PLZ ADVISE!? Just found a friends husband is late/end stage kidney disease, does dialysis, has cirrhosis of liver, holding fluid around gut, somewhat distended. I told her about the fasting I started, and the idea of it. I advised he might want to start fasting, but cautioned that I didnt know if it could help at this point, or if if could make things worse, I PROMISED I would find an answer one way or the other, please give me your opinion on this Dr Fung, I completely understand its not medical advice etc, but if you tell me its worth exploring and probably wont make things worse I will pass that along to them and work my ass off to save his life if its possible. I pray you see this.. Thank you for anything you can tell me

Through your fasting program, I was able to go from stage four kidney disease to totally healthy kidneys with no kidney disease. I remember my doctor getting goosebumps when she got the report I didn’t even know it was possible I was just trying to heal myself from my diabetes. I lost 100 pounds I pretty much took a hard line with my diet. I basically eat protein with vegetables and a few fruits I’ve cut out potatoes, rice, bread, pasta, sugar I don’t drink calories I’m satisfied with my diet I don’t feel deprived. I do make keto sweets like mug cakes I’m 65 years. and still losing weight slowly my A1c went from a 10.5 to a six and I expect it to be lower at my next doctor visit. I saw my Doctor again and my A1C is now 5.4. I fast when I feel like it on and off. And I eat meat and low carb vegetables, nuts and keto cookies, candies and love mug cakes with wipe cream sugar free of course. I’ve cut out sugar, flour, bread, potatoes, rice, pasta, I eat beans very little. I love roasted vegetables. I eat less and less meat as I’m losing my taste for it as I get older. I love keto recipes although I’m not on a keto diet. When I fast I eat at about 2:00 in the afternoon and not after 4:00. But I don’t fast all the time I go on and off. Daily exercise is extremely important. Also anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour. Praying to God for direction was key in my success.

    • @kokosage
      @kokosage 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@pineapple4819 No. None of the damage was diabetes related. I was in the hospital with a kidney infection from my first-ever kidney stone at age 62. i had a HUGE stone that blocked my urine, requiring I wear a Urostomy bag for a month. The day before surgery the stone mysteriously "disappeared" entirely. However, shortly after that I had a UTI that turned into Sepsis, then Septic shock and three days in the ER. That damaged the kidneys. I went from healthy to unhealthy (Stage five) in a matter of weeks. I also accidentally overdosed myself with Vitamin B-4 (which I was taking for fatigue. BAD choice as it's a kidney killer). Once the septic shock/sepsis was resolved/cured and I stopped taking the B-4 I was left with damaged kidneys, but not diseased kidneys. I've done well for the last year and a half and my doctor says I don't need dialysis as long as kidneys aren't injured through dehydration or accident. I eat right, continue to lose weight and stay hydrated.

Oh! I've been waiting for you to address this! I'm caretaker for my older brother who has stage three kidney disease from chronic high blood pressure so he has CAA (Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy) and had a stroke 12 years ago.
I've often thought keto and fasting could help him. Doctors are hesitant since he's on so much blood pressure meds but agree weight loss would be beneficial. Maybe even just to keep it from progressing as fast? He currently eats two meals a day and I do the best I can with low carbs but that's what he loves.
Learning how to fast changed my life by losing over 150 lbs. I'm off my blood pressure meds and I'm now in my best health at age 59. I want to do all I can to help my brother.
I will go back and watch your video about the fasting mimicking diet.

