I remember accidentalyl stumbling upon this when i was trying to play Half life expansions in SVEN Co-op. I had used the server before, but this time instead of sending me to a place where i could select an expansion, it just started me in the beginning of the crypt with no information or instruction. Legit? It was actually creepy as hell! I was on edge the whole time! So impressive. That zombie which pops out of the cask and attacks the Jesus painting is what told me that this would be some spooky stuff.
I loved They Hunger so much. Got it in the discs that came with the magazines. I was a little too young to not just freak out though. I remember I spent a lot of time looking through the models with Model Viewer, and listening to the sound effects. There's a lot of cool detail in the characters! One zombie has a dismembered arm punched through its chest holding a gun pointed up to under their head, and their head is blown apart. Implying someone punched a gun through them, shot them in the head, and still didn't mnage to kill them. And then the zombie is just walking around with that arm and gun still in it.
lol I always interpreted that model as: the zombie ate someone whole and then in an unsuccessful attempt to escape, the person tried shooting the zombie in the head thru its chest. I always assumed it was supposed to be a comedic model, though I suppose even with your interpretation, it still is.
In my opinion the half-life 1 graphics add a ton to the the atmosphere it has that creapy ps1/n64 vibe. I only played the game for the first time a few months ago but leaving the tunnels to see the signs of the early morning and zombies across the river will always stay with me.
Yeah, that is something early 3D graphics can do really well. It's detailed enough that you know what things are supposed to be, but also low detail enough that your mind has to fill in the gaps. And when your mind is set to things being spooky and scary, it can conjure up things far worse.

