  • If we want to change the world, we have to change the way we teach children about the world and their places in it. In a 100% media saturated society, that means changing the media our children consume, and the ways in which they interact with media. We need more female superhero toys, and we need them right now.
    Dr. Christopher Bell is as an Assistant Professor of Media Studies and the Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Communication at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. He specializes in the study of popular culture, focusing on the ways in which race, class and gender intersect in different forms of media. Dr. Bell's primary research area is young adult culture, particularly dystopian young adult literature and comic books. He teaches both theory and methodology courses in critical analysis of popular culture, rhetorical theory, representation theory and mass media. Dr. Bell is a nationally-touring speaker on issues of race, class and gender in the media, and has presented work at regional, national and international conventions and conferences.

    Dr. Bell is my professor at UCCS. He definitely is one of the best teachers I've met and his lectures are really some of the best! The points he's made in this TedTalk are great!

      Chris and his daughter Olivia are my cousins- she's about 12 now and she is so feisty. She is definitely her daughter. Strong and independent and ready to take on the world. Even if your daughters are grown you can still take initiative and help create a better world for the futures daughters, like olivia.

    Take time to watch this important video. I attended the @TEDxCSprings event. Dr. Bell's presentation had the most impact on my view of the world, media and its impact on children.

    The fact that this only has 136 thumbs up, and 20 comments is sad. 5,339 views today in April 2016 is too few. This should be viral. This is changing my brain, straight up. I'm sharing this everywhere and I hope there is real change that comes from this consciousness shift.

    Now you can update your presentation... Rey, the lead character (who is female) from the new Star Wars movie is also missing from the action figure set.
    Great speech. I was unaware of all but the Black Widow scandal (and it IS scandalous).

      I noticed today when I was at the Disney store I saw plenty of Finn action figures and costumes Lots of droids but absolutely nothing for Rey and I think she's amazing she's pretty and is a badass who deserves just as many action figures as Finn

      If you were to take in the fact that theres a large amount of backlash to that character, not because she’s a woman, but because she’s a badly written character. So if a toy company were to spend time and money to distribute the toy, you would end up with toys sitting on shelf’s with very little sale.

    I just came across this. Powerful stuff here. When I was growing up I watched G.I. Joe, Thundercats and He-Man and they had female characters and toys representing them. I'm curious if things have changed since this speech was given.

    While I don’t think that selling princess merchandise is bad per se (which is something the video doesn’t outright state), but I agree that there should be merchandise of female heroines, even when the main demographic is male.
    And that toys should be marketed as unisex, even if it favors one gender as its main demographic.

    Men are to protect, that's why we have male superheroes. Or you want female superheroes to do the job and protect men? Feminists would still be unhappy with it.

    • @silvervixen007
      @silvervixen007 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Mexican Giraffe That's really not the point of the video. And to answer your question, no they wouldn't be unhappy with it nor are they unhappy when a man protects a woman. Feminism is much more than that but you are clearly not interested in educating yourself about it

      And if your future boys does, what will you do? Beat him senseless to not like dolls or teach him „dolls are for girls“ and encourage the behavior to look down on boys who do so? Mike who got bullied for liking My Little Pony ended up dying seven years after his attempted suicide because of the consequences of the brain damage he suffered from hanging himself. If you say „not my problem“, then you got no heart.

    The reason you aren't finding female superheroes is because you expect them to look like male superheroes. The feminine genius is unique and special and beautiful and looks nothing like superman. She looks like our Mother Mary.

  • @thetruth5849
    @thetruth5849 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    This is a ... joke do any of know how many female superheroes there are, I mean do you watch the cw shows I mean their are just as many female heroines in them then men. in the movies let's take a look at them, the list that you came out with had many TEAM UP movies meaning female heroines in them just as much as men. Look comic books have them in many of them too I mean have you ever even looked at a comic book, cat woman, captain marvel, black canary, Wonder Woman, scarlet which, black widow, white canary, power girl, super girl, starfire, and countless others I mean there are so many. It is also a fact that more men write comics, scripts, and direct movies than women do which is not a sexist comment but a fact. Oh and the merchandise, sure women get left out sometimes but maybe that's because the company can't make as much money selling gamora shirts then if they sold a groot of star lord shirt and the another fact is most people really don't care about this , unless you are a triggered feminist, because it doesn't MATTER, there are so many more important issues than if the is a female superhero on a shirt or not i mean what the hell, people need to get their priorities straight there is no long term effect on a girl if she can't get a shirt with a female superhero on it.

    • @silvervixen007
      @silvervixen007 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The Truth This is why it hasn't changed much. Because many people don't think it matters when it obviously does. Why would Gamora T-shirts not sell? The film did well in the box office right? So why, on a team shirt would they leave out the girl in the movie? It just doesn't make sense at all. Would people really think:" Oh a women is on this shirt, let's not buy it" And if the majority of the people does think like this then this is where to start
