Funny thing is, this game still looks and plays wonderful on a small screen Retro Gaming System, like an R36S, which is what I have downloaded it for right now. I like these kind of Shmup's. They are still incredibly addictive, years later, and they perform wonderfully on hand held retro systems, like the aforementioned R36S.
QOTD - Look I'm going to get a lot of grief for this lol but I have to be honest with myself. Earth Defense Force is my favorite shooter from the 90s. Look I know I know I know! There are a ton of other great shooters that I enjoy. UN Squadron, Gradius 3, MUSHA, Gley Lancer, on and on and on. The one I always go back to the most is Earth Defense Force. Maybe it's because it's the only one I can beat without pulling my hair out. I dunno. But it gives me joy to play it!
Personally, I prefer the complete package, ray’z arcade chronology; which came out _before_ this one Granted it’s only a $10 difference… QOTD: mine would be Battle Garegga with its innovative “rank” system
The collection with Ray Force (Ray'Z Arcade Chronology) is the one to get. Not sure why you chose to review HD collection instead. But yeah, both collections are overpriced but the quality of the ports are great. Especially compared to Hamster's Arcade Archives.
Yeah, I'm certainly not a hardcore fan, so $40 for that, I'll pass. As for the question, had to Google, and according to Google, guess Metal Slug counts, and seeing as that's the only one on there I'm familiar with, guess I'll say that one. 😉
That is weird they didn't include Rayforce, not like it's that large of a game or more taxing. The strictly limited release has all three plus a single level of the prototype game R-Gear so I'm waiting for that to drop. QOTD, Favorite 90s shmup is Pulstar on the Neo geo.
this one's on my list! but with the deluge of stuff coming out this holiday season it might have to wait. but it sounds like it's just as well that I did... sounds like I'm better off. QOTD: I gotta give it to the RAIDEN series, I've always found that series fun. Heck, I own all of the RAIDEN re-releases on Switch, and the moment they announce Arcade Archives: RAIDEN II it's gonna be all five of them! shoutout to the toothpaste laser, haha.
I am... so confused. Why did Square/Taito release this for $40 when Ray'z Arcade Chronology is only $10 more and includes all three original games? Who is this for? Any fan of the series will pay the extra ten bucks. I could see if it was maybe $20 for just the two HD versions, but this is baffling on their part.
@DefunctGames I already have the physical PS4 version since July (there was a delay in my country) but I also noticed some UK stores changed their release date to September. Digital PS4 and Switch versions came out on June, and since it's already September and your review dropped I wondered if the game was actually delayed in some regions and got the official September release like I saw back then 😀
In general do over priced games hold their value. I figure less are made . My favorite shmup on the switch is Sine Mora, Pulstar on the Neo Geo And I've been a fan of r type since the arcade days. I'm terrible at all of them it though 😅
Nah the US and Japan got the Ray'z arcade chronology as well. The collections been out for a year and yet strictly limited still haven't shipped their physicals lol.

I'd like to see a Star Soldier collection!

too bad they didn't include RayParkerJunior
If there's something bright
Shooting at your ship
Watcha gonna play?

interesting, all the hardcore shmups fans say the first one of the trilogy is the best one

This is the collection I got a review code for, so it's the version I reviewed. Not a lot of choice on my part.
@@DefunctGames Ah, that makes sense. Odd move on their part. I'd consider Ray Force the best in the series but the later two are great as well.

Verdict
Ray Storm X Ray Crisis HD Collection: B+
Ray’z Arcade Chronology: A+

There is a collection with Ray Force included- Ray'Z Arcade Chronology.
@@Misanola Hey that's the one i have how is this collection different if may ask?
@@4IndieForever The only difference is that it doesn't include Rayforce
@@Misanola Thank you!
This is way to expensive! I would love to play the classics, but there are SO many modern shmups that I can buy for 40€ all together
My fave might actually be Star Parodier. A Star Soldier Collection would rule so much ass

Touhou: The Story of Eastern Wonderland came out in '97. Does that count?
... I believe philosoma (spell check) is from the 90's ...
They really shouldve included Rayforce, real letdown.

I love this collection, got it for my Switch.
B for better than paying up for the original copies
Great review ❤ In the Hunt was my favorite shooter 🥖
Outch, this came out in June, why the review so late? 😮
I got the review code late, but still felt like it was worth covering (especially in light of last week's Taito Milestones 2 review).

RayForce IS collected... on the Strictly Limited Games edition from Europe. Sorry, North America. You lose again!

I'm still waiting for four games I have on order with them. Two got pushed back almost a year. 🙄
@@morsaltywould you recommend not purchasing from them?
Thank you so much 💖😗
