@@aleu650 Rotary OY makes it look so easy. I find myself wondering why R12 couldn't keep a relatively constant RPM while the locomotive creeps forward. The rack system gives them huge tractive advantages that OY and her pushers don't have.

    • @matthewkromer1697
      @matthewkromer1697 3 ปีที่แล้ว +127

I suspect the locomotive doesn’t have a good way to move at very slow speeds; he’s probably got the reverser all the way forward and when he opens the regulator it doesn’t have a way to creep along at low speeds.

Don't forget, this isn't fresh snow, but old, all winter snow, as this is the clearing of the line in spring after winter closure. Rotaries are far better in fresh snow than in this old, compacted, almost concrete like snow.
That, and they have a lot to learn...

To everyone complaining how slow and inefficient it is:
First of all was this recorded in April, so the Snow has been slightly melting and re-freezing for Months, being compacted in the Process. It is more like solid Ice, although it looks snowy. The bent Steel Plate at 19:10 just shows how hard the Snow is. Rotary Snow Blowers work very well with fresh, powdery Snow but aren't built for rock solid Snow like this. In the Video, the Snow Blower is being tested after 10+ Years of Restoration, which unfortunately happened to be completed in Spring, so waiting for ideal Snow Conditions would have taken 6-8 Months.
The Dampfbahn Furka-Bergstrecke is a Museum and there is no Commercial Traffic on the Rail Line, so being slow and inefficient doesn't matter too much. The Rail Line is closed during Winter anyway (it goes almost 2200 m high which means the upper Parts are prone to Avalanches), so it was never intended to clear all the Snow. As stated above, the Video shows just a Test Run. If they had to clear all the Snow ASAP, they would probably use the modern Electric Snow Blower that you can see at 01:12. Thinking a 100+ Year old Steam Engine would be used to do any actual work is ridiculous, not only because it is slow, inefficient and expensive but also for the Risk of wearing out and potentially damaging a historic Machine, as proven by the bent Steel Plate.

      Dampfschiff Stettin in Hamburg:
      th-cam.com/video/bWQM1eQKdLY/w-d-xo.html
      Sulzer-Dampfmaschine in Schlieren:

So if you're younger, whatever happens in life, always find time to work out 3-5 times a week and you won't deal with many health problems. I intend to get back in shape and that should fix it. Also eating healthy ofc, less fat/sugar in your diet.

    Toller Bericht !

Would help a LOT (and make life a lot easier too) if they vented all the waste locomotive STEAM (with coal residues) directly into the blower cage - so that the steam is JETTED FORWARDS, same as if using a water blaster..
Blowing super-heated steam, directly onto that hard packed snow, inside the blower fan casing, would help remove any buildup before it stalled the fan.
Also - by NOT RAMMING THE BEGEZUZ out of it at speed, but slowly easing forwards, with heated waste steam and a spinning rotary blower fan - that would make super easy work of what they are making into an almost impossible job - with a mental attitude of - "just push it ahead - as we shove a cold spinning fan into it".

This was a test run, more or less to show that everything works. The tracks are not opened for business at this time of the year. The snow need to smelt and the avalanches need to go down before the track can be opened. This is just a test and it is still too cold for the avalances. The aim was not to free the tracks but to test the machine and its limits and for the crew to get more experience how to operate it. As you see, all the machinery is kept well maintained, clean and lubed. The operators for sure know very well, what they are doing. The expectancy was that the conditions are too hard for the machine, but it managed to cope with it, but with a lot of effort. The machine should be used during and after snow fall, when the snow is fresh.

Bought this for my small back deck in the Eastern Sierra. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxoHYZbq5g9fkcAtinlTqstNlje-UQkCHN We get A LOT of HEAVY snow so I was a bit skeptical but it was worth it! After the first storm of the year this has exceeded expectations! It throws snow very well, even 10-12” + that said the more it piles up the harder it is to maneuver the machine. It is exceptionally light weight and overall exactly what I was looking for. If you have a large amount of snow and a lot of area to clear, you may consider something with a drive engine to help maneuverability, but for decks, second stories, roofs etc, you can’t beat the light weight to great snow throwing ratio. Side note, the chute rotator is a bit flimsy and it initially didn’t seem to work, after a few uses it seems to have loosened up.

@@DJTAZ1996 bud it can’t feellll more cost effective. It’s literally not. Bro thinks feelings are involved in money. Also steam can’t even go as long as diesel without need breaks for a few hours

Very interesting video, thank you for sharing. This old machines are full of poetry : fortunately there are guys to preserve them and make them work, it is part of their heritage, well done! And too bad for the madmen of "progress" which will make them die quickly and "efficiently".

All in the name of efficiency. You can never have enough efficiency when it's your job to turn a profit.

One thing that I noticed when the fan became clogged with the packed snow was that they had no steam or hot water pipes around the cutter box. Other steam rotaries that I have seen videos of have had those for reducing the clogging effect when cutting heavy and packed snow. Films made by the Southern Pacific on Donner Pass in the 1950's have shown their rotaries in action. I believe that they had steam pipes around the intake fan. OY, on the Cumbres and Toltec, deals with this same heavy spring snow pack when it is used to open that railroad in the spring after it being closed for several months. There are several videos on YT of it in action. When my grandfather worked on the Northern Pacific, he said that they sometimes used explosive charges to loosen the snow so that the rotaries could chew into it. On the highway snow crew in Oregon, we had the rotary plows with the horizontal rotating cutters feeding the fan and the only times we got clogged were once when one of the guys picked up a chunk of a fallen tree and once when another operator found a parked car under the snow by ripping its bumper off. We had shear pins in the shaft couplers that would break if you hit something that solid and protect the gear box from damage. Then we had to dig the snow out, pull the tree trunk out and replace the pins. The car bumper had to be removed with a torch.

      yes agree above
      get on with it
that engineer operating the snow machine could do with six arms to do what he was doing
so slow im sure it was meant to use man power not steam power.

It might be faster just to wait for the snow to melt

This old engine might not be great a plowing deep snow but I bet it had carried thousands of people to their success to the cities and to the mountains.
