I am an ESL teacher at an international school in China, and have recently started a comic book club. I think it's a perfect way to teach the English language in a fun and unintimidating manner, with a focus on slang and colloquial English. We meet for the first time next week and I am super excited!
Hello!! I’m writing my research project for my Batchelors degree in comics and I’d love to include more references and people using comics in education. How is the club going? And is there any chance I could contact you to ask a few more questions? Thank you!
@angiegeorgousopoulou6507 Thanks for your comment. The club is on a hiatus right now, basically work became very busy, and the students had other obligations (exams and competitions), but I am thinking about starting it again in the spring. This time I am thinking about opening it up to more levels, and I am hoping to make it a little more structured, so that club time is more productive. It wasn't very easy to encourage discussion as the students were a little shy to speak, and they lacked confidence in their speaking abilities. I have some ideas how to fix these issues though.
I use to read Cap Underpants as kind of a loophole as comics were always banned, cause Cap was like a comic disguised as a chapter book lol. Never understood why they were banned, and everytime I try to explain that they have value, help you learn to read etc. I get looked at sideways. Thank you for not only allowing comics, but encouraging them. It's true I rarely checked out books from the library until I found out they had comics, then I started checking out books along with them.
