I’m in Canada and have made thousands of butter tarts for restaurants over the years and am known as the Queen of butter tarts . Mine are similar in ingredients however method is different. As a Canadian it’s fun to see you enjoying a favourite dessert of ours. 🇨🇦
Hello Tom & Melissa- this is a great looking recipe. I have never had a Canadian Butter tart. But they look delicious. Thank you for sharing this recipe with everyone. Have a Blessed Week you two 🙏👏👏👏💕🌻
I have used the back of the muffin tins for tarts, but didn't get the bottoms of the tarts completely flat, so i feel it would be important to get the tops of the upside down crusts completely flat, if that makes sense. If I make this, I will cover the back of muffin pans with the pie crust, cover the whole pan with one sheet of waxed paper, then set a flat cookie sheet on the waxed paper and press down very lightly. Remove cookie sheet and waxed paper before baking.
We really do think these are great! We are humbled to have a "Queen" watching our channel. Queen of Butter Tarts has a very nice ring to it! Good for you! 😊
The morning I was married, mom was too busy to make breakfast, helping me finish the bouquets, so dad showed excellent executive sense and went to their local restaurant and brought back the Proprietor's gooey butter tarts go with our coffee! Yum!
🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦 i’m Canadian and these are one of my all-time favorite desserts. My mom made zillions of these all the time and I have made so many of these over the years so many times they just melt in your mouth and they are so good so glad you are doing this recipe and I’m sure that everybody is going to love it. I hope everyone tries these. They are so yummy.
No vinegar lemon juice is great as it enhances the flavor gives it such a fresh taste. I also use vanilla paste instead of vanilla extract that I make myself. Also, I use pecans instead of walnuts and I also add raisins but not a whole lot because if you add too many, it becomes overwhelming, I hope this helps you
@Sueloon thank you. 😊 I love lemon, but I'm not sure I want them in my butter tarts. Just by going with the taste from what I tried from the Canadian bakery. It was more pecan pie flavored, without the pecans. I have never tried it with raisins, but I bet it is delicious as well. Definitely will try in my next batch. Speaking of vanilla paste, how much would you use in place of vanilla extract? I'm currently making my own vanilla extract for the very first time, which started in August. I didn't know you could make your own vanilla paste. I'm going to have to check that out! 😀
I’m Canadian and these were a regular feature at special events during my childhood. My mom made them with raisins and walnuts. Love them any which way. These days they mainly seem to come from the grocery store but nothing beats home made. 🇨🇦
The ones our friends brought us were store made and so good we wanted to recreate them at home and you are so right, anything homemade is always better!
My husband is 71 years old and when he was a boy, his family went on a fishing trip to Canada every year. They always bought butter tarts when they were there and he loved them. I tried this recipe and we both loved them. Our church has a 15 minute break between Sunday school and church and we always have coffee and a snack in that time. Today was my turn to bring the snack and I made these tarts. They were a big hit, everyone loved them!
Thank you. We have been collecting these ideas for a while now and we thought we'd try out the Traveling Tuesday idea in October since it's a month with five Tuesdays. We hope everyone enjoys it as much as we are enjoying creating this series.
I had an Aunt on my Father's side who made miniature Pecan Pie Tarts. These are exactly what I remember my Aunt making for every Holiday dinner until she died years ago.
There is nothing more peaceful than being surrounded by water. I felt like we should have added a five-minute clip of the water for anyone who wanted to just enjoy it's beauty for a little bit. Appreciating the enormity and beauty of the ocean is truly is a refreshing way to soothe my soul.
I just love the example you both are to everyone as to what a loving, respectful and faithful couple is in Christ. I do love the video recipes as well!! Keep up the good work! Be blessed❤️
I think me and my husband would like these if they’re similar to pecan pies. Thank you. I’m going to like having an extra day with you and Melissa. Blending forks are wonderful. 🙏🏻❤️
Thank you, Lady Smith. We have been so excited to do this series on our vacation. We hope everyone enjoys the videos. We appreciate you SO MUCH! I always look forward to your comments!