They Hunger is one of those cooler mods out of them all, building a genuinely solid foundation for itself & standing out pretty well from Half-Life. If the original studio that made it compiled & connected all three campaigns together & released it separately as it's own game on Steam or some other site (with permission from Valve of course), it could've been one of the very few Gold Source titles ever made & released, & probably one of the best. The entire scenario it takes place in is unique to a zombie game, usually they take place in the present, during one of the two World Wars (for some reason) or in the future at some point. It's very creative for what it is & it's very creative for the limited tools they had at their disposal. Overall it could be claimed as the pioneer of videogame mods, there was a very slim amount beforehand, nothing really impressive, & after They Hunger the modding community became much larger & much more involved creating great experiences like Team Fortress & Counter Strike. Technically DOOM & Quake had strong modding scenes before Half-Life, but I don't count them because those mods weren't as expansive nor are they as cared for today. Now, just to fill my daily quota: Having They Hunger on Dreamcast & PS2 is so cool, I like PC gaming but I will always love Console gaming more & my favourite console is the Dreamcast, so knowing I can play They Hunger on my favourite console is so awesome & very impressive from the modding community. Another thing I wanted to mention is that at 20:55 you turn to look at the player next to you & his name is Soldier of Fortune, which is actually a classic FPS game from 1999 made by Activision, the same folks who now publish Call of Duty, & Soldier of Fortune is also on Dreamcast & I believe PS2, so I've fulfilled two Dreamcast references from one video, nice.
Oddly enough I knew about They Hunger due to Spike and Barley playing it. They never really finished it but it was the entry point for me. I feel most horror media always fall into the need to overly explain the "why" on monsters existence, but I get that at one point they kind of have to (either interest by the viewers or by the characters themselves). With that said I'm glad They hunger holds from doing it too early and lets you wander around amidst the chaos. And honestly it's kind of hard to chose between never explaining and upsetting the viewers or explain it and fall into a not-so-spooky cliché. Either way one thing is certain, the last helicopter battle is straight up BS. No ammo reload or health packs, could've at least give us a silly turret segment and be done with it. Hopefully someone decides to pick up the leaked files and do something with it. Can't be legally worse than the TF2 projects honestly. And yeah, the lead dev DOES look like the Unabomber.
in half life 2, i quickly fell in love with the ravenholm levels as they were as rustic as the name itself. i was always upset at how short that chapter was, and this mod for me is like if ravenholm got an extension pack
They Hunger manages to legitimately unnerve and creep me out sometimes even today. I guess playing the game alone in my basement with headphones on did it.
I am not fully disclosing for privacy sake, but Neil is alive he is not very active in social media but I've seen him post a few stuff here and there around 2021 from at least what I gather he seems fine and I can confirm it is him because one of the displayed posts is a meme that is corny as this mod.
Oh man, more nostalgia here then I expected! I recognize those DM maps and I forgot that I used to play the deathmatch a lot with my LAN group. It was my dad, his friend, and my friends, and even though it wasn't that great it was just more HL which we were desperate for. I was 8 years old when this came out and it was too scary for me! I think I managed to beat the first campaign though. I always loved the music at the start.
I remember playing this back in 2004 and thought it didn't exist and I dreamed it up until I saw VargSkelethor Joel play it. Good video. Wouldn't have thought about it ever again had youtube not recommended this video
Early Half life modding was my whole inspiration in becoming a game dev. I didn't have much access to technology or internet but I did get to play things like Halflife and Unreal Tournament and that early age of ingenuity was such a beautiful moment. They hunger was one of those few things I did get to enjoy.
One of the best mods released for Half-Life, I still remember downloading it when it released, it was pretty scary for it's time. I looked forward to They Hunger 2 for Half-Life 2 for so long before they shut it down. I still hope we will see it someday.
I cant think of may things that have genuinely unsettled me more than the scene of the nurse opening the curtain in the newborn room while a baby cries and turns around to reveal she was a zombie, the shock that ran through me was an experience i havent felt since
i recently played they hunger and it was k00l, but heart of evil will always be my favourite. there's a lot of nostalgia involved but i just find the setting, aesthetic and '00s teenage modding humour that much better.
I have so much nostalgia for this game. Sitting in my attic bedroom in the late 90’s with a big grey CRT monitor and some default pc speakers. Loved it. Tried it recently on Sven (another mod I have massive nostalgia for) and the difficulty was way higher! Especially playing it solo on coop with little to no health pickups
God, this is without a doubt one of my favorite HL1 mods. Such iconic voicelines from each undead, and not to mention the setpieces. Also "Death to Humans!"
Throughout the whole video, when the picture of Neile came up I could only think of the unibomber. Then when you made the comparison at the end it cracked me up, thank god I was not the only person who thought that.
I watched the first five seconds of this video and knew I needed to play this mod. absolutely love campy 90's horror. This mod reminded me of my favorite game, Blood(1997), i'm almost certain there was some inspiration there. I loved the atmosphere of the campane and thought it was really fun to play. the third chapter was unfortunate, but I think it was a good addition to the story and I also love the ending song its really a great way to wrap everything up.
According to Alfred and the various tape recorders in the asylum, Doctor Franklin wasn't insane and doing cruel experiments but was studying the zombies before becoming infected/zombified. The last tape recorder you find in the asylum before you climb up an elevator into a garage has a recording of him made after he got infected and went insane. The final boss fight isn't that bad if you are good at saving ammo (you can just melee most zombies if you're careful) and/or modify the skill.cfg file (I do that to make some things less unbalanced, like the zombie bull health for example) to make the difficulty less absurd. Going for headshots and meleeing zombies in the face saves you an absurd amount of ammo. I found it a lot easier to beat the helicopter boss fight by saving any grenade launcher ammo I found, quicksaving, and then using the MP5/G3's grenade launcher when the helicopter got close enough. In the Sven Co-op version of They Hunger, the "ranch gun" and "battle rifle" are an M14 battle rifle and M16/AR-15 assault rifle respectively. Also, the Tec-9 or AP-9 that appeared in the original mod was replaced by an M3 submachine gun (sadly it has only 20 rounds instead of 30 rounds and is often overlooked for the 50-round Tommy gun by most players).
They Hunger is such a fun, cheesy little classic! Such a damn shame it never got an official Source Engine game! Also, the PC Gamer advertising gives me nostalgia.
It's crazy how the headless zombie still knows exactly where you are . I think the marines should've been on the player's side unlike the original hl don't you think ?
My headcanon is that the soldiers weren't outright hostile for any malicious or nefarious purposes, just panicked and couldn't discern friend or foe properly. A fair number of zombies wield weapons by that point and can speak fairly clearly, as well as some having deceptively little damage or decay to their bodies. They likely barely managed to keep from shooting eachother by that point.
To be fair the military deciding everyone within the infected area is to be shot on sight is a very common trope. Though probably a more modern one as evidenced by me having to use "infected"
@@BenersantheBread The initial encounter with the first soldiers actually has them gesturing as though they're friendly, and only a bit later after they're properly engaged with the enemy do they become hostile, which is the grounds I based the "panic and inability to discern friend or foe" on.
This mod is very hard to find, randomly stumbled appon this mod when i was browsing trough sven coop and found a copy, gave it a try and didn’t understand a thing, so now i am here
i'd assume Stonehenge was chosen because its true purpose has always been pretty mysterious, and as such a lot of fiction has used it as the setting for random cult behaviour (like The Mystery of the Druids, for example).
I had to look it up but the Tec-9 wasn't developed until the 80's, the IMI UZI was developed in 56' though so they could have used that, but I'm not complaining, TEC-9 is cool oh I'm glad you brought the out of era weapons up
Huh??? It's been there since before 2015 though, I remember it being there and I haven't played it since well before that year. Do you mean it was a memorial because they developed the illness around the time of the mod being made or retroactively added it?
Nice bit of nostalgia. They Hunger was easily my favourite single-player mod for HL1, as a teen with too much free time in the early 2000s. And TBH, the main thing I remember from this was the first Zork sequence.
I'll always remember the brilliant simplicity of the scare with the first police officer. You see him off in the distance talking to someone and think "finally, an ally!" only to come closer and notice he's talking to a zombie. As you get closer he turns around and you see his face is *covered in blood* and he starts shooting you.
First playthrough of TH was the most memorable. Found it through Sven Coop, and it felt much grander before you learn the maps. Though I did start not liking the 3rd episode cause it loses the spooky vibe of ep1 and ep2. It was more like generic shooter with zombies, but it can still be fun. I remember hopping onto a random server late at night, we did like an episode or two, I hopped off, and the next night by pure chance the whole server was back to where I left off. I still like joining servers that run it, or rocking the vote to play TH on Sven.
I remember playing through the They Hunger trilogy after stumbling on it on ModDB somewhere around the early-mid 2010s. Was old news by then, but even as someone with no knowledge of it up until then I really enjoyed the experience overall, mostly because it has a really neat sort of Halloween-like atmosphere, where it's just the right combination of creepy, campy and 'retro' to make it feel very endearing and all-around fun.
They Hunger exist inside the game Sven coop and it's regularly played in servers where you can pick and choose a campaign through vote where people walk to what campaign they want.
Am I the only one who feels like this inspired Alan wake to some degree? Famous author brought somewhere remote so he can find inspiration for his next big hit. The story starts with them getting in a car crash and having a bizarre experience that sets the tone for the rest of the story.
They Hunger was one of those mods I never fully completed it but yeah, it's a very iconic one as it inspired many horror mods for Half-Life like Cry Of Fear, Afraid Of Monsters, Resident Evil Cold Blood, Grey and obviously Nightmare House 2.
I knew for a long while that AoM Classic uses zombie models from They Hunger, so out of pure curiosity I put them back in TH and played all three episodes. That was... best goddamn crossover I've seen in ages. First episode felt like genuine survival horror, especially on Hard mode!
I've been running through this with a buddy in the spirit of Halloween and its the perfect spooky season game, Id swap out my monitor for a CRT if i had one handy. The Sven co-op version has a lot of fixed models like the bloodied up headcrabs being changed to severed heads with freaky spider legs which is clearly drawing from The Thing, the giant bullsquid is now a fish monster which looks really sick and yeah the weapons are much better looking and more fitting for the era/theme, sadly enemy spawns are increased in sven so playing that version solo is VERY difficult for someone who isnt a half life veteran.
I remember playing this mod like 14 years ago, I think I was 13 - 14. I think I was right at the start, on a building where there's brickwalls behind spaces so sometimes there are zombies in there. One time I thought I had cleared everything so at some point I stood still near one of those darker spaces, then a zombie came out literally in front of me so you can imagine how scared I got back then and my heart was racing pretty fast. I think that was the last time I ever played that mod lol
I'd seen They Hunger all the way back in the primordial 2010-2015 TH-cam era (Spike n Barley) and played it in recent years on Sven Coop, but otherwise was unaware of the third chapter and the devs behind it
I wouldnt be suprised if Andreas Rönnberg was inspired by this while making afraid of monsters, or even cry of fear for that matter. Ill have to check this mod out, it looks pretty cool.

