  • Graham goes over every inch of his D-MAX build to show you how to build a dual cab that can tackle the hardest 4WD tracks in Australia AND long distance touring!
Watch for all of the most important mods you can make to your 4WD to build a more capable, reliable and enjoyable machine! Graham goes over every inch of his D-MAX build to show you how to build a dual cab that can tackle the hardest 4WD tracks in Australia AND epic long distance touring!
Just a few of the mods Graham's made:
    - Suspension is one of the BEST mods you can make to your 4WD! In most cases, installing a 2 inch lift kit will give you the clearance you need to take those harder lines. Good quality lift kits won’t sacrifice your handling either, keeping great on-road performance.
    - If you’ve got a dual cab ute, a good 4WD canopy is an EPIC mod. Carrying all your gear safely and securely, keeping it out of the mud and dust is something that’ll keep you out bush for longer. Canopies also let you get creative with mounting roof racks, recovery equipment and roof storage!
    - Installing a 12v system makes life on the road THAT much easier! Running led strip lights in the car, installing a portable fridge, battery management systems and solar controllers are just a few things to consider.
    - If you’re doing tough tracks you NEED a winch! Winching up hard tracks is something we’re all too used to, and installing a winch has saved our skin countless times.
    - The best 4WD tyres are the ones that suit your driving style. If you’re in and out of bog holes a set of muddies are the go, but if you’re looking at more time on tamer tracks, good all terrain tyres are perfect.
    - Getting the right barwork for your 4WD can save you bigtime in the long run. Strong bull bars can save you from expensive body damage, add recovery points and let you mount spotlights, lightbars and winches!
    - Underbody bashplates protect VITAL components from damage. Underbody protection means you don’t need to worry about bent driveshafts and cracked sumps.
    - Front locker vs rear locker. The age old question! Get more traction, go further and see more.

Really needed a winch when at age 12, I got my best mate’s dad’s 4x4 stuck in what I thought was a creek and turned out to be a 5ft deep bog hole hahaha. Didn’t have any vehicles on the farm to recover so we had to wait a few hours for another mates truck to pull her out. Plenty of winch worthy trees around that hole

2015 Isuzu Dmax. Most corrugated road I’ve ever done is through the Gunderbooka National Park in northern NSW.
I would love a set of quality bash plates as I am constantly scrapping my underbody. I need to protect those crucial parts.

Being from Austria rather than Australia it's not easy for me to guess the most demanding track in Australia, but from what I've seen on your videos the Old Telegraph track is top of my list.
I drive a Pinzgauer 712 6x6. It has a clearance of 37 cm underneath the diff, so I guess I can do without a lift :-)
Cheers lads, and keep on doing these great videos !

Thanks, Graham, for featuring this useful topic on modification and the things to consider. I am very keen to do some mods to my Isuzu D-max but do not know where exactly or how to start, and the considerations to make without unknowingly 'harming' my D-max in the long run. And this video answers my questions. Wonderful, beneficial video for 4WD enthusiasts!

    2019 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport.
We took it 4wding about 2 months ago completely stock and the factory bash plate is bent in exactly like the one you guys showed in the video, we luckily got a way with no drivetrain damage but we don’t have the money to replace them and when we do we will most likely end up bashing them again, we would love a set of underbody protection so the next time we go out we don’t have to worry about potentially going home on the back off a tow truck, cheers Graham and Shauno.

G'day Graham!! Love your work mate! Only a month ago a mate and I drove billygoats bluff track, while we sat on the edge of the Ridge and crack a beer I couldn't help but think how much I need a fridge!! There's nothing better then reaching into a cold fridge for a beer after a big day on the tracks! Also what I love about the mycoolman fridge is that you can take the whole fridge out the ya favourite fishing spot and you can keep on going with a battery!! Bloody awesome stuff!!

