Go the Nav, great looking ute for it’s age even before the new face lift. Have a 2016 STX and have accumulated 235,000km so far on mine with a tune making 200hp, lifted on 35’s. Mix of wheeling every month and towing a 17ft Jayco. The tune really wakes up the motor and throttle response without requiring a throttle controller. In the time of ownership (from new) I have only had 2 rear main seal replacements and the infamous leaky hot pipe and intercooler pipes that required replacing. I pick up my cannon xsr next week. My first 4wd ute and will be upgrading alot of things on it so it will be a better ride. I think once some companies figure out a tune for them they will open up a little bit more potential in them and make up for the initial laggy throttle input. But coming from a old commodore i think i will be quite pleased with it and wont be regretting the outlay that it would take for a similar spec ranger or hilux.

Love the video guys! I work for Hervey Bay 4x4 connected with a ssangyong dealership. One thing I’ve noticed is that the ssangyong musso is really coming into play as a great towing and off-road vehicle. With 3.5t towing capacity. Can get them in a SWB coil sprung or a LWB coil or leaf sprung. With accessories like bullbars suspension available. I’d love to see next years video with ssangyong musso included. Thanks again boys!
The comment made a few times in this presentation "good for 10 years ownership" was my guide to selecting a new ute, I studied the market closely for three years and just recently bought a new BT50 , no regrets whatsoever, really getting to know and appreciate it. Much quicker and smoother than I was expecting, I'm banking on ten or more years use in the country. Been driving 51 years now and hand on heart the BT50 is the most fuel efficient car I have ever owned and is brilliant for distance drives, effortless feel at cruise etc. Will be investing near two grand for the aftermarket steering knuckle kit that alters the geometry and removes the bump steer problem, apart from saving tyres I'm told the front end will sit more stable on the road. Thanks for the test, I really enjoyed watching.
Bought a new one 2 years ago, brilliant ute at any price point. I'd recommend the GLX PLUS, as it's got the screen, rear diff lock, alloys and its pretty comfortable, only thing I'd recommend is getting a throttle control due to theag down low
Yes, the GWM is initially laggie but those power outputs aren't hideous niether, there's more on tap here than your hilux had Jocko, but everyone towed with them and loved em. Value for what you get, the GWM has to win hands down once you consider if you placed some aftermarket suspension on it the price is still far cheaper than anything else in the line up. I'd certainly go with one if in the market, but I'm not. Sticking with the Patrol wagon.
@@perpelle What do you drive now? Probably has something made in China, and the PC or Phone you wrote this comment on will definitly have something if not all made in China.
I picked up a base model Cannon very recently, and im glad i did. I couldn't afford a more expensive ute, and I gotta say, value for money wise, you can't beat it. From a mechanics standpoint, it also looks super easy to work on. Yes, it's a bit sluggish and laggy on the throttle, but I think a throttle controller would make a night and day difference to this vehicle. As for the suspension, one thing to note is that the XSR has the same suspension as the base model but with all the added weight of steel bumpers and roll bars, i test drove an XSR and i gotta say, the base rides a lot better being lighter. That being said, most people are probably going to upgrade the suspension anyway no matter what they get.
@@grego4835yes a throttle controller is a waste of time and money. I’ve been saying that for years. My vehicle has built in throttle response control in the form of Terrain Response.