I got such a smile out of this video. We raised our children in Chatham and we had a saying there. No matter where you go in the world you always end up meeting someone from Chatham Ontario. lol you proved it again. Also love butter tarts. Some also put coconut in them. Delicious. Love your videos.
We have yet to travel to Chatham to visit our friends. We usually just meet up with them on a trip adventure but the Butter Tart Trail in northern Ontario sounds like an adventure in and of itself. So we might need to go visit them at home and follow the trail. Love things like that. We walked 12 miles once in Seattle following a Donut trail and sampling goodies along the way. That was a blast and I'm confident that after all that walking, we had used up the calories consumed in donuts!
@@comesitatmytable9044 The Butter Tarts sound wonderful. A recipe for the holidays. Did you enjoy Seattle? I'm from the east side of Washington State but love visiting Seattle when given the chance. Especially the warf and Pike's Street Market.
I live in Arizona six months and in British Columbia, Canada for six months, every year. So I'm not a native Canadian but the thought of pecans in my butter tarts is a no no. I will though try your version since it is so similar to my recipe. (but without the pecans ) 🥰
We really appreciate that you faithfully watch. We are excited to try this five Tuesdays in October series where we recreate something great we enjoyed on vacation. We've been working on this for quite a while and felt like October was the perfect time to try it out. We hope everyone enjoys it as much as we are enjoying creating it. That Butter dough is my favorite of all the doughs. I make a dessert using it. They are likely culinary cousins, with UK tarts being one of the major influences in the development of Canadian butter tarts. Other related recipes include treacle tart, the French/Quebecois tarte au sucre, pecan pie, and shoo-fly pie.
❤Yes Yes Yes Im gonna try these. When I was little my grandma made her own pecan pies and they were great yes...but me being her only grandchild...spoiled...I told her that I wished she could make one without pecans. I just wanted the crust and the goo. So she made it. She only did it 3 times. But I felt very special And the last time she made it I took some maple syrup and drizzled on my piece. Shes been gone 25 years now. I miss her.Miss the pie. Im gonna make this and try with and without pecans too. Thanks for sharing and God bless each person on here. ❤Melanie in Ga.
Oh Melanie I can hear in your voice how much you miss her. We hope making this recipe will bring back even more precious memories of her for you. And I hope you had no storm damage. Helene was a heartbreaker.

My Mom's pastry was just the best, one I've tried but can't replicate! So at Xmas she used her pastry to make butter tarts! Yummy, just the absolute best!! I've used Tenderflake pastry to make mine, very good, great alternative!!
No one can cook or bake like our mom. Grandmother's cooking is even more impossible to replicate. We gave up long ago, but we do think these sweet little pastries are great. We hope you will consider giving them a try sometime. Thank you so much for watching our channel.
Hello. How did you all fair with hurricane Helene? I'm in Portsmouth Ohio and we had some flooding. Glad you seem ok. Have fun on your cruise. Can't wait to see the new series 😊🎉😊
Made these yesterday. Have to be the best dessert I've ever stuck in my mouth!!! Don't eat more than one tho! They are so sweet and rich the second one almost made me sick. I can't thank you enough for the recipe! Love your channel. Watch everyday and always refer to your recipes in case I need it. I'm going to try to send you an email or Messenger on FB. 💓

I have Canadian friends who came to my home for Thanksgiving. I wanted to make something that they were familiar with as well as having typical USA foods. A butter tart recipe was given to me. My children fell love with the and ask for them some times.
I have watched your videos and you have great recipes. I decided to watch your butter tart recipe as I am Canadian. Was very surprised to see this show as I live very close to Chatham. The tarts look delicious. I love the pecans or walnuts but raisins are good too.
Hello, Nana. Thank you so much for being with us at the table and enjoying these wonderful butter tarts through our video. I sure hope you are having a fantastic Saturday morning.
Isn't it funny how strongly some people feel about the addition or absence of the pecans and/or raisins. I tend to prefer the plain ones, but Tom's favorites had the pecans. We didn't make any with raisins this time.
In our family my grand mother used raisins and walnuts ! But you can adjust to what you like I personally just love raisins but pecans would be good ! A definite Canadian favorite Eh! Can eat any time of day even better ! Live in southern Ontario never turn down any kind of butter tart ! Thanks for sharing a Canadian favorite!
