- In this new episode of cartalaap, we'll talk about the future of diesel cars in India citing the final report submitted by the Energy Transition Advisory Committee (ETAC) formed under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas Industry (MOPNG) on the recommendation of Govt of India. We, as a country, have laid out a plan to achieve carbon neutrality by the year 2070. And we need to several steps to achieve the set target. But what happens to existing and upcoming diesel cars, is what we tend to answer in this video.

Govt talks about policies like a developed Nation but when it comes to providing infra for EV, they are like 3rd World. These knee-jerk policies discourage brands to plan for the long term and hence we get average-researched products. If BS6 Phase 2 is successfully implemented then why there is a need to ban Diesel cars if brands are complying with it after putting lot of effort and money into the research. Give us Petrol, Diesel, Hybrid and EVs, let customer decide what he want to buy.

Not sure on what basis ETAC has recommended this 2027 deadline.
2035-2040 would have been a more achievable timeline. Rather than banning diesel vehicles, they must focus on pushing automakers towards plug-in hybrids. Instead of completely banning diesel, increase the tax on them and offer rebates on EVs or plug-in hybrids to allow consumers to choose themselves wisely.
to be honest, one thing is for sure, as people we have to suffer whether its EV or Hybrid, EV will have very low resale value as no one will buy a degraded battery plus in summer season many EV will catch fire .I am disappointed that the guys while making this report didn't thought about the safety aspect of EVs . btw ICN team is the only channel on youtube i trust, keep up the good work ..

Right now Govt. Should cut the tax on hybrid vehicles or incentivise the hybrid vehicles as these hybrid vehicles can check both pollution as well as range anxiety. Manufacturers can refine hybrid technology and can add bigger battery packs so that fuel economy gets even better.
They are no one to ban the IC or Diesel 🙏
Government will change and norms will change in every 5 to 10 years... in Indian politics nothing is permanent
Politicians have invested heavily in ethanol industry in there respective states, so to make money out of it they are forcing us to move to petrol vehicles.

EVs can't be practical due to range limitations even if they get charged in 10 minutes as the battery range gets depleted over time......lng can be a better alternative to diesel
Now railway freight mostly on electric but for road / air transportation we need high density powerpack for that now we don't have any alternative fuel like diesel / jet fuel so need to explore byofuel also unless untill we don't have reliable high power density pack electric. Swapping of battery would right choice but need to check feasibility.

I am so glad I got Aspire tdci BS4 in 2017 and got to experience that gem of an engine. Still running smooth. Now people will never get to experience torquey small cars that diesel hatchbacks and compact sedans used to offer.

@ravishankars6707 EVs cost double the price. Nexon EV which offers good torque costs 18-19 Lakh!! Aspire used to cost 8-10 Lakh!
Also, call me old fashioned but I love engines, I love the sound of them running, I love that grunt, they seem alive.
Maybe I'll like EVs some day but right now it just makes me sad that combustion engines will soon be a thing of the past.

I love this. Just as usual nothing comes out to be a practical of all this policies. I think the committee has made all these decisions in a AC room with no knowledge about the ground reality. Diesel vehicles banned completely by 2027 is very impractical. I wouldn't have been surprised if they suggested transforming all cars to flying cars so that there is no need to build roads and the pollution create from building roads can be avoided
How many car owners use buses for traveling??? Just think the government public transport infrastructure is very poor. I mean extremely poor. First, they just improve the same.

There should be choice on consumers to choice what they want,but government is forcing to go for ev's to all,not everyone likes ev's,i am diesel lover,if they don't change policies,then we should think to change them.
The thing is, diesel is very engaging to drive despite of looking kinda dissapointing on the spec sheet, since the torque rush that diesel gives just gives u a kick in the pants feel..
I own an ecosport titanium,
I have driven many petrol cars but they just dont feel very engaging to drive (except some like kushaq and polo gt which were breathtaking) ..
Yet, turbo power can give u that torque rush but it simply drinks so much that at one point it looks like a headache.. whereas with diesel, my ecosport gives around 16kmpl when i upshift at around 3.5 to 3.8k rpm.
And i have even gotten 20.4 in city too..
That's very true I too own a ecosport n trust me in Delhi heat driving the car in neck to neck traffic with AC it easily gives between 15.5-16.5

@lokesh3428 marazo is a very good car, but to find it in good shape and which can run for 3-4 years in NCR is quite challenging. It's good if you find a 2020 model

Good suggestions by committee to govt. . Is there any suggestions to govt. about electricity infrastructure which is most important. Till date many of the villages does not have electricity and few cities are still having power outages of 6-8 hrs. Govt should fix this loop hole first before going towards mandate of EV vehicles.
If diesel personal vehicles are meant to ban then why big companies like TATA MAHINDRA TOYOTA are selling promoting and implementing R&D in diesel engine SUVs and sedans? If every thing regarding diesel is meant for 10-12 years?
Infrastructure is again a big issue for EVs I am from western Rajasthan and before leaving city it is still customary to fill fuel tanks before starting trip,

Even companies were selling E10 vehicles till April 2023! Poor customers but profit for companies selling old stocks and govt getting tax and revenues from roadtax 15yrs and registration charges. All profit but loss for customer only 😊

With petrol 2 wheelers I am pretty confident anything under 500cc will be EV only.
But above 500cc motorcycles will never be banned completely as its impossible to make an EV 2 wheeler to go 250+ kms on a single charge, so long distance touring machines will still prevail with some city driving restrictions and flex fuel.
The use of E85 will be pretty common on all petrol ICE engines which in 2023 is a supercar specific tech.
All of this will not happen if Porsche succeeds with its already successful carbon neutral Synthetic fuel(petrol) which as of now is only hampered by cost and mass production issues, but it is readily available and working perfectly as an alternative to petrol.

there is no dependence on diesels in passenger vehicle segment. Manufacturers themselves are not investing in deisel tech anymore.
There won’t be resale value for EVs either, so why not buy Diesel as long as you get it 😉

This is great initiative but it needs a lot of investment. I am from uttarakhand and mostly in all uttarakhand i see cng station in dehradun that is also just 4 5. I belong to Kotdwar uttarakhand and there is not a single cng station. But let's see. Kya pta sab bhaut jaldi change ho jaye

I've a query about ethanol powered vehicles. What would be the mileage of E100 powered car/bike as compared to petrol powered engines ?
If we ever achieve that, the prices should ideally go down vis-a-via petrol only vehicles. In that scenario the running cost will be quite low.