So much sage advice here Graham.
Love your canopy and would like to see one this good on my Triton (one day). I've certainly got some ideas from this video on a few worthwhile tweaks to my current setup. One thing I really hope subscribers take keen notice of is Grahams advice about where to put weight. Everything heavy in my ute is over or forward of the rear axle. With the exception of a 30 litre water tank in the back right corner. It might not seem like much, but it's too much weight in the wrong spot and does affect stability. It needs to be moved, at least to the centre line of the vehicle.

I have a 2019 Holden Colorado. And one time I was out at the Riverstone tracks and there was a bunch of people in their underpants running towards us covered in mud and there said they where stuck. And somehow they got a brand new 4x2 Toyota hilux stuck head first into a bog hole. And we had no winch so we got a ratchet strap and hooked to the rear tow bar and tried to pull them out but no luck. And that’s why we needed a winch.😂

Hi Graham and the 4WD 24-7 team, thanks for the great episode, it was very timely for me, I’m driving a 2009 Mitsubishi MN Triton.
Q: Why do I need a set of bash plates?
A: I am currently modifying my Ute and preparing it to travel Australia full time towing a small off-road Van with my family, we plan to start in April 2021. (no end date 😊) I would love a set of quality bash plates as insurance, see, I’m very adventurous and plan to explore as much of Aus as possible, getting into hard to reach places that most don’t make the effort to get too, but I’m also notoriously accident prone and I reckon a good set of bash plates are an essential mod for us as a precaution to help keep the car the that I and my family will be relying on in working order.

Front locker is superior as demonstrated in the new video (DMW made it with you guys).
Lockers are for restoring a loss of traction.
IFS loses traction more than live axles and the rear of the vehicle by design has more traction going over obstacles.
Best option is to get both.

    Great suggestions that make sense.
My trick is to apply trail mods with vehicles in the full-size class like the Ford Super-Duty F250 or F350 (new or used), especially the older diesel models prior to emissions on them which plugged their power outputs up. Although the durable big petrol V8 engine or older V10 made for good off-road torque with hauling grace, too. Being over 6 feet tall,I like my full-size trucks better over smaller double-cab rigs due to leg room constraints, as well as headroom.

Nice video, I just realised it's quite a few years ago now this video was made.. Most corrugated track I've ever been on was the border track Victoria South Australia. So straight but bumpy. Never ending. And UHF, camping with mates years ago, on the backwaters of the Murray River. 9pm my mate and I went searching for wood down a few dirt tracks. But could not find the campsite on our return. Took us till 1am. Funny thing our new car has no USB radio. It costs so much now, to build up a brand new 4wd. My wife keeps going off about what it all costs. Lift, front bar, all terrain tires, rims, suspension improvements. Even recovery points never ending. It's our first brand new car, and when we eventually get a UHF, I want it professionally done. No wires, radio under the dash etc. receiver on a magnetic hook that plugs in when you want it and put away when not in use. You know another funny thing. This car doesn't even have a CD player. It's good for Spotify if you have Wi-Fi range. Haha.

Hilux.. I've just ordered a whole kit out for the back of my Hilux with a brand new canopy from the Perth 4wd show! Minus a fridge! Our recent trip away to Mt Augustus is a prime example of not having a cold beer at the end of the day.. stinking hot day and melted ice in an esky.. after setting up camp on sundown and having that magnificent view of Mt Augustus and sitting with literally a warm beer!!

Definitely needed that coolman out in Licola, perfect little camp spot, down in the bottom of B2 track on the way to Mount Margaret. There is a river down the bottom and on the 36 degree day we camped there all I could think about was a thirst quenching beer to have while sitting in the river 👌🍻

Afternoon, The time I wish I had a winch would have to be when myself and two of my mates went for a 4wdin a stock rodeo around my family farm near glasshouse, the sun was going down and when were just heading out. to cut a long story short we were driving up a track when we slid of the side of the hill siding into two big trees. one tree was on the rear diver door and the other was behind the tray. this cased us to not be able to go forward and not be able to go back we were stuck. We had to walk out of the track and down to the farmer from Maleny Black Angus who had a winch fitted to his car. we drove down and hook up a snatch block and pull the ute sideways off the trees.
After the mammoth of a weekend we vote never to go 4wding without a winch

