      Exactly, it's the pose and the face he's making, and the caption. It's just too funny. I hate when people use "ugly" as an insult though, it's so shallow, especially when the person you're insulting isn't even unattractive in the traditional sense like dream, like it just shows how lazy your sense of humor is and that you put way too much importance on looks. People posting "subtle" thirst traps is always cringe and unintentionally hilarious though regardless of how attractive you are

    the QSMP vs USMP thing will always be a little weird to me because why would dream have any real interest in creating a multilingual server besides as a way to say "hey look i care too!" Quackity is bilingual and has two large audiences: one that is a spanish speaking community and another that is an english speaking community. it makes way more sense for Quackity to be devoted to trying to marry the two audiences and do something that is good for both sides.

    I think a super important bit of context for Quackity and some other of Dream's friends beginning to drop him is the treatment he gave some of the members of DSMP. Reportedly (I've only heard this through word of mouth so I could be totally wrong), he would rarely communicate lore events, taking literal months to respond to questions about the plot when he was the main Big Bad of the server, and would sleep through events he was supposed to take part in - resulting in people like Quackity not being able to fully finish the stories they'd been planning out for months. In addition, QSMP was something Quackity had been talking about doing for a long time, and given the launch of the server, which was complete with a fully built opening area, announcement videos, timed events, and fully animated cutscenes, had clearly taken a long while to put together. Dream's server got announced maybe a month or so after QSMP's launch, to which there was radio silence on when it would actually happen afterwards. There was also clips from a multilingual event that both Dream and Quackity participated in - in which Dream showed little to no interest in attempting to communicate with the non-English speakers, making this claim of his that this was a "passion project" all the more suspect. I've got no stake in the game - I'm not a superfan of either creator, but from the outside looking in it does definitely feel like USMP was an attempt to capitalise on the success that the QSMP had gotten. And I think Quackity's patience was beginning to wear a little thin, from both the blatant copying of an idea he'd clearly had in the works for months, and the shitshow that was the DSMP near the end - hence him ghosting Dream.

He definitely was on some sort of path which is obvious in and of itself, but fame like this also just doesn't magically happen, like ever

    To be clear, I am a fan of Qsmp and certainly not a fan of dream, so I am biased, but imagine thinking that if you publicly cry about the fact someone isn’t replying to you it’ll fix everything. Especially seeing as one of the main reasons his own smps have failed is due to his lack of communication, so he’s one to talk about ghosting. Also the ‘wearing a super noticeable and eye catching mask everwhere in public because people keep recognizing my face an noticing me’ thing is really funny. I agree, man really needs a pr team it’s so wild to me that someone with his level of success is so active on twitter and yet doesn’t have a single voice of reason to tell him ‘hey, maybe that’s a bad idea’. I feel like he has a new controversy trending every 2 days, and whether someone can argue that it’s an overreaction about something or not, it’s far to frequent at this point. • @pinkrose8272

      My thing about dreams content is that I always considered him the most bland, even though he is the most famous. It is not like I never laughed at any of his jokes he made or never found him in DSMP entertaining. He is just the most meh. Even though he is controversial now, I always saw him as the least objectable in how he saw himself. I watched way too much of DSMP during covid because why not and If I had to describe his persona he presents himself as I still struggle. I am not talking about a character, he obviously played the villain in that story and a few times he even did a good job doing that (once he figured out what acting was during the exile arc he pulled off some honestly kinda impressive improv speeches). Like it was not roleplaying every single second on the server there was plenty of normal streamer content and humor, during non "lore parts" and even towards those parts everyone had a personality different than their character. Something that made them stand out and many were able to sell them very well leading to huge growths (especially Tommyinnit). But who is dream was he trying to be egotistical, arrogant, nice, an everyman, some genius player? I still don't know. He was just kinda there. The most reaction I ever got out of him was him being a bit annoying in some of Karl's content but that is all. I could never get him down at all but at the same time he got the most growth from that all.
      I want to make it clear i have nothing against his content I just always found it weird he was the biggest as he was the most dull. He was just always there when he wasn't acting. I never got it. I got into a lot of cool MCYT creators through DSMP but the one who had his name on the whole thing never got my attention. Also me saying I have no issue with his content does not mean I agree with all he has done. That guy really needs a PR team and to delete Twitter. He is too impulsive to deal with having that many fans and has made too many stupid mistakes.

      Honestly, same. I mean I am guilty of being an ex fan of dream and watching the dream smp, however, his friends were the one who carried that server and they were the ones who kept me interested in it. Dream himself was kinda a person who bounced off his friends' humor but by himself is kinda.. stale. I mainly j watched his videos w George and Sapnap but easily get bored when he's by himself. He's just not that charismatic or funny. For me the ones who rly carried smp were Wilbur and Quackity.

