Emesis Blue is a fascinating TF2 movie made in SFM, that has puzzled fans of the game for over a year now. In this video I try my best crack at understanding it.
Thanks @FortressFilms for providing a word. Thanks @Dominzki for providing the animation work. Thanks @PurpleColonel for helping me write some of the analysis. Thanks @elmaxoTF2 for the cameo.

THE APPLAUSE SCENE I KNOW WHY THIS IS! This is because surgeons back in "ye ol' days" would do surgeries in public spaces in a sort of showmanship. This is him doing a "successful" surgery... in a very grizzly manner.
Ah yes, the Beheading Procedure™️, once commonly used as a cure for migraines.
could also be a loose reference to the "congratulations" scene from neon genesis
also could be himself trying to convince that he did the right thing by killing another person
Well that or it furthers the main theory where these masked men are his evil side applauding his good side for commiting murder or getting a kill
In this situation fritz would be the sleepwalker and the doctor atbthe same time

Soldier asking Fritz "who gave you that order?" is a REALLY important piece of character writing. Most people would've asked "why" or "how" but the first thing Soldier wants to know (and assumes exists) is chain of command and responsibility.
I want to say something about Jeremy's tooth dream.
In Russian folklore, dream about your teeth falling out is a sign that one of your loved ones is going to die very soon.
I never saw anyone talking about it. I don't know if it was intentional, but if it is, that is a neat detail.
That’s pretty interesting. Is there a story behind it or is it just something that kind of emerged?
that makes sense because it what happens to scouts mom(she died)
@@cosmicsloth5002 There are lots of different books about dream interpretations from different authors who are usually wizards, witches or fortune tellers of some sort. The most popular one from Vanga tells about this sign. Russian people are very superstitious and it has become very popular among the folk so now its more of a folk sign than an interpretation of a witch.
If we use other cultures then when we see the footage of the RED Medic its November 1st aka Day of the Dead and from what I've seen people do celebrate it in New Mexico as well and its contrast to what is shown is interesting to say the least.
Oh damn.
Medic’s first name being Fritz can also be a reference to soldier literally calling him that in some of his domination voice lines
When I saw his name as fritz, I instantly thought of that soldier voiceline. I'm sure its because fortress films wanted the dialogue to be natural
Fritz was also a derogatory word that was mainly used by the Red Army in relation to the Germans (mainly soldiers) during WWII
IS THAT A FNAF REFERENCE????

Important detail you missed here: Soldier is choosing to humour Fritz. When Demoman looks at him, he returns the gaze with a dead-serious expression.
This is also hinted at by the fact they later both comment on not trusting Fritz at all. Soldier was locked in a metal box with a crazy man, and prefered to laugh with him than alienate himself from a potential enemy.

I think Emesis Blue is just another example of just how flexible and influential Tf2 as a whole is.
The one thing that came to mind was Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within...
*HEAR ME OUT*
When that movie came out there was a fear that movies were going to be replaced with digital actors. The idea came from a plan the film producers had of films assets, specifically the model of the main female lead, for future projects.
If you know anything about that movie it was awful and it bombed. However years later we have the TF2 mercs who have become an adaptable cast of digital actors capable of playing any kind of part the human imagination is capable of giving them. Comedy, Horror, playing as TH-camrs, Surrealism, and so on.
It's just kinda funny to me that years ago their was an idea by Hollywood to create virtual actors that could be reused for film roles and without that ever being the goal we have a group of probably the best and most versatile team of digital characters used for almost that exact purpose exclusively by regular people.

