Civvie11 covered Hunt Down the Freeman and there were two points where he had to use console commands just to finish it. The fact that console commands were necessary to finish it, is a pretty good indicator of just how bad it is. It also dethroned Postal 3 for the title of "Worst game on the Source engine".
Entropy zero is definitely a fantastic fangame, super enjoyable for people like me who really enjoy fangames where you get to flip the script and play as the villain
It feels like a true Opposing Force 2 but one that actually embraces being the villain. And as silly as the stealth segment started out it was actually pretty fun.
I feel like the ugly should be like the funny type games that are either so bad it’s good or bad on purpose(also in tgtbtu the ugly is not necessarily the villain, just and ugly character)
In the movie, Tuco is called “The Ugly” because he’s a slimy greedy opportunist, and isn’t necessarily good or bad since he is morally at odds with himself. You could use “The Ugly” to describe Hunt Down The Freeman, since it’s a selfish cashgrab piggybacking off of a successful franchise to fleece its supporters of money and it’s devs of time. Its obvious from the resources put into graphics and cutscenes that if the creator wanted it to be something worthwhile and good, then he had the ability to make it happen. However, that was never his intention. Or, you could use “The Ugly” to refer to fan games that had promise, but failed due to devs falling out or misguided priorities. There’s numerous projects that, unlike HDTF, started from a place of genuine love and inspiration, but fell apart due to inner turmoil.
Back 4 Blood feels more like a curiosity than a proper game honestly. EVERYTHING about it seems to be stuff cut from Left 4 Dead's early development. Stuff like upgrades, the weird levelling system, giant, stationary boss monsters. It feels like a view into an alternate universe. The upgrade and card systems are interesting as concepts, but scavenging for money is annoying and serves mainly to slow down the game (and you know the horde level where you have to fight an onslaught of special enemies that all have extremely similar designs you can't tell from each other is coming) and the card system doesn't really feel like it changes much.
it's one of those games i became less and less interested in the more i heard about it to the point where even though it's on game pass i have zero desire to play it. it's clear that turtle rock learned nothing from evolve.
@@xsoultillerx It's not that Turtle Rock learned nothing from Evolve, they HAD to do the microtransactions because 2K wouldn't let them put out the game as they wanted. And it's a different genre anyway. It's that they learned nothing from Left 4 Dead. The game is basically everything Left 4 Dead cut out. Having to slow down and scavenge in a fast paced multiplayer game, stationary bosses that don't really challenge the player, iron sights being in just because with no thought as to the fact Left 4 Dead didn't have them because they encouraged moving slowly in what was clearly meant to be a faster paced action game.
@@DarthMcDoomington Those things were cut from the original Left 4 Dead for a good reason. They were terrible ideas. And seeing them reimplemented in Back 4 Blood and seeing how well that game turned out backs it up further.
Personally think that the entire fun of modding is getting the good and bad of what the community can create, cause even the bad stuff has merit. It’s worth a thousand crack life’s for a Counter Strike or Black Mesa
I’d rather see people put effort and creativity into something and it not come out good than another generic game that took it safe and no one remembers in a year. But profit is kinda important for a game studio I get that.
It is Sturgeon's Law in the flesh. You have thousands of projects that are either bad, mediocre, or get abandoned and never see the light of day, and then you have the one every couple years that rockets to the top of ModDB as one of the best things ever created by a community.
This isn't very important, but usually when you use the "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" phrase, "The Ugly" doesn't denote the worst of the worst, it's supposed to represent stuff that's in the middle of the road, with ambiguous qualities that makes it confusing to parse, hence "ugly". The phrase comes from a movie with the same name, it's really great, you should watch it!
As someone who patiently waited 3 years and spent over $100 preordering B4B, I can definitely tell you how disappointing it was. Barely anyone from the original Turtle Rock team worked on B4B, and it simply has none of the charm or polish L4D has. Valve always puts so many little details into their games that you barely notice until they're taken away. Back 4 Blood is the best example of this.
@@megatokyo2113 Best you can do if you still want to pre-order is to see who worked on previous successful games and who works on the game you want to pre-order. If almost none of those devs are working on it, you shouldn't pre-order at all. Unfortunately, in this case, it really was Valve carrying it mostly which was harder to see, but now is easier to understand.

