Hey, I'm a developer on the project Terror Strike. We're thankful for the time Richter gave us in the video as a spot, and overall we're pretty happy on how the video turned out. Hopefully this can spark some interest in our project.

Valve: *wanted to encourage players to change weapons*
Also Valve: *added laser sight upgrade*
Even without the laser sights I would still have my specific weapon to use, I like accuracy over damage so if I have the AK47 and see the M16 I would grab it for better moving and shooting
i just go for the gun that looks nicer

Okay I love that at 12:38, the CEDA worker's other two iterations were Dwight Schrute (The Office) and Maurice Moss (IT Crowd).
Have you tried turning it on and off again?
the right side one almost looks like Dr brule funnily enough. maybe not in body shape but the face sure looks it

just saying but the fact we didn't get the cabin in the woods dlc is such a shame, especially since it was like 80% complete
Yeah. We even got the special infected as cameos in the movie. Shame that it never came to light.
i've always wondered what could of been since they prolly would of have made new infected just for this dlc which would of been sick ngl
Bro wtf is stopping valve from finishing this stuff their work culture seems to be 'do whatever' so we just need to go convince like 1 of them to go finish it lmao
@@WelcomeToDERPLAND ngl in this case it probs was the movies fault but valve does like to create stuff and then never use it lol
Damn shame.
seeing Dwight from The Office
and Ross from IT Crowd as concept art for a survivor in Left 4 Dead 2 took me so heavily off guard you have no idea
Another fact you missed in this video is that Left 4 Dead was inspired by the Bill's hat in Team Fortress 2
The ap-sap was so popular that valve gave him an official name (Wheatley) and made an entire game for him
“Tell me this boy ain’t for real.”
- Coach, L4D2
@@donpollo3154Un video mas mi gente me encanta esta vaina
Another Another fact is that Soldier being the most popular class in TF2 inspired the United States Military to make their own version of it
another fun fact! the iconic character of Saxton Hale inspired the creation of Australia
I really like that common infected sitting animation, gives the impression there's a tiny bit of humanity still in there.
They talk about this in the dev commentary. It’s the reason they also have the zombies stumble around, cough, puke, fight amongst themselves and writhe in pain. The infected still sit on the ground btw.
Basically they wanted the infected to still be human. They wanted to exemplify that these aren’t undead. They are human beings whose minds are are warped.
This is also why all the special infected west like ripped clothes. They’re mutated humans. While other games will have a monstrosity that doesn’t even wear clothes, like resident evil and back 4 blood.
I imagine it went unused after they moved to the director system for zombie spawning rather than preset zombie spawn points. If they wanted to use the animations, they'd have to integrate zombies spawning on chairs into the director system, which probably wasn't worth it, since they'd have to run checks on props instead of map geometry/navigation meshes.
@@TapWTapWthis has to be it
I love the dedication they had to the animations too
check out Wowsuchgaming on the analysis on the infection, the person they were isn't gone just morphed because of what the infection does to them, hence why they aren't called zombies but rather infected
zombies are people who died then came back
which is why there are so many animations and why they were animated like that
They still act very human in the game, when they are idle.
I'd like to also say that my little brother would be so scared by the witch to the point where he was scared of his sister who had blonde hair at the time.
that’s badass, i was a child once too
Idk man witch kinda hot
Why ppl scared of her

Fun fact about the Cabin in the Woods promotion, it went actually went both ways, and if you pay attention in the movie can see some of the Special Infected make a cameo in the movie.
1 Minute and 6 Seconds in and I can confirm this is a Richter Overtime classic.
The most Richter Overtime video of all time
Fun fact that you might know from either the developer commentary, or the Back 4 Blood comparison video. Bill’s original designs looked way older and the developers thought he looked too old and fragile to be killing zombies. So they tweaked his design more and more until they got the one we know today, which while being older, can still excel at combat.
one thing that pop my interest is. did the dev still use NamVet as bill original backstory during the beta model. or it's like what happen with Nick backstory during the development
The Cabon in the Woods tie-in is also fun because you can actually see a Witch, Hunter, Smoker, and Tank IN THE FILM.
In that big zoom-out scene where you see all the monsters, those four are right there in their own boxes. I showed this to someone on the DVD just last week!
Glad you pointed this out. I was going to say the same thing.
Left 4 Dead 2 was THE video game I played with no internet at 13 years old. I put so many offline hours into just playing through the game with bots. 10/10 masterpiece. The best part was that they gave me the game for free in 2014-2015 for Christmas!
If you got the game for free on pc for Christmas, would you be down to help me and some buddies get the Ghost of Christmas Present achievement?
Wow hearing "Your Brains" sent me through a wild nostalgia trip in my head.

