    Over all, I really liked this talk. Although, Judaism , Christianity and Islam are all horribly violent religions. It's actually the moderate people of those beliefs who have warped there meaning into something more acceptable to modern society. People like to claim that Westboro aren't Christians but they follow what is in the bible a lot closer than most. In the west, we don't talk about christian atrocities that often but they are no less horrific that the ones Islam has committed.

      Religion isn't what is violent but the type of people behind it who use them as as an excuse to further their own political agenda. Warmongers, Hatemongers who chose to divide us based on our varied beliefs. Strip away religion from any conflict and you will see those greedily fighting for power be it land, social status, money, a better place in the afterlife. What better way to make a war seem righteous when they create an us vs them mentality.
      Religion is not faith, religion is merely the outlet in which people try to sell their brand of faith. Faith is where we look within ourselves and to our community when all is lost.

      Disthron Yes and Christianity like any other religion is controlled by said people. A belief doesn't kill its the people and the zealotry behind them that do. Religion is actually supposed to evolve with the times,we adopt what works and move on or that is how it used to work. What was written then made sense for those times but not now. The same goes for Christianity and any other religion when it was new on the block. Unfortunately we live in age of Science and logic and there is nothing to replace the current religion so where stuck with an outdated mode with ideas that are archaic.

      I don't know where you get the idea that religion is supposed to move with the times. As that has never been the case. At which point it had to be pulled kicking and screaming every inch of the way.

    There are two things in this video that are suspect. The stereotype threat thing is a psychological theory, not physical science. Sana doesn't tell you that the same people who concocted that theory also came up with stereotype boost. As far as I can tell, Pakistani Americans work hard, succeed in business, attend college, and value
    education, etc. Therefore they should be driven mostly by stereotype boost, which encompasses most of their lives, and not by the handful of bigots who might call them a "terrorist" at some point. Because they already know that they are doing well, and that they are not terrorists. 9/11 shouldn't be allowed to become an excuse for anyone's low self-esteem, especially when many Muslim Americans succeed at levels above average.
    The second is the creeping politically correct agenda to make all forms of media as utilitarian and didactic as possible. The problem with that is that comic books are not
    an instructional medium. For generations, they have provided entertainment, fun and escapism. Possibly as a side benefit, some readers have been inspired to become artists and writers, but that's not a main concern of the medium. So there's no reason
    why comic books suddenly have to assume a main purpose of being "aspirational" and "empowering" when they never were before. Truthfully, that should be the job of
    the parents who are allowing the kids to read the comic books. If you want to have
    more female writers in comics, for example, then give your girls comic books to read.
    Comics don't need to become the kind of art that's involved in conscious social engineering, as if they were serving some kind of state agenda or sociological purpose, like Soviet social realism. Kids know when what they are reading is overly preachy and boring, which was why comic books' attempts at telling kids not to smoke or use drugs utterly failed in the '70s and '80s. If art is to be challenging, as well as provide aesthetic pleasure, then it should at least skewer things that are "sacred", not reinforce them. So far, the only thing I see that is challenging about the character of the new Ms. Marvel is that she does not wear a hijab. Other than that,
    she's just a teenage superhero, like Shadowcat or Jubilee, Gen 13 or the Teen Titans.