These sorta remind me of a pie my mom used to make and it was called poor man's pie. All that was in it was brown sugar, whipping cream and butter. She would make it on holiday's it was soooo good. These look great!
Your mom's pie sounds great, too. We really did enjoy these little tarts. Thank you so much for being with us at the table. Hope you are having a great afternoon.
As a long time Canadian, I have never had a butter tart with raisins. Usually they have currents or pecans. I personally prefer pecans. They are truly delicious!
Mmmm, you had me at BUTTER! These are so yummy and sweet and a perfect size so one does not feel too guilty treating themselves lol! I have tasted these on my Canadian layovers back in my travel days with the airline. Really great job, Tom! I do miss a good sweet butter tart and now I can bake them with your terrific recipe! God bless you both ❤
Oh my goodness! How did I miss this video!! Those look fabulous!! I’ll definitely be making these for Thanksgiving!! Thank you Tom and Melissa!! I always try to make one new dish for every Thanksgiving, from a salad, to a side dish, to an appetizer or maybe a new dessert; you made the decision easy for me this year!!!❤❤😊😊
I hope he loves them as much as we do. The pastry part is so light and flaky and the filling in the middle is fabulous! Thank you so much for watching our channel.
Love your idea for a new series! I watch a few You Tube channels on cruising and my first thought was "they're on a cruise!" So glad to hear you guys went on an adventure together. You guys rock. I love your videos. I watched a few of them yesterday, so I'm not sure which one this was in, but I want to commend you for gently encouraging your viewers to join a church family and regularly attend worship services. May God continue to bless you. A sister in Christ from Michigan. =)
Thank you, Cheryl, for watching our channel and being so encouraging. We really do appreciate it. I don't know what we would do without our faith and church family. We like to encourage others to have the same joy in their lives. We get such pleasure from traveling and seeing new places in the world. It's a great blessing to us to be able to visit someplace new. We are so happy to have you at the table with us. Have a great evening.
Those look amazing! Might have to be nice to my husband just this one time and make him these 😉😆 Thanks for sharing the video and looking forward to more recipes you have found on your travels!
Yum! These look amazing! I love anything with maple syrup… well actually, I love anything sweet, much to my doctor and glucose meters distress. Looks like a great holiday recipe. Thanks again for a wonderful recipe.
Last year when I made pecan tarts, I found toasted decimated coconut at Publix. I added it and they were really good. I also use the toasted coconut when I make Laura Bush's cowboy cookies. I gotta try these though. I need to lose weight and it's hard when you like baking.
Hello Tom & Melissa! I was so thrilled when you mentioned your good friends are from Chatham, Ontario, as that is where I am from! I love Butter Tarts pretty much any way! 😋 They're such decadent treat. Thank you for sharing this recipe with us! God Bless you all! ❤🇨🇦
Shawn and Cristina are so much fun. We love spending time with them. Friendships forged during traveling is one of the great blessings of the entire trip. We are so happy they shared these treats with us. Thank you so much for watching our channel and we hope you will enjoy this recipe soon.
Butter tarts are awesome! My mom would make them every Christmas, never with nuts, just raisins. I married a kiwi and introduced my hubby to them . He loves them- doesnt everyone. So now im obligated to make them at least once a year. So easy to make too.
They are a delightful treat, and we thought they were pretty easy to put together. Thank you so much for joining us for this extra video. We appreciate you so much.
Canadian here. You’re right about the controversy around butter tart fillings. I make them. My family happens to love raisins so I put that in many. Sometimes, I just put the filling in. And I have added chopped walnuts. Pretty simple. If adding any extras, sprinkle them in the bottom, then add filling. My filling recipe is very close to yours
These look delicious! When adding vinegar or lemon juice to crust, if you add it to the water instead of into the bowl, it will distribute evenly and you'll add just enough.