This is my favorite game/mod. I really love the atmosphere and while not perfect it's something that I love to go back every once in a while.
I am not fully disclosing for privacy sake, but Neil is alive he is not very active in social media but I've seen him post a few stuff here and there around 2021 from at least what I gather he seems fine and I can confirm it is him because one of the displayed posts is a meme that is corny as this mod.
This was soooooo good back in the day. Still is today. Cool to see someone cover this.
0:58 I thought that was the unabomber for a brief second
this is really a richter overtime moment
Early Half life modding was my whole inspiration in becoming a game dev. I didn't have much access to technology or internet but I did get to play things like Halflife and Unreal Tournament and that early age of ingenuity was such a beautiful moment. They hunger was one of those few things I did get to enjoy.
One of the best mods released for Half-Life, I still remember downloading it when it released, it was pretty scary for it's time. I looked forward to They Hunger 2 for Half-Life 2 for so long before they shut it down. I still hope we will see it someday.
This game permanently imprinted in my brain to randomly go "hungeeerr" and "fleshhhh" when playing games with my friend
I played this mod during covid. Each episode becomes increasingly more terrifying. The episodes are really well made, especially for the time.
Also
"Death to Humans!"
Throughout the whole video, when the picture of Neile came up I could only think of the unibomber. Then when you made the comparison at the end it cracked me up, thank god I was not the only person who thought that.
Good afternoon, guy named "Richter Overtime" who I assume works overtime. Thank you for the video.
This mod was such a classic! My first Half Life mod I ever played, and I thought it did a really good job with the atmosphere and scares.
Seroyga King Ring is not something i would not expect in is richter overtime video.
First spooky thing I've watched in October 🧡🎃
this game was so amazing, I remember my brother and I being so enthralled by this project
The military being hostile was explained in an audio log.
th-cam.com/video/Ad0KqF9Dcjw/w-d-xo.html
@@BenersantheBread The initial encounter with the first soldiers actually has them gesturing as though they're friendly, and only a bit later after they're properly engaged with the enemy do they become hostile, which is the grounds I based the "panic and inability to discern friend or foe" on.
@@uncanny-hector-1906 thanks for the info dude !

