- Most of us Indians love manual cars, but some others prefer automatic cars as well.
Those who prefer manual over automatic, prefer these because of the fun and adrenaline rush these car provides whereas in India for a long time, automatic gearboxes were considered to be sluggish and boring
However, things have vastly changed now, automatics like torque converters and dct are serving enthusiasts in the petrolheads community
But with DCT transmission there is one big catch and that is related to its reliability issues
and in this video, we will discover exactly what is wrong with this gearbox and why there are so many recalls going on all around the world of the cars installed with this gearbox

I have a 7 speed DSG Octavia and a 6 speed DSG Skoda Laura. The transmission has been changed 3 times in the combined usage of 1 lakh km between the 2 cars. Each time the cost of replacement is greater than 1.5 Lakh rupees. Your analysis of this problem is perfect. The cost of spare parts in VW & Skoda is ridiculously high. I think they are not serious about staying in India just like GM & Ford.
If this is called a reliability of German brands, then what is the joke?😀
These are just imperfect cars sold in India just to make a profit they honestly dont care of service after selling the car
the cost is high because that gear came frm europe.....DSG is a addiction

@@vasant.talpada Reliability of German cars in Indian conditions is a joke. The ceiling upholstery of ALL premium German cars fail in 5 years . I have 3 such experiences. The company quotes 45K for each repair. The lens on the headlight becomes opaque in 5 years and each headlight costs 25K to replace. I have replaced 4 already. Like I said, the VW / Skoda group have a flawed spare parts pricing policy over and above their quality issues.
Maruti, Hyundai, and Toyota are more reliable products and exceedingly cheaper to maintain. VW / Skoda has sold till now on their perceived safety attributes. Soon customers will start getting heart attacks due to VW / Skoda repair bills.
TC - problem energy loss (low mileage)
DCT - problem design complexity
CVT - problem belt issues
MT - problem leg pain
problems will be there with every technology. the question would be which technology (TC,DCT,CVT) is easy to fix . less complicated and light on pocket .
In that case include IMT as well😂

I am really happy that *_VW_* has recently launched it's *_Virtus GT_* with a 6-speed manual gearbox... it's a good step which shows that they listen to their customers😊
It's a 6 speed manual and they launched it because Hyundai launched the Verna 1.5 turbo with a manual. VW already had the manual for their 1.5tsi engine since Slavia has it as well but didn't want to give it to Virtus GT to make it more "premium".
@@yoaashay oh right!!😁... it's a 6-speed manual, let me correct it 👍
7 Speed DSG and 6 Speed Manual, I have manual one
You do realise that it was available on the taigun, kushaq and the slavia for the longest right? VW decided to launch it only because they knew the Verna 1.5 was going to shake up the segment (which it has). Wouldn’t give them too much credit.

you are right. DSGs are not the same anymore, companies have made them slow for obvious reasons but, that still doesn't mean that they are more reliable. Have been using VW POLO DSG for 10 years now. Almost 145,000 KMS run, always serviced regularly and never Had a single problem. It all comes down to how well you take care of your car and yes, I've abused it at times by constant revs and abrupt speeds.

It's not about service...most of the Volkswagen owners service on time for the first 5 years..
It's not about simply service at regular schedule

I use Maruti Celerio AMT.
It never let me down. I took this car from Kolkata to Darjeeling, Pelling, Dooars, Ladhakh, Nainital, Munsiary and many other places.
Never faced any issue.
I drove more than thousand kilometres in 18 hrs with it, still no issue. On road very few cars overtake me, and many a time I kind of engaged in races and beat cars like Kia Seltos and i20. What I'm trying to say is that it responds pretty well.
People told me that you can't take to hills but I took it everywhere. While other cars got stuck in Ladakh and Uttarakhand, it never did.
It also gives me a millage of 24-25 km if I drive it at a constant speed of 70km/hr .
Go for AMT.
Probably seltos wasn't racing with you
@@manoja538 No, it was a race between Desire, I20 and Seltos.
By the way, what you are probably thinking is that Seltos has a distinct edge over Celerio in terms of acceleration and speed.
But in Indian highways many other things should be taken into consideration too.
It's about selecting right lane.
Great video ! torque converters are also used in CVT gear boxes. The torque converter is configured with an ATF and along with working like a clutch, is an important vehicle part for increasing torque and transferring powerful kinetic force when moving off. I think you are refereing to traditional automatic transmissions which are the expensive ones but are best in my experience. The main parts of an automatic transmission are the torque converter, planetary gearset, hydraulic controls, and the transmission fluid.
I drive celerio AMT and honestly have been very happy with it. Recently crossed 130000/8 yrs. It has not given me any issues as of now. I get a mileage of 18 with ac in city drive and best of 22 on the highway so far.
Coz amt is not automatic transmission..it is auto gear shift..it has a internal clutch