One of the most eerie shots in my opinion is the applause after The Butcher's death, not only because of the concept and scene, but because of how creepily static the audience's bodies are while applauding. It's all just so... unsettling.
Also I love the detail of The Smoker having no hesitation or pause while playing Russian Roulette, really shows how far into insanity he's gone, either he knows he won't die or doesn't care if he does.
The Spy is such a weird character to me. On the one hand he's conniving and smart, on the other he's a complete klutz who keeps tripping himself up in the most ridiculous ways. He keeps coming out on top despite all the ridiculous blunders he makes. His characterisation almost reminds me of a pagan trickster figure. He keeps getting himself into the stupidest shit and yet always manages to pull himself out somehow.

small detail - over the course of the film, soldier's eyes are seen much more, and by the end he doesn't even have the helmet
could show how his eyes are open to blu's true activities, although that seems kinda surface-level.
While that does sound convincing and might also be correct, another part is that humans mainly symphatize over the eyes therefore by showing more and more of him he becomes more sympathetic.
Surface level but effective
Could also mean that slowly he is exiting his soldier mindset, approaching a more grounded life as he sees things more in a civilian way, understanding the horrors near him and actually trying to end them, as he does by killing blueman.
Man that's perfect
Maybe showing his loyalty or military mindset?
It took me almost a year to realize that the endless time you spend in the respawn machine is a nod to the fact that in-game, when you die and wait to respawn it feels like an eternity

14:33 Just wanted to mention that I think the soldier who's eyes are bleeding (and probably missing) is another ref to The Jaunt, where the kid claws their eyes out after being put through the teleporter. The soldier likely did something similar to that while inside the respawner.

A popular theory regarding the Undertaker is that he’s the personification of death.
1. Lacks any allegiance or loyalty to any side of the gravel war.
2. The Undertaker is heavily associated with death, he drives around in a stolen hearse and wears a plague doctor mask.
3. The Undertaker only appears to people who have committed murder. Such as Spy, Medic and the Soldier.
4. At one point, the Undertaker is seen to playing chess with Medic. Possibly a reference to 1957 film “The Seventh Seal” where death promises the protagonist if he can beat him in a game of chess, he will spare his life.
Does the Spy not see the Undertaker when he takes back the briefcase?

You know (maybe it's just a coincidence), looking at all of those zombie versions of mercs, it makes me think that all of this is a giant reference to Left 4 Dead
The zombies in Respawn room - Common infected
The Creature - Jockey
The Hunter - Hunter
The Smoker - Smoker
Stalingrad - Tank
i hate you for suggesting this
stalingrad is a reference to mr x and nemesis from resident evil
I have always thought about the implications of "merging" the memories of two instances that are forced to fight against each other. Like the Blue Medic and the Red Medic are essentially the same medic with mutually exclusive objective.
The people in the church applauding Fritz made me think that it was like they were congratulating him for murdering someone, and now he's just as corrupted as the man he just killed. But that doesn't make sense, since he killed the brothers before that. It could just be his psychosis getting worse and not even have a deeper meaning, too.
I imagine that the folks in black are the souls who's torture at the hands of the respawn machine Fritz oversaw. Taunting or celebration is unclear. They could be glad to see one freed from the cycle.
I think, if you take the idea that Fritz is the past version of the undertaker, you can interpret this scene as him crossing the threshold to become the undertaker.
@HagalazI That makes sense. I also thought that maybe they're The Butcher's victims and they're cheering that he's dead or something
Maybe it’s like a ceremony.
I also think its notable that the smoker is wearing the same mask that the church men wear at the funeral, but I unfortunately don't have the brain power to connect it to anything.
i like the detail that despite his position in BLU and attitude, Jacque gets made out to be extremely incompetent throughout the story, which makes it seem pretty clear that his success wasnt for any actual merit, only for his willingness to do whatever was asked of him by Archibald.

