  • From the archives of the Western Railway Museum comes this all new series of archival railroad videos. Noted railroad cinematographer Don Kehl photographed railroad all over the United States starting in 1955. Dynamo Productions and Hunter Lohse have teamed up to present to you this look back in time to the Golden Age of Railroading. We begin this series with a look at the last great frontier of steam in the United States for a mainline railroad, the Norfolk & Western.
In late 1956 and early 1957, Don Kehl made two trips over to the N&W to document their operations on 8mm film. Part 1 of this look at N&W steam tales us to Hagerstown where we follow a mixed train to Shenandoah, VA behind a K class 4-8-2. Also witness Y class 2-8-8-2s on freight assignments as well as the streamlines K class Mountains on passenger trains. We also pay a visit to N&W bridge line the Winston-Salem Southbound where we see hand-me-down 2-8-0s as well as 2-8-2 Mikados handling the freight assignments between Winston-Salem, and Wadesboro, NC.
Enjoy this fascinating look back in time to the N&W: The Alamo of Steam!

Nice to see some footage of Winston-Salem, the Winston-Salem District (Punkin Vine) wasn't documented no where near as much as the other two thirds of the Shenandoah Division, a lot of people don't know that it was part of the Shenandoah Division.

Every time I watch these videos I get flashbacks of my obsession with steam trains when I was 6.

Thanks for sharing some footage of my hometown of Winston-Salem! I’ve kind of felt like the city's status as a railroad hub back in the day has gone ignored by some, so it’s great to see steam action from back in the day there! The Southbound especially had some interesting equipment.

Wow, what a amazing show! Id love to see some Great Northern railroad footage if you can get your hands on it because its extremely rare and although it was a massive class 1, footage is almost nonexistent.

Nice video! It's nice to see some familiar territory with the WSSB (Winston-Salem is my hometown, and where I grew up or all but two of the years of my life so far) though I'm sad that there was no footage of their ex-N&W 4-8-0s. As far as I know, 611 operated on the WSSB on occasion in the 50s when it wasn't hauling the named trains, great video!
About the trestle, it actually still exists, although hidden by many trees now. There's a path that leads from Old Salem to Salem Lake, I passed under the bridge many times. It's still used by NS to this day, ironically, the WSSB still exists as well, though under joint ownership of N&W and ACL's successors: NS and CSX.

I didn't know that Norfolk & Western had 2-8-2 Mikados
This is why in october sky 4501 was inspired by those locomotives