Your explanation was really good, every aspect was clear and easy to understand, and you have solved my confusion about DCTs because even i was suspecting the same heating issue on long drives in my VW Vento 1.2 DCT, whenever i asked the service technician he says oil change is required due to heating issues although its an European made car. I also own a old Mercedes Benz E-Class W112 which has a 9G-Tronic gearbox which is a torque converter and I have not faced any major issues with the engine till date. @@dibyanjannayak_9666 yes, from my personal experience, I don’t put the gearbox in Drive mode in bumper to bumper to bumper traffic. I put it in manual and 1st gear. That will make sure that the car doesn’t keep upshifting and downshifting between 1 and 2 constantly that saves a lot of clutch wear. When parking, don’t just hold the car in Park, also use the handbrake that way there is less stress on the clutch plates. You don’t have to put the car in park ever time you stop in traffic, just holding the brake and leaving it in drive is ok, too. It’s little things like that, which will prolong the life of the gearbox and also regular servicing will help. You need to think more to maintain a DSG compared to torque converter or manual but with little precautions, it’s the best gearbox you’ll ever experience, there is a reason why Porsches, Ferraris, Bugattis use DSG. After driving manual cars for last so many years, I am shifting to Automatic cars. After viewing many videos on different channels, I could realize that Torque Converter transmission is most dependable and in USA, more than 95 % cars use Torque Converter. I have booked Fronx Alpha automatic, which use Torque Converter. I have taken test ride of XL-6 (Torque Converter), Dzire AGS, Baleno AGS, Venue N line DCT, I- 20 N Line DCT and Fronx (Torque Converter). All the cars were driven with 4 passengers and AC. I could realize the difference between AGS (AMT), DCT and Torque Converter. XL-6 and Fronx gave very decent experience and very good average. Hyundai cars gave very poor average. Although I-20 was a good car but it's dated looks and DCT based transmission prompted me to look for a modern car with better transmission. That is why i chose Fronx. I should get my Fronx by 6th July.

BMW's 8speed steptronic torque converter is more smoother in shifts if compared to the DCT of Mercedes (as I test drive both 330i gran limousine and AMG A35 back to back) but it isn't as smooth as the DSG in Audi A6.
I am a proud owner of Ford Figo Aspire and Nissan Kicks Turbo, both of them come with manuals. Fun to drive, logical and practical also in our Country. I did try Volkswagen Polo GTI once, I liked it but somehow didn't convince me to buy it, maybe I am too old school for it. 😂

While the gear shifts and supper smooth , what I have understood is DCT can give you a mileage beyond a manual if driven properly on highway open stretch for long distance .
Yea DCT,s do get heated up if you abuse them in heavy traffic .
But what I have understood, if you drive it cautiously they don’t need any change to clutch / gearbox for lifetime .

I am using DCT in i20 from 3 years. I did not get over heat issue so far on hills or traffic. Going smooth
I’m using a VW with DCT, and love it. The only care I take is to put it in Neutral at signals. It’s basic common-sense, but still many don’t follow it.
I have seen people keeping in ‘D’ at signals, and then pressing on the breaks to keep it stopped. It will obviously create issues.
DSG is smart enough to disengage clutches while at red signal. Rest is just convenience of keeping break pressed or relax
Think about long term, it's a dry clutch unit. Maintain well ✌
@@thandermax I’m not sure of that. I agree that the ‘Auto Off/On’ function kicks in when the car is idling, however in the Indian traffic conditions, it can be irritating, so I prefer switching it off at times.
No dsg is not smart enough to disengage in traffic lights. It will still provide around 300 ma current to clutches while pressing brakes. Its always better to keep in neutral when the vehicle is not moving.
I loved the Torque converter and the 1.6L engine in the 2010 Vento, it was so smooth. But the fuel economy was abyssmal. My dad's car gave between 8 and 10 kmpl. He still kept driving it for 13 years because it was so good to drive. We sold it last month, along with our beater car, a Kwid, to buy a new Renault Kiger. The AMT is clearly a downgrade. But I'm thinking of getting a used Polo with the same 1.6L engine and manual transmission. Only it is so hard to find one as they are rare and enthusiasts are snatching them up as soon as they appear in the used car market.

My thoughts: We feel the rubberband effect in CVTs because our tax system doesn't allow a little better engine for these cars. Have been driving one of Honda's CVTs for more than 3 years and would place it at the top wrt its reliability and ease of drivability.
Same here - Honda city cvt works well
6:22 I tend to disagree, when you say a "torque converter is a transmission", it can be said as a part of transmission rather than a transmission itself. The reason being, torque converters allow the engine to spin independently of the transmission (planetary gear box) or the drive shaft (for e.g., Koenigsegg Regera, which runs without a transmission where the engine is connected to the drive shaft via a torque converter clutch). One can draw parallels with the clutch in the manual transmission cars.
So I would prefer to call Torque Converters as a part of transmission, rather than a transmission.
Thanks😅
A lot depends on how you drive an automatic, it is essential that you move to neutral as soon as you stop but many people keep operating it in drive mode. DSGs get overheated due to these driving habits as well as driving aggressively in high traffic areas. Be gentle with accelerator and most issues with automatics are resolved. I have driven many automatics in West and India, this is my experience.
You are experienced brother, here ppl just think of “Kitna Deti hai” and tin ka dibba but still there is still problem with DSG which many ppl go through
Can you share some more examples of right driving habits with a DSG
@@gtmsddrtheva DSG is not meant for bumper-to-bumper traffic. It is best to avoid driving DSG in traffic of cities where CVT and Torque Convertor work best. But if you do, switch to N whenever the car is still. Even with my torque convertor AT, i switch to N on traffic lights or whenever the car is still for more than a few seconds. It protects the internal clutch of AT transmission. Aggressive driving and too much braking will over-engage the transmission so best to drive with a light foot. Also if you drive for long hours, try to take a break after every few hours. These things should be more than enough

