  • While Logan Paul is in the title of this thing, my main focus here is to examine consumerist culture on youtube in general and the way audience's react to it, to sort of bask myself in how bizarre and over the top it all is.
in this video I'll be talking about logan paul, Ksi and Prime the drink that they released, I'll also be talking about other keywords like: shane dawson, jeffree star, their makeup, jake paul, mrbeast and matthew beem!!!

I'm a primary teacher. Seeing kids argue over prime, use prime as a bragging tool / insulting tool, bragging about how much their parents spent on prime on facebook. Hell, even one kid brought in multiple bottles to show off into one of my classes ??? Like IDK how to explain to them that they're being exploited

Anything you try will be better than doing nothing, kids should be taught to think for themselves and solve problems themselves, and this is probably one of the most difficult problems a person can encounter. I fully get how difficult this may be. 🫤

This is the first thing that came to my mind seeing all the clips with the kids. I think a lot of this is parents not being able to keep up with teaching their kids about the exploitative nature of media nowadays. It's going to be more and more important to find ways to teach and explain to children about how these media systems more and more try to get their hooks in them.
Then again, that sorta goes back as far as one can look. There's always some sort of medium that becomes an aggressive capitalism machine marketing to children with precision.

Implore them to try and think about what actually makes prime valuable, and if they say anything related to status, ask them why that matters too. You can essentially just keep asking them to think about it until they hit the point where they can't throw out one word answers like "because it's cool" anymore ("what makes it cool?"), if needed you can even go into depth about it

I'm not smart enough to identify the specific mountain from the video, but if Mr. Beast & his crew were able to climb it, then it's definitely been climbed before. It's like if I climbed Mt. Everest & said "I now declare this the Walmart Peak," like?? NO, that's not how it works! I know his videos are meant for a young audience, but come on dude! the "Shopify mountain" thing disturbs me so much. While I've never had the privilege to go to Antartica myself, I've read many essays by the naturalist and writer Barry Lopez, who has traveled to the remotest parts of Antarctica. Lopez paints the surreal, sublime nature of the mountains of Antartica, and ponders on the nature and desire of human discovery, in a place that few go. And Mr. Beast has the opportunity to explore those wonderous, isolated landscapes, and what does he do? He reduces the entire experience to a glorified ad for some shitty company. Anyways, we live in a capitalist nightmare, and the appeal of Mr. Beast's content is a testament to that.

@@26349 I’m actually really happy you asked because it is a topic i’m very interested in.
So the water in London goes through a cycle: from the river Thames, to filtration, to our taps, and then back to filtration and then released to the Thames again. It might seem like a waste to filter it twice but that is how it’s done and it would be hard to change it now.
So then why is there chemical pollution in the River Themes? The water treatment facilities have limited space in them, and usually that is not a problem but when it gets filled it has to release at the risk of overflowing back to the houses. The main part of the problem is not that households use up too much water which causes an overflow, but the fact that our drains are also linked to this system. The drains i’m referring to are the rain water, so when it rains the clean water runs into the same sewage system as our waste and it is not divided. It would be better if the rain water was kept separate from our sewage but the system is an old one and it would take too long and cost too much to have it changed.
Water security and development is actually pretty interesting and it’s a good topic to have information about.
And a fun fact that totally disgusted me from my professor: there is something called ‘forever drugs’, these are found in antidepressants, and many other drugs. These forever drugs remain in the water forever because they cannot be filtered out, so when someone takes the medicine, they then pee it out, goes through filtration and back in taps, which someone might drink and then pee out again, a never ending cycle.

When I was in 6th grade there was a new set of lessons at my school about propaganda and advertising, where we were taught the different techniques used by marketing to try to influence people's decisions. One important part of the celebrity endorsement technique was that the celebrity drink/eat/use the item on camera because seeing another human consume or use something tells our subconscious that the item is safe to consume. (Celebrity demonstration is actually a different technique than when they talk about the product, talking about it is celebrity/expert testimonial.) If they look like they're having fun, even if it seems fake, it can convince the subconscious that whatever the product is will taste good or be enjoyable in some way. A very famous example is Eve eating the apple: her eating it in front of Adam convinced him that it was safe and enjoyable. (Also, Eve ate the apple in the first place because the snake fed her imagination ideas of what it could do for Adam, which was a sort of sideways testimonial technique.) I wish more people would have gotten those lessons that I got (and that more people might learn from the Adam and Eve story's core lesson of just not accepting someone else's word that something is good for you before consuming it). It seems like these days there are a LOT of unaware, uneducated consumers for marketers to use these techniques on.

