- Back-compat support is a huge boon to Series X at launch - allowing us to revisit games going all the way back to the original Xbox. Auto HDR is a new mode on Series S and X that lets us enhance classic games - from Panzer Dragoon Orta, to Arkham Knight - that never received a true HDR option from the developers. How does it fare in practise? And does it always work across a wide spread of titles?

Microsoft’s efforts for game preservation and presenting it in the best possible way is amazing.
It's kind of overlooked how next gen you literally couldn't play a single 360 game on xbox one. Now you basically are keeping your entire library. Big upgrades to their process this time around
They better preserve their old games because they don't have new ones.

@@blumiu2426 PC doesn't really use HDR much. Not many HDR monitors out even now.
@@blumiu2426 - HDR implementation in games development has been much more forthcoming on consoles, rather than PC.
@@JoshuaKnab That's true, as I think the focus was elsewhere in improving graphics, but it should have been. It makes more sense than 4K, which is a gimmick.
@@christophercoey7804 As far as games including it that is true, but I've been using ReShade for graphic enhancements on top of what is in-game, which has an HDR feature. Some don't always work or show much of a difference depending, but there are options even if the game doesn't have it itself.
You guys should do more videos like this to show off games HDR implementation.

@@AnImperfectSoul I'm not talking about the Auto-HDR feature. I'm talking about HDR in general. Specifically the dev authored HDR in games. It's always gonna be different depending on the game.
@@14supersonic premiere does support HDR that well. There's tonnes of tone mapping issues and also capturing HDR content is a bit of a hassle.
@@pegasusdrive12 They literally just released a video completely in HDR across several different games. It's definitely not as difficult as you claim. Besides, they might not even be using premiere.

Geometry wars will look absolutely insane on OLED with all these tiny particles.
I'm on an LG OLED and it did! It looked insane. Batman not so much, not sure why he was so impressed. Some games looked over-baked.

This is the first game I have tested on every HDTV I've ever bought since 2009. I always loved the way the colors pop against the black background. Super fun game too!

This feature adds SO much value. The fact that it's already implemented this well before the console even launches suggests the integration will be solid. Hats off to Microsoft for improving older games.
The one issue I have with HDR videos is that there are never any comparison points. I can tell that things look different, but I’d really like to see a side by side comparison
Guess the best you can do is have two phones next to each other. One with HDR, one without. Or a TV and phone, etc. etc.
I just upgraded to a series s and there is a huge difference with how videos look, if you have a 4K display then it will look amazing
In a future update, I hope they enable a user option to enable/disable Auto-HDR on a per-title basis w/o going in and out of system settings to adjust the master toggle.

Seems like thats kinda how it works. You enable it and the xbox does it on games that microsoft has specifically tuned it for. Otherwise it does nothing. But yeah it would make sense maybe to have a further control when you can toggle it off for a game that while microsoft has enabled it you dont like it and can shut it off. Im sure this is something that gets tweaked and refined over time.
@@devsfan1830 that’s what I meant (but I worded it poorly initially).
For example:
Hover over the icon for a game that doesn’t work as well w/Auto-HDR (like Dark Souls 2 as mentioned in the video), use the application-specific menu in the Xbox UI to enable/disable Auto-HDR in that specific application w/o disabling the master toggle for Auto-HDR in the system settings altogether.

Right now that’s how it works. There are a few games that have hdr that look better without it. I have to go in and turn it off in the system settings every time.
With quick resume, going in and out shouldn't be a headache. You can access settings from in game but it will take you out. Id imagine its pretty painless on the x/s.
At this stage I don't even want to play my One X now and just wait for Series X. I just replayed Assassin's Creed 2, this would look amazing with auto HDR
I sold mine before its value drops. No point in keeping it around with SX's backwards compat.

Honestly PDO is the best looking back compatible enhanced OG Xbox game. It's gorgeous now on the Xbox One X. I miss those old SEGA dev teams! AM2, Hitmaker (AM3), Smilebit, Overworks, and Sonic Team to name a few.

Watched this on my iPhone 11 Pro and with my SDR TV and it made my TV look so bad. I'll have to watch again later when it's darker as that's when it truly shines (Pioneer Kuro).

You really need to see this on a very good spec HDR TV/monitor. Visuals really pop. 1440p@60fps +Ray tracing and HDR is going to look beautiful.
@ lol even the 3080 and 3090 have problems with ray-tracing 4k 60 maybe 1080p ray -tracing 60 ... I just got my first 4k 144 hrz monitor , with HDR 600 , not the best HDR but at least i have that option

I can not believe this game has not had a remaster. Or at least a optimized version. I'd love to play it again but its hard for me to play older games that haven't been "one x optimized". Since I've gotten so use to the high resolutions.