"Our true enemy has yet to reveal himself" Is obviously about MANN brothers. Also medic kill butcher applause is the end of movie where he kills spy. Also The Undertaker being future Fritz is a great idea.
I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure Fritz's revival in the Conagher scene isn't because of this "Respawn Core," but seemingly something related to the comics canon. The "surgically attached souls" that people goof a lot about seem related to it, because of a detail I remember someone pointing out. In the scenes where Fritz is in a coffin, the candles seem to represent how many souls he has left, because there's less in the later one. That feels way too specific to be a coincidence.
You reminded me, Fritz ends up in coffins TWICE. First is his dream/hallucination where he wants out, second he does it on purpose to get the drop on Spy and steal the briefcase.
Also one thing I wanted to add onto this (with the scene at 49:50 where he talks about the McGuffin being the "respawn core") is that how I think there's a detail a lot of people missed. You know how in the movie, most of the characters actually have their gadgets like soldier's rocket launcher, pyro's fire resistance (I mean, even though he's more of a charred corpse he still survives being set on fire), and spy's invis watch? I think the reason why he comes back is because of a thing medic has. Compared to every other class, he's the only one with regenerative abilities. So personally, I think he comes back because of that ability he has. It does also explain why he is the only one that can come back on his own, while for heavy (or Stalingrad) someone else had to bring him back.
true. but what about heavy? SPOILER he dies, then he comes back thanks to the red medic, then gets a screwdriver in his eye, then gets rocket jumped and finally dies under conagher slaughterhouse's ashes.
bro has to be indestructible
@@Dxuki well, the red medic presumably has access to the same tech that the blue medic had, which could include whatever is doing the healing. if the same stuff that is keeping medic alive is also going through heavy, a lot of the stuff makes sense. The blue medic and the heavy can take small arms fire, as seen with demo and soldier's confrontation with the heavy outside the armory. Him taking explosions could be explained with him just being beefier in general, and probably reducing the severity of the wounds, allowing them to regenerate somewhat (notice that he still has burns, but not any open wounds that a fragmentation grenade would inflict). But that regeneration still has a limit, as both still die, due to severe wounds that not even regeneration could fix, like a severe car crash or an entire building falling on top of you.
comics aren't canon to Emesis Blue
it was only referenced (i.e.: the Gravel Wars still exists) but the entire plot is completely original apart from horror movie references
If you pause at the right time, you can see a photo of president Lyndon B. Johnson giving Soldier the Medal of Honor. Implying that he served in either the Vietnam war or the Korean war.

1:51:26 another thing about the respawn core bringing medic back stronger is that he isn’t being sent through a respawn machine, which I would imagine would not directly give a individual access to the respawn core, but instead dilute it down somehow or only give them part of the core’s power. Not only is medic the only one intersecting with the respawn power, as he’s the only one to die by it, but he is directly next to the core each time. The only time he isn’t dead directly by it is in the coffin, which is why I believe he came back weakened/paler and more gaunt
Something that I noticed about Emesis Blue that no one else seems to mention (except great blue) is that the slaughter house has Impossible Geometry. Like you said in the video, the church has windows to the outside despite being deep underground, but also the elevator itself can’t work in the way seen in the film. The elevator would have to go through the Sewage Tunnels for it to work but doesn’t because otherwise the scene with Soldier and Sniper couldn’t take place
Yeah the respawn machine might not be affecting just time but space as well
Yeah, the entire place gives off house of leaves type vibes.
Noneuclidean physics is something ain't it?
Emesis Blue genuinely changed my perception of BLU being look-alikes of RED to being look-alikes of RED and getting the short end of the stick on everything
I mean the do canonically get screwed over too. It's just that they get brought back via demonic legal loopholes
canonically, BLU does win as often as RED does. The Meet The Team videos are apparently RED propaganda and BLU was supposed to get interview videos but the interviewer was assassinated. It's most likely just for marketing as red honestly stands out more and looks better on most of the mercs.