I expected much more for ranger and amarok. The 4A mode is underrated. Test towing 3,5 to in rain. 4A will get you much more grip than 2H. And the bigger AT Tires on wildtrak X with Bilstein dampers, I expected best in class comfort offroad
Hi, After reading a lot of the comments, I too struggle to understand some of the scoring versus the points you have mentioned as both pros and cons. I believe that personal preferences got in the way of a what should be an unbiased review e.g adblue really, a tank lasts how many 000klms! And a new turbo position and controller on the Dmax is more reliable - what historic data do you have- plus if the engine was so reliable before - why did they move it. The reply comment on the V6 engine is disappointing given the crank has been revised, totally different outlook to the Dmax situation Only my view
I've had the Cannon xsr for almost 5 months now (AKA P-Series limited in south Africa) and my only complaints are that it is a bit under powered when fully loaded and the suspension is a bit bouncy at times. Other than that its been an absolute dream! I've done quite a few tough tracks around here as well as some tough off-road game drives with zero issues. For me, the fact that it comes from the factory twin locked with a snorkel, good all terrain tyres, bash plates, built in 220V inverter with outlets in the cabin and the engine bay and a winch too in South Africa was a deal breaker. I'll have to see in years to come how the reliability holds up
@@andrevdmerwe3107ive checked out both, being 6 foot tall i couldnt fit in rear seats in the triton.... dont own a cannon but its a great looking ute plus twin locked standard, just lacking power, they have a v6 version in china apparently coming to oz
I have the LS, with a Stage 1+ and that has solved ALL the power issues and throttle lag. Next I am looking at getting an EFS setup to stop the bouncing... so far I am VERY happy with the GWM
@@andrevdmerwe3107 I went with the GWM over all the other brands mostly because of affordability and the bang for your buck factor. All the aftermarket accessories I would have installed on the other Utes already came as standard on the Ltd/ XSR edition. (mainly: snorkel, winch and tyres)
I'd enjoy watching the Team testing a Cybertruck. Not because I believe it would do great or under perform in some tough tracks, but I'm curious about the Stainless steel panels would handle impacts. Bent panels are one of my first concerns going to a trail.
@@BogDustForBreakfast It's not the hyped exoskeleton Tesla promoted, but a standard unibody construction with bolt on Stainless steel. And due to that, would be interesting if other Automakers would consider, bolt on Stainless steel panels for special edition off-roaders.
The first cyber trucks that make it to Australia will be way over a million dollars secondary market and instantly parked in showrooms. It will be a long, long time before we see them on a 4x4 track here.
@@gpaje My curiosity is around the body panels durability in the trails. And a possible application towards other off-roards, as some aftermarket Stainless steel body panels. As an off-roader, the Cybertruck due to massive weight, long wheel base, range, as repairability, It could be a terrible recipe to take it to some remote tracks.
Mr Colin C. Wow, a face from the past. He did the suspension on my MQ patrol about 34 years ago. Nice to see him still getting his hands dirty with EFS.
I absolutely love how you guys test these vehicles, you guys are by far the best vehicle testers and you actually TEST them and make them struggle which is what we all want to see
Always going to be the hilux. Brought mine brand new, EFS 2 inch lift tub replaced with a tray & canopy, recurve engine tune on the fly. Tow the van briliantly, 6 speed manual and sits in 5th all day long towing the van. Love it.
Also got to love how Jocko as soon as he got the slightest wheel spin in the ranger was like nope better lock the diff in and everyone else just spun through it ....... has Jessie taught you nothing 😂😂😂😂
Thought that was a little weird and unfair lol. Should have gone again and seen how TRC took it up cause I'm pretty sure it would have done it effortlessly lol
Yes, notice how the girl kept going without the locker (to prove the Hilux didn't need it). Now they can say the Hilux is better... meanwhile Jocko didn't even try
They didn't give credit to the Nav in many areas. It has a dedicated Towing mode to cater for the gearing and engine revs. It has a 5-point linkage suspension system with a heavy duty thick swaybar in the rear. With the 2 mode springs in the rear it rides comfortably and tows great when loaded. I use one for towing and wheeling. I love it.
Its a shity deal that the nav they tested isn't even a "full" production product it's an aftermarket option done by Premcar an Australian company sperate from Nissan.
Would have been interesting to swap the ranger for the V6 version, and the amarok for the petrol version. I think having a high ish performance petrol engine may have confused these diesel guys a bit haha.
Can't pretend to be surprised that Jocko would get the Hilux. He loves the almost complete lack of changes over the many years. The I in Toyota stands for Innovation... Me, I'm actually quite interested in the Amarok v6. looks very cool!
I have had adblue for a couple of years now and I don’t think it’s a big problem, 1 tank last for ever and even when the tank is empty you can still drive for another 3 or 4000 km before it won’t start because of adblue.
I'd sake they'd be comparing like-for-like models. The BT-50 on test is probqbly top level spec compared to a mid range Dmax. When I looked at both last year there was only a couple of thousand difference in the mid range spec (favouring the BT).
As a proud Navi owner, I can confidently attest to the exceptional performance and reliability that this vehicle brings to every driving experience. Whether conquering rugged terrains or cruising through city streets, the Navi consistently exceeds expectations, showcasing its prowess and adaptability. This remarkable vehicle has truly proven itself as an unwavering companion for those who seek an unparalleled driving experience across various landscapes.
glad you guys finally got to test the cannon. great to see it did so well! had mine for 2 years now and its been great. ill continue to buy and recommend gwm