Testimonial technique is double edged sword. At one side, you know some products are safe or at least enjoyable to you when you see others try it. It doesn't need to be an ads, it could be your friends or family reccomend something to you to try/buy. You subconsciously thought that these people know you and giving you a fairly reasonable reccomendation. Another example is review of the product. In this video, Pinely says that Prime taste like crap. We instantly know that Prime is crap and we shouldn't buy it, controversy aside. That's the example of review in a testimonial technique.
Problem was, sometimes the "review" or "reccomendation" is pushed like crazy and not honest. That's literally what happened with Prime, or most of popular product now.

I grew up during that time period as well, and now I have a 6 yr old son, and man, it's wild out there now.
Luckily for us, my spouse & I both worked in media for the past decade - I specifically used to write advertising. So there's no shortage of education here about advertising, promotions, and all the tricks people use to get you to want what they're selling. We closely monitor his media intake and provide guidance on these things. And yet it's still so easy for him to get carried away by a TH-camr's enthusiasm for a product/their merch, or a mobile game ad he saw on the drawing app on his tablet, etc.
I can only imagine what it's like in households where there isn't constant dialogue about this kind of thing, and/or media consumption isn't as closely monitored. It's actually low key horrifying to think about. And while yes we should do our part, I don't put ALL the blame on the parents - especially as I don't remember us getting these kind of discussion as kids. You don't know what you don't know.

Also I really wonder how long it is before more legislation comes, the whole "influencers must declare ads" has made a fair amount of impact in that most ads are much more upfront now, I wonder whether "integrated advertising" will be attacked, particularly by boomer legislators whose minds probably still work in TV ad breaks...

i didnt know Prime had that little sugar and with alot of sweeteners. So it's basically diet Gatorade huh. (Which is wierd, because the sugar is there for that quick energy you need when you are dehydrated after strenuous exercise/sports. But yes, the high extra sugar is there because without it, it taste like medicine, which I am assuming what Prime product cut out and the bare minimum sugar needed.)

    • @IneptRat

Here in the UK you literally can't find these anywhere for less than a fiver a bottle because they're "imported from America". I have a teenage brother and it makes me so angry that shops will sell these for tens or even hundreds of pounds when they know it's KIDS who want it. It's disgusting and honestly a choice. They have the money to have these readily available in the UK but they're choosing not to. It's fucked up that they're enabling this for publicity, shitting on their teenage fans in the meanwhile.

The fact that Prime claims to be gluten free but I can't find the old or new symbol for it or any other information so it still makes me hesitant. I have celiac, and I believe a lot of influencer food products can be very unsafe for people with any sort of eating restrictions (autoimmune disorders, allergies, intolerances, etc) due to how quick they are pushed out. Gluten is basically in so much that people are not aware of, even in trace amounts of specific flavorings and food colorings. It kills my body slowly to consume it, so I'm worried that the hype overshadows safety. I might try it to see if one puts my body through hell since I am a fairly sensitive celiac and the smallest amount of gluten makes me feel sick for a few days after consuming it while my body recovers.

    • @writingghost7795
      @writingghost7795 ปีที่แล้ว

@@krusher181 The only reason why I'm considering it is that I don't see the symbols for the GFCO, which is an organization that does independent testing for certifying things as gluten free. The FDA is extremely lacking in protections for safety, especially with how flavorings and food colorings are not typically said to be gluten free or not. An example is "caramel color" and how there are many variants of it. Some are gluten free, but others are not, so because the type is not specified, I have to consider the risk with consuming it.
I know Coke and Pepsi don't have the GFCO symbols, but they are big enough to get a massive lawsuit if they lied about being gluten free and smaller companies can just scrape by.
