  • In this video, we'll take a look at what I believe to be the best tactical comms available to civilians. Stick around if you're looking for rugged comms gear for your load out. We'll cover connecting the VX-6R to the MSA Sordin Mil CC headset using the Disco32 PTT. This will work for the VX-7, too. Peltor Comtac's are a good option if you can afford it.

    Haha love hearing about these field runs. Sheriff probably was admiring your gear but was hesitant to talk to you because only a crazy person would run in that heat. Well done on the 7 miler. Great content.

      You're too funny. The Sherrif Deputies are excellent here. I wouldn't have minded a chat with them. Next year the plan is to get into Search and Rescue (SAR) and it's run by the Sherrif's Office. I really enjoy these runs, but truth be told, I wear a puffer jacket in the house when it's below 80F, so the warmer temps are a blessing. Take care.

    Even though I'm not big into prepping. I'm down in Pima county and all your field videos are extremely helpful when it comes to operating in the same environment. Especially when the most common advice is get your antenna up in a tree.

      Glad you enjoyed it. And, cheers to another AZ neighbor. I'm working with Chameleon Antennas and I explained that if I was going to test their gear it would have to be a compromised deployment given that we don't have good trees for antennas. The VX-6 is perfect for fishing and our environment.

    Love the vid! Just want to mention for people on more of a budget, Howard Leight sells the Impact Sports which have active stereo audio passthrough with adjustable gain. Not nearly as good audio quality as something like the Sordins or Peltors but definitely better than my default hearing when turned up. Running one of those with a hand mic and a 3.5mm connection runs under $100 for earpro with radio passthrough, only downsides are the mic isn't on headset and it isn't waterproof. I have a setup that’s similar but different. It consists of an Anytone AT-D878BT, an Aftershox OpenCom headset, and the Anytone Bluetooth PTT button. The headset uses bone conduction, so it doesn’t interfere with my situational awareness. And since it’s Bluetooth, there are no wires to mess with. It’s great for running, hiking, and biking. However, since it doesn’t provide any hearing protection, it wouldn’t be so great in a true tactical application. It’s pretty discrete, though.

    I did something similar, but ultimately didn't like the Disco32 PTT due to hot mic issues. They have a cheesy protector that you can glue on, but I ripped that off as well. I found another maker of PTT's that are great quality and they make one for the VX-6R along with just about every other radio out there. Sordin headsets are great. Has Sordin ever fixed their craptacular battery contacts that completely lose spring tension after 2-4 years causing the headset to become inert? It’s a well known issue and has been since the early years of GWOT. I have a pair it happened too. MSA wanted an insane amount of money to even look at them and I would have had to ship them to France for that. I got TCI to fix them but this was before Safariland bought them out. They work fine now 10+ years on.
    I have 3 sets of professional grade ear pro. TCI, Sordin, and Peltor. The TCI’s sound and perform the best, then the Sordin. The peltors are ok but there is a noticeable difference in the sound quality. Not enough to matter in 99.9% of situations but you can tell the difference.

      Great question. The 817/818 should fit in the Flatpack. I have not tested it as I need a top-flap for my operating style. The other problem is routing the cables and gear (battery) to the smaller pouch on the front. I guess you can poke a hole for a pass through.
      However, I did test the larger FT-857D and FT-891 in the Flatpack Plus. It fits and believe I have an old picture on my Instagram feed. I also moved away from it as I needed a bag with a top flap. I am in the process of making a custom bag for the 818 which be available for sale soon. I am showing off the early designs on www.buymeacoffee.com/thetechprepper/posts

    Too bad we feel the need to justify the money we spend, but there are haters out there...(forgetting that some operators have transceivers that cost over $10k). Good stuff, fitness is also a HUGE part of portable ops in your case....often overlooked by a lot of folks who show off their "go kits". Be safe.

      You make a good point. With each video, I just want to be clear on what my goals are as they are not everyone else's goals. It's as an attempt to cut down on all the emails I get from pedantic hams that tell me that my operating style is invalid and that I need a high-end HF rig with a 65' tower. As for some of the feedback I receive from the tactical group, the Baofeng radio and less expensive headsets with 3.5mm will not survive out here. I agree there is a place for this gear, but it's not for me. The best I can do is share my goals and honest experience. Thanks for taking the time to write a very productive comment. I appreciate your support. Cheers.

    As someone with zero experience with communications, and just beginning to look into things, do you have any experience with Codan 2110 or 6120? If so, what’s the fundamental differences between the Yaesu you’ve been reviewing in terms of performance?

    • @TheTechPrepper
      @TheTechPrepper  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's a loaded question and can't answer that here. There's no comparison as Yaesu does not offer a manpack. However, I have made several videos on my attempt at making manpacks built on various Yaesu rigs. Search my channel for "ARMOLOQ" or "manpack". I'm also designing a platform called EmComm Tools that attempts to provide many of the features found in these military systems. I plan to sell them as full kits at some point as means to exit my day job. Stay tuned. I'll get into encryption, messaging, mapping and ALE in the coming months.

    How’s the battery life for the radio? Is there any larger batteries?

    • @TheTechPrepper
      @TheTechPrepper  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are no larger batteries as it would compromise the IP67 seal. The battery life is limited compared to other radios that have larger batteries like my FT-60. I typically bring an extra Lithium Ion battery as well as the Alkaline battery tray. As a matter of practice, I use the minimum power to carry out the contact. This is typically 300mW, however, I can go up to 5 watts if needed with the Lithium Ion batteries. In general, I can support an 8-hour public service event on one battery. Also, you can directly charge these in the field with the 12v input.

    Earmor m32 $90+ boafeng Uv9r $35 + disco 32 ptt boafeng multipin $113= $238 total I’m thinking about rolling the dice on this setup should be waterproof. Think I should go with the vx6R + murs mod over the Uv9r?

    • @TheTechPrepper
      @TheTechPrepper  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Only you can make that decision based on your requirements. It's a bit like comparing apples and oranges as those two radios are in completely different classes in terms of built quality and features. If you need ultra rugged gear that will survive monsoon season (like I do), the VX-6R is one of very few radios up to the task. If you are not hard on your gear and don't need all of the extra features like wide band receive, then go with the UV9R. Personally, I would never risk my life on any radio from China. For me, the VX-6R is a field tool that I use daily in environments where I have no cell access. Good luck!

    Okay new hear. Do run GRMS or Ham and why?

    • @TheTechPrepper
      @TheTechPrepper  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll sort of touch on that question in this week's video. I'm a believer in having both licenses, but if you need more than just local coverage via simplex and repeaters as well the ability to be a vastly more effective operator, there's nothing like getting your amateur radio license. When you move into HF on the ham bands you give yourself the ability to talk to anyone in your city, county, state, country and even the world with no infrastructure. GMRS is limited to local line of sight communication unless you go through a repeater.

      That was the goal. I'm curious to see how long the VX-6R and related accessories last. The FT-60 made it two years and covered about 2,500 miles of trail time before it died in these conditions. Along the way I broke two Diamond Antennas and two Baofengs. It's copious amount of sweat, but that's the only way for the body to cool out here. Glad to provide an alternate case for this gear. I know it's not for everyone. I figure if it works under these conditions, it should be indestructible for general, light-duty use. Cheers.