@@Danblak08 Now THIS mod is not just mediocre but straight up BAD. It's buggy, some chambers have parts of them that you can simply skip, it barely ever makes you use portals, some chamber elements (e.g. funnel) are not used at all, and the central mechanic is disappointing. Instead of "time machine" you are given an unholy amalgamation of singleplayer and co-op. The ONLY good thing about this mod is the way chambers look. If only reflections weren't broken.
@@ghurcbghurcb I aggre. Aperture tag is decent, not sure if worth the price though. Mel is good, but for me a wasted opportunity. The game is literally portal 2 done again, nothing new. Cool puzzles and enviroments though! Thinking with time machine is the bad. Reloaded is the best one out there, hands down.
I really don't think its fair to call out everyone who "Did video essays on how bad HDTF is" for being supposedly "greedy for a quick buck" and "making essay after essay". Besides the fact some of them were literally reviewing the game on launch, its still totally fair to make a video with your own opinion on something, considering not everyone has the same opinion, experience, or information on a game. Some of those videos werent even essay type videos, they often talked about something behind the scene beyond "Game bad." And claiming that people making vids on HDTF were bringing down the HL community by associating it with HDTF is really, Really shortsighted tbh. The general reception I see from non-HL fans is never tarnishing or making fun of the HL community in relation to HDTF. Just because you didn't like talking about HDTF doesnt mean people who did talk about it are contributing to tarnishing HL as a community, that just feels malicious to me.
Agreed, that rant took me out of this video. I'd argue it's important that video essays were made, especially by youtubers who were voices or devs in the game. It helped shed some light on the behind the scenes and gave us insight into how HDTF was managed, at least in some small ways, and can be used as an example for those involved in a fan game in the future, perhaps red flags. Who knows, another HDTF could come around the corner whether it be a year or several years from now.
You think that's bad, one player called him out on this same thing and Richter acted like a jerk to him, he did the same thing to a dev working on the OWF build of HDtF that is being made to improve the game, and I have the pictures to prove it.
Speaking of bringing down the community, Richter is literally bringing down the TF2 community with his fear mongering "TF2 is dead." TF2 is far from being dead. The game's still receiving small updates and the community is very much alive.
I cannot wait until Operation: Black Mesa comes out. A game studio called Tripmine Studios is making a remake of Blue Shift and Opposing Force and it looks exciting! It doesn't have a release date at the moment but it definitely looks like a try.
That mod is going to suck. I know things about it and it’s going to be awful. Don’t get your hopes up. If you want the true “Opposing Force 2.0” just play Entropy Zero 2.
If there’s ever a sequel to this video, I’d recommend checking out the Valve fangames by Eric Ruth. There’s Team Fortress Arcade, a beat-em-up based on TF2, and Pixel Force: Left 4 Dead, an NES-styled demake of the first Left 4 Dead. They’re neat little distractions a la Codename: Freeman.
It was only really the guy in charge, the rest of the team are really talented and capable individuals. I know some of the guys who did level design for the project, and they received completely conflicting instructions, were told to modify areas in ways that were unintuitive and unfitting, and weren’t even allowed to talk to other level designers to make sure everything flows well as a whole. Insane waste of time for all of those involved.
I was definitely kind of wanting to see genry's great escape from city 13, and hearing a mention of it at the end surprised me. Small note, but the game has a ton of unused content
I have a story about Prospekt. I was actually on the Discord, seeing all the previews for the Upgraded versions, and it actually seemed decent. But, I had a few nitpicks, and so my peers took it upon themselves to harass me, blowing what I said way out of proportion. When they opted to use Autism as an insult, I peace’d the fuck out. Learning that the updates wound up in some Development Hell actually gives me a sick satisfaction, finding out they got fucked over years later. Heh heh heh. I commend the people making the M3SA build of HDTF. A lot of good people got screwed making it, and I’m glad they could find some fun taking the piss out of Berkan.
Dissapointed you didn't include Portal Stories: Mel. It's easily the best Portal mod, with insane amount of detail/polish and extremely interesting test chambers.