I think it's a testament to this guy's writing that he can turn TF2, just about the goofiest FPS out there, into a horror movie so mind-bending and legitimately creepy that people put it above a lot of Hollywood-produced horror.
Which is sad considering Hollywood used to care about filmmaking and art, which is what horror is in my opinion, art, beautiful twisted and terrifying art, but it’s very clear that Hollywood no longer cares about good films and good art and now only cares about shoving political ideologies(aka woke)down peoples throats, my hope is one day Hollywood will stop being overly political(or trying to brainwash the masses with social engineering)and start making good movies once again, but I know that’s just wishful thinking, at least we will always have old movies to watch.
@@user-en6jw2cc4nbut Hollywood had always done this. I do agree that there's been a doubling down on politics in entertainment because of, as gaming animators pointed out, massive uproars because they're not the "correct" ideas of the modern day, as well as a decline in terms of execution and quality. But we do need these ideals shown in entertainment, even if they're not correct, to understand why they're not entirely good in society. And whilst there has been a sorta decline in terms of quality in entertainment, doesn't mean it's all just trash or mid slop, because it isn't. You just gotta actively find it now because most major studios won't promote it.
what i like about Emesis Blue is that it proves that you don't need a high budget, celebrity voice actors, or an entire team of professional animators to make a successful and valueable movie like this, what excites me about Emesis Blue is all the people who will gets inspired to make their own movies.
I will consider the team behind emesis blue professional or at least REALLY experienced animators
Never heard of Emesis Blue before, but I think Jocque's transformation into the smoker is likely a reference to Harvey Dent's transformation into TwoFace, particularly The Dark Knight's version of it
What if that failed respawn photo of the person on fire at 1:24:40 was the butcher? I mean it would explain why he is STILL burned after countless respawns. Perhaps because the malfunction even the respawn machine can’t fix it
The fact this movie was entirely made in SFM makes the final movie all the more impressive ! And of course the characters, soundtracks, storytelling and references are just masterful.
Not entirely* some 3rd party animation sources such as Blender was used aswell. The filmakers attached the (SFM) tag so they could appear first on searches.
Not entirely but in large amounts probably. For example the blood pouring out of the Respawn machine. SFM isn't capable of simulating fluids. However SFM or not, it is most definitely looks like a SFM animation. Those sharp edge lights for example is something almost exclusively done by SFM Animators in SFM. So even if it isn't made in SFM (idk maybe it is) it at the very least has the dying spirit of SFM, you could say the Legacy of SFM, a program that is nowadays mostly superseded and many people don't even bother learning anymore.

One thing I find interesting is how much media starts as a horror, then becomes comedy. Even the SCP Foundation states that it is easier to write horror than joke entries!
And as we Valve fans know, Half-Life 2 and Team Fortress 2 began with a much darker theme, and Portal 1's and Portal 2's difference in tone is clear as day.
Some go vice versa, like Warhammer 40k which began as a more comedic project (with similar parody of patriotism like what Helldivers has), until it became dark and gritty one.
I'm writing this at the point when Richer mentions the early version of Meet The Medic, which was more dark than the one we got! (and I do notice that most examples here are Valve related. Someone help me)
In the history of Greece the tragedy was popularised first and I was only after that that people started making comedies. It's one of those duality things where you can't have comedy without there first being tragedy.
It makes sense. Horror largely relies on a fear of the unknown. The more time you spend in a horror world, the more you know and the less likely you are to be freaked out. Inversely, I will gladly rewatch old comedy stories over and over because the jokes are still funny. After you beat GladOS, another giant robot isn’t scary, so the story either has to do a ton of legwork to integrate a bigger, scarier enemy into the story, or just drop the horror aspect
You say that and 2 of the most popular joke entries are one sentence
"The Undertaker" Being Fritz after he Respawns? That makes alot of sense actually, plus the Plague doctor mask is a Medic Comedic.
1:28:47 the soldier class is most picked because of how generic his class is. this is also because soldier (aka a grunt, infantry) is a starting tier, a reference to the ranking system of actual military such as private, pfc, sergeant, etc., a class which you start unspecialized. archibald wanted "an army," which consists mostly of infantry with a variety of potential skills. that is why there where so many dead soldiers, and why infantry is a starting tier, its basic. Another gem of an analysis, glad to have been able to produce animations for it!
I would just like to point out, that the song Maynard plays on the Piano was actually changed at some point.
The current version plays Blackbird by the Beatles; but the original release played the Toreador March. Given the song is about risking one's life for the entertainment of others while bull wrangling; and that the glory is worth the risk of life... it fit a lot more given what Fritz was trying to do; breaking into the Slaughterhouse to save Jeremy despite the obvious risk of death by the Conaghars; and heck... even the meaning of the song vs what Fritz was doing. It's all about Bull wrangling; while Fritz failed to grab the Wrangler and had to improvise, risking his life further... all for the entertainment of the audience watching.
I'm guessing it was changed at some point due to either copyright issues, or because the Toreador March commonly nowadays gets associated with Five Nights at Freddys and a lot of people were specifically commenting about that.
Fritz and Jeremy like the FNAF night gaurds
So that bit from The What Show's analysis about Medic hating FNAF wasn't entirely wrong after all