12:38 thats literally richard ayoade. he plays moss in IT Crowd, and a lot of other british stuff. weird that he just comes up and isnt mentioned in this video. he was also supposed to voice act Wheatley in portal 2, but he was busy that week so they got someone else. im kinda sad he didnt make it into either of these games
There's also the guy from the US office for some reason
Perhaps one of the best l4d beta coverage videos I've seen. Well done my dude
🏏
The “CEDA worker” concept art… that’s just Dwight from the Office and Moss from The IT Crowd. Someone at Valve is a fan of British office comedies as well as 50 Cent!
Beta Louis looks like a character straight out of TTG's The Walking Dead
he looks like Lee's cousin
I remember Left 4 Dead 3 files being found and rumored waaaay before Alyx. Can't believe it died.
I guess you could say we almost got left for dead
I really hope we get a Source 2 port of L4D2 at some point
People can dream
At least this is a more realistic expectation over L4D3
Just had a meltdown week ago, because I couldn't complete Chernobyl campaign with mods and without crashing. This game needs straight port to Source 2 or at least x64 support.
I REALLY hope they dont make it replace the current version, that would suck for my sucky laptop already
But hope they dont replace the current version or make the game too bright like cs-2 did.
14:57 Some special infected actually made it into the movie "The Cabin In The Woods". During the presentation of the monsters you can actually spot the: Witch, tank, Boomer, i think theres 1 more i don't really remember but they are there.
Witch, Tank, Hunter, and Boomer
Finally, a Richter Overtime video on Left 4 Dead. I've been waiting for this!
Excellent video, Richter! I love hearing about more Valve cut content stuff (even if I've never actually played any L4D).
Left 4 Dead is one of my favourite games of all time I swear
Left 4 dead is a cult classic , i remember my cousin playing it when i was 16 we played Co op and it was the most fun ive had playing a game to this date , I played as Bill because of his signature lines such as " Reloading " and he looked like a badass. We got scared facing the witch , we enjoyed the lore and came up with all sorts of theories surrounding the green flu , i remember sacrificing myself during the " sacrifice campaign " knowing full well it was the end of bill. Emotional stuff , in the second game i played as ellis as he was a joker and had funny lines , we played the dead centre campaign and got the rare spawn of Jimmy gibbs junior and we thought it was the best thing ever. I love the franchise and even now at age 31 i am skeptical and yet hopeful of a third game in the not so distant future.
I thought I had seen most of the concept art for the L4D games, but the ones of Rochelle with her first hairstyle (super cute) and the infected filled with rats (super GROSS) are totally new to me!! Same with the really early L4D2 survivors.
I love L4D/L4D2 content! not many makes good videos about them. But i really liked this one. Great video.
Good video man, I really enjoyed watching this and learning about the cut concepts of Left 4 Dead
its crazy to see bill basically never changed that much
That "Byeah" at 6:22 got me so hard xD! Really well done RO
I played Dam It, loved that short but crazy map, the crescendo horde events are all insane, but there is a good amount of items in the way to help players. Really like the event where the dam fills with water, and you have to stay near the door before it closes (or your charatche and any zombies, even witches or tanks, automatically dies). Also it finishes right at the start of Blood harvest, a nice way to perfectly chain the two campaigns!
14:20 best charger design I have ever seen, the one we got is great but I would've loved this charging ape looking guy
Another interesting thing about the cabin in the woods crossover is you can actually see some of the special infected from left 4 dead in the elevator scene. Cabin in the woods was originally supposed to release in 2009 so I definitely think it was a possibility or at least talked about
12:38 hey i dont know if you noticed but the guy in the middle is actually identical to a character called "Moss" from the IT crowd, a british comedy. just stood out to me instantly as a brit @RichterOvertime
yeah and Dwight Schrute from the US version of The Office is on the left
Turtle rock studios are great at coming up with good ideas but they suck at executing it. we’re lucky that valve stepped in
*were bro were
@@Tyler11_ what
@@Tyler11_it’s actually we’re… no were… we’re as in we are