Something to point out with the Ranger and Amerock diffs with that that cover if you do snap a rear CV do you have the ability to pop off that back cover and push it out through there provided you’re able to access everything else without special machinery
Don't right off adblue. It becomes available in containers with filling nozzles and every fuel station and supermarket sells it over in the UK. I guess that will be the same over there.
Another great comparison! I have a Navara and I've been really happy with it but so far in 145000 ks its done 2 rear mains, lost count of replacement intercooler pipes, multiple turbo lines and has now developed a mystery squeal at high revs. Lucky they are a good looking ute! For me I wouldn't buy any of the current on offer dual cabs and wait for 2025 as it looks like there will be some significant updates to the market. Would love to see the Tacoma make its way to Oz or at very least give the next gen Hilux some of the same styling.
I also have a 2022 Navara and I fell in love with the looks of it. Here in South Africa, the new Navaras come with an upgraded version of the old 2.5 liter single turbo diesel engine that was used in the older generation Navaras - we don't get the 2.3 twin turbo. But it also makes 140kw and 450nm. I don't why, but according to some of the guys at the dealership I spoke to, they are of the opinion that the older engine is perceived to be more reliable (don't know whether that is true or not), so the South African guys are more inclined to buy one. Their strategy seems to have worked, because the new D23 is selling a lot better than the previous D23 that we had with the twin turbo engine.
the 2.3L unit is Renault sourced .....say no more, Renault has had a detrimental impact to some of Nissan's products. Thankfully not the Patrol. 2,5L engine is a Nissan design and robust but ignore the stupid long oil change intervals or you will stretch your timing chain.
I have a 2016 np300 with 243km has done hot pipe that's it. It been great on fuel and this engine has had many high k reports of reliability from Europe. My cousin has a 2018 hilux and has nothing but problems with it. Go figure
Yeah its definitely luck of the draw I think. I had a 2008 Hilux back in the day and at around 110000ks it decided to spit all the bearings out of the balance shafts. After that it just had non stop problems. @@bears2604
I would not worry about the AdBlue. You only fill it once or twice a year. Every 15k-20k km. I don’t know how well it works with your performance upgrades though.
Bought a wildtrak a few months ago, been very happy with it. Was a close one between the ranger and the hilux but wasn't completely sold by it's infotainment system. But without a doubt it's the vehicle of choice for reliability : )
I love that Nissan has no affiliation with your channel, those knees must be sore after having VW in your mouth 😂😂😂 20 21 22 23 24 always rubbishing the Nav.
As I suspected, GWM is the best off-roader. I did find some of the guys were trying hard to put it down. Overall it seems to be the car of the year. But yeah the only thing stopping it from being at the top is that we do not know if it will be reliable
nice show guys... i own a VW 4x4 (Mk 1 Touareg V6) it's now 18 years old... and the rear upper tailgate glass is a bit dodgy... Thats it... its got hi/low- with FCR diff-locks... I've owned a Toyota, Range Rover, Land Rover and a Volvo XC90... Here in the UK, all Land Rover products are really poor by comparison... We got the Wildtrak X. Really good drive, lane assist correction and auto start/stop is a bit to get used to. We've had ours for about a week and about to drive it from VIC to QLD in another week.
I disabled auto start/stop, found it to be annoying. Does yours have a weird thing where the interior ambient light doesn't always turn on when driving at night?
@@tedeganagondinot sure, but I’m hoping it could be fixed by a software update. Not too bothered by it as it only seems to happen once a week or so with mine - so just a minor bug to deal with for now 😁
I don’t see how the BT50 which is the most expensive but did nothing particularly well got high marks for value for money Surely it should’ve lost a point especially when you can get the DMAX for less
I couldn’t believe it was eighty grand! Our GWM Cannon X (the top of the line at that stage) cost us under half that a year ago. Is it “half the car” of the others? No way.
Hi Guys - Great comparison overall but not sure why you would put the 3.0 V6 Amarok in and not the equivalent Ranger? Seems a miss match? For the rest you have used their top models...
Thing is that they didn’t even use the 4wd amarok variant which would be the pan-Americana which would be the equivalent of the rouge and warrior x I reckon a miss match across the board
Great video guys. Just like to point out that people very rarely will keep there car/ute/4wd for 500,000km these days. It's a bit outdated that saying.
I’m with Jock on this one. My 2014 Hilux is at 189k km. I have had it since new and I have never had an issue with it. I maintain it an it just goes and goes and goes. Excellent review by the way! 💪 I don’t think the VW will hold up in the long run. All my friends that have had VW have had costly repairs. They just don’t have the same quality and are expensive to repair.
I'm not locked into any brand, I just want what I feel is best for me at the time I'm buying it. I went from Hilux to Ranger, simply because the Ranger had a load more comfort, interior space, more power, and out of the showroom, it was far better than all the other utes I tried at the time, and I needed to do a lot of towing. However, the Hilux was a lot more reliable, and better at short distances, over the same amount of time, with very similar mods. So much so, I regret not keeping it as a second vehicle.
Getting the ford wildrak with the bi turbo instead of the v6 (which most people get) let the ranger down in a range of categories. It has the same engine as the one tested in the Amerok. For example they gave the Amerok an 8 for engine and a 6 for the bi turbo… the bi turbo 6 might be accurate, but nobody with any intentions of taking the ranger off road would be running the bi turbo model.
I'll go with the nav, my dad owns one for work going from provinces to provinces, it has been really tested. With good maintenance, it can stay with you for long.
Going for the D`Max. It has been serving really me well in off road, towing a boat and my 2 ton excavator. Its a solid car. It has lifted chassis, stronger shocks and armour plates.