1:39:55 Based on your theory of Fritz healing back thanks to The Respawn Core in the suitcase, I suppose that the pale looking Fritz we see is actually normal due to the fact his corpse was away from the Respawn Core for sometime now and only revived himself thanks to Spy bringing it to the funeral. Even if the respawn method brings back a corpse in time, since his corpse was away from it for sometime, it would explain that it couldn't revert enough back in time giving him this appearance. Unfortunately it doesn't explain why he has a gun, why he was in the casket as well as why he was alive since the respawn machine couldn't bring him far enough in time.
Soldier is probably the only main character that doesn't get injured or suffer that much.
At 46:28 another explanation for Maynards lack of eyes could be that Fritz is hallucinating. He takes the same medication as Jeremy does for schizophrenia and it could be that as part of respawning his system is purged of any medication he had taken previously, thus he hallucinates a terrifying vision shortly after.
1:35:07 It made me happy to hear that Rick May scream the first time I watched Emesis Blue.
In a small way, he was respawned to appear in this film.
Stretching a video into an essay summary longer than the film’s run time. This film had to have captivated 99% of its audience.
Easily my favorite analysis of Emesis Blue so far. I love how in-depth it explores the movie's intertextuality, I feel like it genuinely solved a lot of my questions about the whole thing
Releases video in the morning: “Good evening”
It's evening for me
Fr its 8 oclock here where i live
Lol
It’s night time mates
It's evening tho
Man, that thumbnail image of that final, faded photo is SO haunting to me, probably one of the most chilling images in the whole movie. I dunno why, it's so simple, but there's just some aspect of it that makes my blood run cold...
Also, that scene of Soldier's flashback to the trenches is INSANE to me for something made in SFM, that shit's worthy of an Oscar.
Also also, I realized that Soldier *is* actually given a name. When Agent Stemmons is talking to him, he calls him "Mr. Doe". At 1:35:45, he says "He had his secrets, Mr. Doe." Referring to Archibald keeping the slaughterhouse from being demolished. He's still never given a first name though, and the name "Jane Doe" itself, much like "John Doe" is a term used to refer to a person whose true identity is unknown or concealed, often by police in reference to an unidentified corpse, and I've always found it somewhat interesting that not only is that what they use for Soldier's name in canon, but that they specifically go with "Jane", the feminine version. Not sure what any of this implies, if anything, but I found it somewhat interesting.
Edit: Just saw the last frame, disregard that last tangent about Soldier's name
I love how Richter said the Undertaker couldn't be the Medic's alternate personality because he couldn't be stalking himself, minutes before _and_ after mentioning characters literally attacking themselves because time runs non-linearly in the film. 10/10 scriptwriting.
4:45 considering the only videos I could find then that talked about this film are just blatant retellings of the surface level of the film like it was a teaser for a video game I think your actual delving into the film and uncovering the subsurface level of the film is very warranted. Thank you very much for this video.
I think part of the reason soldier just stepped in front of the sniper is because military snipers are taught to aim at basically a triangle from the neck to nipples on personnel. It’s easier to hit vital organs then going for the head. He made an educated guess.
emesis blue is what happens when a project is made for passion and not for profit. its a true testament to the meaning of art.
great analysis video too
Perhaps the “True Enemy” is the Undertaker? While he’s been shown quite a bit, he’s never once stuck around, usually in the background or otherwise there for only a few moments before disappearing
Awesome! Thank you for making the video! Ever since I've seen Emesis Blue, I couldn't stop wondering about its meanings. Finally, somebody explained it fully.
Love the jokes you made for some of the scenes! Also the message from the creators themselves is a very nice touch!
i just want to add that the ending scene with medic losing his teeth in the bathroom matches scout's nightmare he told medic in the beginning
he talks about it in the vid
I think that Stalingrad might be a reference to Nemesis from Resident Evil 3. A big bulky monster relentlessly chasing, getting more and more damaged as it progresses. Also definitely visually inspired by Mr X.
He's more similar to Mr X, the hat, getting pissed when it gets shot off. Even the way he opens the door when Fritz first breaks into the Slaughterhouse.
Although I assume the wya he says "BLU team" to be a Nemesis reference
@@roningfroggy Oh yeah. Perhaps he’s a combination of both.

