      If her presentation of ACT was anything to judge this by....I most suggest to others to be cautious. If you want to know about ACT - start with any of Russ Harris's books. Buy "The Happiness Trap"as a starting point (here she was spot on). Or enroll on Russ Harris on-line courses I can assure you this will be by far, simply by a huge and massive margin, the better action you can take. I have never heard such a poor and weak description of ACT..."its a bit abstract.".....

    agree! a couple of years ago my therapist advised me to just go cycling (an activity i've always enjoyed) despite me having a major depressive episode. my therapist said "you might as well be depressed on a bicycle. your body will benefit from the physical activity anyway. give it a try." so i did. i went cycling being heavily depressed. sometimes i was crying, most of the time just thinking "this doesn't make any sense". after a couple of weeks I actually started enjoying it ❤ DESPITE being depressed

    I have to disagree to a point with the opening statement. At the height of my depression, I could barely get out of bed to use the bathroom, let alone bathe or eat. At the height of my anxiety, my panic attacks were frequent and I'd burst into tears. All of these severely affect one's ability to get and keep work, to attend school/college, to focus on hobbies, friends etc.
    This behaviour is not professional and not easy for others around you to deal with. I quit and got fired from several jobs in this time. I could not focus long enough on anything to be productive. I had to take time away from everything until I focused on me and my issues and got the help I needed.
    It is not unreasonable to want your mental health under some level of control before you embark on better journeys regarding dreams and ambitions. It's quite logical. It motivates me to keep up with therapy and practising coping skills so I can continue on my journey as well. Sure, I have days that are terrible, but I'm at a stage where I can hold down full-time study without buckling and breaking every single day.

      Please try high doses of B12. It worked for me very quickly.

      I think the idea is not to wait until you have healed before living life. This is possible if you're in a sort of medium state of mood or healing, obviously not if you're on the catatonic side of the depression spectrum.

      @@danielkaiser8971 I understand that. That why I said I disagree to a point. I believe people who suffering from moderate to severe mental illness need treatments in place before even attempting to embark on any personal dreams that require large amounts of effort and focus. I'm using my own personal experiences as a source.
      Most suffering from mild mental illness can still function quite well in society, and are often very successful in social settings, with their careers and studies, and are able to enjoy their hobbies and achieve life goals.
      The blanket statement she made (which put all mental health sufferers in the same box) bothered me a bit. I think everyone's journey of getting help is different and has different goalposts to measure achievement (which aren't necessarily dreams) but are still commendable achievements and should be celebrated. Example: I cooked myself nutritious food today and ate it. I just thought I'd clarify that.

      @@1fredforme I actually took B12 for a long time many years ago when I did not eat a lot of meat. I did not notice a difference in my mental health whatsoever. I believe therapy, medication or a combination of the two are the most effective ways of treating mental illness. My B vitamin levels and my blood work in general is totally fine. You can be biologically healthy whilst still being mentally unhealthy.

      @PurplePinkRed I understand where you are and where you've been. I'm more or less in about the same area as far as being able to deal with people and situations. I can handle interaction with people better, though I do have a limit. Once I reach the limit, I have to stop or I'll most likely be drained of energy. I continue my counseling and medications and do what I can handle. My counselor thinks I am going in the right direction. Hang in there, you're worth the time.

    This isn't new, I learned about it in university, it might be getting more popular, but it's not new. For pple who say this wouldn´t work for them, don´t knock it till you try it, also, this isn't a tool you use on it´s own; it's a tool in a the CBT toolbox that should be used with other tools. It´s not about just thinking positively, it´s analyzing why you think something, accepting reality, but being able to move forward still.

    I love the concept of ACT. Dr. Judy is phenomenal & explains things so well. I’m doing CBT but am about to begin DBT & I hope to use ACT eventually. I think it’ll help with my grief & trauma.

    If someone is clinically depressed, then they should try treatment. But if you find always reaction badly to situation then CBT is good. You can't just do this for a few months. You have to do for years until it becomes a habit. Your reaction to the situation is the key. So listen to Dr. Ho. First take a look at the " ugly painting" and decide Instead of getting upset about it. With ATC you can think through. I always put off my reaction. Then try different ones in my mind first. The best is to " apologize" or " thank you" instead of my previous behavior only made things worse. So don't wait another day to try this. Get out and have a good time now. Sell that ugly painting. And use the money for something helpful or buy a new painting. Then think about the person who is enjoying that painting. Thats why CBT is. Not letting the moment bring you down worrying.

    I was very depressed yet very functional. A great way to make yourself feel worse is to force yourself to update a resume and go on that job interview. Big mistake. I am suffering the lost opportunity and bad impression ever since.