    • @pinkrose8272
      @pinkrose8272 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      @@daphnedaphn3 I agree. If I am going to be slightly complimentary towards Dream he was great at creating situations for other people to be funny which is a skill in a way. But as you said he never really could carry the humor. I think the reason why his most successful series is Minecraft manhunt, is because he is not alone. Everyone else can be funny and at the same time he didn't really have to talk that much just play the game which he is way better at making entertaining compared to his commentary.
      I also agree with the point that he never carried the server. Like even though the dream smp was technically his and he was a major aspect of the story. He was never really the reason it was THAT successful in my opinion. His big name might have helped with publicity. But so much of that early roleplaying was carried by Wilbur's writing early in and his charisma. He made the plots that made the server so big and set it up for such a huge success. Another huge aspect of the server came from the big personalities and improv skills of a lot of the creators who at times pulled off kind of impressive dramatic performances that kept the fans so engaged (like Tommy, Slimecicle, and Ranboo). Or the ones who were not afraid to have huge production values, to try to one-up everyone else (like Quackity and Karl). I am not the biggest Dream SMP fan in the world and kinda fell out once it all got too complex, and the story became too bloated. I would just sometimes occasionally check in on the creator's plots that I liked but I would never seek out Dream or see what's going on with him even though he never streamed on the server he was in everyone else's streams but I really just didn't care. He was just there. just a presence that existed in the background which is kinda fitting for the character he was playing I guess. But still weird that on the server that is named after him he is far from the main character.
      I am happy that so many on the server were able to get huge growths and stuff and can now continue on to the next part of their careers now bigger than before, with a whole new audience. Many of them are cool and really deserve it. And even though I have issues with the dream smp and the fandom I enjoyed my time watching that content. But with all the controversy Dream keeps on getting himself into, I don't know how much longer his career will last.

      @@user-kg4xp7kj4e from what I understood, Anthony basically mentioned how if Dream keeps responding to mean people’s tweets, it makes more people want to provoke him? If he just ignored them then no one would bother as much I guess, so there’d be less drama. The fact that he keeps unnecessarily responding fuels more people to keep doing it just to get more responses out of him (hence making drama worse and worse)

    Id like to think that if it had taken longer for dream to reach the level of fame hes at now, then maybe hed behave a little better. It seems to me that most of his controversies come from him not knowing or understanding just how big his reach is and the responsibility that comes with that. I think that Dream just blew up so fast that he never had time to adjust, and so he still behaves with the mindset of a youtuber with like...a few hundred thousand subscribers, not understanding the huge concequences his actions have.

    • @minihwas
      @minihwas ปีที่แล้ว +12

      My understanding of the internet is that the ridicule isn't always directly related to the feature people are ridiculing, but rather their general opinion of the person. I think most people would say he's an average to good looking guy under usual circumstances. But people dislike him, so they went for his appearance, especially since he hyped it up so much and essentially painted a target on his back for the people who don't like him
      Prime example of this is in kpop fandom spaces. Pretty hard to deny that most kpop idols are good looking, but the minute there's a controversy or dislike for someone their appearance will get dragged through the mud. Haters will go for the easiest thing they can I suppose

    hello local young brown gal checking in, first off this made me subscribe, second of all, you literally hit the nail on the head about all of this. ever since i got into mcyt my OVERWHELMING feeling has been that dream DESPERATELY needs a PR manager. it's not "inauthentic" to have someone there to prevent you from giving into your worst impulses to Post. frankly he/his fanbase (as well as awsten knight from waterparks and his fanbase) literally made me go back to school for a masters degree because the insane level of WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU THINKING and YOUR BEHAVIOUR EGGS ON THE WORST CORNERS OF YOUR FANBASE STOP feeling i was having every day frustrated me so much that i was like ok i need to actually formally research this because i know there's a correlation here. oversharing, getting too personal, creating hierarchies within your fanbase (for more on this check out the Card Thing That Happened At Vidcon) all create this overly friendly environment that makes your fans skew incredibly UNHEALTHILY parasocial (and i maintain parasociality is not inherently bad, i just think some creators foster it to extremes in a way that is irresponsible) and feel the need to go full attack dog about every little thing when instead you could just... chill and be chill and enjoy your success with them.