I own a 2015 Hilux and have a 2 inch lift installed but sadly I’ve mad the mistake of not realising all the weight that I’m currently putting in it (tray, canopy, top tent) and the current suspension will sag. And with the most corrugated track! I would have to say Watagans. Not actually sure though, Thanks graham😂

Re. A fridge... a few years back, I was helping my bro on his property down Eyre Peninsula for a coupla weeks. We ran about 3km worth of stringer posts in a couple of days, during mammoth heat and at the end of the day, sat and watched the sunset with a cold one from the middle of a 10,000 acre wheat farm. Pretty bloody awesome! I need a fridge to get back there and do it again, now the borders are open. Yew!

Just bought my first 4WD, a Nissan Navara D40 series 6. Bash plates are one of the first mods I want to get as I took my dad's car out to the Flinders in SA and bottomed out a few times. Did no damage, thank god, but knowing that its something I'm a bit clumsy with, definitely going to protect my own cars undercarage!!

Just upgraded to a fresh blank slate (2013 D-MAX), and first on the list is a 2" lift. The most consistently corrugated road I drive would have to be sections of the PDR late in the season. It can go from a dirt highway to a goat track in a matter of km's. A close second and worthy mention would also be the road from Maytown back to the highway (especially the braking bumps on some of the sneaky corners).

Onya Graham. My winch story is from Mcbrides Beach, NSW in 2018, solo trip. Bit off more than I could chew. Got stuck less than halfway up on a small angle and thought it was all over. Front locker didn't engage so ended up having to back down 50 metres and park up along the side of the track (in gear of course). Then started the long arduous walk up to the top to get someone to come and rescue me. To make the whole situation worse, id lost my phone fishing a few hours before :O. Taught me a real lesson .

Re the Fulcrum lift kit, last November had Fulcrum replace the springs, shocks and bushes on my 2003 Nissan Patrol and couldn't be happier as this car took me over the Telegraph Road to the tip of Cape York and if there is a more corrugated road I haven't been on it.
But now I have just purchased a brand new Ford Ranger (2 days ago) and am about to go through the setup procedure.
Already ordered the Bull Bar, Winch, UHF Radio, Snorkel and a Canopy to replace the tub. Next is the LIft Kit and power in the canopy.
So a Fulcrum Lift Kit from Fulcrum would be fantastic.
PS: So are many great tips in this video that I saved it.

I'm hoping to get a new isuzu dmax in the next 6 months and after seeing what you've put yours through even with relatively basic mods I think you've got me sold haha. I think a winch would really come in handy because the two blokes I'd go 4wding with both have tritons haha. And a two way would be just the treat for me to feed them heaps on the drive after I've pulled them out. As for the corrugated roads, I reckon any road in Australia that the local council "maintains" especially the dirt roads.

I got stuck like a kook out by myself when I was 18 or 19 with a 2wd Isuzu Rodeo on some bald 33’s and a parts store shackle lift and cranked torsions. I decided I was going to be a cool guy and go blast through this local trail after a good Florida rain and boy oh boy did I find out this thing also had an open diff quick! I somehow buried it up to the hood thinking if I just went faster.... hahaha I’m thinking about that phone call now. What a rough night! I need that winch for my new rig! It’s currently in process of an engine swap (2013 F150), waiting on the new long block as we speak and this would be the perfect time to install that bad boy and relocate the intercooler with a nice new piece of kit too!

Just bought a little ln106 hilux and it’s fairly stock. To me, steep point (most western part of Australia) has to be the longest 3-4 hours of corrugations in aus. I remember dads spotties came off and our mate lost a few things from the rattling too! Bloody beautiful once you get to steep point though!!