I went from 3 blood pressure meds and totally uncrontrolled blood pressure to 120/70 blood pressure in one month by fasting 72 hours once a week and trying reducing sugar.
Some of the many benefits of fasting and a lower carb whole food diet on the immune system, blood pressure, blood sugar and anti-aging, all backed up by clinical data:
The hunger hormone ghrelin lowers over time with extended fasting and rise from dieting
Thymus stem cells are regenerated, which suppresses aging and renews the immune system.
Fasting stimulates phagocytosis, the ingestion of bacteria and viruses by the immune system.
Blood pressure is quickly and dramatically lowered, which is very important for a good outcome with the current pandemic.
Fasting increases nitric oxide, which has manifold postive effects like reducing arterial plaque.
Weight loss from fasting only loses10% lean tissue and 90% fat compared to the typical 25% lean tissue and 75% fat lost when calorically restricting for long periods.
Blood clotting is reduced and blood clots and arterial plaque are reabsorbed into the body.
Vitamin D plasma levels are increased, and vitamin D in turn increases autophagy!
Blood sugar and insulin are lowered, allowing white blood cells to move more freely throughout the body and do their job. Ideal blood sugar is around 80. Some viruses activate glycolosis (the release of sugar in the body) and clinically it has been shown that decreasing glucose metabolism in the body weakens the influenza virus.
Fasts of several days will not affect short term female fertility and may increase long term fertility especially in women with PCOS.
It's absolutely fine for cortisol to be high while fasting, because it produces sugar from fat instead of lean tissue th-cam.com/video/giEDadzoErs/w-d-xo.html
Does the body prefernetially prefer glucose as a fuel? No, it never uses mainly glucose for fuel and using glucose for fuel is very biochemically damaging! th-cam.com/video/Nf1jwMbvNxw/w-d-xo.html
The hormone Leptin is an immunomodulator that keeps the body from attacking itself and obesity causes leptin resistance. Fasting very quickly reduces leptin resistance and leptin levels and one day of fasting can cut your leptin levels in half and gets your immune system working properly again!
Is fasting just the same as caloric restriction? No! Dieting increases the hunger hormone ghrelin while fasting decreases it and has many other health benefits! th-cam.com/video/sVl-nilhWLc/w-d-xo.html
When you move out of MTOR your body shuts down the building blocks of the cell which are used to produce organelles and proteins. This means the mechanisms needed by viruses to replicate are by and large unavailable when you are in a deeply fasted state.
It stimulates the AMPK complex and activates autophagy. Autophagy (literally self eating) will cause cells to recycle foreign matter such as viruses and kill cancerous and senescent cells. AMPK does many helpful things in the body including activating the body's antioxidant defenses.
Does fasting burn muscle? In most cases no! th-cam.com/video/teQIaU6wp2o/w-d-xo.html
Fasting can make you gain muscle faster: th-cam.com/video/5RM8GRzsIIg/w-d-xo.html
Deep ketosis virtually eliminates chronic inflammation in the body. This can offset the life threatening symptoms of viral pneumonia which effectively kills you through inflammation. This also creates BHB ketones in your body, which also help your immune system and anti-oxidative system, especially in the brain. Ketones also provide an additional energy source during infection, which is critical when trying to fight off a bug. In fact you can have as much as three times the total energy available in your blood when you are in deep ketosis, or even more.
It increases mitochondrial function and repairs mitichondrial DNA, leading to improved ATP production and oxygen efficiency and thereby making cells better able to fight off infection. Increased mitochondrial function also has the added benefit of increasing your metabolism and cancer prevention!
Fasts from 36-96 h actually INCREASE metabolic rate! th-cam.com/video/BeC_gIR2Z14/w-d-xo.html
Your body releases interferon which is also triggered by the body during viral attacks to shut down the replication ability of the surrounding cells and stop infections.
After 72 hours or more fasted, your body actually recycles large numbers of immune bodies and creates new ones, rejuvenating your entire system.
When you fast, this stimulates apoptosis in senescent or genetically damaged cells. This kills these cells off completely. Senescent cells are responsible for the effects of aging and are the root cause of the development of cancer. If it were possible to destroy them all it would completely stop aging and cancer. That is not possible but fasting can help limit these effects by killing off many of the affected cells and limiting the future effects of aging.
Fasting also releases BDNF and NGF in the blood which stimulates new nerve and brain cell growth, helping a great deal with diseases like MS, peripheral neuropathy and Alzheimers.
In fact, the biochemical regulator of BDNF production is beta-hydroxybutyrate, which is the same ketone the body produces to nourish the brain while fasting.
Autophagy induced by fasting even helps hair regrow.
      What breaks a fast? th-cam.com/video/7aRLsCpxy3o/w-d-xo.html
Dieters losing weight through intermittent fasting show greater reduction in waist size and increase in insulin sensitivity for the same weight lost and alternate day fasters were shown to lose fat while gaining muscle at the same time over a six month period.
Does fasting lower testosterone? No, it raises it and builds muscle!
      th-cam.com/video/fJUDucBWv4s/w-d-xo.html
Fasting has been shown to increase bone marrow volume by 10% and levels of carnosine in the body in as little as a few weeks.
Fasting also increases telomere length, negating some of the effects of aging at a cellular level.
Eating one meal a day can bring most of these benefits to a lesser degree, and adding a few entire days off from eating per week will have even more effect especially when starting to feel poorly.
Exogenous ketones can aid with fasting, making it easier in healthy people and allowing some people with specific issues to fast in spite of them without worrying as much about hypoglycemia.
Children, pregnant or nursing women should not fast for periods longer than 16 hours. People with pancreatic tumors or certain forms of hypoglycemia generally cannot fast at all. Type 1 diabetics can also fast but it is more complicated and should be approached with caution as it could lead to ketoacidosis. Those with Addison's disease may also be unable to fast without liberal use of exogenous ketones, depending on severity. If you experience extreme symptoms of some kind, especially dizziness then simply break the fast and seek advice.

I had read reviews of Dr Fungs book and had scheduled that I'd read it in January 2017.
I also decided I would weight myself before and after sleep and keep a table on paper in my bedroom.
Reading his book was a bit painful. 30% of each page is references to studies.
It took me about 20 days to get to OMAD.
I spent month #2 trying to find something I could eat once a day that had flour in it. I lost that battle.
By the end of month #3, I had my first 3.5 days fast and my first 7 days fast.
30 kilograms were gone by the mark of 91 days.
I'm still carrying my weight just 3-5 kilos above that mark.
      I didn't exercise at all.
I did not go to a gym.
      I did not lift weights.
I barely even went out for walks.
I bought a copy of his book to everyone in my family (uncles and all).
      Thank you Dr Fung! 😉

The kidney gets destroyed because the kidney is working hard to get rid of high blood sugar by putting it into the urine.

