I was going to choose the ranger but seeing where the airbox and alternator sit is a changing my decision to the Triton. For the power and performance of a more affordable dual cab, and it has performed really well on this segment each year which shows its weight in gold.
I drive a 2015 MQ Triton and have modified it for both off-roading and touring. Have addressed the suspension and power issues with a lift, UCAs and engine tune. The thing is an absolute weapon in my humble opinion now. I love watching these ute of the year videos as it gives me a great insight into all the pros and cons of the modern day dual cab. That being said, I’d be confident in picking the Triton as my number one always!!
The triton for years now has always had good praise for value and capabilities. I personally like the ranger but when I go to buy a 4x4 I'm going to go with the triton
I came close to getting a new Triton a couple of years ago, would have done the deal until I noticed no rear locker. Salesman was a clown but eventually it became clear - no rear locker available for any Triton in Malaysia. Totally wasted my time even looking at it, cos any aftermarket fit would screw the warranty.
@@bigglyguy8429 that's not actually true. The dealer would have to show that the locker was what cause the warranty issue. If they can't do that the warranty is valid. Same goes for any aftermarket accessories
@@jamiemckennon1944 Well that sounds nice in concept but here in Malaysia I wouldn't want to rely on consumer laws or whatever. They don't call them Stealerships for nothing, and all dealers are on the lookout for ways to avoid being on the hook for warranty work. I guess in Australia or the UK you could make a case, maybe. I also have to question my willingness to get my hard-earned to a company that tried to fob me off with a vehicle incapable off-road in the first place?
@@bigglyguy8429 mate I wouldn't underestimate how far an unlocked Triton will go. It has the best 4wd system with traction control on the market and it will outdrive a lot of 4wds with rear lockers. Also with the money you'll save you can easily do aftermarket lockers front and rear and bigger tyres with a lift. Then you'll have a 4wd 10x more capable than the rest
@@bigglyguy8429 I have an MQ Triton. 2 inch left, 31 inch KO2 Goodrich tyres. just recently i did a trip with a bunch of rear locked cars. I made it through most places just with the traction control. Mind you i do have a rear locker on order
This is probably the first Ute of the Year where I thought a Ranger would actually be a good choice, but my heart is with the MR Triton, which is why I bought myself a 2022 GLX+. If you're not putting a big canopy on it, the overhang doesn't matter that much, and the excellent value for money is hard to go past. Plus it's a tried and tested platform with very little major issues, and there is loads of aftermarket accessories and support for it.
Do not forget that Mitsubishi is the most successful vehicle manufacturer in the Dakar Rally which is mechanical torture for any vehicle. Mitsubishi is an engineering powerhouse of the world, they dabble in much more than auto mobiles. They make cars for shits and giggles. Best Value for money vehicle by a long shot. Plus the 10 year warranty cant go wrong.
The Ranger isn’t that good of a design, typical slack specifications by Ford, they are big, big deal and I often wondered why people bought them when they don’t even go off road, big lump of aluminium and other flaky metals to con the buyer.
I wish they did more for the suspension department so we can get more value and choices for aftermarket suspension but my MQ has done an absolutely job since I got my in 2018!
I have a 2017 MQ triton and personally think it’s one of the best I’ve ever had. I’ve set it up for work and camping and absolutely love it!! In my opinion I still think triton takes the cake for best Ute as the pricing is just unmatched compared to most of the other vehicles and for what you get at such a price you can’t beat it!!!
My first ever brand new car, and first 4x4 was my current MQ Triton. I got the Sports Edition, mainly for the rear diff lock, and I've honestly never had to use it in over 4 years of ownership. I'm now starting the modification journey with lift, tires, chassis mount canopy all going on in the last year. Next up will be brakes, bar work and possibly a tune. One thing that strikes me on every one of these ute tests, is the Mr Everything role the Triton plays. The thing keeps up with the big boys in almost every regard. Thing only let down is the smaller engine, and even so, if you are wanting to tow a 3 tonne caravan, the mid-section ute market probably isn't for you tbh. Love the work lads!
I have a 2020 Triton & it's perfect for me. I never considered them until I watched your 2021 review. Spot on guys - it's a bit light for towing the hybrid caravan comfortably (though still a capable towing vehicle & the redarc brake system helps) but she's a mountain goat on 4x4 tracks and a comfortable long-distance tourer. Can't wait to take her up to the Cape next year.
The L200 (aka Triton) is so common in Europe and Africa, and is largely regarded as the Hilux alternative. The Eastern Europeans and Russians love them, they tend to do better in colder weather because they are prone to overheating in really tough ground. Good ute, especially for the money and versatility
@@KarlNiblockдействительно, русские уважают Мицубиси за систему полного привода, потому что это лучшее решения на скользких и снежных дорогах и дорогах с плохим покрытием. Привет из России!😊
I’m waiting on a Dmax to arrive early next year. Bloody stoked and keen to get into 4x4. Haven’t had a vehicle that’s been able to do anything for my entire life and the thought of driving anywhere at anytime and being comfortable that it’ll handle it is something like a dream! I’ve watched heaps of your reviews and went with the Dmax and I’m sure it won’t disappoint me!
After purchasing my first 4x4 a 21 GLS Triton I'd probably still buy another after the test results. I find it's nimble around town and my recent trip to Lost City proved it's capabilities on the standard tyre but I am eager to do some modifications. Thanks again guys for the video.