    I think this is good for people who are relatively high-functioning, but it's definitely not for everyone. Some people need time and space to work on their personal problems because life is fast and overwhelming. Also being able to function doesn't equate to feeling better.

      yes but not doing anything while also depressed actually makes you feel worse, some people can’t afford to not keep living.

      I think ACT is soooo much more than what Dr.Judy can cover in a 12 mins video, so maybe reading some Russ Harris's books can be helpful

    This sounds like a great idea. And it would solve many of my criticisms of CBT. (I dislike Beckian CT a bit because not enough focus is being put on acting and actually solving the real world problems of the client.)
    The potential danger I am seeing here is ofcourse the topic of "who decides what problems of the patient and potential areas for improvement are the most urgent ". I think sometimes, therapists can have other ideas of "urgent needs" than the patient.

    One good thing about Kyle Kittleson, he knows how to keep things Poppin. No matter what the subject is, he knows how to make it more interesting than it really is to keep people viewing. First it was CBT now it's Act. Who's Zoomin who here. I guess I missed the point of all this. Oh well, thumbs up to everyone gets help from this video.

    Honestly, the therapist doesn't do a good job of explaining what ACT is. She did recommend a good book though, The happiness trap. I would also recommend the author's first book on ACT called The Confidence Gap. The Author goes into deep detail into what ACT is and the book is very interactive. It is not a book you just read but you are asked to do a number of different ACT and mindfulness type exercieses.

    How does someone afford the best therapy that actually works when a person who is depressed can't get out of the house, shower, clean or work? This new therapy, along with most mental health counseling, remains inaccessible to most Americans. The government funded programs just push drugs, that even doctors admit, do little to treat depression and are riddled with side effects.
    There are two kinds of health care. One is for more affluent citizens and one is for those who are disadvantaged. I am not sure what the solution is, but this video just made me even more depressed because I just do not know how to access help right now. I do not have the energy to find resources, financial and otherwise. Depression makes people stuck and people desperately want relief, but how do you get treatment that works.
    Does anyone have an answer?😭

      Hey, I understand your struggle and frustration. I'm not American but this is an issue in most places. I can't give you specific advice but I've heard there are places that will do therapy on a sliding scale. If you see a doctor, they should be able to refer you to these places.
      If you're in a position where you're depressed to the point where you can't or can barely function at all, your goal isn't to get the best therapy, it's to get any therapy or help you can. Being able to get the best therapy is a privilege that a lot of us don't have. With regards to meds, meds do have side effects (all meds do) but you might not experience them and they can be very helpful, especially if your symptoms are severe. There are many types so you might need to try a few to find one that works for you. Medication can be really helpful because it can enable you to start looking after yourself and get therapy. Most people with clinical depression use a combo of meds and therapy, at least until they don't need the meds anymore.

      I have an answer and a good news for you. There is not such thing as the best therapy. The try to promote such aproach (in general CBT aproaches) because they need promotion. They don't really work as they say because people who chose to practice this aproaches lack some basic therapeutic skills so in turn, they need to rely on techiques almost exclusively. The good news here is that you do not have to pay more to get good therapy. Because you need good therapist not good therapy. How you find a good therapist? This is not easy but not imposible. Not easy because good therapists don't do promotion. They don't need it. They have very long waiting lists without promotion. Try to rely on people who now other people etc. Real therapists don't come in front of camera on a regular basis and don't usually write books. They are too busy helping others and get a satisfaction from it, so no need for 5 minutes of fame in front of camera. Also, a good therapist is not necesary expensive. Good therapists do his job to help others not to get rich.
      Also, it might be needed to test more therapists until you find a good one. You will recognise when you will find him/her by the fact that it will be the person who really understands your pain, is not eager to explain things to you and will rather make you find out things about yourself through putting the necesary questions, you will feel understood, you will feel empathy and warm. People don't need training to offer empathy and warm. This is a natuaral gift, you hav it or not. You don't gain it over time by training. That being said, the rest will be the ability to put the right questions and to insist on things that matters until the changes on your mood will be noticed and beyound. Good luck !

      @@foreverolly8864 Takes longer and not as easy to treat. PTSD is a form that further stems from pain, and it's recurring and sometimes never goes away, especially if it's severe pain and repetitive pain.

    The language trap is only half real. It is real in the minds of the many who forget that the chain of individual words we string together truly. Words are in essence the creation of a state to express a complexity. A symbol used for representation. You only trap yourself if you speak without a margin of error.
    Might I suggest an addition to this language paradigm?
    We shall call it "What I meant was!!!".
    Before the new meaning sinks deep the option to create a more accurate statement still exists. One that more accurately explains the situation. To understand that we use words in finality while meaning probabilistic is lost on a majority as the concept of an individual word as a summary of a concept is lost in daily conversation.

