB mainline. Lots of radio communications between crew members and dispatch can be heard throughout the video as well.
Narration is less frequent in this video compared to others, because I wanted to give the mighty 611 time to make her voice heard. The crew put on quite a show, with plenty of great whistle quilling and some AMAZING stack talk while working their way up the 1.5% North Mountain grade.

Amazing footage you got! Crazy fact I just read about the other day: Members of the Norfolk & Western Historical Society have apparently discovered from records that 611 actually pulled Dwight Eisenhower's campaign special when he was running for President in 1952, between Columbus, Ohio and a border town in West Virginia (Ike himself was on board)! Absolutely incredible.

Gotta she her in tow coming down the old Shenandoah Valley Railroad main line few months back. Lord willing, I'll be riding behind her early November. As a local to the Shenandoah and Luray valleys, I got to laugh at the way that you pronounced Staunton. So f🎉ar is it's spelled you pronounced it right. Locals on the other hand pronounce it a little differently. Should sound more like Stanten. City was named for the wife of a lieutenant governor during the colonial days. I guess that's where the pronunciation comes from. If it makes you feel better it's one in over 20 locations throughout Virginia everyone pronounces wrong according to the locals.

  • @roberthughes9773

    Let's pronounce it like a Virginian: StaN-ton.