They hunger is still pretty popular in sven coop

i'd assume Stonehenge was chosen because its true purpose has always been pretty mysterious, and as such a lot of fiction has used it as the setting for random cult behaviour (like The Mystery of the Druids, for example).
i love they hunger man. you making my nostalgia part of my brain light up rn
Why don't you make videos anymore?
For those wondering what's the model at 0:30 is, it's called Big_Fox and it's found in the Sven Co-op 5.25 Playermodel Pack

can anyone tell me the name of the mod on 0:30 ? for scientific pourpuses...
I had to look it up but the Tec-9 wasn't developed until the 80's, the IMI UZI was developed in 56' though so they could have used that, but I'm not complaining, TEC-9 is cool
oh I'm glad you brought the out of era weapons up

So true. Thank god that the only one out of the 3 that're real are the gay skeletons...
I'm so scared of women

Came here from Zesty Jesus's stream. Absolutely loving the content you put out!
LOL thanks bro
Zombies, gay skeletons, women, not alive in the 1990s,you really ramped up the horror quick in this one.
Women?
2 spooky 4 me.
Neil Manke used to make Quake maps feel like he got the atmosphere from there.
the giant bullsquid underwater in episode 3 is actually a memorial made for one of the games creators who had sadly passed away in 2015

*me when i need to explain that my non binary friend is in need of nourishment in the fewest amount of words possible*: they hunger
I remember playing this mod when I was a teenager. It was super fun playing the mod, although the final boss was insanely tough.
0:29 name of the mod please for scientific purposes
it's named Big_Fox under sven coop 5.25 playermodel pack on steam (whole pack is 5gb tho)
0:00) The video barely even started and I'm in love with it already!

Gotta say i did not expect you to cover this. Very nice to see.
ngl pretty scary beats out every modern horror game
They Hunger is genuinely one of my favorite games.
why are the skeletons gay??
why not?
I'll always remember the brilliant simplicity of the scare with the first police officer. You see him off in the distance talking to someone and think "finally, an ally!" only to come closer and notice he's talking to a zombie. As you get closer he turns around and you see his face is *covered in blood* and he starts shooting you.
He/him hunger
I remember playing They Hunger but in Sven Co-op!
a caveman explaining to the elder caveman that his non-binary cavefriend is hungry:
Lmao
First playthrough of TH was the most memorable. Found it through Sven Coop, and it felt much grander before you learn the maps. Though I did start not liking the 3rd episode cause it loses the spooky vibe of ep1 and ep2. It was more like generic shooter with zombies, but it can still be fun.
I remember hopping onto a random server late at night, we did like an episode or two, I hopped off, and the next night by pure chance the whole server was back to where I left off.
I still like joining servers that run it, or rocking the vote to play TH on Sven.
i remember it, it was one of the first half life mods i played, i can still 'hear' the lines "mommy's hungry" "flesh creature" good times
I remember playing the first one when it came out. I had no idea they made 2 more! It was a great mod
All the times I played this back in the day and I never knew about that massive Bullsquid underwater.
They Hunger was my first taste of Half-life mods, it was very cool.
Am I the only one who feels like this inspired Alan wake to some degree? Famous author brought somewhere remote so he can find inspiration for his next big hit. The story starts with them getting in a car crash and having a bizarre experience that sets the tone for the rest of the story.
I love how you can see rad at 2:07
"I was not alive in the 1990s" hit me for 10 psychic damage
They Hunger was one of those mods I never fully completed it but yeah, it's a very iconic one as it inspired many horror mods for Half-Life like Cry Of Fear, Afraid Of Monsters, Resident Evil Cold Blood, Grey and obviously Nightmare House 2.
Fun fact: Darkstar is available if you install Half-Life 1 Mmod.
I knew for a long while that AoM Classic uses zombie models from They Hunger, so out of pure curiosity I put them back in TH and played all three episodes. That was... best goddamn crossover I've seen in ages. First episode felt like genuine survival horror, especially on Hard mode!
It would be cool to see someone remake the They Hunger trilogy in the Black Mesa version of the Source Engine.
In the sven coop campaign there is an mp40 too
Theres also a very fun bonus gamemode in the sven coop's version called escape