I currently drive a 90 series prado, is goes everywhere I need it to as a solid budget 4wd. If I were to choose I’d go with the Triton, very solid value for money in my opinion and well suited to the daily drive and the weekend off-roading that I do. Cheers
I bought a 2020 mr gls premium triton. I had no need for a tray/canopy. At 44k it was significantly cheaper than competitors at the time. It’s been fantastic so far. Only 30k kms and a lot of tracks
I have a Triton but addressed all the issues I could such as a dyno tune, UCAs, diff drop, front locker, long range tank, and a lot more. Stock was surprisingly capable with only some A/Ts, but it's a very different 4WD with all the mods. The best part was the cost of all my mods was probably about the same as the difference between the Ranger and my Triton when new, so the value is without question. Also, would love this comparison in 4K!
I drive an ldv t60 max. Love it at the moment. Just hope there will be more after market support. I reckon the D-Max should win Ute of the year. It has been really consistent in every challenge it faced.
Would love to see some SUV tests like the new Land Rover defender and Jeep Wrangler, compared with some of the more common 4x4 SUVs in Australia and New Zealand.
Jeep wrangler would be the most capable stock 4wd on the market, you will get hung up if its unlocked, but the rubicon is twin locked, if you hate to hear this, thats your issue, soild axel and twin locked win
I went with the Hilux because apart from all of the other points you raised, when you're on the Gibb River Road and need a replacement belt, filter, brake pads etc I can just go into any station along the route and they'll have one, not that you'll need one though! That actually happened at Home Valley Station to a guy camped beside us who needed a fuel filter after buying contaminated fuel. Try that with a Jeep or Amarok!
So you are saying you will go into the remote outback and not carry basic spares and rely on IF you can get one of what you may need on the way. Pretty risky things can and do happen
If I was to purchase a new dual cab today, I would pick the hilux, its price tag doesn't hurt the pocket as much as it used to and the aftermarket accessories catalougue is extensive, also ability to get it fixed almost anywhere around Australia and to be able to get parts easily is comforting and wins for me.. not to mention they have proven to be reliable in Australia's harsh conditions..
I think the triton is probably the best out off them, more budget friendly reliable and plenty off afternarket support plus its a Mitsubishi can't beat them 💪 and I drive a 1996 Mitsubishi pajero would love a brake upgrade kit the old girl is up for new brakes soon 😀
Best and fairest test, results and analysis yet! Out of just the six in this comparo, I'd be happy with the Triton. Bulletproof reliability and fantastic value. I could live with the compromises at that price point for what I'd do. But with a young family of 5, I'm In a 2011 Prado in this point of life, and quiet happily as well. Gotta keep my family safe in the Prado, right Bendix? 😏🤞 - Mitch
2021 GLX+ Triton owner since new, first test was a half lap, towing a Jayco Camper 20,000 KMs. Handled the rough stuff at el questro and other parts of the Kimberly and Pilbara, the Flinders ranges and lots of beach driving. It's a fantastic ute/car and I would 100% buy one again
Driving a ranger raptor (Diesel) and would pick the Triton as the best cost vs reward dual cab. Lots of ability to mod and aftermarket support, and significant cost saving vs the other dual cabs. Meaning drive away for another factory dual cab would be a Triton with most mods for more hard core offroading
Driving my 2021 MR GLS Triton just does it for me! My first car that I truly love to drive! As a 4wd legend says "it's a lil mountain goat!" And it gets me all around the Top End in comfort and great feel and I will always think it's the best ute for value 👌👌
After watching all that, I think I’ll keep my ‘93 ln106. It doesn’t beep at me, can modify it in my driveway, parts are relatively easy to come by and interchangeable between models, and is an absolute weapon off road. ‘No airbags, we die like men!’
Haha my 89 extra Cab diesel is like a zombie it doesn’t die and everything always works. My 03 Hilux diesel is like a luxury vehicle in comparison. Toyota Hilux is a disease with no vaccine..
Very fair testing on the latest versions of these utes and very fair results. I do feel like the Ranger did shine in the test and I love that they used customer feedback to get these results. I love my 2021 Dmax LSM, in my opinion it’s the perfect base for my needs and future plans for a family touring 4x4 🤙🏽 Ps. The Bendix brake upgrade kit would tick another mod off my ever growing list
I simply couldn’t look past the MR Triton GLS back in 2020 for $47k! It’s a weapon off road as, great on fuel and actually surprisingly torquey for such a small engine! I’ve gone to town on the mods like all of us here and with that has come the extra weight! The brakes are good, but it would definitely make for a far superior touring package with a bendix upgrade kit, to improve braking performance when needed on our ever growing and busy Aussie highways. Great review as always lads 👌🏼
@@jarrydmcmichael5408 they got me.. they had it on the lot for $48k + on roads. And I negotiated it for $43k with on roads paid. It's a October build 2020 automatic, but still the dealer got exactly what they wanted and I thought I scored haha
@@liamjackson5698 owned 5 Tritons over many years. Never an issue. 160k on my 2017 with no issues. You don't know what your taking about or work for a competitor.
I drive a 2022 Triton GLS and I think it should win this comparison. You can’t beat the value and reliability of the Triton. For a new comer into a 4wd I love my Triton and would love to upgrade my brakes to @bendix.
