Luminar Neo GenErase beta will be available soon and I ran it through it's paces. I even compared it to Photoshop Regenerative AI to see which software wins the AI generation technology. GenErase is not yet available to the public for a few more days, so this is a "first impressions" look at what Skylum has come up with.

Gen Erase looks interesting and I can't wait to test it. Thank you very much for this video.😊👍
My pleasure!
I am losing my enthusiasm with Luminar Neo. The whole reason I purchased it is because it was NOT a subscription model. I noticed that to use GenErase, I have to subscribe to creative pass and it becomes unavailable after the subscription period ends. So if I really wanted this and a subscription model, I would just use Adobe.. Why would anyone go with Skylum on a subscription model..
Because it's just simpler. So get the creative pass then, that works too
@@DigitalPhotoMentor but the creative pass only lets you use gen eraser for about 1 year. Then you have to pay again. The whole reason I boycott Adobe, is because of their subscription model. If I have to subscribe I'll just use Adobe.. I don't see the point of subscription to neo.
If Neo continues to push subscription, they will lose customers.
@@KrunchyJD where did you hear that? I don't believe that is correct.
@@DigitalPhotoMentor Its on the company's own website
There is NO WAY this extension is going to give results like they advertised when persuading us to buy-in. Would like to see SKylum live up to the advertised hype, but I am too old to hold my breath that long.
Keep in mind it's the first version. Photoshop's generative fill wasn't so good at first either
Agreed. The actual quality of this is astonishingly terrible IMO. I literally haven't found it to be anywhere good at compositing in any photo I've tried. I toss it up as a failure at this point until the algorithm is daftly improved.
amazing analysis indeed - Bravo! certainly heped my decision - probably wait till they make it better :)
You're most welcome.
Ha ha! The errors by GenErase were hilarious! What would we laugh at if they did not release the beta too early? Irrelevant, but almost as funny, were the ads TH-cam showed with your video, for a version of Topaz Sharpen AI so old that I did not recognize the interface. Love your videos, though! Thanks for the detailed reviews of this and the Lightroom update!
I know right? I've seen those Topaz ads too and wondered about it. They don't even sell Sharpen anymore
Thanks for the update. It helps to see how it handled the stock files. Also how the new file will be jpeg. Given my work flow, this could be a serious limitation.
Yeah I'm hoping this is just a beta version issue and that eventually it will be a TIF.
Good tutorial and I like when you say in French “et voilà”
Thanks I speak a little French, more Spanish though lol.
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Thank you! Looks like destructive edits? I guess we could create a layer copy to work on. Thanks for the video.
Yeah I guess it is destructive as it makes a totally new image, but the erase parts are not editable once you apply the tool. But it doesn't destroy or alter the original image. Hmm yeah I hadn't considered this aspect of it. Thanks for pointing that out
Considering what it does - good. Over the last week and half I have learned what it works best on. Expect it will improve over time.
Exactly, this is just the first draft per say
Thanks for that - very informative. I doubt that Luminar will sort out all of those issues you have highlighted in the few days left before general release. I do wish they would stop trying to rush out a new tool or even product until it is fully usable. I don't mind a few little bugs as with all new stuff, but this is really poor. I am actually very pleased with the performance of the "ordinary" erase tool in NEO - it really does work well with filling in the background etc. Not perfect, but the clone tool will usually finish the job
I agree the rushed releases aren't doing anyone any favors.
First time I have been disappointed with Luminar Neo. I tried it with eight different pictures and only one worked. thumbs down!
Fair enough
Melissa RGB is Luminar Neo's secret version of AdobeRGB. When I met with the Devs in NY a few years back there was a pretty cool story that goes with it. Just know, it's pretty much the pinnacle of colorspaces and has been the secret sauce of NEO for some time now. This was a leak with the beta. Files save as sRGB now.
Interesting thanks for that. So it's odd then because it seems that Luminar can't display that color space correctly.