I am originally from Ontario Canada but now I’m in British Columbia Canada. I grew up eating butter tarts and had them with raisins, pecans, walnuts and on occasion only with the goo or goo and coconut if my mom was out of nuts or raisins. I’m not a raisin lover but I like raisins in butter tarts. I find the tart filling very sweet so I don’t put sugar in the crust and I use shortening instead of butter. I’ve used maple syrup or agave for the liquid sweeter but I’ve never used corn syrup like my mother. Instead of a pecan tart I’ve made pecan squares and for those I have used light brown sugar and butter in my crust a little different from my tarts. I guess it’s more of a shortbread crust for the squares. The squares are good served warm with ice cream and a tad of whipped cream.
Love to watch your videos, have you ever thought about giving cooking classes? You explain things so well. I have been cooking for years ( I’m 68 ) but I learn something every time I watch a video. I look forward to the new videos. ❤

PLEASE let us know what you think! And we are so glad to have you join us this month for Traveling Tuesdays. We think it will be fun to try to recreate some foods we have enjoyed on trips this year. We hope our viewers enjoy this five Tuesdays series as much as we are going to in creating them.
Good job they look wonderful
Oh those look fantastic, love the pastry that you made and that filling I could drink from a cup haha.
I have a recipe that came from Wales in the 1800's with my husband's great grandmother for a taffy tart that is basically the same recipe.
A taffy tart from Wales sounds great. We'd enjoy those, too, I'm guessing.
I'd love to try a taffy tart recipe.
They are likely culinary cousins, with UK tarts being one of the major influences in the development of Canadian butter tarts. Other related recipes include treacle tart, the French/Quebecois tarte au sucre, pecan pie, and shoo-fly pie.
Ooh love love butter tarts! I live in Alberta
They are so nice. We have very much enjoyed creating these at home.
But I felt very special
And the last time she made it I took some maple syrup and drizzled on my piece.
@@comesitatmytable9044 no Im in Georgia and just lost power for a bit and had some large limbs down. But alot of my my good friends are in Asheville and Black Mountain. Alot of sadness ans heartbreak. Yes. Gotta keep praying its weighing on my heart really bad.
The time I ate two in a seating I felt the same. Tea, coffee or a glass of cold milk go great!😍🇨🇦
They are delicious but you are right; they are very rich. We are fans of a glass of milk with something so sweet. We look forward to hearing from you.
I had never heard of these and now I have seen 2 videos for them in the same day! I think it’s a sign that I need to make them. 😁😁
Gemma on Bigger Bolder Baking popped up with these hours after yours.
I have Canadian friends who came to my home for Thanksgiving. I wanted to make something that they were familiar with as well as having typical USA foods. A butter tart recipe was given to me. My children fell love with the and ask for them some times.
They really are delicious. We were so pleased with how these turned out.
I have watched your videos and you have great recipes. I decided to watch your butter tart recipe as I am Canadian. Was very surprised to see this show as I live very close to Chatham. The tarts look delicious. I love the pecans or walnuts but raisins are good too.
Can’t wait to try the new tarts….as Tom said Yumo!
Yumo sums it up nicely. We hope you enjoy these as much as we do.
Awesome they look delicious
Great job and
Great cook thank you for sharing
OK bye bye Nana
Hello, Nana. Thank you so much for being with us at the table and enjoying these wonderful butter tarts through our video. I sure hope you are having a fantastic Saturday morning.
So delicious 😋Yours and Rachel Cooks With Love are the best channels. Thank you for sharing your cooking talent with us ❤ Your videos are amazing 🎉
Thank you so much for the kind words. We really do appreciate that you are watching our channel.
WOW several pro's and con's on the pecans and raisins. Interesting opinions.😮
Isn't it funny how strongly some people feel about the addition or absence of the pecans and/or raisins. I tend to prefer the plain ones, but Tom's favorites had the pecans. We didn't make any with raisins this time.
This looks so yummy, love the crust
We make pecan tarts at Christmas time and they are a hit for family and friends!
These are very similar. So good! We appreciate that you are at the table with us.
You are so welcome. We really appreciate our Canadian viewers, and we are delighted to start this five Tuesday series with this great treat!
Mmmmm aren't they so delicious!! Enjoy!!! I'm an hour away from Chatham, Ontario. I live in London, Ontario
I will definitely try the Canadian Butter Tarts! Thank you for researching to find a recipe to share.