    • @mueggsy
      @mueggsy ปีที่แล้ว +42

      i wish pinely touched more on the extreme parasocial relationship between dream and his fans in this video, bc you're totally right about how unhealthy it is and i'd like to see an analysis about how that's fostered. every day i wake up grateful that john & hank green/vlogbrothers were the first content creators i was a fan of (like 10 years ago now) bc i have yet to see a fan base healthier than theirs. and what's the Card Thing That Happened At Vidcon? i couldn't find anything about it when i searched for it
      also congrats on pursuing your masters! hopefully you can figure out what sparks these dumpster fires 😭

    • @simashakeri95
      @simashakeri95 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      @@mueggsy yeah absolutely i think hank and john do a really good job of still being friendly with their fans in a way that feels youtuber and personable and not in the sort of colder distant way traditional celebrities interact with fans while still maintaining and recognizing the professional boundaries and inherent power dynamics that are at play in those interactions. i feel the same mostly because my first real fandoms were bands and this was back in like 2008 so social media and stan culture wasnt the way it is now so i feel like i got to feel "closer" to my favs while still not feeling like our relationship was anything more than creator-fan or expecting anything super personal or intrusive.
      so at vidcon dream and some of his friends/employees were handing out these cards to a select group of fans (a lot of them bigger twitter accounts but i'm not sure if they were all given out this way) but it was extremely limited (i believe i read somewhere they made 50 cards and didn't even hand them all out) and anyone who got a card also got a passcode phrase for a website that was essentially a tour announcement/ticket buying site. so he gave this very specific group of mostly big name fans exclusive first access to these tickets. i think personally creating hierarchies and having clear favourites is one of theeeee worst things a creator can do to foster a healthy fanbase because it makes fans do really extreme things for attention in the hopes of achieving that status and also makes them have a lot of infighting as well because of the clear favouritism so i have no idea WHY he thought this was a good idea. i don't even think it's unnatural to recognize certain fans you see a lot in your mentions or whatever but don't make it so obvious that youre on first name basis with them and clearly like them more than the fans that maybe are more shy or keep to themselves.
      thank you!! i hope so too, i'm still trying to figure out the best way to actually do the research because it's not a topic i think a lot of really overly parasocial fans are eager to discuss because no one thinks /they're/ the problem or doing something wrong but... I HOPE I CAN STILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE SOMEHOW. i really just want to create some kind of general guidelines to help foster healthy fanbases if i can figure out what they should be through research.
      apologies for the ESSAY i will be quiet now

      @rain_upon_glass ปีที่แล้ว +8

      i genuinely could not agree with you any more on this !! i may ramble a bit here because i am absolutely fascinated (and a little unnerved by) by this topic and am SO glad/excited to hear that there are people dedicated to researching it. i watched a very well made video essay on the relatively new medium of “parasocial horror” once; ever since then every time i think about unhealthy audience/creator relationships it leads me back to exactly what you mentioned. fanbases that grew in size unnaturally quickly and didn’t give the creator time to gradually learn how to interact with their audience, fans unwilling to accept their own dangerous tendencies, creators that foster those dangerous tendencies either intentionally or via a failure to set proper boundaries, etc. we as humans aren’t capable of maintaining “real” relationships with that many people at once, so if creators put off the impression that they CAN do this with each individual member of their audience (ex. dream setting up a texting line for his fans) expectations and the desperation to get their attention in any way possible skyrockets leading to… well. really weird shit LMAO
      i’ve noticed that the popular creators i watch who don’t seem to foster this behavior and do a good job of setting boundaries both a) have been online WAY longer and are generally older than dream and b) stay offline as much as possible when they’re not creating to decompress/ignore trolling and bait by simply. not seeing it. so i’m convinced there must be some kind of correlation there !! (basically touching grass does actually seem to prevent a lot of these worst case scenarios)
      jesus okay sorry to talk for that long but genuinely thank you so much for dedicating your time to this because i really do believe it will only get more important as time goes on !! the scariest thing about this is that internet parasociality is a relatively new concept hasn’t quite been happening for long enough for us to really see the long-term effects yet, so i think it’s important to monitor stuff like this to try and set some guide lines for future creators and their fanbases. basically you’re doing important work and i went a little insane that there are other people out there as interested in this topic as i am so i appreciate your time if you read/skimmed all this LMAOO

      @simashakeri95 wow okay the Card Thing is literally so so bad. like for all the reasons you listed, but also gatekeeping in fandoms is a problem anyway but i can't imagine how bad it must be in a fandom where some fans can say "actually i am a bigger fan than you and i know dream better, here is the Offical Card i was given to prove it."
      yeah now that you mention it research is going to be trickier to navigate since no fan whose parasociality is a problem is really gonna recognize it as such. like i hesitate to call it culty bc a lot of things are called cultlike that aren't cultlike but it feels really culty to me?? like people only recognize it for what it was once they're out and not while they're in it, there's the idolization of the charasmatic figurehead, that figurehead rewarding devotion (dream for sure does this, some other creators probably), and how the members are utilized by the figurehead to carry out their will... am i stretching here??? i hope i'm stretching here

SO THANK YOU i also love that other people are on the same train of thought as me because it helps solidify that the research is something with potential and not just BS in my head.