What cyclops could mean here is Helix Technologies themselves, he’s talking about the bigger company perhaps, “our true enemy isn’t red or blue it’s rather those who wear the shroud of darker colors, Archibald could be masking himself in these darker colors” but this is all speculation and could just my own crazy theory
It could also be a line referring to The Smoker,The Hunter,The Undertaker which explain the line of "dark colors" maybe its a representation of soldiers well being and how his innocence got crushes,in just one day
Stalingrad is one hell of a reference to Mr. X from RE2 and even more to Nemesis from RE3. "Builders League" is his "STARS" xd
The fact that scout actually died to a common sentry spot is hysterical
About the Undertaker being future Fritz, this has been my personal understanding for a while and it was a relief to see you come to the same conclusion in the end. It explains a lot, and makes sense with how prominent time loops are in the story's plot.
One scene that I think is really interesting with this theory in mind that I want to point out is when the Undertaker almost shoots Spy early on. Think about it, why didn't he? You can see him start pulling the trigger, the hammer cocking back, before he abruptly pulls the gun away and books it. Undertaker being future Fritz explains this quite well: given everything that Spy does later on, Fritz would _really, really_ want to shoot him, but he can't this early on without causing a paradox, like you mentioned.
It also explains the weird scene where we see eyeless Fritz over the corpse of Scout's mom, which I don't think is what that scene actually looked like but is more abstract, similar to the scene of the blood pouring out of the respawn machine just before. It simply shows that he did this after the later car crash that leaves him in that exact physical state, but by that point he would have once again regenerated, looped back in time somehow, and donned the plague doctor wear to hide his identity before committing the murder. Although, given that Scout clearly blames Fritz for the murder later when he's freed, it seems likely that the Undertaker did reveal his face to Scout, which would actually make sense as a necessary step to complete the loop now that I think about it. If Scout doesn't think Medic committed the murder, he wouldn't run away and get shot after being freed and the movie would go down quite differently. The quote at 1:50:34 is a little difficult to fit into this (although I give it less weight, since it's not part of the movie and is just an off-hand comment from the director in a casual setting), but I can still see it making sense. The confusion between thinking both Medics are the same, the disorientation between who's who, or perhaps who's when. He was right about Fritz doing it, but wrong about it being the Fritz that freed him who did it.
Now that I'm typing this out, I'm starting to wonder, what happens to the Undertaker after the funeral? That appears to be the completion of the loop, as his inception plays out shortly afterwards with his past self crashing the ambulance. By all appearances, he is no longer necessary as of this moment. Perhaps after the ending, with his duty to ensure events happen as they should completed resulting in the destruction of the slaughterhouse and all the people responsible for it, he can finally rest for good? Maybe after the ending, he gets to finally enjoy his happy ending with Scout in the afterlife that he worked so hard to secure, no longer forced to come back to life after death? Or could he still be out there, either due to having more unfinished business we don't know about, or due to being unable to die properly after the constant respawn exposure resulting in any death eventually just reversing itself?
Anyway, good video, appreciate the solid analysis on a film that's given me a lot to think about regardless of when it came out. Just makes the video more valuable to me, since it's a pleasant surprise to get quality coverage of a work like this after the point where everyone seems to have moved on. Good call on not rushing out another bland plot summary closer to release there. Most interesting thing you pointed out to me here was that the shadowy figure that shoots Soldier in front of the staircase looks like Archibald, never considered that it could be him.