      Lol, she's a covert narc and using her own therapy to cover up from herself and facing the fact that she is falling apart.
      1) Look at her facial expressions compared to the situation at hand (slow-mo if needed)
      2) Listen to how and when she disengages from objective reality
      3) Watch who she is underneath the surface she engineered to "feel as if she is as others see her" rather than "actually being"

      @@JDforeveralone Haha, i remember I went through the same thing with her for a while, like thinking "hmm, that's a bit odd, wonder what's going on with that" so often I started to look a bit deeper. Her gestures and intonation are frequently very odd for the situation at hand, like when Kyle is clearly in pain she frequently give off an air of pleasure or maybe glee and then a moment after seem to try and suppress her own expression of that glee (facial glee first, intonation mellowed later legs stop twirling last all in stark contrast to situation at hand, needs slow-mo to really pick it up)
      I think it's hard to put the 2nd point into words in a youtube comment, there is just a lot to it more than one factoid or timestamp, but with that said look at when and when she uses the "square earth" metaphor and how, notice her intonation and body language. She works to split her "clients" (Kyle) experience of reality from objective reality with the pretext of helping him deal with setbacks, but when does she seem more happy and excited, when Kyle is in an unburdened stated of mind or when he is staring down into his own soul as if momentarily caught in a chasm of despair?
      Sociopaths and narcissists can experience duping-delight when gaslighting their victims, a similar feeling to playing poker and succeeding to fool your opponent into having a full house when really all you have is smoke and mirrors, she seems to interact with Kyle like that frequently and the pattern is something like
      1) she fishes for vulnerabilities while pretending to want to help
      2) Kyle swallows the bait, hook and sinker and soon feel horrible
      3) she offers pretend solution that solves nothing, rather it's rewriting his sense of objective reality with some BS
      4) Kyle feels obliged to pretend to feel better, and does his best to fulfill that obligation
      5) she twirls her heel gleefully
      6) Kyle looks somewhat shellshocked but politely happy
      7) she praises him overtly, but uses that praise to pick at his wounds covertly
      8) Kyle oblivious looking like he is in somewhat of a foggy state of mind.
      key being the fishing, disengagement from objective reality and clear glee on her face in obscene moments, and she knows it!

    My mind/gut told me that my cat will get killed by my neighbor but I just thought it was a silly thought but it happened. This happens a lot too. I really don't trust my thoughts because I have OCD but they almost always turn out to be true. So now, how can I not trust what my mind tells me?

    The author George Lakoff from Berkley has brought out the same basic thoughts but he said the thought when first generated goes in the brain(don’t think of an elephant)the brain takes that thought and “ by telling yourself don’t think that you in reality almost cement the thought in your brain,So it’s the thought,not language.Its how the brain works.Example:You tell yourself don’t look down,don’t look down.Then that’s all your brain wants to do...

    Ftr- I don't rate my
    " happiness" health as being happy all the time. Not in the least. In fact, I enjoy the dark mossy fragrant woods of depression that come and go like hibernation. No. What really bothers me is: I'm not progressing. I'm not gratified, professionally, personally , creatively. I feel like ALL MY EXHAUSTIVE EFFORTS , have never gotten me to where I want to go. You meet people like me everyday. Our lives are just pale imposters of what we Can hope to enjoy as a human being...but can't seem to pull off . Even something like not being able to afford dental care, can drastically derail happiness .

    I wonder how much is cost benifit.
    Like for many young folk they simply don't have the space to exist.
    If you've fully adapted to creating purely digitally you can exist in an 8x8 cell.
    For those that do more traditional hands on things, (that the boomers constantly talk shit about us not doing) you would need a significantly higher amount of resources to achieve them comparatively to previous generations.
    I wonder how much barrier to entry has an effect on younger folks depression and anxiety

    From these few remarks it is not really clear how ACT is different from standard CBT. (In my opinion)

    I don’t see CBT an act as one. They are separate. Can you give me a reference for that please? I just finished a masters and my thesis was act vs cbt

      They may not be, but they fall under the CT umbrella. But they are similar in that they address how thoughts can impact your behavior.

    None of this can stop the pain of Depression, Anxiety, pain disorder, low no self esteem, feeling unlikes in wanted, feeling worthless. I have spent months not taking a shower not cooking 22 hours in the bed. Getting out just to potty n make a piece of buttered toast bread. I spent 60 yrs trying to get better. It never gets better. I been on so many medicines and there's only one medicine that helps but because people abuse it now I can't get it. I can't function . I think it's a very cruel life. She smiles sweetly and has no clue any of this crap will help someone. It only helps her to make a buck to sell a book which I bet she wrote . U can't reverse child abuse you can't reverse being bullied you can't reverse never being loved . Well I'm sure the ones not so bad just having a bad day is different than what I'm going thru. The bad seems to always happen to me. I'd like to see some professional diagnose me n make my pain go away.

