      For us down here in Au and NZ there's only one choice. Hilux all day long. Any shortfalls have been well and truly addressed in the aftermarket and a there's a massive amount of aftermarket options, parts easy to find, easy to work on and everyone knows how to work on them. If you can't afford a 70, Hilux is the next best option.

      I would have liked to see who the Triton would have gone against these newer generations of utes. Especially considering when the MR came out on top in this series of tests when it came out. Seeing how it aged would have been great. Not too sure that the new generation coming out is going to be as capable off roader going to the bigger size sometimes size ain't everything.

It's ride and handling really are put to shame, not to mention the interior noise and its lack luster motor and power delivery. Forget the tech side because my dads new mobility scooter has more. Simple truth Toyota got lazy with this car and should have by now fixed the issues. The last truly decent hilux was 2 generations ago with the N170. After that they have just been mediocre. Don't forget, the Amarok is essentially a reskinned Ranger - thats where the V6 and low range transfer come from. Not having the V6 version of the Ranger probobly let it down. Its a little bit weird to compare the Amarok engine to the Ranger, since the engine is actually provided by Ford.

    • @vanderz1012

      Many of fords engines are developed in tandem with Land Rover - the 5 cylinder diesel used in the old defender was ford developed. This V6 i believe is largely developed from the ground up with what they learned from Land Rover experience. Plus, pretty sure it was engineered and developed in Aus.

One thing I’ve noticed is that the ssangyong musso is really coming into play as a great towing and off-road vehicle. With 3.5t towing capacity. Can get them in a SWB coil sprung or a LWB coil or leaf sprung. With accessories like bullbars suspension available. I’d love to see next years video with ssangyong musso included. Go the Nav, great looking ute for it’s age even before the new face lift. Have a 2016 STX and have accumulated 235,000km so far on mine with a tune making 200hp, lifted on 35’s. Mix of wheeling every month and towing a 17ft Jayco. The tune really wakes up the motor and throttle response without requiring a throttle controller. In the time of ownership (from new) I have only had 2 rear main seal replacements and the infamous leaky hot pipe and intercooler pipes that required replacing. Went with after market alloy pipes that costed approx 2.5K in total, so to be certain they will never leak again. 1K for the rear main seal out of warranty. It’s been a really capable ute, comfortable and has never left me on the side of the road stranded. For the 3.5K I have spent in the 6 years of ownership to rectify the oil leaks, I would say it was worth it and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I would definitely own one again unless Aus Nissan brings the big cousin Titan over, then all hands on deck haha.

    • @bears2604
      @bears2604 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I also have a 2016 stx. 243k atm. Done 3 hot pipes brought replacements at wrecker for $50. I know jp captured on TH-cam promotes crg hot pipe which cost $450, platinum and others do them to. Very easy to put on. Im really happy with mine been a great vehicle good on fuel. No engine seals done. Only thing I don't like is they annoying horn which always gets bumped at the most awkward times. Might change for newer model wheel. But i vouch this is a great vehicle and more capable than others competitors in bush. They test numbers from these Muppets are stupid and predictable we know how it goes before it even starts.

      Thanks for the great information. I ordered the Nav pro4x with the 1% interest finance deal and the discounted price when Nissan just had their flash sale. The cost per week is about 1/3 or more lower than the rest excluding the Cannon and that gives a lot of room for personalisation and upgrades. With the recurve tune and a good aftermarket suspension, snorkel and tyres, will be a beast. It's also one of the best looking ones externally in my opinion although the interior leaves a bit to be desired. (At least they have put in heated electric seats now)

    No mention on fuel economy, I’ve owned a late 2020 hilux as well as a new navara. The navara gets nearly 250-300 km’s more per tank. Both 80L tanks. Think it’s something worth mentioning.
    In saying that I do think my hilux was better to drive than the navara.

    I pick up my cannon xsr next week. My first 4wd ute and will be upgrading alot of things on it so it will be a better ride. I think once some companies figure out a tune for them they will open up a little bit more potential in them and make up for the initial laggy throttle input. But coming from a old commodore i think i will be quite pleased with it and wont be regretting the outlay that it would take for a similar spec ranger or hilux.

    The comment made a few times in this presentation "good for 10 years ownership" was my guide to selecting a new ute, I studied the market closely for three years and just recently bought a new BT50 , no regrets whatsoever, really getting to know and appreciate it. Much quicker and smoother than I was expecting, I'm banking on ten or more years use in the country. Been driving 51 years now and hand on heart the BT50 is the most fuel efficient car I have ever owned and is brilliant for distance drives, effortless feel at cruise etc. Will be investing near two grand for the aftermarket steering knuckle kit that alters the geometry and removes the bump steer problem, apart from saving tyres I'm told the front end will sit more stable on the road. Thanks for the test, I really enjoyed watching.

