I own a 2016 GMC Canyon with the 2.8L "Duramax" engine. We know about other trucks but probably because of government/lobbyist manipulations we are stuck with what we're stuck with. I've lusted for a HiLux for decades and frankly the Amarok would probably be best option for me. Neither are available here. I did see a HiLux for sale once on Ebay that was practically new but couldn't be used on road for 25 years if ever here. It was sold as an off-public road ranch vehicle only.

Actually any one over here in the US doing what 4wd action does is doing it in mid size trucks or Suvs too. Lots of Toyota Tacomas! I myself have a 2008 Nissan Frontier 4x4 4.0L V6 crew cab long bed and its served me well for work and play and is still running strong with 290,000 miles on it. The mid size truck or ute market in the US is a big deal these days and Jeep has even gotten into the game with the new Gladiator.

I've had a 2019 Z71 Colorado now for 14 months and I love it. For me, its for some towing and a lot of traveling to and from work. For me, compared to the Hilux and Ranger, the Colorado drove the best on the road without a load. I had my mind set on a Hilux, but it didn't feel right. As much as people can review Utes and say what's the best and what's not, you really gotta take them for a drive yourself.

I just bought the brand new Mitsubishi MR Triton GLS Premium and the car is a bloody ripper, really blown away by it on and off road. One amazing feature you didn't mention is that the Triton has the ability to run AWD on sealed roads (like a landcruiser), i tow my boat all over the joint and when i am in the hills or its wet, this feature is legit a game changer!! So much more grip and safety compared to rwd, on gravel roads is equally as good.. the fact you get Leather, heated seats, led head lights, rear aircon, 360 degree cameras, difflock, 7 years factory warranty, 4 years road side assist and can get them for $46-48k brand new... amazing!

I bought a Mitsubishi triton yesterday and I’m pleasently surprised with the results
Looking forward to picking it up .
Today, 18th Feb I’ve had my triton for 1 week and absolutely love it, it is so comfortable and nice to drive.
I have had a ML Mercedes and a GLC Mercedes in the past, but this triton is much quieter than both vehicles, I traded my C250 diesel for the triton and don’t regret it one little bit. It is packed with heaps of safety features similar to Mercedes, but at a fraction of the cost of course.
I love the 10 year warranty, fixed price services and roadside assist.

Thanks for a great review. We certainly are spoilt for choice in dual cab utes. One extra advantage of the Triton transmission is the centre differential which allows all wheel drive on bitumen. The Amarok is the only other with this feature. When towing the tradie trailer around town on damp greasy roads it eliminates wheelspin and is more surefooted. I have a 2017 GLS Triton for this reason.

So glad you guys made this video! There were close to no reviews out there, at the time of my purchase. To emphasis this point!! I was the first in NSW to have an ARB bullbar and therefore most likely the first to have this model of Triton completely kitted out (by November 2019). The Triton is the most comfortable cab and car to drive. Plus it also has the smallest turning circle which has really come in handy. Lastly definitely the best value for money. Not only that but some of the greatest variety of trails on the planet. We even have enormous parks dedicated just to 4x4ing. Hell, California alone has nine of them and they aren't small either. For example, Kern County park is on 26,000 acres and Ocotillo Wells is on 40,000 acres of land. Why do you think we have so many off-the-shelf offroad worthy vehicles? Such as Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, Ford f-150/Ranger Raptors, Chevy Colorado ZR2, Toyoda Tacoma/Tundra/4Runner TRD Pros (yes, made and sold in the USA), Ram 1500 Rebel, Ram Power Wagon, GMC Sierra 2500HD / 3500HD with All Terrain X and 1500 AT4 just to name a few, I mean the list really does go on. If you don't know Ultra4 racing you have to check it out! 4x4 Action is an amazing TH-cam channel and Australia is an amazing country too. The information was top notch, but the scoring system was unfair. Their final recommendation didn't come from the vehicles, but their scoring system.
Here's how I would go about it:
First of all, don't get a Ute/Bakkie/Truck you don't actually need it. And if that doesn't work, then it's Point Two: buy used. You can have the price while getting some extra accessories thrown in. Even reliability isn't a concern, since you could buy x2-x3 Used Utes for the price of x1, and so the Used vehicles have a higher probability of lasting longer/cheaper.
Okay, not convinced, so you are looking to get a New Ute. Then disregard the Dmax, Colorado, BT-50, X-Class, Navara, and Hilux. For the best value, go for the new Mitsubishi Triton. Although you can get a better Ute than this at a lower price if you go Used. So this option could be easy to dismiss. For longevity stick to the Ford Ranger. It was developed in Australia for it's conditions, has surprisingly high quality, heaps of parts, dealers, mechanics, and accessories. And it's one of the best contenders with a really good resale value. But as pointed above, a Used Ute will last longer thanks to simple economies.
So if you have the cash for New, and are dead-set, don't even think about that. Get the VW Amarok V6 which has a more useful tray, much better on-road traction, heaps of power, and one of the best interiors. Sure it's not like the Dmax for best quality, nor does it have the best support, but if you look after it it's going to be fine as it had a decade to prove itself. These are the correct and objective conclusions based upon the options and information we currently have for the Australian Market. I simply don't care about the badge/logo, I only care about the product.
Things will be different depending on your locality (prices, support, conditions) and your personal needs (rock crawling, reliability, certain accessories, etc etc). Duh. So yeah, don't get a Ute, or if you are get a Used one that's suitable for YOU. Otherwise if you're going to buy a Brand New one it's mostly a case of "money is no object" so splurge on the luxuries YOU desire and keep it maintained.