Actually, time for a tangent: It almost seems like he's being used as a puppet in some way here, appearing in the cage to distract Soldier so that Demoman can get separated, disappearing immediately afterwards, and I saw a comment on another video covering the movie point out that the wound/scar on his head might be from Spy's gunshot later on. Of course, it makes a lot of sense metaphorically as Archibald literally denying Soldier access to heaven or any other afterlife he'd have otherwise earned with the whole respawning business, but it's obvious someone was actually there and shot him for real with the bullet in the canteen, and how that comes to be and why is difficult to work out since he seems to come from nowhere. Maybe it could be the Spy? Using the faces of others is kind of his thing, he could have waited there and uncloaked explaining his sudden appearance, but it being the Spy doesn't make any sense to me. Why would he say "see you at the funeral" and then try to get him killed, especially when he seemed to want to use Soldier as a pawn for his own power grab? But then, it also doesn't seem to make sense as something Archibald would do unless he was made to do so in some way, used like a puppet like he was in the cage earlier...and he did suddenly disappear there, which could be linked to his sudden appearance here. Maybe him shooting Soldier was directed by the Undertaker? Actually...Soldier later backs up Fritz as he escapes from the funeral, passing him the briefcase that is likely necessary for the Undertaker to revive and loop back in time. It's likely that things would have played out differently if Soldier had been allowed to climb the staircase, either being absent from the funeral entirely or acting differently resulting in the loop being broken. Not sure why the Undertaker would use Archibald to do this rather than doing it himself, but maybe it was to confuse soldier, stunning him so he'd fall after being shot? The screenplay does point out that Soldier recognized the person but it didn't make any sense, perhaps if he was less stunned he wouldn't have limply let himself fall like that. I don't know, this scene remains probably the most confusing in the entire movie to me, competing with the part with the church and the respawn machine.
(Quick side not on the church scene, perhaps the applause by the audience is just for Fritz playing his role well? Like an audience clapping after the dramatic finish of a play, applauding his performance as the "hero" of the story. It definitely gives me the vibe that they're showing approval for his performance in overcoming the Butcher in some way...perhaps they're applauding his transformation into the Undertaker, being branded with the M and using the Butcher's head immediately afterwards just like the Undertaker does with the head of Scout's mom.)
Alright, that's all the thoughts I have to share, hope I gave you some interesting food for thought. Hope it's all readable and makes sense, typing this after being up for far too long.
HOLY SHIT THE WHOLE FRITZ BEING THE UNDERTAKER ACTUALLY MAKES SO MUCH SENSE.
It explains a ton of confusing mysteries and honestly I don't think it could be anything else, im suprised not many people thought of this yet.
Lots of people think that, but the time travel angle helps resolve the apparent contradictions.
Why do they even call him the undertaker? He hasn't even buried anyone.
@@therealmanguymanhe buried himself to an eternal punishment
@@therealmanguyman 1) He put Jeremy in a coffin
2) If richter's right it's also a hint to his identity. 'Undertaker' is pretty much the opposite of 'medic'. Thematic
Could also be some kind of reason off-screen, or maybe just that he has killed many people.
Not too far into the video, and Richter might mention this, but I love how the movie uses colour to tell when something bad is about to happen. The colour red is associated with murder and death, the shift in the medics eyes show his violent and his normal side fighting for control.
surprisingly he never mentions it
Very interesting! I didn’t know about anything the creators elaborated on or that the screenplay existed, so that definitely shifts the whole perspective a ton.
One thing that kind of surprised me is the whole “the 4 trials are 4 different guys” thing. I believed it to be just one as they try time and time again to bring him back without error, and that once brought back as normal as could be he ended up shooting himself due to the horrors he’d experienced. But I’m assuming the screenplay clarifies them to be different, or the creators themselves clarified it.
Yeah, the screenplay describes 4 different subjects. Getting a lot of angry comments from people who don't know about that haha. Glad you enjoyed the vid!
Stalingrad reminds me of Mr X from the RE 2 remake, from how menacing he is and how it literally grabs your face crushing your head pretty cool
1:29:55 I kind of always figured the weird Demo vision was referring to the Mann brothers, they technically hadn’t “revealed” themselves at that point in the movie, only Blutarch’s voice having been heard, and technically when you think about it, they really are the true enemies of every class, forcing them to fight and die in a meaningless war built on spite and pettiness, only to bring them back and do it all over again
My theory is that the Undertaker is the medic for the Black Team which is how he was able to frame medic so well and as you point out he is wearing a plague mask
Well yeah but the thing is that the black team are the resurrected forms of the various characters, it makes sense for the undertaker to be the fritz who's been respawned hour and possibly days prior to the events. We know the red medic isn't he undertaker either because he's working on the heavy only moments prior to the events of the slaughter house.