They were great at executing it. They were bought out by Valve in 2008, became Valve South, and were still the sole developer of the original Left 4 Dead. Valve only stepped in for L4D2.
this is a great vid, I keep goin back for rewatches. good stuff
Awesome video on Left 4 Dead! Left 4 Dead is one of my favorite games and I'm glad you're giving it some spotlight.
17:04 I totally agree with the need for a Source 2 port of Left 4 Dead 2!! It would breath so much new life into this game, I hope that Valve will do it 🤞
This game is more than 10 years old, but people still interested every time new video about Left 4 Dead 2 comes out. Proof how great this zombie game is
Great video. I learned a lot about one of my favorite games!
12:38 lol the ceda worker on the left looks like Dwight from the office.
Richter always makes videos about something I asked myself long time ago but no video was there to answer it, truly it’s my pleasure to support this channel and the videos 😄
unlike the half life 2 beta, i am actually glad we didn't get the l4d original survival design.
also come to think about it. there's no way to us to know if the hl2 beta would've been a smashing hit just like hl2 we got today. maybe everyone would hate it and think it was another dark grim post 90s 2000s generic dystopian future game (like every other fps at that time look like that description)
Yes, yes it would. But half loge 2 fans insist it would be the bestest game ever and is superior the release version
@@CharaGonzalez-lt7yw i think the beta is neat and all but man, like almost every game change so much in development. So ideas just don't work dispite how cool they might appear to be. After all. That the point of testing and repeating it until you get something solid.
Half life 2 beta is so wanted because we are not getting hl3 and because it was a leaked. It's a myth and that what so appealing about it.
I've been waiting for this ever since u joined TS! Thanks for the shout out man.
Holy moly another great video by richter overtime can this day get better? Keep up the great work❤
12:37 ok but how did richter not mention that those are literally moss and roy from the IT crowd and Dwight Schrute
The old character designs look nice honestly
The designs of every character and map looked very nice. I'm sad that Valve changed it. I'm not personally a fan of the game's new art style, but you can definitely tell that they rushed it in the first game.
Nope. They dont.I feel like the game wouldnt much memorable if the character was like that.Whats funny is that most of the concept turtle rock had was put into Back 4 Blood.Which you know turned out to be sht.
I think I saw some of the early concept survivors on the workshop before. Excellent work!
Genuinely a fantastic video, nothing but excellence for the entire 18:02
Glad you enjoyed it!
I actually really, really, really like these old designs. More than release ones if I'm being honest. They look more worn, ragged, and perfectly fit more in line with what you'd expect from post-apocalyptic survivors making it in the North-Eastcoast of the United States. They're not nearly as iconic, sure, but they have a particular charm that I can't get over.
12:39 So the survivors would originally be joined by Dwight Schrute, Maurice Moss and Dr. Steve Brule?
Funny thing about the Cabin in the woods crossover: in the film itself there's a scene where the main character is in a glass cube and as it zooms out you can see (if I remember correctly, it's been a number of years since I watched that film) a witch, a boomer and a tank in their own cubes.
Great video, man! You're gonna be big one day, I know it.
Fun fact: Another one of L4D's scrapped names was "Dead Run" according to a TRS dev.
Richter never fails to clap my cheeks
12:38 is fucking hilarious cause it’s got Dwight from the office and the dude from the IT crowd
17:14 Najbardziej satysfakcjonujące I needed jakie słyszałem do tej pory.
One small thing, Zoey and Francis were supposed to be a couple in some early drafts of the scripts.
Still love Bill's old design, also surprised that I've never seen L4D workshoppers make some of the concept art survivors playable (would probs be a lot of effort, but still, would be cool)
