This girl here is the reason why I read comic books and she's the example of what's good on the internet today! When you do what to do with passion, it shows and it captivates people. I love you ComicbookGirl19!! You are the best!!
Fantastic talk CBG19, it takes true courage to expose your inner fears and faults to a room full (and a world full) of strangers like that. It is that quality that makes you so engaging and easy to relate to. Self discovery is key to life and not everyone gets there. I have similar feelings about my youth and despite having a fair deal of success in what I do I often feel kind of a fraud. When I realised in my late 20s that my strengths were a direct result of my weaknesses I found that happiness. I suspect the same is true for you - I've never met a true artist who isn't a bit Peter Parker!
+david stanley I'm just being respectful towards women. Look I apologize some asshole is being a dick towards me. From Metallica's one lyric video. Some cunt there is being an ass. I'm sorry. I need some time to deal with this dick
You are a hero... With powers similar to Katniss and Daenerys.... And It's so easy to feel connected to you.. And to everything you said in this tedx talk..
Man I remember watching you debate who would win in fight between The Avengers and The Justice League in 2012 and have been watching your videos every since. I would have never imagine that you would have blossomed in the the awesome person that you are today. Keep inspiring others to not be afraid of being themselves.
she just made reading comics a lot more defined I understood the moment she starred comparing charters to herself. this is why I'm a subscriber to Comicbook girl 19 she puts thoughts and feelings to everything in a world lie today you gotta feel
Damn girl, I don't know how this escaped me. I've been watching you since you put out the first GoT history video and I never knew that you did a TED talk. Awesome stuff, very much what a lot of people out there need to hear.
That was brave and wonderful! Thank you 19! Those are my archetypes too! Just brilliantly concise, I know Ted lectures are hard, she nailed it. I can relate and I guess that's why I like her so much. Powerful.
Superb you using your own words to make people understand the message is never easy in front of any group even more in those in very smart groups. They heard, understood and admired . Well done young lady CBG19
I've always identified with Nightcrawler. He's arguably the most shunned and discriminated character due to his appearance, but he always proves to be the better person. Plus I enjoy joking around and I'm rarely caught being serious.
I love how contradictory he is. In that he quite literally looks like a demon, yet is considerably pious. I addition to looking as he does and trying to imagine how serious such a person would be having gone through what he had as a result... yet he's a fun loving jokester who basically only takes death, love and faith seriously.
I always identified with Rogue because although she looks normal, she is anything but. She cannot be touched by anyone, therefore is untouchable. Whenever I'm touched, it feels bad due to past experiences, so I avoid touching people. (Handshakes, hugs, etc.) I look normal, but in my head I am constantly screaming, which Rogue deals with as well. Nightcrawler and Rogue are foster siblings.
What a great message and so true on so many levels! I discovered the X-men in 1984 at a time in my life when I really needed them. The inner strength of Kurt Wagner and Peter Rasputin showed me that I was just as strong on the inside as well. That helped me to overcome and survive the health issues in my childhood that threatened my life as I was in and out of the hospital.
Koda 26 anyone who thinks that are wrong. Heroic characters inspire people, Make them better..... Take the character Spider-Man for example, his character has been helping me get through life. To be honest I wouldn’t know where I’d be without him.
She's really super, so smart and charismatic. I had never really noticed that I have been taking inspiration from fictional characters my whole life and I consider it a very therapeutic and inspirational thing to develop your personality and self-confidence.
I've been watching CBG19's videos a lot lately and I have decided that I am going to read comic books from now on. I've really liked a lot of the superhero movies that have come out, and I feel a sense of power in identifying with these strong characters! I remember reading somewhere that reading fiction actually makes you smarter in some ways, for much of the reasons that CBG19 stated.
Years ago someone told me i was a "Colossus" yet i always wanted to be a "Gambit", I began to see my "Colossus" as i read about him and added a "Beast" with a hint of "Cyclops".....Life can be so much more fun when we use tools that we understand.
You are an outstanding speaker with endless charisma. I love your GOT on You Tube and you helped me understand the series with depth and detail. I hope everyone could hear this heartfelt speech, so on target. Keep up the great work and your creativity and genius mind will only get better with time.
Very insightful seeing ComicBookGirl19 out of her ComicBookGirl19 element. I see a very intelligent woman, with a lot to say, a lot to feel, and a lot to figure out. Except for the woman part, I can totally relate. She is a Peter Parker. I can respect that. I think most reasonable people can.
I love CBG19!!!! Not only as a nerd myself, but I have 7 nieces and she (other than the potty mouth) is an awesome role model for young girls as far as being yourself and accepting others for who they are
My name is Francisco from Brazil. Recently I have whatching your videos and every day I love more and more your videos. I identify myself with you. Congratulations for lecture. Great!
