The 'Star Wars' level in Raystorm is one of the coolest shmup levels ever- never get tired of it.
I really wish Square-Enix would remember Einhander.
I'd prefer m2 to do it at this point, like most other people I've been spoiled by the m2 gadgets and want them in all shooter re-issues. they're just so good, especially for mid-boss HPs. and the gadgets are most excellent for people watching.
I wish that one day we get A G.Rev collection with Border Down, Under Defeat and Strania. 🙏🏼🙏🏼

SO glad to hear this collection turned out nicely. Just put in my order for the Collector’s Edition. Raystorm’s demo was my very first shmup and the game has always occupied a special place it my heart. Rayforce is obviously the best, but Raystorm is my personal favorite. Completely agree with you on Raycrisis lol. I can’t wait to finally have these physically in my collection and hey, the Collector’s Edition is cheaper than second hand copies of pretty much any of them!
I agree with you that the first game is the star of the show.
I’m really glad I bought this collection instead of the S-Tribute one.
One thing that I’m not sure you mentioned is the switchable soundtracks. I really appreciated that feature.
Oh yeah, good point. Especially since the music really is a massive draw.

I personally like Rayforce a tiny bit more than Raystorm. I always thought it was weird how Raystorm has been the most ported game in the series but Rayforce the one that people generally like the most only received 1.
do you have a list of best shumps on switch that you continually update somewhere? if not have you considered making a list like that on your website?
I may be in the minority here, but I actually prefer both Raystorm and Raycrisis to Rayforce. All of them are good, but I find Rayforce's storied excellence to be a bit overblown. Now, I missed out on playing all of these back in the day, so this trilogy is completely new to me... and given how poorly early 3D graphics generally age I actually expected Rayforce to be the most appealing, but yeah it's maybe a 8/10 for me. Definitely still fun and worth playing, but Raystorm has emerged as my clear favorite. Something about it just clicks perfectly with me. Love Raycrisis too. The port work of M2 continues to be of exceptional quality.
have you tried the Raystorm HD on xbox360? the graphics on that version are more like the Radiant Silvergun reissue's Hi Res+Effect mode.
It makes me very happy to see that this package of games is also available digitally now. I'll definitely be picking it up when I can.
Not available in the United States until the 30th Ray'z Arcade Chronology and Raystorm/Raycrisis HD release that day I'll be Getting Raystorm/Raycrisis HD since I already own Layer Section/Galactic Attack Saturn Tribute it's gonna be a long 5 day wait 😂
I think you might end up receiving another copy of Ray Force as well - ININ Games have said something about their collection is now going to also include Ray Force.
Honestly, I barely understood their advertising copy - I don't think they even understand what it is they're releasing themselves anymore.
I'll be curious to know what that version looks like.

I bought Raystorm/Raycrisis HD Collection yesterday when it released and I think my local GameStop has physical copies of Raystorm/Raycrisis HD Collection and maybe copies of Ray'z Arcade Chronology if they have copies of both I may just grab a copy of Ray'z Arcade Chronology cause the physical comes with the one level of the unreleased R-Gear which is not on the digital version

Will definitely pick up in a sale. I'm a big fan of M2's work (Contra collection aside) and don't mind paying for Shot Triggers/Toaplan Arcade Garage games, but I've been burned with Japanese Darius releases and wasn't too happy about it. When the Western versions released they were dumped on sale pretty quickly. The UK version of Ray'Z is £45 right now. They'll likely drop it to £25 soon.

Wish this wasn't so dang pricey. Most shootemups go for comparitively cheap, but these ray releases hover on the high end

I like the contrast the elevator music in Ray Crisis provides. All hell is breaking loose, you're being attacked from all sides and all I can think is "Which floor sir?" 🤣

RayStorm has always been one of my favorites
Nice review. While it may require pausing (or freezing if you prefer), the game does offer some interesting details about each stage in the trilogy. RayForce really just focuses on info about the bosses you'll fight in each stage. There's also a nice soundtrack feature you'll see opposite of stage info, where you can identify the name of the music playing along with who composed it (who at least 9 times out of 10 is TAMAYO).
I'm probably wrong, but I feel the reason that RayCrisis feels like a "downgrade" after playing RayStorm, is that it's supposed to be a prequel to RayForce (which I find bizarre because it has the option to pilot a ship with the lightning firepower that wasn't present in 'Force); Despite the game feeling "short" compared to the others, it seems to offer more replayability due to the various amounts of levels to be discovered and unlocked under specific conditions along with multiple endings as well.
I ordered the Collector's Edition from Strictly Limited games so I'm stuck waiting :(