5:25 +1 for unlocking a decade old forgotten memory of mine by featuring this Louis clip
Its kinda cool how most of the cut content like the extra healables and the cut asian nurse, made it into back for blood
I don't know if there's enough info on it for a full video, but a video on the Japanese exclusive L4D2 arcade game would be really cool.
A TH-camr by the name of punchy released a video about 5 months ago on the topic of the Japan exclusive L4D2. Worth a watch if you haven’t already.
@@SuperSwamper69 Oh okay, thanks for the recommendation!
@@SuperSwamper69 That was a great video; exactly what I wanted. Again, thanks for the rec.
13:19 I can already see the Source engine would STRUGGLE to render out all the rats, more especially with 2007-2009 hardware.
i think it would've been a particle meant to resemble rats but in a super low quality state to the point where itd look like brown mush coming out of him.
Dang, that was really cool man. Bravo!
Glad this Fire dropped on my recommendation dropping a sub.
So basically in the L4D beta:
Louis: Dirtier + hairier
Francis: Dirtier + hairier
Bill: Even dirtier + even hairier
Zoey: HOODIE + HOTTER!!
You're telling me we could've had Dwight from the Office in L4D2??? I'm glad they made the changes they did to the characters. They're incredibly iconic despite looking (for the most part) like average ppl. The other ones felt like they leaned into tropes/stereotypes quite a bit.
I'd rather have Moss over Dwight. Either way give me a Left 4 Dead game with those 3 and one normie as cast members and I'm sold.
I couldn't help but comment about the Cabin in the Woods crossover that you mentioned. Even though the game content itself was scrapped, there is a scene in the movie where if you look closely enough you can actually see a Tank in one of the cascading glass prison cells with all the other horrible things they had locked up. I even think there were more infected from the L4D series there too but to me the Tank was the one that stood out the most.
Edited: Yeah, this was pointed out a few days ago in another comment. Sorry for the redundancy!
Thank you for the informative video, kind sir
HDTF is so good it left Valve speechless
15:04 Didn’t the movie still feature six of the special infected?
Yes
Ngl the outro song took me back, way back. And perfect season for it!!
I'm itching for some left 4 dead content man, I'm itchy! The back for blood has ruined my high and now I'm wondering if we'll ever EVER get such a game like left 4 dead. Cuz the cut content is really wicked
The left 4 dead beta looks more finished than any todays beta
How come no body is talking about the message that popped up in the top left corner right before 16:00
I KNOW😭
Thank you for talking about this. I love the beta and want to play this so bad lol
Re: Your Brains at the end is a nice touch haha
i think "DAM IT" was cut not because of its difficulty, as its fairly easily could be fixed, but because of its idea being a bit weird and valve having not enough time to finish it. Still could be a visualy good compaing with some game-design changes, my guess is thats what valve was struggling with.

I remember seeing those early concept characters for L4D in game magazine years ago. Man it’s been a minute
As for cut content, I remember laser sights and crawling already in the game... specifically the first, just "locked".
This is why some modified dedicated servers have them... it's not adding "new" features, just simply "unlocking" them.
Crawling was always in both games, just disabled. There's even some L4D2 workshop mods unlocking it.
I just wish Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 had more modability for additional weapons and special infected. I feel like this would have prolonged both games lifespans even more. Never understood why it wasn't as moddable as Gmod and some of the earlier titles. Seemed like a step back in that regard, while a lot of things were an obvious step forward. Excellent video by the way.
Hey richter, im one of the playtesters of terror strike, and ive gotta say, thanks for making this video ❤
Im really happy the survivors got changed, having them all look as though they just stepped out of their everyday lives into this hell makes the game feel all the more frantic and desperate. Great stuff
