  • This week, we'll be covering what to look for in a protein supplement for dialysis patients.
Dialysis requires extra protein (very different from the CKD diet). Because of this, many people on dialysis are encouraged or required to take a protein supplement.
But when you have to limit other nutrients like phosphorus, potassium, and sodium, how do you know which one to choose?
Jen covers what to look for in a dialysis protein supplement here along with some of her preferred supplements that she has recommended to patients.

My husband just got diagnosed, we found out his kidneys are at 14%. I'm trying to learn as much as i can about this. Thank you 🙏🏼

Wow! You answered my question and more.
I should have watched the whole clip without messaging first.
    Thank you😅

    GREAT video!
If I understand correctly, we are trying to address adequate ALBUMIN levels and protein intake is the main way to increase it, correct? That is, if albumin is okay, we can eat less protein.
(Thank you for adding info on different ways albumin levels are affected. I have seen studies noting vegetarians with moderate protein intake have higher albumin, which is interesting)
With PD patients, some still have residual kidney function. Have you seen any difference in how a health team might address protein intake? Is it correct to assume all dialysis patients must maintain a higher protein intake while using treatment?
Thank you! I know it is tricky to address this type of question. I mostly want to develop the right information to bring to my providers and get the most out of the conversation. :]

I've been on dialysis with end stage renal failure for 3 years. Im still urinating. My doctor insists on a high enough protein diet to keep my albumin high. What do you think?

Is the association between low albumin and immune response a correlation or causation?
In your experience, have you seen a decine on a patient's health due to low protein?
    Thanks.

What about EAA (ESSENTIAL AMINO ACID) SUPPLEMENTS

These can still have a "protein load" the kidneys will have to work on. Be sure to talk with your provider before starting anything.

Sounds like some serious stuff is going on for you, Aaron! This is definitely a case to connect with the dietitian in your dialysis clinic. They'll be able to provide you the best guidance. Good luck!