@@arthurpietrogarcia1057 right but if I just wanted more test chambers, I'd go look at the workshop. The story is important too and Portal: Reloaded did decide to go with a story.
Richter I recommend making more content like this I really enjoy having a voice talk about my favorite games and how bad the mods for said game impacted the view of the community. I also just really enjoy this creative content like making a list of the best and the worst of the half-life moding community is a really good idea and I'd love to see more!
i loved 2D portal and Gang Garrison back in the day. I wish Vance was able to be released. i agree that you don't have to play back 4 blood to know it's bad
The demise of Steam Greenlight probably has more to do with Strategy First than it does with Hunt Down the Freeman. Basically, Strategy First was the very first publisher to sign a deal to put their games on Steam and that deal was incredibly short-sighted. It gave Strategy First the ability to put whatever they wanted on Steam without any oversight. When other publishers tried to give a publishing deal to a game on Greenlight, Valve stepped in and said they could do that. The game would still have to be approved via Greenlight to maintain the integrity of the system, and ensure publishers couldn't prey on small developers by offering them a terrible deal to circumvent the voting process. Problem is that Strategy First had a contract that let them do just that. Their most active years on Steam were the greenlight years, where they grabbed shovelware scam games off Greenlight and posted them directly to Steam with Valve not being able to lift a finger to stop them. Valve had to come to terms with the fact that as long as Strategy First exists, Greenlight couldn't actually work. There would always be a set of rules for everyone else, and a free pass to do whatever for Strategy First, and that would ultimately harm their relationship with the publishers and small developers that really drive Steam.
I liked the idea of Steam Greenlight. It was sort of crowdfunded publishing. Instead of throwing every piece of shit at the store, there was some level of community effort. Releasing games the people actually wanted to see, with some added PR for the game.
Dude, I hate HTDF as much as the next guy, but I feel like being mad at anyone who covered or made a video on it as well as people who like it ironically feels...well, petty. Your heart is in the right place, the mod's a dumpster fire with some of the scummiest development I've seen on a mod, but I don't think the voice actors or video essay creators are responsible for decisions made during development nor how HTDF released. People like myself may laugh at how abysmal the thing is, but in no way are we trying to send the message of "this is how mods should be made."
I remember Pyrocynical saying that all he was just given was his lines on a page with no direction or context. With that info, no wonder the voice acting sucked, that's not how it works, that's not how any acting works. 80% of the time you get a bad performance, it's either the directors' fault or the script's fault
@@delusion5867Yeah, I see no issue with the voice actors, they do their job, and usually aren't involved on the production and design beyond that. Especially when it's a community project and people from the community have the chance to participate. All done in good faith. Look at Oblivion, the voice lines were recorded alphabetically. No wonder NPC dialogue sounds so weird and disconnected.
3:32 you should have mentioned that you can’t get the game anymore since valve removed it because the website for devs that is on the main menu leads you to a virus and malware site so the only way to get the game is to put a link in your browser
@@g_freakmanThe one game where I do that is Codename Gordon. A little sidescroller released before Half Life 2, everyone with a steam account owns it, but it doesn't show up in the store or library unless you manually download it. It's part of paket 0, together with things like TF2, Synergy, SteamVR, Dota 2, the different Source SDK releases, lots of source engine game dedicated servers, the HL2 demo, Proton and other stuff.
Having played Entropy Zero, it is a fun romp, and the Protag Civil Protection Unit has some adequately spicy one-liners reminiscent of 90's action movies and games
Richter took a lil richter break and now richter is making richter videos where richter talks about things richter likes! Good video richter! Edit. I Would love to see a part two (with mods instead of games?). Love the new content richter
Nice video as always. Would like to see another one of these, but for cancelled fan games that had enough press and info about them (Opposing Force 2 and that one Epistle 3 mod come to mind). I'm also surprised you didn't have HL2 The Closure on this list. THAT NEEDS a video dedicated to it.
im glad that The Stanley Parable at least made a cameo in the video. that game is so dang good. genuinely my favorite game ever even if its a bit short
there is a card/skill deck building mechanic in B4B that went really unutilized in the actual campaign missions of the game until just recently when the devs realized people didn't want to play through 40 minutes of different levels to only get half of their card decks so they finally made it to where you actually get them all from the start. Its an actually really fun mechanic with that change, I'm glad they did it as veteran difficulty is actually kinda enjoyable now.