Does Ray's Arcade Chronology also have the Games's Original Soundtrack library just like the Raystorm and Raycrisis HD collection does? please tell me
Justice for RayCrisis! From my perspective, it's soundly better than RayStorm. It's a much more fluid and forgiving experience overall - from the modular OST and stage design to the improved visuals to the reticle that you can 'push down' at the bottom edge of the screen. It also gives extends. Good luck clearing RayStorm, everyone.

To be fair, I think it gets treated a bit harshly because of what it's compared to. I still really like it and I think if it was released today by some little indie shmup dev, I'd be like wow, this is one of the best new games in ages.
Glad I got my order in at SLG. Love the second game and adore the first when I found a copy for the Saturn. I want to try RayCrisis, despite knowing it's not as great as the first two. Can't wait to play this on modern console, PS5 for me.
I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I think it's still a great game - it wouldn't usually be fair to criticise a game for being 'not as good as Ray Force'. If it was an unrelated release, I reckon it would probably be more highly thought of. Hope you enjoy it!

love the game franchise since when i was kid .. hope they make another ray schmup game and remake or remaster the light bringer game for physical release... its only available in the taito mini arcade game collection
Multiple copies and package versions are something that needs to go away in 2023. There's no reason why R gear shouldn't be on every version of the game and no excuse for certain copies to only contain two of the three games. It's a predatory consumer practice to shop with certain retailers for minimal gains.
And is killing physical in favour of Digital...
Picked up these on the ps4 its a nice package shame R gear was a pre order bonus but it's only one level, i never played the 3rd game back in the day not shore way i missed it lol. The ports are well done and the HD update they do look a lot better than the originals i would say the first game is the best one the other are great tho.

I got the Saturn Tribute, but also decided to get this one because it has the other games. Also it's made by M2 with less input lag. For sure the first game is perfection. Storm is all right and still good fun, but I can't get myself to really enjoy Crisis as much. Not bad, but isn't as coherent and the music doesn't hit right for me.
So after playing Saturn Tribute a lot, it seems like the Saturn port kinda dumbed the difficulty (even on arcade setting). As for the arcade game, the extend is higher and I think the ranking feels more brutal.
Also does this collection have local leaderboards? I can't seem to find that since I only see online ranking. I just want to see my scores since I can't compare to most people online lol
Only online, as far as I'm aware.
Scoreboards seem such a clear and simple thing to just have perfect - but it's amazing how many different ways people manage to make them just ever so slightly off.
@@ShmupsOnSwitch i was expecting a leaderboard like Esp Rade and Aleste Collection. However I realized this isnt a M2 Shot Trigger release. They still should at least have a decent local leaderboard
So glad someone other than City Connection released these. How does the input lag compare?
Haven't tested myself but people are saying this port is more responsive. The City Connection port was based on the Saturn version and most Saturn ports seem to have extra input lag. Apparently the Saturn is a tough console to emulate.

I think the problem with Crisis, is that it’s just a less exciting, more convoluted version of Storm.
While Storm might be a step down from Force in terms of polish and overall cohesiveness, it at least has the attempt to innovate and try something different going for it. Crisis has no such redeeming feature, and is pretty much a step down from its predecessor in every way.
i still own my copy of saturn layer section. as i own EVERY saturn japanese shmups.

Rayforce is arcade perfect on the PS4 version.
One of the best games of all time? Interesting - I wouldn’t even say it’s in my top 25 shmups. I didn’t enjoy the mechanics at all and really was just wishing for a straight shmup without the missiles! Great visuals however.
I can get that - if you're not a big fan of that mechanic, the game's not going to feel great for you. I love it though. Wouldn't want it in all shmups or anything, but here I think they do it really well - especially with how it ties in to the scoring.
@@ShmupsOnSwitch I keep revisiting it to warm up to it - but with Batsugun just out, I'm finding that hard to do as I LOVE that game right now and it's eating up my shmup time!. Feels just great all-round.
So many shmups out recently, along with other non-schmup games, time gets crunched!

The Japanese release is just a regular retail release. Also, I don't think ININ's Games' version is limited (but don't quote me on that).