Like the last few 4WD test Shauno, you guys didn't disappoint. Real 4WD test unlike any other. My go to would be the Triton. Maybe a custom tune and modified rear seat area (not for everyone) to bring the weight forward of the rear axles and short tray. Brake over angle over touch (Poni lol), tested reliablility over new and 20k less when you need to send it is key for me and I'm not a fan of towing when exploring. Watch enough of you guys to know better. But from owning a great Pajero 2002 diesel for 14 years to a Hummer H3, what do I know :)
I've recently upgraded to a 2012 PX ranger! Sitting at 365,000kms I really do love it, the brakes do work well enough but as you can imagine its finally due for its first set of rear brake shoes and drums! I do really enjoy the new bt50! Being a mechanic for 20+ years I'm a toyota fan but Mazda and Isuzu getting it on together has me tickled pink!
I got a 2021 GSR Triton that I picked up early this year and I love it. Looks just like the one you mob tested (complete with same dents and scratches!). Perfect for my use, getting plenty of trips out camping and rockclimbing on the weekends in the Top End. No touring or towing, just a bunch of mates, with their gear and an esky in the back. Never owned a ute before, and I bloody love it. Great review guys, but for my money, I reckon the Triton is unbeatable.
Ranger all the way! I drive a 2019 bi turbo, and after 3 years I still look forward to climbing in to the driver’s seat every morning. It’s my work vehicle, my bush bashing weekender, and my family car where the wife and 3 boys are safe and comfortable. As much as I love it, and have loved customizing it to my needs, with permanent fridge, coffee machine, compressor and 360° lights, I’d trade it tomorrow for the new V6 and start all over again. Could use a brake upgrade though…
I drive a 2022 Toyota HILUX Rogue. I think the HILUX will and should win this comp 💯% & why? Because I’ve gone from Mitsubishi Tritons (because of Mitsubishi’s poor customer service and servicing over the past years) to this new HILUX. So far, Toyota all round and my up spec’d vehicle “less the brake upgrade” 🙏 is bloody awesome to say the least 🤩 Thanks guys ✌🏽
I just bought a brand new BT50 and safe to say I’m stoked with the car and definitely agree with this review! I feel like the BT and the Dmax are just stand out, all round fantastic cars, great at everything and not bad at anything! Thanks for the awesome review! Would also love to see a fuel economy test next time 🙌🏽👏🏽⚡️
I’ve recently ended up with a ML Triton and must say I’m pretty impressed with the off-road capability stock. For my money, when it comes to this years choice of Ute, I would have to pick the Hilux. The Toyota tax seems lower these days, but resale value should remain high. On top of that, great service support and plenty of Toyota service centres around the place for parts. Not sure why, but I feel the Hilux screams toughness. Maybe because ofTop Gear?!
as an American I'm insanely jealous of that Mitsubishi. it would be so perfect for me and I'm determined to go get one imported from Mexico. Same goes for that Isuzu, absolute dream trucks I want to import. in America all our cool trucks are alot bigger than this and struggle on tight turns and small skinny trails.
MR Triton - GSR. And reckon it would be Ute if the year as it’s an all rounder and good price factor for what you get. Great for daily run around and heading off the tarmac over the weekends. Of course nothing frightens a triton
Great review as always! I drive a 2019 Hilux and for me, it's perfect...apart from the brakes, which could do with an upgrade!! Ute of the year for me would be the Hilux for 2 reasons, 1 I'm just a big Hilux fan, and 2 their just so bushproof and easily upgradeable.
Ive got an MQ Triton, It does really well off road with its super select 4WD system. Although I'm always getting teased about owning a Triton. I'd like to see the Dmax win, I think with its engine it has plenty of room to make it into a great off-road and touring vehicle.
Tell the haters to go off-roading with you then, pretty sure your Triton will go where theirs will, might not do it just as gracefully, but at the end of the day when you are all together at the end of the track then you can say they overpaid for the same capability, you've seen it on this show yourself, it's largely to do with the guy in the drivers seat and the experience of the line they choose, look at how well Daryl the old Nissan gets wheeled with the right driver.
Buying a new one would be a hard choice, lots of great options. But for me it would probably end up being the Toyota. Love the practical details like the alternator placement and serviceability on it! However, for the climate I live in, a huge factor to consider would be how the different vehicles could handle the cold weather (can reach -40c or below). Now I'm driving a Toyota 4Runner -91, and it is awesome! Greetings from the land of Surströmming, Sweden
@@farzana6676 Haha yeah, that's partly true! Sweden is a long country you know. If you have the money and live where all you need is a hatchback, then that's of course a great choice. But that wont work everywhere. Especially if you're driving in -40 c and on roads with a thick layer of snow
I have an MQ triton and love it. Performs flawless off road and I’d 100% take it around Australia. I’d also throw a tray and canopy set up too. Best bang for buck ute
@@lukeballestrin7233 as i said mate look at the axle placement. A lot of people will throw a 1800 canopy on them and slap a trailer. These shouldn’t really see a canopy over 1600imo and then be very mindful of the trailer. That’s my opinion I’ve owned a mq very well modded
@@lukeballestrin7233 again all I’m saying is it’s the biggest issues with the tritons is that axle placement but that’s how they get the good turning circle.
Love the jab at the start about testing the softness of the armrests for reviewing a 4x4. I loved watching an actual review with relevant points, great content as always!
The Triton that was tested wasn’t the brand new one. The look of the stereo is slightly different and there’s a button above the volume lever on the steering wheel that allows you to see your cameras while driving. My GSR arrived into Aus at the end of July and has that capability.