16:22 I like the... tapersona? Is that what it would be called? Either way, it's an interesting idea that should probably get more attention (even though I am utterly hopeless at art). Love the content Richter.
@@SpringDavid it’s been a while since I’ve seen the pyro vid but from my perspective he didn’t really do anything “slimy” all he did was make a video criticizing it with the type of humor he had at the time which he had full right to do anyway, all he did was record like 1-2 lines for them anyway, also the fact I feel like people who have been on a project have the right to criticize it fully no matter what they were on that project lmao.
@@jammygeez And? It was an indie studio that was made of valve fans and were working on Black Mesa as a mod. If they weren't Valve fans, they wouldn't bother with remaking their first game ever.
12:32 Back 4 Blood has a lot of conflicting mechanics that make it unfun to play. Enemies are poorly thought out and designed in conjunction with the maps, they can be bullet sponges, which bogs down gameplay. The characters are forgettable. The devs also bashed any potential for speed and speedrunning, which was unncessecary and regarded as a bad move. Turtle Rock does not know what they're doing and it shows.
Not to mention that they like to nerf everything into the ground as to “control” how players tackle their game. And not only that they nerf things just because they can and change what each character does and what role they have. Simply put they don’t follow the fun, if everything is overpowered then nothing is overpowered, but if you nerf everything then everything is weak. And as someone who paid $80 and spent 240 hours playing their game I expect way more. And what makes it worse is that I’ve put 400 hours in L4D2 and every time I boot it all I can think is how much of a disappointment B4B is. That’s all.
Its no secret that valve did most of the work on L4D and L4D2. And turtle rock is mainly using their niche involvement to add credibility to their brand and sell their "spiritual successor"
I remember playing Gang Garrison 2! It was honestly so fun and was before TF2 went free to play. Massive props to the people who made it, was pretty damn faithful ngl
6:15 I remember playing this as a kid. Loved it so much and wanted to play it 24/7 and for the past few years I've been trying to find its name again to play it, due to the fact that being a kid I'd just call it 2d tf2. Thanks so much, this reignited a lot of good memories
I used to play Left 4 Dead 2 back then but the reason why i quit is being buggy sometimes, i look up in Back 4 Blood on Steam and since 2021 i know it got a really bad rating. Today, i focus on Half-Life 2 and Garry's mod but i don't think i would say L4D2 is bad or worst, it's just Valve really want everything balanced or decided to keep it as a normal. But there's so many games that inspired nor created a fanmade game that i really don't know much. Snowdrop Escape is one of my favorite, thanks for making a very great explanation here Richter
You should for sure do a sequel. Others have mentioned it already, but I was surprised you brought up portal and didn't bring up Portal Stories Mel. I'd also like to see Portal 2: Memories get a mention.
weird bit anti-intellectual digression at the end about how making essays on 'bad art' isn't valid or whatever while also having hdtf in the thumbnail - like if talking about this thing is so bad for the image of the community you can make the choice not to also join in on that process
Something I like about black mesa is how you can customize certain things using mods. For example, Crowbar Collective cut down on a rail to be much shorter, but there’s a mod that re extends the chapter to the same or longer length as the original
I love some of these so called "demakes" dearly because when I was young every computer I used had computing power lower than the machines of Apollo 11 so I couldn't run and simply didn't have many games thus I had to satisfy myself with said demakes I found online such as Gang Garrison 2 and Portal Flash version. I had lots of fun with these and they have a special place in my memory. Also Gang Garrison's easter egg introduced me to Cave Story and that's another thing that I am very thankful for.
