4th of July Cheese Log-A fun cheese log or dip that’s deliciously sweet for a holiday celebration!

- 4th of July Cheese Log
8 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
1 stick butter, room temperature
1 1/2 cups Funfetti cake mix, dry
2 Tablespoons sugar
1/2 cup powdered sugar
patriotic jimmies
Animal Crackers, vanilla wafers, graham crackers, fruit, etc for serving
In a mixing bowl, add the cream cheese and butter. Mix on medium speed until combined.
Add the cake mix and sugars. Beat until well mixed.
Lay out on a large piece of plastic wrap. Shape the mixture into a log (or a ball) and place in the middle of the wrap.
Wrap the log (or ball) tightly once it has been completely shaped and cover completely. Place in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours or the freezer for 30 minutes.
Pour the patriotic jimmies onto a shallow pan or plate. Unwrap the cheese log (or ball) and roll in the jimmies, covering it completely.
Transfer to a serving dish and serve with your choice of wafers, crackers, fruit, etc.
NOTE: The CDC recommends spreading raw cake flour onto a parchment paper lined baking sheet and baking in a 350 degree oven for five minutes to eliminate any possible contamination or raw flour taste.

This is the first recipe I've seen for a dessert cheese log. Novel and, as Melissa pointed out, adaptable to any occasion's gathering.

I'm not a fan of super sweet treats but when you mentioned tasting similar to a cake-pop I just knew my " sweet loving " girl friends would like it. Since my local dollar store carries Funfetti cake mix I will be creating this today for Monday's get together. Thank you Tom and Melissa for a quick/easy recipe I can make on this 109 degree day. 😘

Isn't a person not supposed to consume raw flour from the cake mix box?? Just wondering?
We have never had a problem consuming the unbaked cake mix, but the CDC does recommend spreading the cake mix on a parchment paper lined baking sheet and baking it in a 350° oven for five minutes. This would eliminate any raw flour taste or possibility of contamination. We have never done that and have never had a problem, but if you have concerns about the raw flour, you should do it.
I often measure the cake mix, put 1/2 in a bowl and 1/2 in a ziplock and make 12 cupcakes or a one layer cake With 1/2 the ingredients.

I'm going to make this. For my peanut butter/chocolate loving son, I'm going to try a peanut butter brownie version by substituting a half cup of peanut butter for the stick of butter, brownie mix instead of Funfetti cake mix, and mini chocolate chips rather than jimmies for the outer layer. This looked yummy but I was concerned about eating the raw cake mix powder so I looked it up. The research I found said that the raw flour in a cake mix is not safe to eat. 😢

Where did you get your sprinkles? Kids would absolutely love this! This would be great with other cake mixes with pearl sanding sugar or mini chocolate chips. You could even fix this in other colors for baby showers. Love the tip on rolling this!! Thanks!!

We've only ever made it this way, but I think it would be okay to reduce it or use a sugar substitute.

Beautiful for the 4th of July table!!! I always make a red white and blue cake. White icing, strawberries and blueberries for stars and stripes. Trick is dry off your fruit completely!!! It will be beautiful on any 4th of July table!!! God Bless!!!!!!!

Someone may have asked this, but .... why couldn't we put a bunch of jimmies into the creamcheese/sugar mix before refrigerating? the red/white/ and blue would be throughout the whole log?
Hello you guys. This looks so beautiful and yummy. I am going to make this for Mandela day. It is in late July and on this day we do something for the community for 27 minutes to honor our first democratic president, Nelson Mandela who we affectionately refer to as Madiba.❤
The 27 minutes for Madiba represents the 27 years he spend in jail under the previous Apartheid regime. ❤You can do any type of outreach and it can take longer, but everyone is encouraged to give that time and make a difference in someone's life. Last year I donated blood. Not yet sure what I'll do this year. Let me know if you have any suggestions. ❤❤

For an FYI, i do want to mention that it is not good to ingest "uncooked" flour, I don't want anybody to become ill because our body cannot process flour well, it is hard on the digestive system.

I have a friend that makes this but uses crushed vanilla wafers for the topping instead of sprinkles. She serves various cookies with it along with some fresh fruit such as strawberries and apples. I'm going to tell her about the sprinkles and share your video with her. She might want to liven it up for the holidays.

We'd probably make two so it would be easier to handle and roll in the jimmies and plate. But you could certainly do it either way. It's a fun dessert and looks great on a holiday table.

Hello Tom & Melissa - this looks very festive. We like cheese balls but I never make mine like a normal cheese ball shape either. I line my bowl with the Saran Wrap then whatever is going on top of my cheese ball gets in first & right up the shallow edge of the bowl. Usually chopped Pecans. Depends on what flavor of cheese ball . Then add & smooth out the creamed cheese until it is packed & leveled out then bring the plastic wrap up on it. It then goes inside the refrigerator to set up. Then to serve it I open the plastic wrap & turn my serving plate or platter upside down on the cheeseball & flip it over & remove the plastic wrap. I then add my different crackers, or whatever we are having with it. But me cheese ball it totally covered in the pecans it is about an inch thick but huge in size. My cheeseball is about plate sized. So everyone gets toppings in every check they cut off. Enjoy your weekend & the upcoming Week. Thanks for sharing your festive cheese log. 👏👏👏💕🌻