Once again great work guys! Interesting to see the new ranger be tested and to be honest was quite surprised how poorly it preformed off-road. Since they have taken on board customer feedback I would of thought they would lean more into the offroad capabilities! I drive a 1991 triple locked 80 series, my pick for the ute of the year would have to be the humble hilux, as you showed in these tests its not top of the table across the board but overall ticks the boxes! I was leaning towards the ranger but that front end is disgusting! Cheers lads!
I think I made the right decision. Now I am owning a Triton. It really fits me. I'm in love with its aggressive look. Of course, the price and you get sort of things.
@@4WD247 shouldve found an LDV model with a locker. They're only 44k, considerably cheaper than the competition. Cant compare locker to no locker. Very similar to comparing a cheap 2wd to expensive 4wd, maybe a 2wd Triton to a raptor ranger?
Thanks Zac for offering your T60 up for the video. It's a shame though that a more suited level of T60 wasn't used. If it wasn't for your offer, I doubt the T60 would ever be used on these comparison videos. I have the 2019 Trailrider, came standard with the rear diff lock and both hill start and hill descent control. 2inch lift with 265/70/17 Yoko geolander a/t's and handles offroad and sand whilst towing offroad camper. All with original 2.8l 130kw, turbo diesel motor. Love it.
Have a 15 year old Lancer with 300k that's only done a control arm, and a 12 year old Outlander that's had 2 shocks replaced. Absolutely reliable and affordable cars. So when it came to getting a dual cab...we pick up our GSR Tomorrow 🤣🤣🤣
A Bendix upgrade for my 10/18 N80 SR5 Hilux would be awesome. Since it’s GVM upgrade and loaded up with ARB accessories. She don’t stop too good. Plus. The Hilux should win this competition. Considering it did all your tests and did them well on road tyres.
Definitely the Triton. I bought an dual cab V6 petrol older model some years ago. Replaced the shockies put on extractors. It was a beast in the soft sand. Even snatching 2x brand new Landcruiser that were bogged.
I drive a 18’ Ranger, personally for my needs the ranger is best and it’s good to see ford pushing the competition again. I think the triton is a tough second but meets different needs.
I went with an MR triton. 40mm fulcrum lift and and Yoki AT's get us everywhere we need it too. It tows the jayco swan outback like a treat and even with an 1800mm alloy canopy it handles just fine. Brakes aren't great though so might look at the bendix upgrade.
I've got a ranger PX2, would definitely benefit from a brake upgrade. The fronts are ok enough but I've had to replace the rears mostly due to mud. The handbrake as a result fails quite easily. Go the Ranger too! Ford boy from way back
I’ve just put an order on a new Mitsubishi triton Club cab/ space cab for all the reasons that you guys rated it for. Excellent Value for money, reliability, and respectable overall performance. I’ll be setting it up as both a tradie work vehicle and a camping vehicle. Being a club cab I don’t think the rear axle will be as much of an issue once I put a lightweight 3/4 canopy on it. The other vehicles were great too however budget plays a big factor and leaves me with more money for modifications and tools for work 👍🏻
The Ranger has all the new tech but yet to be proven for reliability. Just recently received my new SR5 Hilux and couldn't be happier. This vehicle maybe dated but has proven reliability, dealers across the country. and plenty of aftermarket accessories. Great honest review and good to see stock vehicles being tested as I drive mine stock at present. Cheers!
I agree 👍 Also, toyota dealers are so easy to deal with my 200 blew engine at 70000 and they replaced it no questions asked. It blew it again on 145300 and dealer charged it again with out drams.
I drive a 2014 Ford Ranger and would love to upgrade the drum brakes. I would still take the new Ranger for the tech and the safety for the kids in the back. I would also like to see a full test that includes a Jeep, a full look of what's out there. Keep up the good work guys and keep testing at this level, it was great.
Shaun, I’d pick the ranger, get lift from factory and reset the settings needed. My question to you is, If you could create your own 4wd, what body, chassis, engine, gearbox, diffs and type of suspension, what would you choose from all makes new or old?
The new gen ranger runs rings over the competition at the moment. Ford have raised the bar and put the rest on notice. Exciting times to see the competition rise to or exceed the new benchmark that has been set. Time to trade the 2017 ranger in for a new one I think
Do it!!! I’ve ordered the V6 Ranger Sport with the touring pack. Currently I tow my 2.5T caravan with a 2019 Holden Colorado (147kw/500Nm). Due at the end of October 🤞 If you have an ABN you qualify for a $2.6k Ford blue fleet discount 👍
Really great test! I would love to see some older duel cab utes from 2006-2010 for a lower budget test. You could test: N70 Hilux PK/PJ Ranger/ UN Bt50 D40 Navara L200 Triton RC Dmax/Rodeo That could be really interesting for people with a lower budget for a 4wd.
The indestructible 17 Mq tritons my daily and weekend toy. Nothings frightened the triton in it’s 6 years on road as of yet and I think the triton should win Ute of the year it’s been top 3 per your guys testing every year with proven reliability! Love your work boys 🍻
Hi guys, I have a 2010 pajero with only 3 working calipers so it takes a bit to stop. I reckon the triton deserves a win, always been the underdog, and can easily keep up with the more expensive cars
Great video! I love the UTE of the year videos! I drive a 2016 2.2 Ranger (6MT) 4x4. So far the promising options look like the Triton and Ranger! I really hope the Ranger can do better and it's fantastic to hear that Ford has actually started listening to their customer feedback! I have always been a lover of Mitsubishi (huge Pajero & Triton fan) and have always thought of them as the most capable out of the factory due to their exceptional build quality and fitting various coolers straight out of the factory. Everyone knows - the killer of a vehicle is heat & Mitsubishi has always been one step ahead in this regard. Can't wait for the next video! Lets see who wins!