Although I’m getting a ps5, I have no shade toward Xbox, this is truly an amazing time for console gamers blue or green we all love games.
Just buy a XBOX SERIES X and PlayStation 5, like I'll do.
Just buy a PS5 and build or buy your own PC, AMD is announcing their lineup of desktop cpu's that should beat anything in the consoles. Not to mention the graphics cards announcements from both Nvidia & AMD

I tried the hdr mode on my tv and looked like the colors were lowered i like the dynamic more i stead the colors look more vibrant

As a 3d artist, HDR is best when you have objects with reflections, and use HDR of real environments and lighting.
Would prefer to see an actual comparison of autohdr. Show us images of old verses new.
For true comparisons, the video would have to support HDR and we'd all have to watch it on a HDR display.

@@DLBBALL Sorry, you're right it does support HDR when you press ⚙️. I watched it on my laptop which doesn't 🤦♂️.
Of course that would a lot of work in editing to try and get the tone mapping right when putting the SDR output into the HDR encode. I'm not sure you could ever guarantee it was an accurate comparison.
I'm watching this at 1080p60 HDR. This is absolutely beautiful. I see a lot of games I've played or seen before and they really do look so much better. Wish my tv had HDR support though. I'm watching this on my phone.

I just have to say, I am impressed with Microsoft. The back compat features add so much value and even if the hdr implementation doesn't always work well, I just love the option and would definitely play will it a lot if I would buy the console! I don't know, apart from the PC overlap, the series x becomes a must buy for me later this generation (Playstation first) when I can afford it, because it just gives me the ability to play xbox games from all generations in probably the nicest or if there is a pc version, second nicest way. What incredible value. Sony take note.
I think it's been clear since last gen Sony isn't focused on backwards near as much. With more people asking for new IPs, less sequels and pushing the new hardware, it makes sense. You can still play backwards, but not the best service compared to others. I don't care because I find emulators work best, especially when you add programs like ReShade. Gaming has been playing it too safe with just sticking to what works and sequels, reboots and not creating new games. Preserving the past is vital, but stagnating at the same time nullifies it. Besides, XBox it's easier to do backwards. They don't have two countries developing games. Nintendo and Sony do, so take that into consideration when backwards comes into play. It's a massive library Microsoft doesn't have to deal with, though Nintendo is the worst at preserving their games.
@@blumiu2426 Speaking of Nintendo, it’s sad how we went from the Wii (full GameCube back compat), to the Wii U (full Wii back compat), and now Switch (only select re-releases...)
@@DLBBALL As much as Nintendo sparks that nostalgia of classic game approach and great their handhelds are, they are a horrible company. Suing fans for making tribute games, threatening anyone with a rom site (not to pirate necessarily, but to preserve games Nintendo locks away or allows to disappear).
I've no idea why they aren't doing backwards at all with Switch, but I think part is they want to resell some? I don't know, they are a very hard company to figure out; you think they won't survived the next gen because of decisions, yet only a handful of games can keep them relevant and alive lol!
That's why I don't worry about Sony or XBox fading. If Nintendo can make it, they definitely won't be going anywhere. They'll just continue to make dumb decisions that sting for a bit, forgotten later.
@@blumiu2426 I actually think that Microsoft was tirelessly working on recovering from that early xbox one Fiasko and one way that fans always seem to appreciate is back compat. Sony got rid of it in their ps3 since it was too expensive for them but they see what Microsoft is doing and with the ps5 they are trying to also get some back compat going (to the ps4 at least). But I agree, games got a bit stale, too many remasters, remakes and sequels, even from soft following a Formula now. But I think there are still gems to be found like kingdom come deliverance with bold medieval realism, cd project red that never seems to want to publish a game on the same level as the last and omg I can't think of any others of the top of my head.... Let's hope that either this trend reverses at some point or that AAA will be largely defined by that but there will be a new AA market emerging for people like us who wanna see games that push the medium rather than regress.
@@blumiu2426 I think the portability of the switch is what gives them success nowadays. Having lived and worked in Japan now for almost 2 years, I can tell you that nintendo strikes me as a very very Japanese company. So rigid. Hard for original thought to do anything if it doesn't come from the top. Sony a bit less so, which is surprising, but the leg engineer is mark cerny, the legend, right? So that seems more like an international team creating the PlayStations while I would expect that the switch was made by a Japanese team. Don't know though, if you do, please tell!
I've been banging on to friends about the joys of HDR but just like VR unless you experience it for yourself you just can't understand how great it is.

lolol was thinking the same thing. Actually had no idea youtube allowed HDR uploads. Now i am spoiled. Next feature upgrade should be support for HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. At the moment, it appears that only HDR10 is supported. Still fantastic, even in its slightly compressed fashion.