i drive the Amarok V6 in the Aventura version and it addresses a few of the issues mentioned. It has hill descent so setting the downhill speed is so easy but even more interestingly and importantly it works in reverse as well. Reversing down a hill you couldn't climb all the way can be and actually is the most dangerous part of off roading. Amarok protects from this. The lack of a low range is another non issue. Its 8 speed and pure grunt enables it to surge through, over and around anything. Negotiating rockfalls can sound fussy but you have total control. The transmission might get hot but I've never noticed it from the driver's seat. The grunt at 200kW and 580nm stock is phenomenal, the ute is a dragster off the mark and overtaking, even with a big trailer on up the passing lanes just so easy. The initial lag from intersections around town is disappointing but I think a safety factor VW has built in because our Porsche is exactly the same and a bloody nuisance. Is the Amarok Aventura good value for money? What are bragging rights worth? Funny thing is the only ute drivers who'll routinely take you on are Triton drivers. They're an odd bunch for trying especially when they're not too keen on 'Rok dust.

Especially the latest 2020 face lifted model, with the top spec V Cross. This Mother looks mean, and shows an aggressive front face, which is really down to those *Bad Boy* headlights. Who out there can remember those "Bad Boy" stickers, all the rage in the mid 90s, we stuck to our ride's rear window. Yeah baby, mean as. Check out the ad campaign's very well executed special effects Cinematography. Simply Google 2020 Isuzu D-Max, V Cross...

Ive had Navara Tekna for abt 3 yrs, done 75kkm+, added 2 inch susp lift and AT tires. Never had any quality issue with it. It goes every offroad I want: mud, hills, wet meadows - no problem at all. I dont tow much or dont drive beaches, soft sand in forests tracks has never been a problem for it. Comfort on road is much higher then Hillux or Ranger. I love it. Very fuel efficient: usually I get 6,5-7,5L/100k. Highly reccomend.

1 thing I’ll never understand is the whole “Hilux resale” thing.
Why in the world is a Ute that’s so basic, drives rough as guts and has had huge reliability problems, known for its resale 😂
    It’s a 45k Ute with a 55k price tag.
They used to be bullet proof 7 years ago but I don’t see how people are still brainwashed all these years later. The Hilux is a dud compared to the others

I've done extensive research on the dual cab market for late 2019/early 2020 and I'm pleased to see everything scores exactly as i've been seeing, with the Triton head and shoulders above the rest.
And I drive a toyota at the moment!
Hats off to you boys and girls, I've been loving seeing the success of the channel during this transition period to TH-cam, I know the growth can seem frustrating and slow but the channel is aching to explode with viewers / subscribers, It can't be far off. Thank you for embracing the change and leading the charge.

About time a real review and not a paid review from ford or holden that you see on the other surposed 4wd channel that you see.
I have a 2012 dmax and it's hit 200000 and in the last 6 months I've done the 2 inch lift and the bull bar I brought it stock in 13 with like 65000 on it.
My main criteria when bying it was it had to be relieabity and cheap to run and have all the mod cons that I needed so I did get the top spec lst.
As for the kms it will see me though to that 500 thousand the next ute will 100% be a dmax and the 2020 ones are coming with factory lockers in the rear and more torque and yes I haven't tuned it or done anything like that.

Had my Triton for just over a year, within the first month of having it my family and I did a half lap of Australia, starting from Perth, to Darwin down to Adelaide then back to Perth. Towed a 1.5t plus gear Jayco Camper, did around 20,000 KMs, including alot of off road driving, especially in the Pilbara and Kimberly's. It's a fantastic ute, even if it was 10k more it would be worth it!

We are also currently looking at the ute market for our potential retirement vehicle. We will see how the new model 2020 D Max goes after you guys play with it.