    • @carle7626
      @carle7626 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Manny Theiner Considering comic books have always been an intentional expression of hopes and fears, of right and wrong, with thorough explorations of justice, prejudice, hatred, love and politics I'm skeptical about the validity of your comment and your awareness or knowledge on comic books in general.
      The guys who made heroes like Superman, Batman and especially Stan Lee who created characters that were intentionally drawn from his internal sensibilities I'm struggling to understand where you're coming from.
      Yes comics were historically sold to youths and regarded as simple youth material. Yet, their creators were intentionally telling stories that reflected their contemporary environment, and deliberately shaped from their sensibilities, attitudes and politics of the world around them. It was not explicitly expected that a kid grasp all those concepts to be imbued with a sensibility about them.
      And while direct 'forced' messaging has always been a feature of the graphic lit tradition not all of it was induced by collaboration with governmental agencies or other interests. Numerous comics dealt with issues far more intensive than smoking, free and clear of outside interests. Which is not to paint comics as some sort of monolith of noble artistic merit. There are exploitative narratives and a dearth of stories that do intend to be nothing and represent nothing more than discardable entertainment.
      But returning to my main point. The most popular, durable, widely read comics have been ones that explicitly called to very relevant social topics without any greater agenda than fulfilling the concept of heroism, bravery and overcoming the limitations within society and our own humanity.
      Batman is both a deliberate play on vigilantism and social responsibility but also a reflection of the grey complications of corruption (gangsters and crooked cops etc.) and Im not just talking about modern or movie batman but long before the camp 60s show.
      Superman is a literal social agenda that has merely altered from a specifically American representative to be a more worldly concept but he retains the same precepts about humanity without government interference.
      The X-Men are from day one rife with intentional parallels not the least bit hidden to civil rights and race relations. Spider Man, Daredevil, Hulk, Fantastic Four. All of them bold faced incarnations steeped in social context with no attempt to conceal or shadowy government or other entity agenda making them that way.
      Even the characters you named at the end like Shadowcat, Gen 13, the fricking TEEN TITANS and fn Jubilee are literally born walking, fully intentional, not accident or government agenda expressions of social issues and concepts.
      I mean you could not have picked a more perfect modern example of what I am talking about than the fricking Teen Titans bro, like have you ever watched that show, like even one episode?
      And comic books are not agents of state agenda but they always were and have continued to be ever evolving elements of art which by the very categorization of art as art call into the personal and social context even if the audience engages it as escapism.
      So your entire statement flies directly in the face of the historic nature of comic books and the modern continuation of that history.

    • @mannytheiner887
      @mannytheiner887 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Carl E. I believe you misunderstood most of my entire post. Yes I am very familiar with comics. Yes I am aware that the iconic characters that were created are the literal embodiments of the hopes and dreams of the creators, who often represent typical American values and concerns. Yes I am aware that comics have often tackled social issues in a real, non-didactic manner. Yes I am aware that comics are not usually agents of state agenda. (Except when Obama meets Spiderman..? And furthermore you can find plenty of internet articles about how some people are concerned that political correctness is ruining comics). Not sure why you think I wouldn't know any of that. None of that was my point in my post.
      I made two points in my post: 1) Stereotype threat is irrelevant because, in the case of her particular ethnicity, stereotype boost should more than overwhelm it. She is playing deep identity politics here. 2) By doing so, she's revealing a preference for social engineering: We must imbue entertainment with a strong inculcatory message. The so-called "myth" she wants to unfold is not personal, it's an all-encompassing political way of thinking.
      Let's look at what the previous generation of comics have given the world. Superman is the benevolent American superpower righting wrongs around the world with its might. (Nerdy Jewish dreams of becoming the Ubermensch aside). Batman is the philanthropic capitalist who justifies illegality behind the scenes. Spiderman is America doubting itself because of the boomers and Vietnam, but still plugging along and not giving up because with great power comes great responsibility. You'd think that's some great stuff, right?
      But those are all values of previous generations. Today any Tumbrlist worth zer salt can take apart any of those icons as imperialist capitalist oppressive exploiters, tools of the kyriarchy, stooges of the One Percent who solve problems through violence and pay for all the superteam mansions (redistributionist synthpop band The Knife has a solution on "Shaking The Habitual": "by snatching a medium-sized mansion from an over-wealthy person you can give room to 25-34 homeless people"). I'm just commenting that Amanat's reliance on identity politics plays into that radical-leftist chic seeping across the Internet and into the media via such memes as, uh, pink kaffiyehs.

    Sorry Sana, Miss Marvel is not the new spiderman. Miss Marvel comics sell around 14,000 a month, while spider man sells 60,000 You are one of the main reasons that Marvel comics sales have never been lower. You lost your main audience, the hardcore fans, because you put one sided politics before good characters and story telling. We love theese characters more than you do, and it shows in every way. Keep putting your politics and your agendas before good stories that people love, you have destroyed Marvel comics, and the MCU is on its way.