They will probably after launch or closer to launch. For now, they only have a Series X to test.
If you are having issues with games getting overblown you might need to go into the xbox system settings and do calibrate hdr. The auto hdr system uses that for the settings since the games don't have it built in.

Auto HDR has come a long way. I use it on PC with the SDR game Final Fantasy 14 and the difference is incredible. It takes a little tweaking to go from too bright and gaudy to amazingly enhanced but once it's done it looks amazing permanently. At one point the snow capped hills of Coerthas were burning my eyeballs out it was so bright but it's easy to tune.

Windows on default has it so high, but owners of high end oled monitors need to just set the maximum nits to 1000 and minimum to 0

This is absolutely brilliant. Almost worth getting the console for this feature alone. I'm going to live in geometry wars. And I can imagine this feature will only get better with time. Especially when the back compact team eventually has a lighter work load and can go into specific games to tweak. Future is HDR bright 😎

I put this video on my TV, saw the HDR notification pop up... But then what? I don’t know what these games look like without HDR on or with HDR on. Is there no way to show off a direct comparison? Of course, apart from explaining it and I’ll take your word for it, this video shows me absolutely nothing. I don’t go around being negative but I have to leave a comment to say that a large part of what this video should’ve been doesn’t exist.
Um, how about getting an HDR capable display? You will kinda need one if you're planning on getting the Series X.
@@nonyabusiness6084 I’ll clarify what I meant when I said I saw the HDR notification appear on my TV. I have a 55” LG C8. I own a PS4 Slim, Nintendo Switch and a Gaming PC, have a PS5 preordered and don’t plan on buying a Series X. I’ve also played plenty of games with and without HDR and basically every new game on my PS4, God of War, Doom Eternal, AC Odyssey, Ghost of Tsushima etc. has HDR as if it’s the new normal.
Here’s the deal:
Auto-HDR sounds like a great feature and I’m interested to see how it works, it also immediately sounds like a cool feature that will not work anywhere near as flawlessly as normal HDR. My problem is, he’s nice enough explaining it, and I know I’m seeing HDR gameplay on my screen, but I still have no idea how good it is. Where are the direct comparisons? Sorry to sound like a snob, but show me Arkham Knight without the HDR and then with the Auto-HDR. What good is showing random pieces of gameplay that, even when you know you’re seeing something different, you’re physically unable to understand the difference, unless you’ve got Arkham Knight’s natural colour scheme memorised in your head or something. The point of a video is to show, and this video completely failed on that part. I still don’t really know if Auto-HDR is a game-changer or a gimmick.
First HDR video I watch on TH-cam on an OLED and it definitely looks good !
Look up some '8K' HDR videos to see how good your screen can get (after some basic calibration). They're not displayed in 8K of course but the quality is so good that there's no compression visible from normal viewing distance.
Series X is the way to go this gen.
Just started replaying the Gears Of War series. The 1st one remaster was good but i thought it would ruin 2 and 3 for me. Not so, once i discovered how to switch to HDR and enhanced FPS. They hold up amazingly with the upgrades.
I am sure they will tweak this but damn am I impressed with the tech. Way to go MS!
Man, I just launched Halo 5 on my series x and I thought it had been updated for series. Had to plug in my one x in the same tv and switch inputs to find out what was up. Eventually realized it was auto HDR. It made a HUGE difference in halo 5, the game looks fenomenal.
Its borderline criminal how Arkham Knight still hasn't had any X or Pro support. But yeah some of these look very nice and as a big Panzer Dragoon fan its nice to see it there and hopefully the likes of Sega's classic games allow you to use it as well

Digital Foundry I love you but for the love of God INCLUDE COMPARISONS. I can't believe you guys didn't show any non-HDR footage so we could tell the difference. I have an HDR compatible OLED and I regularly use HDR but I've never really been sure of the difference. Really hoped this would clarify things more.

I'm looking forward to playing through some of my backlog of xbox one and 360 games on the series X. I'll be playing through Blood and Wine and Hearts of Stone 60fps mode first and then Fallen Order after that.