Pros and Cons based on Beta , espeically as good as Skylum is about updates, should be ironed out by the time it becomes marketable...don't you think? Also, I would think this would used in conjunction with the "Erase feature" ? Why is the merge in HDR so much better than in Focus Stacking....at least my experience, thus far?
Yes I do think! Let's see how that plays out. But, as I said in the video when I used the Photoshop AI beta, it was pretty bad at first too. Made some really weird things. I did a video on it if you want to see it th-cam.com/video/64dpIqNCV4w/w-d-xo.htmlsi=6uiZJKMJuE9fQ7z7
After one year of using Luminar neo :one off purchase: up until this latest update I was more than happy with all the updates but gen erase refuses to work all I get an error occurred try an re mask re installed twice but to no avail 😢
Sorry to hear that. Reach out to them or wait for the next update. How badly do you need that tool?
Workflow? Use GenErase first before any other adjustments?
No raw edits and all others first. GenErase makes a new TIF image now so use the raw file for edits first
I was really looking forward to this. So, Ok, my expectations were not astronomical but when I tried it out for myself, taking care to not go out of the parameter restrictions, I was seriously underwhelmed! This is soooooooo disappointing. 😩
Sorry to hear that. It is disappointing. I wish they hadn't released it yet. It's not ready
Has anyone been experiencing an issue with gen erase where it replaces what you are trying to erase with more of a similar thing? Example: trying to take out people at a beach scene and it adds in other people (not previously in the picture) ? It's been happening a lot to me - like gen erase and gen fill have got their wires crossed.
Yes, as I said it's a bit hit and miss.
I presently have the latest update, but can't find studio light tool can you help me with this issue?
You need to have either a subscription plan or the Creative Journey Pass. An older lifetime license does not include these new tools. Use my code DPM10 for 10% off
I guess they shouldn’t have called it a lifetime license. I’m not sure they understand the meaning of the word. I for one am ready to go back to Lightroom, at least I know what their subscription terms mean!
@@davidbarba4976 well depends how you interpret it. When you buy it you own what you bought, that version, for a lifetime. So it's accurate.
It doesn't automatically mean you get every update for infinity for free. That's an unrealistic expectation sorry.
I've just tried this on two images, and unfortunately I am very unimpressed. It completely failed to remove the item I was trying to erase, leaving about half of it still in place
Did you paint over all of it and around it a bit?
@@DigitalPhotoMentor yes, I painted all over the part to be removed, and slightly over the edges
@@geofturner986 Go over the edges a bit more maybe. It needs to "read" what is near the area to be filled.
I know you are on the early beta here, and I hope you revisited this because it is way better than Photoshop now. Also, you do know that you only have 1535 pixels or so to work with per removal yes? Photoshop is only 1024. If you go over that, you will get weird artifacts and such. Remove 1 thing at a time. And it takes a while because the image has to be transferred to the cloud, the AI generative process created and then transferred back. I have spoken with Ivan and Skylum about this and there may be a feature in the future where we can run our own AI server with our own models. Anyway, apples to apples at this point (November 7th) my results in Luminar are much better than PS.
Yes I have had good results with it recently for sure. You spoke with Ivan directly? Are you a Skylum partner? I also cannot confirm the limit in Photoshop. I know that was correct for the beta version but I cannot find any documentation on it that's current for Photoshop 2024. Where did you find that?
Google "Photoshops current AI limits". My friend Brian Matiash has a good article on it.@@DigitalPhotoMentor
Also, yes I have been working with them on and off since the macphun days. Not sure, but youtube is being MEGA horrible with censoring comments for no good reason. I think my last comment got deleted. I really hate this platform. @@DigitalPhotoMentor
For best results just do small sections at a time. When you hit erase, it gets sent to the cloud and so that takes a bit of time to be analyzed. I don’t expect results in 5 seconds. . I want the best results possible and so if I have to wait 30 seconds to 60 seconds, no big deal
Good tips but I tried that too. Still got odd results
Luminar, Neo and Adobe, are not always going to work for every photo. And I’m sure they both will get better as time goes on. It probably isn’t a great idea or fair, to do a review as soon as a new update is released.
