Fun fact: The actress who killed the other recruit during the live fire exercise married him in real life after the movie and they are still together. Basically, she blew his brain out and he said "That's my girl".
"Maybe there's a miscommunication" A lot of people miss this at the start but the reason the bugs Attacked earth is because some space Mormons settled an uninhabited planet in bug space. Basically the Federation came into contact with the bugs & after realising they are dangerous (they were doing tests on drones they had captured at the start of the movie) they decided to quarantine bug space, however the Space Mormons ignored the Federation Quarantine and went into bug space anyway. The bugs massacred the Space Mormons & then decided Humans are a potential threat & decided to wipe them out pre-emptively, the initial Asteroid isn't a warning shot as at the start of the movie the bugs have launched more asteroids but those have been shot down now that the Federation has set up defences. The bugs are a completely different species & therefore have a very different outlook, they are utilitarian, most of them are mindless drones that are controlled by the brain bugs so they don't care about individuals. To the bugs the morality of killing millions of people doesn't matter, what matters is securing bug territory from potential threats.
Considering Klendathu was on the other side of the galaxy the asteroid that wiped out Buenos Aires would have to be sent millions if not billions of years in advance. There's several possible explanations for this cunundrum but I'll write about the one I find the most plausible considering the world building presented: It was a false flag. Humanity has come across the bugs while expanding into the galaxy and deemed them to be too dangerous hence their whole territory being quarantined. Even after the mormon settlement got slaughtered the prevailing mentality was to leave the bugs and their territory alone. The military industrial complex needed something big to justify invasion and siphon the necessary funds and research towards that goal. Remember the planetary defense system showed up at the point before the flashback so it's online only after the Buenos Aires incident and after the military got the tremendous amount of funding and public support they needed. Cynical old me doesn't see the movie as a satyre to fascism at all but a nod to the future of the system we're currently in.
To be fair she's a very immature and selfish person, however I always felt like this movie was just a case of "wrong person" she should be with Xander and Johnny should absolutely have taken Dizz's offer far far earlier, it's tragic what happened to her, but alas the heart wants what it wants and often people avoid a good thing for what they feel like they really want
Awesome reaction guys. Love this movie. One of my fav parts is when Rico is making the video for Carmen and says "Sometimes i think i won't make it, but then i think about what you're doing and i try harder" .. cracks me up everytime. Would love to see you two react to The Butterfly Effect. It's one of those movies you will remember forever.
I'm pretty sure anyone who's seen this film has never read the book it was based off of. Myself included. I can count the number of times I've watched ST1 without ever looking to its source material. The thing is, if you look past the clear messages set by the producer, it's very clearly a battle of species. One which was unavoidable the minute federal mandate on bug territory went ignored by the Mormon colonists.
I saw alot of movies back in the day on basic cable, so it was a while before I realized how much they actually cut from the originals... (regarding nudity)
Harvard is around in star trek. It was founded in 1636. The movie is set in the 23rd century and I still don't get how zander enlisted the same day everybody else did yet he somehow got through flight school and became an instructor quickly enough to get paired up with carmen. Its a really weird plot hole
I'm sorry but I have to give you another reason to dislike Carmen. When that asteroid came and knocked off their communications Tower, they couldn't tell anyone about it. it wouldn't have happened if Carmen wouldn't have changed the trajectory of the ship. 23:52 . By her changing that direction, that made them come in contact with the asteroid and knock the communication tower off also redirecting that asteroid to go to Earth , killing Johnny's parents unknowingly. So yes, Carmen assisted the asteroid in killing 8 million + people.
That's not quite true, while she did alter the trajectory the Asteroid was still aimed at Earth, in the book it stated that the bugs initial target was Geneva (where the Federation's command structure was) but even without the book we see at the start the bugs launching more asteroids at earth, the bugs were trying to cripple the Federations military so they couldn't mount a counter offence (much like the Japanese did with the Pearl Harbour Bombings).
The bugs were never dumb. The recognize human technology, they are able to organize AA cannons and are able to launch meteors across the galaxy. They are totally winning the war.
You should watch The Expanse if only to expand the audience. The show has such a dedicated cult fanbase following that youre guarenteed views and subs..
31:19 nah the bugs are just genocidal by nature. They believe the majority of other races to be inferior and their only purpose extinction. This was later lore in the franchise.

You do realize that this is what a conservative republic utopia would look like. The society would actual have true equality, no trophies for everyone ideologies and demonstrate extreme patriotism to funnel students directly into the military by providing guaranteed citizenship. Still has all the propaganda due to how society socially engineers its population. Its always been a beloved classic because movies rarely show this possibility, utopias are usually described as liberal societies. Its pretty unique.
And that’s kind of a good thing, the society it portrays. One that is progressive, but not self-destructively progressive. It takes liberal values but tempers it with conservative pragmatism.
It's not exactly a Conservative republic utopia, it's more so a Libertarian's wet dream. The Federation doesn't actually exert much governmental control outside of wartime where as conservative republicanism does.
I watch it when i was 18 years 1997 in cinema as a german. I meets humor. But the film was always "Nazis in Space", the kids in this movie were like my grandparents at there age, brainwashed to serve.
Grades don't mean much for getting into ivy league school if you have money and connections. Even the simpsons parodied that years ago with the whole thing about the donation required to get mr burns's kid accepted would be an international airport
The only problem I have with this film is that it was made by a guy who has no idea what ACTUAL fascism is. Nothing except the uniforms and propaganda is remotely fascistic.
Paul Verhoeven films are all worth a watch. Great Job!
The Paul V trilogy: RoboCop, Total Recall, Starship Troopers!

Loved her reaction, that was exactly how I felt when Dizzy died.
Clancy Brown is Zim. The same guy who voices Lex Luther in Superman animated series. I guess Zim busted himself down to Private.
Also voices mister Krabs
And savage oppress
SpongeBob and Clone Wars.

Damn this movie crazy as hell lol … gave Rico the “ Dear John, ” video message & his name is Johnny 🤣🤣😭