I've got a MQ triton which shares some DNA with the MR triton. I think another category that should have been added was warranty. Considering the price point of the Triton and it's 10 Year warranty, I think that would be a massive factor for new ute owners today when deciding on making a new vehicle purchase. I think it wouldn't change which ute would win but it would probably shuffle around the Triton from 4th. Great video, would love to see Nissan in next year.
I reckon the Triton should be ute of the year as Mitsubishi always manage to do a good job Also with the testing of the utes you should do a different challenge between manual and auto for each vehicle
Personally, I would upgrade to the new V6 XLT. I am currently on my 2nd ranger after owning a string of Patrols. My current Ranger was from the last production run of the 3.2L. As mentioned in this test, any short comings in the Ranger's rollover angle can be easily addressed with a suspension upgrade (same as the outgoing models) and a snorkel would be another immediate modification. If there was solution that could be done to help look after the alternator then I don't think you'd have many issues using the Ford... I have over 10+ years playing in the retail car game and as such I am more than familiar with each of these vehicles aside from the new model T60 and Ranger which have been released since leaving the industry.. However, I am a bit confused about what was said in reference to the Ranger's V6. As was mentioned, this powerplant has been used in the F-trucks reliably but in the wrap up Shauno said he wouldn't put his hard earned coin down on a new Ranger as longevity is a concern??? Wouldn't being used in a much larger vehicle ease any concerns about longevity and reliability, Shauno?? I would be more worried about these small 2L diesels such as the Ranger,s and LDV,s 4 cyl. (I did work for VW for awhile) Not being critical as my reasons for getting the old model over the new one was all new vehicles have some teething issues and recalls, etc...as history has dictated for every new release vehicle since they invented motor cars... Fair comparison test by the team. Credit for featuring the LDV as they are gaining a lot of popularity due to their price point and as such continue to get peoples attention. I enjoyed watching this comparison. Thanks guys... Cheers, Drummo
Theres has already been a large amount of issues from the V6 Rangers, especially drive train problems like the popular tail shaft issues, as well as gearbox issues which is the same gearbox used in the F150’s. Ive been heavily looking into them or a Hilux, and seen alot of issues with the Rangers. If they didnt have issues i would be strongly considering buying one
@@Tact1calP0tat0 The tailshaft issue only affected a small amount of vehicles (a few hundred) it was dealt with quickly by Ford, they replaced the faulty parts instead of retrofitting a mod which was good of them, any new model is going to have teething problems, Hilux has had plenty along the way, I personally wouldn't buy the first of any new vehicle, and rather wait for a year or two so they can iron out the invitable bugs.
I drive a 2014 MN manual Triton. Love the look of the new Ranger and no doubt it drives amazingly however for value for money and getting such a reliable car I think the new Triton should get ute of the year. Such an underrated car
It got 2020 of the year. Great car yes but its got its limitations as they all do. For all round ute in my opinion in terms of value for money included I'd go with the Dmax. That's my opinion though
Great video, Hilux for me. Value, reliability, resale value, after market parts and mods, the biggest dealer network in Australia for access if something goes wrong on a big trip, the fact it shares an engine and gear box with the Prado & Fortuner, not mention a stack of other changeable parts means even more available parts all around Australia
Super relevant points. A big reason I stick with an older Hilux is the easy availability of parts and mechanics who know the truck. As was mentioned, the D-Max keeps changing parts and that's an absolute no-no for me, as it forces you back to the dealer every time (and there's only one Isuzu dealer near me). If buying new then re-sale value is an issue, and here in Malaysia that means the Ford drops drastically, and the Hilux scores big. As the Mazda is a rebadged D-Max they both drop to 3rd place for me, so it's Ranger if money no issue but really the Hilux is the smarter choice, especially as we don't know the Ranger long-term, and we do know Ford don't give a rat's ass about their customers. For me, I'll stick with my old Hilux Vigo, so I can go off-road and not worry too much, and there's no electronic crap to break (I fitted my own 360 cam)
Loved watching this... I bought a 2015 hilux brand new and took her out the first weekend and learnt how to do a few river crossings. I found myself here as I’m about to start doing her up for more rugged 4WD... I need to learn a lot! So thanks gents. I’m glad the hilux came in up near the top, I finally went with the hilux because I figured when I finally get out around the country on my own and have any problems, replacement parts should be pretty easy to find! Probably a hilux somewhere on every property! 😏 I hope!
Hey guys! I drive a PK ranger, I’m a Mitsubishi tech and think they’re very underrated. Lots of people throw shade at them but they’re such reliable 4wd’s! 🤘🏼
While I personally like the look and styling of the Ranger myself I wouldn't have had it top of the table, simply cos its 30% / 20 grand more than some of the decent midrange offerings like the Triton and that's not to be sniffed at, its a HUGE amount, I personally own an older ML Triton/ B40 L200 and cant fault it for a "bang for buck ute" in saying that, I'm not in Oz so I wont be driving 2000k's to "dingo piss creek" 98% of my driving here in Scotland is done on Tarmac with the occasional rutted farmers track/field thrown in a couple of times a month when I go shooting.
