I don't think of the FLD 120 as a "poor man's hood truck." I think of it as a "hood truck a man can do LTL frozen in NYC with." I watched so many drivers with W9"s and 379's struggle to get into spots in NYC that the FLD would have much easier. Perhaps not the most stylish of trucks, but they were definitely my favorite to drive. I agree about the gears. 3:70's are great for regular heavy on hills driving. But at 70mph the tach is pointing north for sure. But all things considered I think your mileage ain't bad.
I used to want my own truck…then I went to work for a smaller trucking outfit (my 2nd driving gig…first one was more large scale). Owner was younger, had 8 trucks. After seeing all the BS he went through with…nah i’ll stay a company driver
All of your points are very good and agree with all. For the Boss if you ever do change rearend gears think about 2.64 and run that 5EK cat in 11th gear direct you will be at a slightly lower rpm and direct is the most efficient gear for mechanical resistance in the drivetrain. Call Bruce at Pittsburgh Power and he will explain things better than I can. I did that to a series 60 and it did help efficiency up .5 mpg. I would also suggest a oil sample on a truck you are buying (if the oil hasn’t been changed) to see about contaminates in the oil and do a rigdig. It’s a carfax for trucks basically for history on the truck. If you have a good mechanic take it to them and have them look it over before buying. That couple hundred bucks can save you a ton of heartache. I agree the W9 is the Cadillac of trucks just can’t afford one myself and I live in the town KW’s are built in Chillicothe Ohio. I should get a local guy discount. 😂😂😂. Be sure to keep a fresh crankshaft damper on that 5EK every 500,000 miles to protect that crankshaft that is the one weak spot on that engine is people don’t change the damper and they break crankshafts once they get shot. Great video.
Good advice for newbies, i had a fld flat top , it was a great money maker , run 12.7 an a 10 speed , i have a real soft spot for them , you do realize that is you take the cab off all those trks they are pretty much the same , drive lines, engines , transmissions , suspensions , you got a great trk keep it up an you'll make $$$$$$
I know what you are talking about brother I worked for a lot of different companies and went owner operator about 6 months ago and it's hard when you first get going and you better have a safety net or you are in big trouble
My 1st semi was a Mac cruiserliner cabover with a 5 speed stick shift I miss that beauty.
Just subscribed, glad I found your channel. I’ve been trucking a long time and you are really entertaining. You took some pretty big leaps my friend.
I have a 120 & 112 & 3 end dumps a sleeper & day cab
My first was a 96 vnl with a M11 Cummins. I loved that truck. My biggest regret was selling it. It was a huge mistake.
Great info