I'd love to see more of the 'good' fan-games, particularly the lesser known ones. I've played and seen so many good ones, I wanna see some which I didn't know about.
i loved the game but after i started fighting against b-hoppin quake vets i stood no chance against since i am a poow wittle gen z gamew that needs to git guwd :( i uninstalled the mod and forgot about it

TF2C is honestly quite incredible, seeing those original high quality viewmodels again was enough to win me over, the addition of cut weapons like the nail gun and MIRV, along with the VIP gamemode and more just make it that much better. While the lack of cosmetics means your mercs have less visual flair, it helps make disguising more viable as a spy. Not having the unlockable weapons from TF2 is a bit sad (it felt weird not being able to double donk in TF2C), and speaking of weapons there's some neat little details on them. For instance, if I remember correctly the shotgun bolt actually cycles with the pump, and the pistol's slide actually moves. Shotgun shells are actually ejected onto the ground, my favorite is that many guns with detachable magazines like the pistol will actually drop empty magazines on the ground when you reload. It's a really small feature, and it doesn't have any effect on the gameplay, but it's always satisfying, and I love it whenever a game has this sort of attention to detail.
To me Black Mesa is probably the best gaming remake of all time. It's genuinely amazing game and it's absolutely fantastic to see Valve itself acknowledge it and make it part of Half Life itself.
The replacement of Half Life source (after that got shafted by not being updated) But I sitll recommend playing the original HL1 release as well. There are differences, and experiencing the original is part of Half Life.
for context valve asked the TF2C Team to remove downloads because the game was based off the leaked source files (Which is in violation of the software services agreement). So it is less they don't care now and more they have a Hard Line Against leaked source being used.
Well they didn't actually care, when the classic team asked them if they're okay to put it in steam like valve asked, but they didn't respond so the devs put the game back on out of spite and valve still hasn't said anything
@@literallyvergil1686 To Be honest my guess is since they admitted using the leaked source(They said they were asking about it in relation to TF2C vs open fortress) valve said to remove it (as it is technically against the agreement) but they don't actually monitor what does what.
@@aliangel5007 valve also suggested they can put it on steam but never responded, they also never responded when they asked again if they can put it back, valves communication is incompetent
I remember an old fangame that was pretty much a top-down 8-bit conversion of L4D. I remember it being fun and having local co-op, but that's all I can really say about it.
It would have been cool if you got a bit more into depth about the m3sa build and how a team of developers is actually doing this redemption arc on the game :)
Your video was good but I find one flaw. I feel like in the ugly section, you had more emphasis to just bash on people who did the videos on Hunt Down The Freeman instead of the game itself, and the voice game actors. Other than that, pretty good.
i got hunt down just to see how shitty is was, yeah. everytime i got to a new chapter i lost all of my weapons and had to get new ones that are on the map
6:24 There's a simple explanation for those cameos: Cave Story was still a big deal back when Gang Garrison 2 came out, and its relevance continues to this day. It's the godfather of indie games.
Two Words - Minerva: Metastasis. That plus Smod is the best HL2 universe gameplay experience I've ever had. And the way that, to my knowledge, the *single developer* Adam Foster created an entire original plot and built a gloriously detailed citadel-scale combine structure for players to fight their way through, and the way that the presented opposition forces you to run and survive rather than clear out every single enemy and "win" the combat encounters is just wonderful, turns the game on its head. I only wish it had some voice acting for its dialogue messages, which is the only way the story is told to the player with its unraveling mystery about why you're there and what your mission is. The right voice actor in that role could be a huge plus to the experience, rather than having to stop and read each message. Other than that, it's just about perfect.
I always got the impression that the story being advanced via text messages with no voice acting was an homage to the Marathon trilogy. That's one of the things I loved about Minerva.
@@CityofButterfly I can see that. My only issue with it is that it kinda hurts the pacing, and the pacing is a big part of the theme of the story. But I can easily forgive it that.

Once again Richter made a banger video with no dislikes because he's just that good But TROs video is actually very well made, def wasn't made just for a quick buck. His content is quality over quantity.
Most of the longer videos on it are great. Pyro and IHE's videos were fun because they were involved with it, Tehsnakerer's video on it is so damn good it might as well be the definitive essay on why it sucks, and Civvie's was funny as hell.