Man that dynamic 900p resolution and xbox one graphic settings. Now i remember why i stopped playing the batman game immediately.
Weird, since Arkham Asylum and Arkham City sold millions of copies, despite having lower resolutions and less detail. (720p max)

I’m curious about Arkahm City since that was patched in the Arkham City Update.
Not even kidding, the very first game I'm going to play on the Series X is the original Mass Effect. It's my "big test" to see if Microsoft weren't kidding around with all that "your games will look and run better" talk, both for the frame rate and to test out Auto HDR (assuming it isn't one of the titles where Microsoft has disabled it). Auto HDR is something that's interested me ever since it was announced. I think I just like the idea that they can retrofit HDR into games that were released before HDR was a thing.
Side note, the TH-cam app on the Xbox One X doesn't support HDR. Huh...
Mass Effect Trilogy are possibly my favorite games ever made. Better story & characters than any Sci-Fi movie I have ever seen. Then again I'm not really a Sci-Fi fan.
Definitely buying Xbox Series X, I already know what exactly I'm getting out of it. Ps5 is like a mystery ill let someone else be a genius to tell me how it is to perform lol.

It's peaking at 900p, not 1080p unfortunately. The original Xbox One was terrible. A One X patch would have been sweet.
I wouldn't say it's terrible but even dynamic res up to 1080p would have made a big difference. But b/c it's a dark game, it's not as noticeable as it could've been. The thing that always bothered me the most with Arkham Knight was the insane pop-in when you're gliding or driving around in the Batmobile. This wasn't as big an issue in the PS4 given the faster memory... with Series X having an SSD & GDDR6 memory, I'm pretty sure that pop-in will be largely eliminated. But yeah, it's a damn shame that we never got a 4k patch. It's a stunning game, even to this day & would've looked amazing at higher resolutions.
I’d gladly pay for a series x patch at this point, they seem reluctant to do anything further to it though for some reason. They can’t be fully satisfied with how it launched.
@@SabatSch95 I was just talking about the hardware itself, doing native 1080p in 2013 was way more feasible than doing native 4K today. The fact that XboxOne compromised better GPU/CPU to package Kinect with the console thus making most multiplatform titles up until 2017 look worse than on PS4 was dissapointing.
The game was actually patched some time later to run at something like 1620x1080. It’s covered in one of the last Arkham Knight videos.
@@vrubayka Agreed, and in oft related point, AC Unity most likely was not patched up from 900p to 1080p on the PS4 like the previous AC, Black Flag, because MS was mad and paid Ubisoft off to NOT do Unity in 1080p on the PS4. Lol. I half joke because Unity was initially a mess for both consoles, and Ubisoft probably either did up it to 1080p on PS4 and had even more problems on that console or they didn't even bother because it was hard enough running it at 900p.
Sounds like a feature that should be off by default and done on a game to game basis as the results will be better whiles not getting complaining from gamers that don't mess about with these kinds of settings and just wants the game to work.
I'm also wondering, on the PC with mod packs, don't many of them do a kind of HDR lighting mode with many games? I'm sure I heard they do something like that with many mode packs that mess about with the lighting.

I have a ISF calibrated LG Oled 65CX and xbox one x. With Nvidia Shield Pro 2019'model playing Metro Exodus on GeForce Now with all settings to it's highest, 1080p with the new 4K AI Upscaling method on it's butter smooth. Looks like native 4K/60fps. It's unreal how good game streaming is in it's current state. Looks like playing on a huge beast PC with no lag. Even though i am getting the Xbox Series X and PS5 i am getting Cyberpunk 2077 om Geforce Now instead. With the ray tracing it's going to be next level incredible!!!
Regardless of how you feel about this, having an option to toggle HDR on and off is always a good thing.

@Callum O'connor I havent own a P.S. since PS2 and Im getting a Series X and PS5, but if you're gonna compare the Series S to the PS5 you'll clearly compare it to the digital which is only $100 more and will perform better in every way.

I’m watching this on an iPhone 11 Pro Max, which I think has an HDR screen. I’m not the most savvy in this field, so I don’t exactly know what looks great or terrible (except the dark souls gameplay for sure), but I love that they’re doing this.

I can understand people getting excited over new consoles but personal attacks on people just for having an informed opinion is never ok.