You did an actually incredible job in making this video. Subscribed, and this is the first vid of yours I've ever seen.
This channel is highly underrated, the amount of immense research, background knowledge, and tip top narrative explaining the whole movie/plot is incredible.
This dude not only knows how to sum up a story well but to elaborate further with his own perspective and humor along the way. I take inspiration from the way he speaks for I have horrible grammar and way of speaking to my friends and family. Even recounting the things I did last week is like trying to remember what I did last month. Anyways to sum up I really appreciate the way this guy explains things and how he analyzes them even opening up things from the movie I couldn’t capture and for further in depth elaborations, I hope this guy gets the recognition he deserves and success for his work. Toodles!
Can't wait for Emesis Red
That's just stblackst
Something I thought of about Soldier hallucinating the war was that is was more of an allegory of their time as respawn-able mercenaries.
It's him, scout, and spy in the thick of it, with medic off to the side playing chess almost like he's not really there, but somewhere else, moving around the mercs like pieces on a board from an office or something of that sort.
Another thing I realized was how scout goes out in that scene, shot in the head.
And given he's still alive and twitching when Soldier catches him, it got me thinking.
What if the reason Scout was let go was because of being shot in the head and the respawn machine not being able to reverse the effects correctly, unintentionally lobotomizing the newly respawned scout, leaving him not all there?
Which definitely points to the respawn machine malfunctioning since it's clearly brought people back from gunshot wounds to the head before.
I'm in LOVE with your content. Not just the way you explain it, also the effort you put into editing and researching every single details and interessting facts is just wholesome.
One minute detail you missed was that the Jacques' camera has the Helix logo on it. Its also property of Helix, which means that the photographic evidence they were taking was probably owned by Helix as well.
Again, this is a minor, yet cool detail.
28:37 if im correct thats a leg of lamb which is a referece to a book called lamb to the slaughter (free to read online) it is a book about a wife who kills her husband with a leg of lamb, at the end of the book she convices the detectives to eat the leg of lamp forever getting rid of the murder weapon.
I remember reading that story in school lol
I think that the scene with the masked figures applauding correlates with the funeral scene. In both moments, Medic kills a burnt, masked man in front of a crowd. Medic having a vision of himself in the coffin adds to this in my opinion. As you said, Medic's appearance during the funeral is similar to Dr. Caligari, which may be an explanation for the file names.
After watching this.. what is the Undertaker? Is he an antagonist for killing Scout's mother/causing her death, manipulating characters, like Medic, and putting peoples lives in danger? Or is he an anti-hero for stopping Jules and his malicious plans?
a thing i noticed during the film is the spy charecter showing up in the soldiers trench flashback, he gets torched alive by a pyro, seemingly foreshadowing the eventual fate he gets burning himself alive after shooting the pyro
"Our true enemy has yet to reveal himself" - 'Cyclops' [1:29:44]
I'm gonna bet the "true enemy" is whoever is in charge of Emesis Pharmaceuticals or Helix Technology. Hell, those two companies might even be under the same parent company and it's whoever runs THAT company.
Also when Fritz died from the game of Russian Roulette the briefcase was also nearby and it didn't take too long to revive him the first time so maybe he actually came back then and just metal gear'd himself into Archibald's funeral casket.
And finally I absolutely agree with your theory on The Undertaker's identity.
... Grey Mann anyone? Taking from the TF2 comics I think that would be the clear choice, what role he will play IDK but it seems that it would be that character at least
the true enemy were the friends we made along the way... jk its the cia agent thats what the shot of him looking out the window was for maybe
Dude, that Twilight Zone reference at the start was SICK.
You know a video essentially about cheating death, time loops and immortality is great when you question your own mortality for several hours afterwards. Darn good job, Richter. Keep up the great work!

A scene of the film I love is that the spy asks the butcher what he wants then the butcher shows his face saying that he wants his face or worse spy's face of which he kinda claims.
Edit: When the smoker wheres the mask it could show he has become just as corrupt as the butcher