@@carolsummers7414 That's why my video is titled "first impressions" - people want a video as soon as the new tools are released
Do I own this extension forever, or will it expire in August 2024? I have asked Skylum about the Creative Journey, but their answer was more complicated than my question. If it is going to expire in a years time, they have sold me an extension that is not up to scratch. But if I own it forever, then I can give them some time to improve it.
It's not an extension It's part of the main program. And yes you own it and all the tools that will be added up to August 2024. That's just the date when you stop getting free updates.
@@DigitalPhotoMentor but it will still work (without updates) even after August 2024, right? I am just worried it might stop working altogether.
@@behramcooper3691that is my understanding yes. But I can't confirm 100%
@@DigitalPhotoMentor soon after our exchange yesterday, I got an official answer from Skylum:
"After this Creative Journey Pass expires, you will lose access to cloud (generative AI) technologies (GenErase, GenExpand, GenSwap). You will stop receiving new features, but the previously delivered non-cloud (non-generative) technologies (Studio Light, Water Enhancer, Neon & Glow, etc.) in Luminar Neo will still be available to you."
If they had clarified this in the beginning, I would have spent my money more wisely.
@@behramcooper3691 That actually makes sense. If you are not a current subscriber nor do you have a current Season's Pass, you are not paying to access the generative AI servers.
Have you tried to remove a reflection from glass? Like a reflection on someone's glasses.
Ah good one. No I haven't I will do that and report back. Yes good use of the tool
I'm trusting GenErase will improve but it has worked for me on reflections.
@@DigitalPhotoMentor
I've tried it twice on fairly straightforward removals. In both cases the normal erase did a great job. In one the Generative Erase returned an error, in the other it did a very poor job, only removing half the object. Not a fan so far.
I'm still getting hit a miss results. The blue bowl with the puppy I had better luck using the clone tool
Luminar neo generative ai is in the one time puchrase?
The current one time purchase or do you mean you bought it before? Honestly I'm not sure, you'd have to check your account or email Skylum directly to make sure.
@@DigitalPhotoMentor No, I dont have luminar but I'm wondering whether to buy it. And my question is: Is GenErase, GenSwap included in the lifetime purchase plan for $120 At the moment. Im in poland and it 480PLN, I don't know if there is a different price in the United States.
@@zvspany No the lifetime price is $199 USD but if you get the pro membership (it is a subscription) it's $119 USD for 2 years and you're always current with the software. The lifetime purchase only gives you limited updates. Use this code before Feb 26th to get 20% off the listed prices: AFF-tQVf
Not sure if it's worth it, I was removing a clump of grasses from a snow scene, and it inserted a cows head!!! so redid it, got a black crow like bird... so went back to erase and clone. yet on a busy harbor scene it happily took people and cars out as if they were never there, it's so all over the place, really good or really awfull. I love Luminar but feel they two new upgrades erase and swop are gimmick's until seriously upgraded.
Needs work for sure. Another person in a Facebook group was trying to use GenSwap to make a cow into a horse and it just removes it. I tried too, same. So yeah needs work
They should of offered the beta to all initially, so AI could learn, and then launch the paid version. To many nays at this point, lets see what has changed when it launches in a couple days.
It is out today
@@DigitalPhotoMentor Thanks DPM, I played with it this morning, it was hit or miss.. It really isn't ready for Prime Time. It will get better as AI learns, hopefully faster rendering time also. Should it be in the edit tab vs catalog tab ? A Tiff file also. The develop team needs more work on this tool. Thanks again for you tut.. Much appreciated !!
Wait until you get the real one.. it's way better.. especially when you remember the pixel limitations 😃
I do have the real one. I tried again, same issues but it has fixed the color space issue and it now makes a tif
This might be another tool I avoid. Like super sharp AI. It’s so bad lol
SuperSharp is bad I agree. This one is worth a go though
So artificial intelligence isn't always intelligent:).
LOL correct!