Yes to X-Men! I've always had the biggest crush on Gambit, have always appreciated that there are SO many individual stories, and have always enjoyed the Truth-to-Life-Lessons taught through the stories ~ Professor X would have been the best teacher for everyone. The both-gender-importance idea has also been a fantastic part -- kind of the same reason I loved to play "Mortal Kombat" - and then named my first son after the ninja, Rain. Keep doing what you're doing, CB19 - you fill our heads with fantasies, for sure, but many of us can relate and feel a connection, which is one of the best parts of Life!
Engineers. After reading through the comments and seeing people against the archetype I feel that as an engineer myself should also post some context that despite this also going through the same thing. So yeah fitting into the archetype I'm an introverted, logical, INTJ nerd who likes order in life. No surprises, nothing to catch me off guard out of fear that I will fail. However living this logical and orderly life it came on a realization for me that compared to others, I have no friends. Other than a single best friend, was not social enough to make more. It was fine in high school, however when that single friend moved away for university, and I entered into engineering, it then became a problem. All humans desire some level of social interaction. And to achieve mine I turned to a comic book (manga) character. Fair from Tubasa Reservoir Chronicles. I admired his outgoing, upbeat and optimistic personality. I wanted to be like him. And so for the past couple years have adopted his personality. It was not too hard as our baseline opinions matched, but by trying to follow this fictional character I learned how to reach out to people, how to be outgoing and happy. And people were drawn to this. Here is the plot twist. As I continue to read Fai's story in the manga, I learn that he and I were the same. That just as I had put on a face to gain this new better personality, so did this character, Fai. It was a sad twist of irony, when I realized the face I was wearing was the same one as the person that I admired. We were both doing it to achieve the same goal, friends... And to accomplish this, we smile... Everyone has their problems, one type not more than others. Just as you see someone who may be 'strict and boring' does not mean that they want to change an try something differently. Just as someone who is happy and outgoing might not be truly so...
Great job! I teach youth comics workshops (after school, summer program, and foster care) and this celebration of self is exactly what I hope my kids get out of their experience.
Very insightful talk cbg19! I think you have an excellent take on the importance comic books and other creative media can have on the formation of one's self-understanding.
I really enjoyed this talk, I feel it elegantly explains a lot of the love people have for fiction and how it can shape and guide us. A lot of talks introduce us to things we may or may not experience in life. I think this one, shares wisdom that can empower the story of life and each one of us in that story :)
First of all I wish I had a friend like Comicbookgirl19 growing up. If I had a fearless comic loving badass by my side it wouldn't have taken 20+ years of trial and error for me to finally find and love my true self. Second, she seems like one of those people you just want to sit down with and discuss everything and anything over tea.
Great talk! I also have frustration with society's pressure to be "normal" (for me it was most of all, my lack of interest in team sports; among other factors). I can also identify with the comment about engineers, as I met one manager/engineer who noted that a log of engineers treat those under them like computers to be programmed, and I think mixing engineer views with religion can also lead to an offensive level of controlling and oppressive pressures. My favorite comics are also the X-men, and my favorite is Nightcrawler because he is so non-normal yet good. One reason I like comic book super heroes because it represent individual empowerment. I also have a lot of interest in personality theory as it explores the difference between people (though not in enough variety), and the strengths (super-powers) and weaknesses (personal challenges to find a solution or alternative approach or direction to go in).

I was afraid to watch this because I’ve never seen her do a speech before and I thought it’d be nervous and badly done. And it turned out to be one of my favorite things on TH-cam! Wow
wow! she gave a really inspiring speech, and you can see that she's having a tough time talking about this stuff, she alomst started crying a few times..seriously,not even michael stevens from vsauce couldn't give a speech this brilliant!!!
Channelling or invoking archetypes that are personally meaningful to one is a fairly fundamental tool of Chaos Magick. It's good to see CBG19 giving these sorts of talks: she's touched on this before with her TH-cam vids on Grant Morrison a bit. Even if you only try this briefly, it works. My own personal example - I was working for weeks on a coding problem & it just wasn't working, whatever I tried it just didn't work right & I felt like I was making zero headway. In the car on the way to work I decided to try & invoke Ganesh, the Hindu god of communication & ideas & smashing through obstacles. I made my face long like I could feel a trunk & tusks, felt the weight of a ton of muscle that was me, like a tank, and just internalised his character. That day, the job got done. I got my code through code review & QA, smashed the problem like it wasn't there. I don't believe in Gods as external sentient forces so much as cultural constructs, embodying certain ideas that have been important to humans over millennia, and invocation is a form of meditation on those ideas & traits. It's all about getting your head in the zone to do what you need to, an as such, that works really really well.
Her videos on Game of Thrones are so good, that people always assume that I've read The Game of Thrones books, when in fact all I did was listen to her videos on Game of Thrones and watch the TV series of course.
Greeting from Poland Highlands. I love to see you finally on TED :) I know what you talking about. And I tell you leaving in small town in east Europe, sound worse than it is, still being a guy how love comic books, it was quite hard to get them, you cod say it still is, and 10y ago there was not a lot of people who I wood say, had open mind, and I was also the guy who liked to question things.