      The purpose of this technique in contrast to many others is not to stop those things directly. It isn't to make the pain go away directly or to reverse anything. It sounds like your pain is so severe it wouldn't be feasible to just accept it without judgement (although you should do this in addition to other things). More traditional CBT sounds like it would be more ideal for you because you're saying a lot about how things can't get better or won't get better and that bad things just always happen to you. These are harmful thought patterns that CBT is meant to address. This therapy should come into play once one is in a more stable state. Different therapies are designed for different forms of depression. Don't take her promotion of this as her saying that this is the cure for everyone. I'm sure she is aware of what I'm saying as a professional psychologist.

    i asked my therapist for CBT therapy. He declined, saying I know what I should be doing and don't need someone to help me with it. He's in to Chinese therapy and herbs.

    Mindfulness doesn’t encourage perpetuating happy emotional states. It challenges us to overcome our emotions by nurturing inner peace through adversity and healthy questioning of self. ACT seems like a slide of hand not a deep rooted therapeutic model.

    For example Jesus plays with your mind he
    says a lustful look is akin to adultery and
    hatred akin to murder. God sees everyone on
    a level playing field. That is reality. We are equal.
    This equality of evil is broken only by God himself
    - you know the story. God breaks in and acts in lives
    to restore his truth. He displays this in the book of Acts
    as I’ve said. All the people in the book of Acts suffer
    terribly but ‘act’ they do with great vigour and at times
    joyful singing! It’s amazing. Read it as a psych text
    and see what on earth is going on. ACT!

    ACT is just a renamed meshuga of a theory that has been around.The tool in therapy of simply addressing facts, verses the unbalance thought,ultimately emotions,If we are in a depression our emotions are out of wack.So an example:My girl friend hates me I know it because she hasn’t called me in 3 days,the therapist,or anyone asks..Do you Really thinks she hates you,Answer No. Therapist”why”because she’s always been there for me for years,I know she’s busy with her kids,she wasn’t feeling well.....If you can get factual thoughts in there(the brain)when we are depressed.Gradually our emotions get on a more even keel. Deep depression probably need drug theory in addition.So again language in my opinion has Nothing to do with any of it this has been out there for a long time,It’s been wrongly modified and renamed ACT.....in my opinion.       You are so right. What is worse is they take advantage of people who are desperate find some help. This video is no inocent comercial for some item that you might chose or not to buy. Is a covered comercial for a treatment done by a narcisistic lady that doesn't even understands the basic principles of psychotherapy and the mechanism of psychotherapy, how psychotherapy works. This is more disturbing.

    She's so ecited, like she had a revelation. Some depression symptoms are stored in body and mind fuck will not help. You can't push the river. Somatic experiencing helps in some shutdown cases more. When the mind-body-nervoussystem system is regulated, insights and stucked energys can be freed, wich allow naturally inert healing. When that occurs, new life dynamics can take place. Of course parma has no interest in humanistic approaches! Ther's no gain in people getting better without pills!

      I tried 40 years of there therapy n pills the only thing worked was Xanax. It shuts the nervous system down and says shut up be still let her Ming n body rest it's forced to by the meds . NOTHING ELSE WORKD. 40 yrs and 40 meds nothing works but Xanax. Thanks to people abusing it people like he will never see a normal day in my life again. It was my only survival. Now I just survive I live in the bed 22 hours a day I'm paralyzed with DEPRESSION and now anger because I'm left to suffer. She has no clue act is just another selling point I wonder did she write a book of course. All the history couldn't come up with Act but she could. None of it works. One 10 cent pill can do more than any THERPY can do costing millions of dollars. I'm sure my treatment gas cost $20.000 this year and 35000$ last year. One 25 cent pill a day would solve my problem. They don't want you healthy they won't have a job if u get healthy . There goal is to keep u sick giving these new concoction s off Psch meds to bake u worse.

      ACT does have elements of bodywork, you need to read 1) ACTMade Simple - Russ Harris or A Liberated Mind by Steve Hayes - who largely created the model. Or youtube - Steve Hayes - Turning Pain Into Purpose.

    Yes. This is akin to Christian grace. This is
    what I’ve been getting at. We are subject to
    the world/language. But it is not necessarily true.
    The book of Acts in the Bible elaborates/amplifies
    ACT. I personify it ie Devil/God but if you can
    get behind the ‘scenes’ so to speak you find a truer
    reality. It’s given the term grace which is a way that
    God reorients reality. The Devil seeks to keep u wallowing
    around in earthy stuff. God cuts right through bringing
    his grace upon a life. It establishes new norms which
    enables a person to cut free from earthly judgments.
    U become more accountable not less. More truthful
    not less. But the world sees it as opposite! Amazing.
    People are stuck but they don’t know it. I’m free in a
    reestablished/reoriented life. I am untouchable. Thanks
    to you for this insight. I like your colours young man!