Since GamePass and the Series X hands on impressions, what hate are you talking about exactly? They only thing that's staggering them are exclusive titles. Everything else is winning for them so far.
I agreed in 2013 when Don Mattrick was leading Xbox off to the grave, but since Phil Spencer took over he spent years digging them out of that hole. I don't understand why people are still so vicious about it. Looks to me like Phil and Xbox are finally almost done digging out, and the future looks amazing for Xbox. I truly feel the 9th generation of gaming is going to be something special.

Wow. I'd never seen my phone go into HDR mode before. It burned out my eyes.
I was really hoping that control would launch with HDR support, but it did not. Hoping DF would cover control with Auto HDR. that game is perfect.
Hdr is even more impressive than 4k is its hard to go back once you play games on a decent 10bit hdr telly... Basically a Samsung q70r or higher telly anything less and it's probably not true hdr.
The Q70R only has 48 dimming zones.
This will be another fun feature to play with. I like having options like this and its good you can turn it on or off.
HDR on an OLED has to be seen to be believed. Could never touch a gaming monitor again.

At first, I just didn't get all the hoopla over HDR because games just looked dark more than anything but over time, some games came out with it and it wasn't so dark or bothersome and looked downright beautiful. Looking at u, Death Stranding ;) That game is truly a mesmerizing sight to behold.
Xbox are on point this generation. Can't wait for the tenth.

@Cptn_Avery Game streaming, Game Pass, 120hz modes for some MP games, PC games, back compat, powerful console with cheaper option, multiple studio acquisitions. Looking good for this gen and I don't know about you, but I have a backlog of last gen games to finish. It's nice to know that they will look and possibly play better.

@@spenny2cents thanks, yeh I was in best buy and they said the 65s were on sale and they were out of stock so ended up ordering the 55 instead, I wasn't entirely happy with it but yesterday I saw they got more so I went and just paid the difference and now got a 65 coming I a week or so....very happy!

I'm so glad that more people get to enjoy it now with the price of those Oleds going down, and the new consoles nearing high end pc's.
I've had a Lg65C7 since early 2017, and it's been the best upgrade I have done in years. Yes a 980ti/1080ti could barely run all games on 4k ultra back then, but with some tweaking...a Good ultra 1440p HDR game destroys the console games.
I love my Xbox one X and Ps4 pro, and they do look good on my OLED, but combining a OLED with HDR games is a better upgrade than going from an standard console to the "pro" variants. I'm lucky that I invested early on, and saved the money to buy high end gpu's.
I remember booting BF5 on Dolby Vison with some friends at my house, we played for hours and hours, stopping to enjoy the visuals, and since then I really have a new found respect for game developers, the amount of hard work and detail to put into these worlds is insane, so stopping to appreciate that happens more and more with an Oled, because our tech at home is not holding their vision back anymore. When my new home is finished building, a 3080 with a HDMI2.1 Oled is the next step.
(I owned a QLED too, had the Oled at the same time to compare side by side for two weeks, and just for my taste and daytime lit room I returned the Qled, the black levels are just so good, I don't need the extra brightness of Qled. My screen is professional calibrated, and looking at the sun ingame makes me want to put on shades just like real life would. And to see so much detail in a dark tunnel, with some ambient lights is just on another level compared to the bleeding effect of other panels, I own a 144hrz ultra wide for my competitive gaming).

Nice video, would be perfect to see the SDR image next to the HDR, I literally don't remember how half of that games looked, I can't say if is better or no so at the end I'm not impressed.
Got to give Xbox props, I still think PS5 will outsell the Xbox but I not sure which console will now be the best regarless of sales.
Best? Neither, just play the games you like on the console that supports them. The Switch outsold the Xbox despite releasing years later, it’s always been about the games and not the power but we live in a generation where numbers are thrown around by companies to entice sales. 1080p, 4K and now 8k. It reminds me of Gillette who just kept adding additional blades, it gets ridiculous. A 1080p BLU Ray still offers superb picture quality, do we need 8K. Will an additional 2TF on the series X matter?! Do most of us really see these tiny minute things that sites like DF talk about? It’s all gone crazy. I will stick with Sony because of my existing game library, Microsoft are finally off their ass and doing something, Nintendo will continue doing their thing. There’s no best, there’s just a great time to be a gamer.

@@billpogi23 Bought a Ps2 before Xbox, then bought a 360 before ps3, then bought, Ps4 before xbox one, so definitely not biased. Now this a difficult decision. I'm not mad about 3rd person single player games so from my perpective, honestly I cant find any reasons to get the PS5 first. With that in mind i might be missing something 🤔 I happy for you to underline the benefits of getting a PS5 first.