AMT only jerks when:
1. You are new to AT
2. You are new to AMT
3. If the car has been stationary for long, or in cold for long it will jerk in 1st gear for 2 seconds, only once.
4. If you press hard on the accelerator
5. If the gearbox or it's clutch has gone bad

I have used a wet clutch skoda superb DSG for 10 years with 1.5 lakh Km on the Odo.
Never had a single transmission problem.
So either I was lucky or it was because the car was gently driven and serviced on time through authorised service centre only. (And burned a big hole in my pocket due to service cost)
We recently sold the car and got a grand vitara AT which uses torque converter, let's see how this experience is in the long run.
I owned sonet 7 dct since 2 years, no issue as such, I drive my car as per the instructions provided by the company & auto experts. I live in hp. Thanks for sharing info.
Your indepth knowledge, easier way to explain
Superb Bro ...
Hattsoff...
Drove 1L KM on DSG absolutely no issue as explained in this video no drag & very smooth.
I had Audi tt and i drove it 2.5 lakh km’s and had zero problems with my duel clutch DSG.
And still going…
Really heart touching, ground reality & enlightening content,
I am a prospective buyer & am super confused between VW dsg or tc, (or shall I take honda cvt in consideration too) if I'm planning to keep the car for 15-20 years(with not so regular & significantly low running) then what's my BEST bet tc,dsg or cvt ?
Please help.....
Thank you.
Bhai accidentally I found your video, and now Im hooked to your channel ❤
This was a really informative and balanced video. But the title is very misleading.
Another fact - DSGs tuned for India - specially the DQ200 is only powered down in the strating - something they call crawl function.
We purchased a Celerio AMT for my sister and that is the only automatic we have ever driven as a family car. It's convenient in traffic, but the shifts are jerky and also inaccurate at times. The other car is a Honda Jazz MT and that's the preferred car for my dad and me. I am still comfortable driving an Automatic, but my dad will book a cab over taking the Celerio 😂
Yes , DCT has issues in Bumper to Bumper Traffic because it's not designed to work best in that fashion, But i think problem is not DCT, it;s ignorance and greed of companies. They should invest time and resources in testing and optimizing transmissions as per target audience and environment. I own venue n-Line with DCT and i was aware of such issues before buying it. So i know how to handle this car, i take precautions whenever it is required, like shifting to Netural When stopping car for long time is required. I have been in a 6 hour traffic jam, in Delhi, Hot summer Time. I never got any issues of heating or breaking down. Car makers has dialed down DCT shifting to work slow and generate less heat for mass markets. But it is still a better perfoming gearbox than TC or CVT. Companies should have optimised DCTs before making it live to public. They are doing it after large number of complaints from people. This is one big problem.
my 2017 polo 1.2 DSG has done 1.1 lakh kms. ZERO issues.
Maintain regular service and follow some basic common sense like switching to neutral/park at stops / signals.
the biggest mistake while using DSG is holding the brake at stops in D mode instead of switching to to N/P.
Manuals are also prone to overheating on slopes stop and go traffics.. I live in a hilly city, when there is bumper to bumper traffic where you have to stop and go on inclines with 15° to 22° sometimes upto almost 30° for more than a kilometers sometimes there's always someone who burn their clutch. Usually someone with loaded vehicles, like cabs or Pickups with goods.
In my opinion, Torque converter is the best, if you can live with its biggest flow i.e. low fuel efficiency.
i think the issue of low fuel efficiency in tc is not anymore, brezza with manual and with automatic tc have almost same fuel efficiency
Hi, I own a Skoda Superb 2012 1.8 TSI Manual Transmission. Never really thought it made sense to use an Automatic in Mumbai's crazy traffic, and then have Auto-issues like Locking, Heating ups etc. The Manual TSI is butter smooth.
I am using VW Vento DSG 1,2 TSI (Petrol) 2018 model. Touchwood! Doing ok so far....On one hand I am conscious about its risk and on the other, it's really fun to drive...Hope it lasts!
I have the 3rd and 5th Gen Honda city CVT.. old one for almost a decade now. have had lots of fun on both and the transmission hasnt ever given up. going strong! Just hoping for turbo vtec from honda...
Didn't 3rd Gen come with TC?