I'm sorry, but i disagree vehemently; TRO's content fucking sucks and and his only claim to fame is that he makes stupidly long videos about waaay past dead topics without nothing new to the video; definitely a case of quantity > quality; and the difference between him, Civvie 11, Tehsnakerer, JarekTheGamingDragon is staggering

pretty shitty of you to rag on content creators making hour long thorough video essays about hunt down the freeman "for a quick buck" at 15:05 when you're doing the exact same thing, only more brief and less informed since you haven't even played the game.
Just because I haven't played through HDTF myself doesn't mean I'm "less informed." It just means I value my time more than you do. Other content creators may be more familiar with the game's shitty plotline or its mechanics, but I've been an active member of the Valve community for more than a decade and I witnessed firsthand how Hunt Down The Freeman humiliated the Half-Life community and permanently ruined Valve's relationship with modders. In short, I know the subtext of HDTF much better than many content creators (and evidently you) do, which makes me much more qualified to talk about HDTF than a huge list of other TH-camrs who, yes, saw a dumpster fire in a community they weren't a part of at all and decided to milk the outrage for money. Besides, just a week ago I co-starred on PurpleColonel's stream and watched him beat the entire M3SA build in one sitting. There is nothing I would gain from buying it myself. This game is shit. @@RichterOvertime you misunderstood what i meant. i'm not debating that you wouldn't be wasting your time by indulging in it, nor am i condemning you for talking about it. what i _am_ saying however is that grouping in some very well-written, well-researched, and informative documentative pieces in with actual cash-grabs that simply re-hash what has been stated from what came before is quite shitty and uninformed. but even then, who are you to gatekeep a video game from being discussed and documented? who are you to condemn content creators from discussing their experience with a project and leaving their audience better informed on what went on behind the scenes? and not only to condemn them, but follow up that condemnation with a retelling of your own? a bit less toxicity and negative assumptions would do you wonders. EDIT: furthermore, your argument of "i feel obligated to talk about it or else people in the comments would be going crazy about it" as seen in the video could also be applied to *every single e-celebrity who was featured in the game*, and every single video essay from a creator who was known to review video games, especially bad games. both of these types of people you actively condemn in the video for doing something you can get away with because "you're obligated to". you're not the only one with an audience who expect you to talk about popular things, and the valve community isn't the only community that can talk about valve things. you're turning away potential new members of the valve community, something your videos in the past have introduced me to the lesser-known sides of and made them very approachable, and seeing you act so gatekeep-y about this now is very disheartening.
1. meh True but i really wasnt interested in watching 15 million retrospectives to see what are the "Good ones" plus the fact u admit so many of them are cash grab rehashes kinda proves my point that this game has been talked to death and is better left behind. i didnt think it was too big of a deal since i also accidentally flashed a totally unrelated jacksfilms video which i think is a giveaway that i wasn't talking about every single video shown but maybe a disclaimer that not all the vids r bad was in order tho i concede 2.im a guy who cares about half life here to condemn content creators who milk the half life community for money without caring about it because i think its shitty behavior. ok yea they can discuss their experiences or whatever, its not like i said these vids should be pulled off youtube. but that doesnt mean i have to like it or be ok with what i see 3. not true though because hdtf only became as big as it did BECAUSE of the e-celeb fan flaming. as for gatekeeping im guilty as charged, tho i'd argue gatekeeping the valve community is a morally righteous act because it's so fucking awful. people have tried to kill eachother over leaked maps before!!! ultimately i read your comment thinking you were some guy stopping by and trying to talk shit but this new comment makes it seem like you care a little more so I'll give you an apology for not meeting your expectations and being sloppy in my coverage. also an apology for the cheap shots in my original reply. game still sucks tho (the guys who covered it and made it too!)
Portal Reloaded is truly impressive. The added new green portal is genius. Yes the puzzles can be more mentally challenging than anything in Portal 1 or 2. But I don't think they are frustratingly difficult to make one want to quit. The game is free, so it is a no-brainer for any Portal fan to play.
