Allegro in Italian means cheerful, which is not what a Ferrari or Lamborghini driver is going to be when it's overtaken by a 400HP/ton British Leyland car will be. Bellisimo!
Golf GTI mk1 drivers for that part won’t be pleased either. I know this is a fact , for I owned and build back in the mid eighties a Allegro estate mk2 with a 1750cc engine, sharper camshaft and double Weber carburettor. Had some Aluminium wheels from a Mitsubishi Gallant with 60series tires on it. I was in my twenties back then and people didn’t understand why I would by this car. Bud it never let me down and I liked it a lot. Greetings from the Netherlands and keep up the good work. 💪
My 1st car as a 19 year old was an Austin Allegro Sport, it had twin Webber carburetors, fog lamps, fully front reclining seats, really comfortable and lovely car to drive and it flew. Needless to say am 60 now and drive much more sensibly. 🤗
You must have had the 'E' Series engine then. We had an Allegro Equipe for a while and the 1750 is really more of a tractor engine it's got such a long stroke and loads of low-down torque - but not much speed! However, I bought a 1300 'super' (Yeah, really.... super), and modified the heck out of the engine: skimmed MG metro pistons, compression ratio of 12:1, Rimflo valves, enlarged exhaust valves, Teflon-coated valve guides, Kent Cams 266 Megadyne camshaft, high ratio rockers, stage 3 head, but only on the exhaust side, reciprocating parts lightened and everything balanced, electronic ignition, Mini-Spares timing belt, torque ram with stub stack, minispares inlet manifold, rebuilt gearbox with hi-ratio final drive (about 28% higher than standard), custom-made Janspeed exhaust and K&N filter. I think that was about it. Now that REALLY flew, and I could outpull a 2.0 Capri of the same year without even revving the engine hard. But totally standard appearance including wheel trims - Such a joy!
My brother and I got given an Allegro Vanden plas by a really old guy when I was about 17- it was his pride and joy. While it was utterly hideous, I couldn’t help but admire the quality of the luxurious interior, walnut and leather everywhere, folding tables, vanity mirrors, lighting, it was literally Rolls Royce quality inside! Very odd car, I feel ashamed to say we absolutely trashed it,rallying it around the Scottish highlands!🤣🤣🏴

Love it. The finer technical and detail spec’s on the engine frankly are beyond me but I fully appreciate the intent and thought process, and enjoy seeing the attention to detail; cross scoring the cylinders? Of course, makes perfect sense. Going down the route of Honda Civic with it’s very short genetic links to BL / Rover makes absolute sense…even if you felt you needed to justify it; frankly why not, there are far more insane swaps out there and we are still intrigued! The argument of insane BHP is ridiculous anyway (what was the Pirelli advert? “Power is nothing without control”?) which did lead me to think “sports diesel” having had an Alfa 147 jtdm; going for the torque rather than the BHP but the world has moved on and I agree that would be considered even less acceptable in our more “enlightened” times. Keep it coming, always interested in what the next steps are, along with the EV reviews…..I will take the plunge, honest.
Really enjoy the detail, really interesting stuff. Only one tiny complaint, I find the audio levels differ a bit between shots, and have to adjust my volume a bit. Nothing major, just something to keep in mind for future. Lovely job otherwise 👍

It’s coming together 😋😋
Just fascinating. And that's a massive turbo!
Can’t wait to see this built, love the attention to detail on this project
Love this agro I look forward to it blowing away m3s on track ....
What a great project, love the Honda engine being used as I am a big Honda fan.
brilliant going to be proper fun this car
My first car was an Allegro in that colour!
such an outstanding channel
Many thanks, welcome!
Enjoying following this story...
Good stuff been waiting for an update on the allegro
Nice one Jonny - looking good.
Really enjoy the detail, really interesting stuff. Only one tiny complaint, I find the audio levels differ a bit between shots, and have to adjust my volume a bit. Nothing major, just something to keep in mind for future. Lovely job otherwise 👍
Some stunning work there and well done on keeping the power level sensible. This will be a fantastic car. Also, a similar power plant in the Insight would be tremendous fun! I may know of another Insight you could use
Poor Insight would be ruined by 400bhp. I love it as-is (well, a slightly more powerful batt pack and PHEV would be good).
I love Allegro's my dad had a few I need one in my life purely for sentimental value
That's how this project started - beware the sentiment!
@@TheLateBrakeShow yh true but there is something in my subconscious telling me I need one can't wait for next vid really enjoy the older stuff you do on your channel
So do I - I had a 1980 Allegro 1750 TC Equipe an excellent reliable and quick car for its day and I would love another one just now but only around 10 still known to exist - my brother then mothers 1978 Allegro 1500LE we had in the family at the same time was an excellent reliable car as well and not many of these left now either.
@@williamwoods8022 great car dad had a 1500 estate then a vanden plas with the grill both had the square steering wheel and soft velar seats in brown lol
Still love the District Line seats 😄
K20 in a Clio 172 sounds a great idea!
Loved this, your content just keeps getting better.👍
Great work mate an great video Johnny 👌
Many thanks sir
Nice,!
To see the top of a Type-R K20 cam cover in anything other then the Honda red crackle paint seems strange/wrong for a Honda fan but seeing the condition of the existing paint on that FN2 block makes me realise why. I have a 2003 EP3 since new, and the cam cover is still pretty good considering its 20 years old next September
Ooooohhh, its getting closer!!
Yeah!!?
Great video, look to be making great progress, maybe have a word with retro-Dave how he found solution to bda zetec cover oil filler, no welding and simple solution
Even 200 bhp would be hilarious Jonny … but 400?! 🤯 Your grin will turn your face inside out.
Brilliant video. Entertaining and educational 😊
I hope there is some kind of sponsorship or mate's rates here as the skilled man hours on this car are massive !?!
Finally you need to strip the interior and dash of a Vanden Plas 1500/1740 , fabulous.
I have new interior. Watch previous episodes!
Niel is power units Hatfield by the way , loads of years experience and well trusted in the motor trade locally