    Dream responding to serious grooming allegations: guys i didn't do it unu
    Dream responding to a single misunderstanding between similar ideas: The Bible (from Koine Greek τὰ βιβλία, tà biblía, 'the books') is a collection of religious texts or scriptures, some, all of which, or a variant of which, are held to be sacred in Christianity, Judaism, Samaritanism, Islam, and many other religions. The Bible is an anthology, a compilation of texts of a variety of forms, originally written in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Koine Greek. These texts include instructions, stories, poetry, and prophecies, and other genres. The collection of materials that are accepted as part of the Bible by a particular religious tradition or community is called a biblical canon. Believers in the Bible generally consider it to be a product of divine inspiration, but the way they understand what that means and interpret the text varies.
    The religious texts were compiled by different religious communities into various official collections. The earliest contained the first five books of the Bible. It is called the Torah in Hebrew and the Pentateuch (meaning five books) in Greek; the second oldest part was a collection of narrative histories and prophecies (the Nevi'im); the third collection (the Ketuvim) contains psalms, proverbs, and narrative histories. "Tanakh" is an alternate term for the Hebrew Bible composed of the first letters of those three parts of the Hebrew scriptures: the Torah ("Teaching"), the Nevi'im ("Prophets"), and the Ketuvim ("Writings"). The Masoretic Text is the medieval version of the Tanakh, in Hebrew and Aramaic, that is considered the authoritative text of the Hebrew Bible by modern Rabbinic Judaism. The Septuagint is a Koine Greek translation of the Tanakh from the third and second centuries BC; it largely overlaps with the Hebrew Bible.
    Christianity began as an outgrowth of Second Temple Judaism, using the Septuagint as the basis of the Old Testament. The early Church continued the Jewish tradition of writing and incorporating what it saw as inspired, authoritative religious books. The gospels, Pauline epistles, and other texts quickly coalesced into the New Testament.
    With estimated total sales of over five billion copies, the Bible is the best-selling publication of all time. It has had a profound influence both on Western culture and history and on cultures around the globe. The study of it through biblical criticism has indirectly impacted culture and history as well. The Bible is currently translated or is being translated into about half of the world's languages.

    The more I see cases like this, the more and more SovietWomble's streaming preference for avoiding a face cam because he doesn't like mugging to a camera sounds like a good idea. Gave him an insulating distance from his fanbase, further reinforced by him engaging in self-deprecating humor and he and his friends just going no holds barred on mocking each other. Thus, no fanbase that had built up some obsessive mental image of him as some secret adonis. He also didn't make a big deal about his eventual face reveal either, sticking it in as a final gag in a 3-hour-long video essay.
    The reaction to the reveal that Womble was a regular-looking British dude in his 30s has been the polar opposite of Dream's, where you have fans split on being surprised and calling him handsome, even hot, (and jokingly, mostly, simping for him) to being in denial about that being his real face because they'd expected him to look "nerdier" based on all the jokes at his expense over the years.
    Well, that and Womble and ZF Clan not being shy about putting their foot down with their fans, compared to Dream being afraid to defy them. Also, despite joking about himself as being a supposedly out of contact shut-in with only a dog for company, his Tweets show the dude regularly touches grass and actually gets out to walk his dog around, even interacting with other dog owners.

That's it right? You accomplished what you set out to do, now go enjoy the fruits of your labor while you're still young. Why stick around and fulfil two faces quote from The Dark Knight "die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain"? Fred let his character go and bought a ranch house! Now he just does whatever he wants. If I were a famous TH-camr I would do the same.

      he’s only been a famous youtuber for like 3 years. Not nearly long enough to retire. If he’s been going at it as long as markiplier, then maybe i’d see it as the time to retire.

      technically he can retire whenever he wants. i def feel like he should have retired at his peak instead of doing and being… whatever this is

    I smiled so hard during this video - but the ending, that's when I just broke out laughing! You are a very, very talented comedian and writer. Your delivery is top notch. Not only is what you say very relevant, but you say everything with that twinkle in the eye that makes it even better. Thank you for the laugh!

    If I ever become an author, I'll be under a pseudonym and trying to be as mysterious as possible. The reason relevant to this is because if I become popular, people will only be able to criticize my work because they'll have next to no information on me as a person.

    He literally promotes parasocial relationships with every move he makes. It's completely insane that he does it. He purposefully made his own fanbase one of the most toxic one's ever. It's like he is actively trying to kill his career.

      Tbh as a brown person I just assumed he really did have blond hair and green eyes since white people seem to have a different perception on what is blond/e and brunet/te. Plus I wasn't exactly so invested in his supposed features to zoom into his eyes like some weirdo to see if it was "gorgeous, deep emerald green oRbS"