Good stuff lads, loved the video. The ute comparison videos have to be my favourite. The only thing I think was missing, which you've done in previous years is cabin comfort, and ease of use with the technology. I know it's not related to the 4wd aspect of the utes but I wish you'd put it in at the end as bonus content which doesn't go towards the overall score. I feel it just gives a more comprehensive review of the utes and most people use their utes as both a 4wd and daily driver, so it would be nice to know. Great stuff though, keep it up.
Mitsubishi Triton hasn't changed for years now and it still competes very well with these new cars. I bought one in 2021 and it has never given me problems. I literally drive off road almost everyday. I'd buy this car over and over again
Pretty much with you on this one Shauno, Hilux, BT and Dmax would be great all round tourers that can handle some the harder stuff, proven reliability and a good suite of aftermarket accessories available. Let the Grey Nomads test the reliability of these Range V6s' they did that with the Grand Cherokee V6 back in the day, on paper 👌 but over time and worked hard, absolute lemon.
It's funny that people still have no idea how much the V6 Diesel has already proven itself, it's a powerstroke diesel. Look up what runs the F trucks..
@@railabuser that's even more worrying, ford made two of THE worst diesel engines ever made the 6.0 power stroke and the 6.4 power stroke. The current 6.7 in the f trucks is a kind of good engine but is an absolute nightmare to work on and requires a cab removal to do relatively basic stuff like injectors ect ect. I definitely don't trust ford to make a good engine especially when they completely revamp the design every year. That being said the power figures are impressive and I would like to be proven wrong about this version!
@@spwwps9636 Don't forget before the 6.0 and 6.4, there was the 7.3 Powerstroke which was a bullet proof engine. The 3.0 V6 is an F150 engine and it was quite solid so at least its already proven in that regards but I guess time will tell how they prove in the aussie heat
I wonder if you would have still picked the ranger if you had the 4 cylinder one? Based on the commentary it won based on the power and offroad ability attributed mainly to the V6 diesel. Should have used a 4 cylinder one for an even and fair comparison in my opinion.
I have a Ranger Wildtrak and the scraping is just from the bash plates that come standard and will be fine.We got a suspension upgrade and have no problems with bottoming out
2015 px1 Ranger - 200 hp 580nm dyno tune - 35’s.. towing a 2.5t work trailer so I need that Bendix stopping power!! Ranger to win car of the year - has its moments but it’s in a class of its own 🤘🏽
I drive a 105 series cruiser but if I was going to get a dual cab ute it’ll definitely be a mid level hilux for the overall reliability, price and power you get from standard. Love these comparison Videos would be keen to see some suv ones aswell
That was a great video guys. Really enjoyed it. I drive a 2016 Hilux and so fare have a Torqit performance chip and 3 " ss exhaust system along with a EVC throttle controller. It runs and tows really well. Thinking about a lift kit and brakes next. Happy new year all 🎈
I really hope Mitsubishi gets some more power out of their new Triton thats launching soon, I feel the performance has fallen behind a bit compared to the other manufacturers. Otherwise still a big fan of the looks and value, have a MQ and off-road it doesn't hold back. Come to think of it this is a 4wd channel and it did amazingly well in the off-road test so thats good enough for me.
The best review of anything motoring on planet Earth! I hope this annual review never dies! I waited for a full year but it was 100% worth it! Keep up the excellent work! 👍🏾
I drive an 08 lux and love it to bits but I’m looking at buying a new ute soon. This video has saved lots of time in research, love your work fellas. I’m thinking the D-Max and the Hilux are the ones to go with. They are both well know for their reliability. They don’t have the price tag of the Ranger! Both easy on the eyes! And most importantly, great off-road vehicles that can be done up for touring 💪
So I own a 2022 LDV T60 max pro luxe [bloody mouthful] It has a rear locking diff. You can’t choose it though, it’s automatic and it works a treat!! Wonder if you’d try one of those models against the others?
Absolutely, I have the 2019 Trailrider, comes standard with the rear diff lock and both hill start and hill descent control. 2inch lift with 265/70/17 Yoko geolander a/t's and handles offroad and sand whilst towing offroad camper. All with original 2.8l 130kw, turbo diesel motor. Love
yep.. worst performer, cant get lockers and other performance kits, worst engine, can't tow... but worst of all... made in China so it will last about a year ... sure did well all right.
Great test boys, love the comprehensive review, top stuff. I drive a Rav4 Edge and go camping and off bitumen alot. Because I'm Toyota born and bred, it has to be the Hilux for me, for proven reliability and value. I'd love a new set of brakes! Good luck everyone
I would have liked to see the GWM pickup as well on this test. I guess the LDV wasn't really a contender until someone brought along his own car. The Chinese vehicles are becoming popular; especially with their pricing and some are pretty good. Would be good to see them doing some tracks.

Well done on the test. I drive a Isuzu damx and of late found out the issues that aren't talked about. The front guard cracking , the the front body mounts collapsing and most of all the issue with the rear difff wearing out. I love the Dmax but have come to question the manufacturers lack of respect for owners. If they have fixed the issues in the new Dmax I hope it gets the points.