Omg this video is making me hopeful for the first time in a few days. I saw on MyChart that two urine tests now have said I have the trace protein and trace blood in my urine, and I went in specifically for flank pain. A CT scan has been done and there's no obvious stones, tumor or cancer. It's not super painful, but it is noticeable -- like something is up. I've always been overweight as someone with PCOS but my diet definitely got worse during the pandemic. I'm really hoping that I'm just in this beginning phase of damage that is reversible and that's it's not something worse. I was already looking at fasting before all this because I need to do something after gaining too much weight the last three years, but now I'm moving into thinking of IF/fasting/Whole30 stuff as probably a necessity not a maybe for me at this point. Hoping whatever I did to inflame my kidneys can get calmed down.

My CKD is not from diabetes but is from sarcoidosis. I am following the IF eating plan. I monitor and limit my intake of oxalates, phosphorous, potassium, and sodium. I also drink a lot of water. What surprised me is how little info there is out there on avoiding what I was previously eating & what most Americans think of as a "healthy" diet - lots of leafy greens, Greek yogurt, lots of pinto beans, brown rice, whole wheat breads loaded with nuts. I had to completely rethink my food menu. Now I stick to white rice, white bread, non-dairy milks & yogurts, and I cut way back on all the nuts I used to snack on. I try to stick to white pasta and chicken dinners. My only big issue is what to snack/nibble on when I don't want to eat a full meal. I really wish there was more attention called to what is "healthy" or unhealthy for compromised kidneys.

I had an EGFR of 59. Went on to lose 63 pounds and my EGFR went up to 84. I did some fasting but I mostly restricted calories. If my calories were eaten too early in the day, then I just went hungry until the next day.

The "fasting mimicking diet" is quite different from an alternate-day fasting protocol. I wonder what the results would look like using what I think of as "real" fasting and/or alternate day fasting schedule--more frequent real fasts than just 5 days a month out of 6 months?

I did a 100 hour water fast with proper preperation and also after-fasting phase. It fixed my super fast deteriorating Kidneys. eGFR and Creatinine all became great again. My doctor got surprised when he saw the results. :) I did WF many times in the past, hence I made all the dangerous mistakes one can think of. Too bad I am a bit skinny, otherwise I'd want to go full 5 or even 7 days, perhaps even 10 days. I once or twice did 5 days. -- Please be adviced that WF can cause harm if you do it wrong. Read multiple books about it in case you consider it. Also, get your doctor involved. I had him test my blood and urine multiple times.

As you stated in the video, fasting can help tremendously in the early stages of kidney disease. Therefore, protecting oneself from kidney disease is yet another benefit of fasting.
I used to have pain from passing kidney stones a few times a year. Since I learned to fast 4 years ago, (for other health reasons) I haven't had any pain from stones... not even one. I do stay hydrated, fast regularly, and avoid highly processed and ultra processed foods.
Thank you for another informative video, Dr. Fung.

it only makes sense to give rest to your body and organs by limiting food consumption to avoid overworking the engine (metabolism)...the American diet is eat whatever you want, whenever you want, and however much you want - also known as the American death diet - too much of anything will kill you but the practice enriches food and drug corporations

Hi Jason, very interesting study. You should address the v9 (Follow up) results in this study. I noticed several measurements recede. Was this as a result of going back to standard diet or natural progression? In either case it sheds light on the long term impact of mimicking-fasting diet

I realize this is purely anecdotal however, I've personally experienced a lessening of the symptoms of CFS/ME and fibromyalgia by keeping myself in ketosis with intermittent fasting and eating a balanced ketogenic menu plan.
I've been doing this steady since March and I don't miss the carbs. Sure some foods might get my attention but not my cravings, except perhaps a perfectly grilled rib steak cooked medium rare with a pat of fresh butter and parsley
    Which is ketogenic 😉🤣😂

Fasting is sustaining from food. It’s a not eating period during the day,you can adjust it as it best suits you. Most people are doing it by skipping breakfast and having first meal in the afternoon. The other thing you can do is doing a full day of not eating or couple days-it’s a bit difficult in the beginning, but you get used to it,and you realise your body loves it.

@@marianamunoz6075 My advice is - don’t overthink and trust the process. If you have a healthy diet and lifestyle-this shouldn’t be a problem. Lots of water and herbal teas (no sugar),you can have black coffee. The more you do it,the easier it gets. Few years ago,I couldn’t even go 3 hours without food! The best way to break the fast is NOT carbs! Something that is super good for your gut- bone broth,probiotics- kefir, sauerkraut, and fats like avocado and eggs. The fasting is way more tolerable when you have a low carb high fat diet, your body us more adapted. If in the beginning you feel weak or dizzy, you can have some salt (electrolites) it won’t break the fast
      Good luck