Watching from Mozambique, Africa, I loved the comparison because we also use these models daily.
Thanks for the support - which one would you choose to own?
If i were to go buy a ute right now, i would go look up a triton. With the new model around the corner you could potentially get a ripper deal.
Despite the older interior, the Triton is really a solid bakkie.
The biggest problem is politics.
I would never ever buy a vehicle from a Chinese manufacturer and made in China.
@@perpelleyour going to struggle by much of anything with that ethos

Been a huge fan of the Show for years- I love your work but I’m pretty gutted you didn’t test a Mitsubishi Triton!
Especially having the super select
Just slam your foot to the floor every time you take off.
That is all a throttle controller does.
Value for Money and cheapest are two very different things. Cannon isn’t that great value for money but it’s certainly the cheapest here.
@@grego4835yes a throttle controller is a waste of time and money. I’ve been saying that for years. My vehicle has built in throttle response control in the form of Terrain Response.
@@jerrymyahzcat Its the best value for money out of the segment. Sounds like you just want to justify paying tens of thousands to have the "correct" badge on your car.
Amarok V6 with some mods, wheels, tyres, bullbar and a snorkel to start. Later on down the track suspension with a small lift. Perfection
I expected much more for ranger and amarok. The 4A mode is underrated. Test towing 3,5 to in rain. 4A will get you much more grip than 2H.
And the bigger AT Tires on wildtrak X with Bilstein dampers, I expected best in class comfort offroad
Great work as always gents 🤘 Would love to see a budget ute test too - Musso, LDV, base GWM, Mahindra Pik Up etc -
Totally agree. Some of these are brutally expensive but the budget ones are almost achievable
Like a race to the bottom of the ocean LOL
Chinese will be super unreliable
Hi, After reading a lot of the comments, I too struggle to understand some of the scoring versus
the points you have mentioned as both pros and cons.
I believe that personal preferences got in the way of a what should be an unbiased review e.g adblue really, a tank lasts how many 000klms! And a new turbo position and controller on the Dmax is more reliable - what historic data do you have- plus if the engine was so reliable before - why did they move it.
The reply comment on the V6 engine is disappointing given the crank has been revised, totally different outlook to the Dmax situation
Only my view
I'll have to see in years to come how the reliability holds up
For interest sake, why didn't you go for the Mitsubishi Triton?
@@andrevdmerwe3107ive checked out both, being 6 foot tall i couldnt fit in rear seats in the triton.... dont own a cannon but its a great looking ute plus twin locked standard, just lacking power, they have a v6 version in china apparently coming to oz
I have the LS, with a Stage 1+ and that has solved ALL the power issues and throttle lag. Next I am looking at getting an EFS setup to stop the bouncing... so far I am VERY happy with the GWM
I'll never buy a commie car.
The fact a 80lb bow shooting a arrow with a broad head bounces off it plus being bullet proof I’d say they are tough
It has a large stiff aluminum chassis with heavy body panels strapped to it, I don't know if I really want to take that off-roading.

