    As a biracial person who grew up in a not so ethnically diverse place, comics and the superhero genre in general definitely helped get me through some of the roughest times of my life. Happy I'm not the only one.

    Andrea is the coolest. Enjoyed chatting with her on an online radio show about comics -- she's sharp and snarky... a great combo.

    I have to disagree that liking “nerdy” things would inhibit a woman from advancing in the science fields. If anything I would argue that it might help her chances to make friends and attract people. This speech made some good points but felt like the overall theme was missing. I say this from a writing standpoint. What was the challenge? What was so difficult about it? What was the solution, that was there all along? Yes it has these elements but it feels very basic. I think the “intro, body, conclusion” format did a disservice to an otherwise neat story. Just get up there and talk from the heart and say I like superhero’s.. you don’t have to try to tie it into some lesson learned based on social taboos and etiquette.

    I'm glad this worked for Andrea. But I feel the superhero genre's underlying messages are not so empowering. They reinforce corporate America's inhuman ethic that life is a Darwinian struggle, and it is natural for only a few people to have power over the rest. The sad message underlying all superhero stories is that _ordinary people don't matter_ . The only thing you can do is to rely on an angry superhero for vigilante justice. In real life there are no angelic superheroes who can hold power without abusing it.

    • @darlalathan6143
      @darlalathan6143 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, Real Life Superheroes patrol some streets at night, helping the homeless and protecting commuters from street crime. Like Batman, they don't have superpowers. Only a few comics book superheroes are executives: Batman, Iron Man, and the Silver Age Blue Beetle. Your opinion stems mostly from early 21st century superhero movies. The superpowers idea dates from ancient mythical deities and demigods. The vigilantism stems from Western cowboys and hardboiled private eyes, who were formerly ordinary people.

      A different way of looking at a lot of what you said is that the people who are high achieving even in a corporate structure can come together to try to help humankind in general. The comics analog would be the superhero team up. People who are the best at what they do coming together for the greatest good can make a difference. The issue is not enough organizations have a true social conscience.

    • @seanmcmurphy4744
      @seanmcmurphy4744 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dpreetam So . . . we should rely on a privileged corporate elite of "high achieving" people's social conscience to help humankind? How has that worked so far?
      I agree that's the metaphor in superhero movies. From the popularity of such movies it's obvious that a lot of Americans have swallowed that view. But such humanitarian corporate employees as you describe are doomed to failure. In a free market the profit motive inevitably causes exploitive corporations and people to win out over responsible ones.
      We learned during the Industrial Revolution that corporations need government regulation to prevent them from impoverishing the vast majority of people.