I drive a MR Triton GLS premium. Picked it up for $40,000 with only 2,500km on the clock (demo pre covid) loaded with all the bells and whistles. Use it to tow for work and throw my Mountain Bike and Surfboard in the back on weekends, to get me where I need to go. Can't beat that for value.
Would have been good to see a T60Max “Luxe” model tested on here. They come factory with a Rear Diff Lock. I have one myself and can’t fault it so far. 👌🏼 Love the video though. Cheers boys! 🍻
Absolutely, my 2019 trailrider came standard with rear diff lock and hill descent and hill start. No faults and goes where all the other utes, (same class) go.
Hi guys great test as always, I’m in agreement with most others that the Triton would be the way to go as ute of the year. With a very capable base platform for upgrades due to savings over the other vehicles shown. I own a NS Pajero and I’m astounded with its performance and reliability so I’m sure with Mitsubishi’s Dakar winning R&D in the past it would be a good long term investment
Yeah we would have loved to have one! When Nissan said no - we even tried to get a punter's one but it just didn't work out unfortunately - we will try again next time! Do you own a Navara? What are your thoughts?
@@4WD247 Yeah that’s unfortunate and slack from Nissan. Yeah I bought one late last year, overall super happy with it, has a lot of low down torque & has been solid off-road, haven’t had any issue with it so far ( touch wood ) Not 4wding related but It’s only negatives I have against it,is the interior which is outdated considering the price compared to some of its competitors.
I've waited for a year for my DMAX to arrive, consolation was that it arrive as a 2022 model. 2 weeks prior to the arrival of my DMAX, I went for a test drive and loved it!

I’d go with the hilux.
Reasoning for that. It’s a Toyota.
Triton for the price point and overall performance, plus $$ at the servo
2008 TRD Hilux. The Hilux should win not only for the stock setup but also for the ability and ease of aftermarket modification.
I was going to choose the ranger but seeing where the airbox and alternator sit is a changing my decision to the Triton. For the power and performance of a more affordable dual cab, and it has performed really well on this segment each year which shows its weight in gold.
In the video you said you had a brake upgrade to give away
Plus the 10yr warranty 🤯
Yup. Price, maintenance and durability on mind nothing wrong with Mitsubishi.
I also got a 2020 model after watching their video. I would buy it again.
The L200 (aka Triton) is so common in Europe and Africa, and is largely regarded as the Hilux alternative. The Eastern Europeans and Russians love them, they tend to do better in colder weather because they are prone to overheating in really tough ground.
Good ute, especially for the money and versatility

Cheers
Only thing with the triton is that they look terrible..
People are using 4k less because it makes the picture quality worse for the majority of people who watch YT in 720p.
I wonder why they're saying the triton isn't built for mods and travelling. I've seen tritons everywhere and ARB have all the mods needed
Goes to show how shit the triton is if you need to spend all that money getting it Half decent.

If only the Ford Bronco was here, watch out Jeep!

💯 percent mate, same reason i bought one too. However where the hilux in the video I haven't seen yet
You must have watched a different video. Jeep or Amarok weren’t featured in this test.
Yes agree...I can get parts here in NZ & mechanics know the engine
Yeap our workshop definitely fixes them, fixes them at such a rate we stock more Hilux injectors than all the other utes put together and then some ;)
And services cost very little, zero problems in 30000km of all terrain driving
I think the triton is probably the best out off them, more budget friendly reliable and plenty off afternarket support plus its a Mitsubishi can't beat them 💪 and I drive a 1996 Mitsubishi pajero would love a brake upgrade kit the old girl is up for new brakes soon 😀

Ps.
Hey mate don’t listen to the haters, someone will always complain about any car you drive
I've had those same comments but when i drive around them when they're stuck they soon shut up
2021 Navara SL - I’d have to go with the mighty triton for the dub, most bang for buck in my opinion, pretty solid all rounder 🤙🏻

Buying a new one would be a hard choice, lots of great options. But for me it would probably end up being the Toyota. Love the practical details like the alternator placement and serviceability on it!
Thanks for having me a long guys. The T60 did its best, and did it significantly cheaper💪
Sure did! It was great to have it and you along mate. LDV went up a level in our books - enjoy it mate
@@4WD247 shouldve found an LDV model with a locker. They're only 44k, considerably cheaper than the competition. Cant compare locker to no locker.
Very similar to comparing a cheap 2wd to expensive 4wd,
maybe a 2wd Triton to a raptor ranger?
Thanks Zac for offering your T60 up for the video. It's a shame though that a more suited level of T60 wasn't used. If it wasn't for your offer, I doubt the T60 would ever be used on these comparison videos. I have the 2019 Trailrider, came standard with the rear diff lock and both hill start and hill descent control. 2inch lift with 265/70/17 Yoko geolander a/t's and handles offroad and sand whilst towing offroad camper. All with original 2.8l 130kw, turbo diesel motor. Love it.
Its a shit heap pal
20k over priced
I really don’t get the Triton hate. Very capable, affordable, and looks good. Coming from a Hilux owner
Agree! Still has a bad name but these new Tritons have been brilliant. Highly rated from us!
Not as hated as it seems I’d say. They sell plenty and most owners have no complaints.
3rd top seller behind Ranger and Hilux at times for the MQ.
I went a hilux but second choice would of been triton, best bang for buck tbh
Ford boy from way back
Love to hear old Shauno claim spending 70k on the ranger can't be justified whilst recently spending easily $200k on making a 200 series ute!