As blue was introduced for buses and trucks 20 years ago. It’s available where ever trucks fill up.
Weve had it for many years in Europe. I refill adblue every 2000km. Should be enough for even the longest bush trip!
Great vid guys, Navara still for me tho. Interested to hear more on brake packages and rear main seal issues on them though
Yeah imma np300 man too, rear main seal hasnt been a issue for me just a hotpipe upgrade was and a cheap upgrade too

So do the Fords. Would not touch one. Nav’s don’t tend to blow up from brand new though.

Pretty sure traction control turns off when rear locker engaged in the Hilux as well - they forgot to mention that
@@ausim1000 actually I think the mighty Ranger is one of the only 4wd utes that still lets traction control work while the rear locker is on...
I'm actually surprised the nav didn't get more credit I think it's a good looking ute and with that coil rear end its a game changer for the tracks
Engine aside 👍
They didn't give credit to the Nav in many areas. It has a dedicated Towing mode to cater for the gearing and engine revs. It has a 5-point linkage suspension system with a heavy duty thick swaybar in the rear. With the 2 mode springs in the rear it rides comfortably and tows great when loaded. I use one for towing and wheeling. I love it.
Nissan always scrimps in the main areas, it's a upgraders car.
Great review guys. I tend to agree with Jocko with his ton of experience offroading, tested reliability is paramount to getting to the end of a trail.
Can't pretend to be surprised that Jocko would get the Hilux. He loves the almost complete lack of changes over the many years.
The I in Toyota stands for Innovation...
Me, I'm actually quite interested in the Amarok v6. looks very cool!
Why change what isn't broken. It's reliable and good. You don't need technology just for the sake of it. Technology is just prone to breakage. KISS.
Amarok is a city car
h28 yeah, if I'm honest I'd rather a v6 Ranger. The Amarok was interesting in the review though.

@JDMJesseee doesn't match my experience, but enjoy believing whatever the interwebs confirms you already thought was true.
I have had adblue for a couple of years now and I don’t think it’s a big problem, 1 tank last for ever and even when the tank is empty you can still drive for another 3 or 4000 km before it won’t start because of adblue.
Great video very informative thank you. I have the 2018 BT50 GSX 3.2TD 6spd manual and love it , its a beast . great ute. recommend it.
@4wd247. Have you thought of doing a Hilux generation test. Seeing how much the 4wd hilux has evolved from 1979 to the present?
How did the BT50 get the same value for money score as the DMAX when its almost 20k more?
I'd sake they'd be comparing like-for-like models. The BT-50 on test is probqbly top level spec compared to a mid range Dmax. When I looked at both last year there was only a couple of thousand difference in the mid range spec (favouring the BT).

glad you guys finally got to test the cannon. great to see it did so well! had mine for 2 years now and its been great. ill continue to buy and recommend gwm
Something to point out with the Ranger and Amerock diffs with that that cover if you do snap a rear CV do you have the ability to pop off that back cover and push it out through there provided you’re able to access everything else without special machinery
Navara any day my 2019 nav has got over 200k and goes awesome and infotainment is easy to use
Agreed....Makes one wonder about the rubish 500 k km remark. @4wd247 if you tell yourself a lie enough you'll start believing it! Oath mate
Don't right off adblue. It becomes available in containers with filling nozzles and every fuel station and supermarket sells it over in the UK. I guess that will be the same over there.
Yeah I live in rural OZ and the fuel servo up the road has it on pump, plenty of hgv use Adblue here so getting hold of it isn’t a problem at all.
Love listening to jock and Jessie get into the car details both so passionate about the nitty gritty. They educate so well.
The added cost for the adblue is still less than the 6 month servicing for the Hilux, they failed to mention anything regarding servicing intervals?
Love these Ute shootouts boys great job 👍 miss not having the Triton in this test but understand they want to hold off for the new one.

Ford Ranger is simply the best. Designed and engineered in Australia! It is the most Australian Ute on the market and supports local jobs!
Mine's a piece of crap. Typical Ford rubbish.
Mine was a piece of junk. Never buy a Ranger, ever.