You are so welcome! We hope you will enjoy them as much as we did.
I love traveling Tuesdays. Also love learning about different foods of their vacations.❤
Doesn't sound like "Poor Man's Pie". Lol
As a long time Canadian, I have never had a butter tart with raisins. Usually they have currents or pecans. I personally prefer pecans. They are truly delicious!
I usually see raisin or walnut ones.
We can only go by what Shawn and Cristina have told us. But we think the ones we have had so far have been a wonderful treat!
@@comesitatmytable9044 They’re all good!
These Canadian Butter Tarts look so good! I must try this recipe!☀️☀️☀️
We hope you do. We really enjoyed them. Thank you so much for being at our table.
These look so good. I have to try these. Thank you both for sharing this.
They really are delicious. We hope you will try them soon. It's great having you at the table with us.
Love the new traveling with …..lol
These looked so yummy and I'm voting for Golden Raisins or plain. I like nuts but some textures the nuts seem to dominate. Great video. 👍
Those look really good!
I have made them and they are delicious! I like pecans in mine.
I love knowing that, Frances! Thanks for letting us know. I really like pecans in mine too.
Now i love that mixing bowl!
I always try to make one new dish for every Thanksgiving, from a salad, to a side dish, to an appetizer or maybe a new dessert; you made the decision easy for me this year!!!❤❤😊😊
Coconut and peacons are amazing coming from canada
Thanks for a Tuesday recipe, three day's a week is not enough!!
Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful treat with me. My son loves pecan pie and I plan to make this and send them to him for Christmas.
I hope he loves them as much as we do. The pastry part is so light and flaky and the filling in the middle is fabulous! Thank you so much for watching our channel.
Your making my mouth water. Gonna have to make these but without the pecans.
My mother=in-law made these and she called them Pecan tossies. Very good. Thank you for reminding of her.
This will be a fun series. Those tarts look amazing (and rich). Thank you for taking us along on your travels
Last year when I made pecan tarts, I found toasted decimated coconut at Publix. I added it and they were really good. I also use the toasted coconut when I make Laura Bush's cowboy cookies. I gotta try these though. I need to lose weight and it's hard when you like baking.
I think you mean desiccated coconut.😊
@cynthiafisher9907 yes. 😆
I make butter tarts all the time. I have never tried this recipe. I will have to try them.
I have always wanted to try Canadian butter tarts 🙌🙌
We sure hope you will give these a try. We think they are delicious.
These look great- thanks for sharing! We should have had lunch- I'm only about an hour from Galveston! Have fun and be safe!
I'm definitely going to try this.😊
My dad made these a lot but he always added raisins. That's the way his family made them. He was from Ontario, Canada
I'm Canadian they look great. Going to try to make them...
Looks delicious.
I plan to make these Canadian Tarts
I am going to make mince meat tarts too
Thanks for sharing your video
God Bless
Those look so-o good. Another winner. Thanks
We really do appreciate that you are watching. We hope you enjoy these as much as we do.
Those look wonderful 😊
These look delicious! When adding vinegar or lemon juice to crust, if you add it to the water instead of into the bowl, it will distribute evenly and you'll add just enough.
Those looks amazingly delicious. Thanks for sharing. Love your videos.
Thank you so much. We really appreciate that you are watching our channel.
I'm loving your ideas, too. Thanks for watching and for sharing with us. It's great having you at the table with us.
My Mother made these and hers were fabulous, I can’t belive I’m getting to have her recipe… THANK YOU !!!
You are so welcome! We are tickled to be able to share this one. They really are great!
Love to watch your videos, have you ever thought about giving cooking classes? You explain things so well. I have been cooking for years ( I’m 68 ) but I learn something every time I watch a video. I look forward to the new videos. ❤
Big👍🏻 yummy yummy yummy😊
Wonderful recipe!! I have a Canadian friend and she makes her butter tarts with raisins and pecans 🤗 she even made them with a few chocolate chips.
God bless you both in Jesus name 🙏🏻🤍🙏🏻
Thank you so much for that sweet blessing. It means so much to us! God has certainly blessed us abundantly and we are very grateful!
It's so nice to have you at the table with us.