    I picked up a base model Cannon very recently, and im glad i did. I couldn't afford a more expensive ute, and I gotta say, value for money wise, you can't beat it. From a mechanics standpoint, it also looks super easy to work on. Yes, it's a bit sluggish and laggy on the throttle, but I think a throttle controller would make a night and day difference to this vehicle. As for the suspension, one thing to note is that the XSR has the same suspension as the base model but with all the added weight of steel bumpers and roll bars, i test drove an XSR and i gotta say, the base rides a lot better being lighter. That being said, most people are probably going to upgrade the suspension anyway no matter what they get.

      I also have a 2022 Navara and I fell in love with the looks of it. Here in South Africa, the new Navaras come with an upgraded version of the old 2.5 liter single turbo diesel engine that was used in the older generation Navaras - we don't get the 2.3 twin turbo. But it also makes 140kw and 450nm. I don't why, but according to some of the guys at the dealership I spoke to, they are of the opinion that the older engine is perceived to be more reliable (don't know whether that is true or not), so the South African guys are more inclined to buy one. Their strategy seems to have worked, because the new D23 is selling a lot better than the previous D23 that we had with the twin turbo engine.

      @@jerrymyahzcat Only one is twin locked, but all the others are rear locked.
      I missed the part where they mentioned first go without lockers, but those that did it without lockers didn't get a chance to see with lockers. We also didn't see the Cannon, BT50 or VW do the first hill, and the Cannon only did it with both lockers engaged - Didn't get to see traction control.

    Didnt mention the fact the Cannons fuel filter is lower than the chassis and all the XSR offroad stuff isn't mounted very well.
    The steps are still bolted to the body with little nuts and studs not the chassis, the bullbar is bolted on with 4 bolts and no middle supports, the rear bar has questionable welds on the tow points and also mounted poorly to the chassis.
    The Cannons are also absolute junk to work on and good luck with any warranty. Majority of parts are minimum 2-4 weeks, just waited 3 months for a DPF. Oh they also have DPF issues with frequent manual regens being required.

      You're missed the point of the GWM product.
      Steps: They are not rock sliders, just a solid step.
      All steps on any of these utes are mounted to body.
      Rock sliders are attached to chassis, EX. Rugged X.
      Steel Front Bumper: It's not a bull bar, it's just more solid than standard plastic panels.
      Mind you, in South Africa it gets a factory mounted winch built into it, so must be some rigidity behind it.
      Steel Rear Bumper: as above, more solid.

      Had mine since May 2021, has had 35s on it since it was a week old, I have never done a single manual DPF burn in the 45000 kms I have done. I broke a rear diff (Big tyres, too much throttle lots of wheel hop). But other than that it has been flawless, it is a shame others have had bad luck with them.
      Couple of mates have wanted to get one and I have to steer them to the pages of poor buggers that have had all the issues, even though mine has been great.

    How did the BT50 get the same value for money score as the DMAX when its almost 20k more?

    • @tonythepony3739
      @tonythepony3739 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'd sake they'd be comparing like-for-like models. The BT-50 on test is probqbly top level spec compared to a mid range Dmax. When I looked at both last year there was only a couple of thousand difference in the mid range spec (favouring the BT).

    Hey jocko… the ranger has a gear limiter. You can literally set it up to have a 2 gear gearbox… I do pre delivery and accessory fitting as a job for tropical auto group in rocky and found that feature out while playing around with manual mode…

    I would not worry about the AdBlue. You only fill it once or twice a year. Every 15k-20k km. I don’t know how well it works with your performance upgrades though.

    Surely it's about time in Australia to do some reviews of the American pick up trucks that are coming on our market more and more commonly. It would be cool to see them against maybe a 79 and aussie style vehicles of the same likes

      I would love to see these guys review the Jeep Gladiator. I have watched a few different comparison videos on other channels that feature the Gladiator Rubicon and it consistently wins in the 4x4 category hands down. It is widely considered the best 4x4 ute out of the box. However, for overall value its cons include high fuel consumption; low towing capacity; smaller payload; and not value for money. I love my Gladiator, but I dont actually recommend it to people unless they are going to use it (or are a Jeep fan).

    • @finchtoob
      @finchtoob 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @euromellows8 that's true but I'd say the same about a Wrangler too. They're built to be awesome off road and the things that make it so good on difficult tracks also makes them not so good on road or towing