I wish you would've found another game for "The Ugly", Its less of a category and more of a special place for hdtf specifically Considering you seem like you really don't want to be talk about whats already been said and "damned if I dont", Another game that would fit the bill would be great
Having played it (on gamepass thankfully) I think it's a bit harsh to call Back 4 Blood straight up bad. The extreme amount of downgrades is absolutely depressing considering L4D 1&2 were so ahead of their time, you might as well assume that B4B came out before them if it weren't for the graphics. Additionally, they've straight up lied to and betrayed the speedrunning community, changing things only speedrunners would really use (like stam-hopping) behind their backs that they've previously assured they wouldn't change, nerfing "overpowered" risk-vs-reward builds that were fun to use (that were also pretty much only used by speedrunners), making certain features worse for no/bad reasons and then not even explaining some of them in the patch notes, etc. (check out "Developers Killed Back 4 Blood Speedrunning" by 'Maxylobes' for all of that). It's really ironic that Turtlerock Studio was also the developer of Evolve, a massive dumpster fire that was hyped up by people to the point like it seemed to be a cure for cancer.
Sorry bud, but Back 4 Blood is complete garbage water, what game needs a card system? and Turtlerock being slow to update the game and making it overpriced makes it more obvious that it's bad

Honestly, calling B4B a "L4D fangame" seems right on the money. It's certainly about the most positive thing I could say about it.

I love that crack life is so well known in the half life community that it gets brought up in videos like this

Some of those videos werent even essay type videos, they often talked about something behind the scene beyond "Game bad."
And claiming that people making vids on HDTF were bringing down the HL community by associating it with HDTF is really, Really shortsighted tbh. The general reception I see from non-HL fans is never tarnishing or making fun of the HL community in relation to HDTF. Just because you didn't like talking about HDTF doesnt mean people who did talk about it are contributing to tarnishing HL as a community, that just feels malicious to me.
Underrated comment.

Releasing games the people actually wanted to see, with some added PR for the game.
well then why doesn’t valve just buy strategy first

People like myself may laugh at how abysmal the thing is, but in no way are we trying to send the message of "this is how mods should be made."
I remember Pyrocynical saying that all he was just given was his lines on a page with no direction or context. Back 4 Blood has a lot of conflicting mechanics that make it unfun to play.

It's a really small feature, and it doesn't have any effect on the gameplay, but it's always satisfying, and I love it whenever a game has this sort of attention to detail.

for context valve asked the TF2C Team to remove downloads because the game was based off the leaked source files (Which is in violation of the software services agreement).
Hunt down the freeman was truly one of the greatest games
Ayoooo!!!! I made that Open Fortress fanart !! So glad you used it for your thumbnail even more so considering you're part of OF's dev team
Back 4 Blood is *absolutely* close enough to be called a fangame. It also is left severely lacking.
it been time . banger videos as usual Mr.over time .
It would have been cool if you got a bit more into depth about the m3sa build and how a team of developers is actually doing this redemption arc on the game :)
Holy crap I have not heard Codename Gordon in such a long time
Your video was good but I find one flaw.
I feel like in the ugly section, you had more emphasis to just bash on people who did the videos on Hunt Down The Freeman instead of the game itself, and the voice game actors.
Other than that, pretty good.
8:02 those flame particle effects tho 👀
i got hunt down just to see how shitty is was, yeah. everytime i got to a new chapter i lost all of my weapons and had to get new ones that are on the map
The Full Life Consequences parody of Hunt Down the Freeman had a clearer story
Hunt Down the Freeman is the Morbius of the games industry.
Good evening. Didn't realize you provided the voice for Kevin. Well done
What do you think about Portal Stories Mel and Aperture Tag?
6:24 There's a simple explanation for those cameos: Cave Story was still a big deal back when Gang Garrison 2 came out, and its relevance continues to this day. It's the godfather of indie games.
"It puts the steam in steaming pile of shit"
Gotta applaud you on that one that is a good line!
As disappointing as the end product for Prospekt may be, you gotta admit the custom suit voice they made for it is sick as fuck.
1:46
That is 100% the Hunting Shotgun reload animation from Fallout New Vegas.
Y'know, I recall one mod that was played that had a difficulty so bad it drove a TH-camr up a wall because of it.
Aka, whatever the fuck JollyWangCore put himself through with that Roadtrip mod.
"Editor's note: I didn't actually play on normal. I was accidentally on hard the *entire time*"
Man seeing the cut-content for Prospekt makes me remember the other OPFOR 2 mod that sadly got canned.