Except he wouldn't have paid for it. Sponsorships and shit
Or the amount spent on the 30 aswel
Due at the end of October 🤞
If you have an ABN you qualify for a $2.6k Ford blue fleet discount 👍
@@RocketRod63 I have mine setup the way I want it with a canopy etc I might upgrade in a few years
Really great test! I would love to see some older duel cab utes from 2006-2010 for a lower budget test.
You could test:
N70 Hilux
PK/PJ Ranger/ UN Bt50
D40 Navara
L200 Triton
RC Dmax/Rodeo
That could be really interesting for people with a lower budget for a 4wd.
Good thing you no longer drive it on public roads. Anyway.....
I reckon the Triton should be ute of the year as Mitsubishi always manage to do a good job
Also with the testing of the utes you should do a different challenge between manual and auto for each vehicle
(I did work for VW for awhile)
Not being critical as my reasons for getting the old model over the new one was all new vehicles have some teething issues and recalls, etc...as history has dictated for every new release vehicle since they invented motor cars...
Just a personal preference but it’d be the Hilux or Dmax for me as they ticked all the boxes and priced at mid range. Good episode guys 👍
They ticked all the boxes because they were the top spec though? ie 70k same as the ranger
@@nugget3030 Watch from 45.20 or so.
There is a fair difference between the Isuzu and Ranger in the unladen ride.
I drive a 2014 MN manual Triton. Love the look of the new Ranger and no doubt it drives amazingly however for value for money and getting such a reliable car I think the new Triton should get ute of the year. Such an underrated car
Agreed
Love the 4wd testing series but would we be able to see one for all us blokes that drive utes older than 2000, love the vids, keep up the great work
While I personally like the look and styling of the Ranger myself I wouldn't have had it top of the table, simply cos its 30% / 20 grand more than some of the decent midrange offerings like the Triton and that's not to be sniffed at, its a HUGE amount, I personally own an older ML Triton/ B40 L200 and cant fault it for a "bang for buck ute" in saying that, I'm not in Oz so I wont be driving 2000k's to "dingo piss creek" 98% of my driving here in Scotland is done on Tarmac with the occasional rutted farmers track/field thrown in a couple of times a month when I go shooting.
2000 k's to dingo piss creek 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I drive a 79, could really do with the brake upgrade. I'm a huge fan of the triton's. Good price and all rounder.
You’ve ranked them spot on. The discs were a major influence for my snow-hauling Ranger. Would love the Bendix upgrade on her.
eh, no Amarok, no Nissan, no SsangYong (SY AFAIK is the only one that has the option of both a twincab & a full length tray) & only one Chinese Ute
I also think the 10 year warranty the triton comes with is something to consider also in value for money
So I own a 2022 LDV T60 max pro luxe [bloody mouthful]
It has a rear locking diff.
Love
Honestly, I think the LDV did well considering the price of the thing - did well in my opinion.
It was atrocious they didn't even take it up half the tracks
No it didn’t, and they are the most unreliable trust me I’m inside knowledge 😂
Triton doesn’t cost that much more and better in every way
yep.. worst performer, cant get lockers and other performance kits, worst engine, can't tow... but worst of all... made in China so it will last about a year ... sure did well all right.
The model with the locker is only 44k. Cant believe they didnt mention that or use one in the video.
5 year warranty? What's unreliable about that..
Triton every day of the week should win. Best value for money and they work so well. I have a 105 cruiser and would love a brake upgrade. Thanks guys
Love
Not sure why no gwm. Are they afraid of it,? Mmm
Check out the recent AutoExpert TH-cam channel video on Isuzu Ute customer support...
Why I went the hilux this time round... especially when selling people tend to look for hilux over everything else second hand.
I’ve got a 76 series land cruiser. I like the triton it’s an under dog and I’ve seen them go everywhere
Canadian FJ Cruiser Owner here... Love the content guys! Absolutely epic stuff! Although we do not have D-Max's here, i think it would be a huge hit!
Would have been good to see a T60Max “Luxe” model tested on here. They come factory with a Rear Diff Lock. I have one myself and can’t fault it so far. 👌🏼
Love the video though. Cheers boys! 🍻
I have a 2021 t60 pro goes mint
Yeah it’s a shame, especially when they’ve put it up against such expensive utes. Might have gained it quite a few points. $38k vs $70+ is a big ask
If they put the trailrider in there it would have been are good comparison to the other
Absolutely, my 2019 trailrider came standard with rear diff lock and hill descent and hill start.
Agreed. It's cheaper than the rest and is very inexpensive to run and maintain one.
Would’ve been good to see the NAV again, Rate them highly off-road!
Great video as always tho 👍🏼
Yeah we would have loved to have one! When Nissan said no - we even tried to get a punter's one but it just didn't work out unfortunately - we will try again next time! Do you own a Navara? What are your thoughts?
@@4WD247 take our nav 👌 they are a good thing
@@4WD247 Yeah that’s unfortunate and slack from Nissan.
Yeah I bought one late last year, overall super happy with it, has a lot of low down torque & has been solid off-road, haven’t had any issue with it so far ( touch wood )
Not 4wding related but It’s only negatives I have against it,is the interior which is outdated considering the price compared to some of its competitors.
I've waited for a year for my DMAX to arrive, consolation was that it arrive as a 2022 model. 2 weeks prior to the arrival of my DMAX, I went for a test drive and loved it!