Even though I agree with what you have said, not playing the games yet complaining about them is how misinformation can potentially be spread. You say it like it's fine to bash a game without owning it. Please next time actually get the games and don't just repeat what other TH-camrs have demonstrated
at least I clarified it man lol a lot of youtubers will just lie and pretend. plus I used language that was honest like "most people I know have said X" and "from what I've seen"
As someone who had a blast in Open Fortress and curious about other mods I was waiting for this kind of video!
enjoyed the video was very intresting to know all the bad and good fangames now i can know wich i can play and wich ones i cant play and also i FINALLY joined your patreon! idk if you reseved the email or idk
It would be interesting to see a video like this about source fan games in general. Games like Underhell I feel really deserve the spotlight and analysis
Where is cs2d? Its a cute counter strike game.
I, along with my friend group has been steadily obsessed with Hunt Down the Freeman for over a year now. We've played all the cutscenes on discord music bots over a hundred times now that we could easily quote any line in the game
Once again Richter made a banger video with no dislikes because he's just that good
But TROs video is actually very well made, def wasn't made just for a quick buck.
@@HDTFCentral man you using big words that I had to look up, I just like his channel I don't often watch his content bc I find his voice to be a little mono I just tune in every now and again and as someone who loves to create stuff and never post it I understand how hard and easy video editing is. Plus youtube at this point isn't about passion, it's about money many creators will admit that youtube is their job and they need to make money so if they have to shill they will
Cool things I somehow learned from this channel: Gmod did Rust and Pyrocinical is involved with that fangame
pretty shitty of you to rag on content creators making hour long thorough video essays about hunt down the freeman "for a quick buck" at 15:05 when you're doing the exact same thing, only more brief and less informed since you haven't even played the game.
Stop throwing your ass on the line trying to defend it and the people who were involved with it. It's stupid.
1. meh True but i really wasnt interested in watching 15 million retrospectives to see what are the "Good ones" plus the fact u admit so many of them are cash grab rehashes kinda proves my point that this game has been talked to death and is better left behind. i didnt think it was too big of a deal since i also accidentally flashed a totally unrelated jacksfilms video which i think is a giveaway that i wasn't talking about every single video shown but maybe a disclaimer that not all the vids r bad was in order tho i concede
2.im a guy who cares about half life here to condemn content creators who milk the half life community for money without caring about it because i think its shitty behavior. ok yea they can discuss their experiences or whatever, its not like i said these vids should be pulled off youtube. but that doesnt mean i have to like it or be ok with what i see
3. not true though because hdtf only became as big as it did BECAUSE of the e-celeb fan flaming. as for gatekeeping im guilty as charged, tho i'd argue gatekeeping the valve community is a morally righteous act because it's so fucking awful. people have tried to kill eachother over leaked maps before!!!
ultimately i read your comment thinking you were some guy stopping by and trying to talk shit but this new comment makes it seem like you care a little more so I'll give you an apology for not meeting your expectations and being sloppy in my coverage. also an apology for the cheap shots in my original reply. game still sucks tho (the guys who covered it and made it too!)
I wish you would've found another game for "The Ugly", Its less of a category and more of a special place for hdtf specifically
Considering you seem like you really don't want to be talk about whats already been said and "damned if I dont", Another game that would fit the bill would be great
I was the one guy waiting for Genry's Escape, Thank you for mentioning it.
Having played it (on gamepass thankfully) I think it's a bit harsh to call Back 4 Blood straight up bad. It was pretty fun when I played and the weapon upgrade system and card system were both really great. It's more just, overpriced and Turtlerock has been slow on updating it
I think people just bandwagon crowbcat's video more than anything
Oh yeah, Crowbcat's one of the worst. Just makes a living off of cherrypicking pointless crap and circlejerking. Just look at his terrible TF2 video.
@@TarlukLegion Only 7 people from the original L4D 1&2 team worked on B4B. "cherrypicking pointless crap" isn't even applicable for B4B since everything he showed is literally part of the gameplay and therefore the enjoyment of it that can't be glossed over when compared to L4D 1&2.
@@HDTFCentral very insightful and constructive argument, 10/10 reply
