I cannot get enough of Paul Verhoeven's movies they are so unique compared to anything else I have seen! I hope you enjoyed my reaction to this movie! If there are any messages or references I missed please let me know down below i would be super interested to hear about them!
I know that there are a few other Starship Trooper movies but I do not think I will be reacting to the rest of them. Again thank you for watching!!

@@darkwolf1202to be fair, the Terran Federation wasn’t at War with the Arachnids yet, so the Mobile Infantry was still more a Peacetime Security Force, dealing with terrorists and Militant Seperatists. And most of humanity underestimated the capabilities and intelligence of the Arachnids.
Sorry Titanic, but Starship Troopers was the best movie of 1997.
I still haven't seen Titanic. I've seen Starship Trooper. Proof right there.

Good lord this. Saw Titanic at the cinema, they mixed up the reels and then went back to where they messed up so I ended up watching it for FOUR HOURS. And the 1950's version 'A Night to Remember' is way shorter and way better anyway. As for Starship Troopers, totally agree, hilarious fun - and I honestly think the effects haven't been bettered yet!

Fun fact: When James Cameron filmed Aliens, the actors who played Marines actually read the novel Starship Troopers to get the mindset of how futuristic space marines operated. In fact, you'll see a lot of videogames and future sci-fi militaries that adopt traits from the lore of Starship Troopers.

His scores always sounded epic, no matter what, his music could get the blood pumping. As a comparison, check out the difference between his score for 1987 Robocop and the music score for the 2014 reboot by..... some guy who has been forgotten!
If you haven’t seen it, check out Demolition Man sometime. I think you’d appreciate the action and sci-fi satire of that film as well.

Dina Meyer has been a huge crush of mine ever since this movie.
First time watching of "Total recall" is still ahead of you, go for it because it will not disappoint you. Real epic movie from Paul Verhoeven and Arnold Schwarzenegger with bubch of upporting Verhoeven's actors you like 👍🏻

In the novel, Harris' character dies on the page he is introduced on. Just one of the many classmates Rico lost in the Big War. And Carmen was just a casual acquaintance. They made a few changes for the movie as the novel doesn't have a romantic plotline.

The drill sergeant (Clancy Brown) was the main guard in Shawshank Redemption... If you saw that, that's where you recognized him from. :)

@@RolyPolyOllieReactions Clancy Brown also plays one of my favorite villains in the movie ‘Highlander’. You need to watch that one also, it is a very good fantasy movie starring Sean Connery.
When you watch Predator 2 (if you haven’t) you will also see Jake Busey’s dad. He really looks like a younger version of his dad, it’s insane.

4:05 the opening scene is very much in the style of Leni Riefenstahl's Triumph des Willens (Triumph of the Will), a 1935 Nazi propaganda film. Charlie Chaplin's The Great Dictator references the style of filmmaking as well, and in 1941, the British Ministry of Information spliced some of the footage together to make a film called "Lambeth Walk: Nazi Style", which apparently made Goebbles so angry he ran out of the screening room shouting profanities. So totally worth it.
You got the same style of imagery from Soviet, North Korea, China and even USA. Riefenstahl is just on a whole different level with hundreds of thousands of people in one shot instead of a couple of thousands.

This movie was very misunderstood as a satire when it came out, no idea why as the damn nazi uniforms are obvious. Also the scenes from tv interviews and propaganda are almost like in Robocop (same director). Anyway, great movie and effects still hold up due to large amount of actual minatures/models used. Also, go watch Total Recall and The Running Man.
As I recall Verhoeven said something along the line of "war makes people into fascists" was the basic idea of the movie. Hence the Nazi-style uniforms and iconography.
The problem is that the Federation isn't fascist. At all. It fails at every possible level of consideration. If Verhoeven really wanted to make a movie with that theme, he shouldn't have used Starship Troopers. But Verhoeven couldn't be bothered to read the book, and the few segments of the political philosophy of the novel that were included from the book directly refute his theme.
On the other hand, Robocop is Verhoeven's satirical critique of capitalism, and all it really shows is that Verhoeven doesn't understand capitalism.
God, I love that we have to have “libertarian” apologetics in every single video about Starship Troopers. Oh well, if my ideology supported fucking nazis I’d do my best to spread propaganda too.
The federation is fascist. Starship Troopers, the novel, is fascist.

Fascism is the fetishization of state power. The citizen (and non-citizen) owe the state their total obedience. The state owes the citizen (and non-citizen) nothing. It’s a one-way obligation. This is the exact antithesis of the Federation. And the exact antithesis of Heinlein’s general political beliefs. The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress is an overtly libertarian work. Much of his other work explicitly endorses the heroic defiance of arbitrary authority.
Heinlein criticized the idea of letting just any dumbass vote. When the people voting for the laws have no experience with or understanding of how law is enforced (much like the modern world) we get people who vote to impose regulations on others, then bitch about how those regulations are enforced. Like with the whole “defund the police” idiocy of the summer.
If you are unwilling to personally enforce the laws you support, you should not have any say in whether those laws are enacted. If you are unwilling to personally enforce the law, you should not be compelled to do so. *That* is the Federation. How is this “fascist”?
@@flatebo1 Verhoeven understood it well enough and the screenwriter had read the book dozens of times since he was a kid. The Federation is clearly an authoritarian regime with updated Fascist adjacent ideology. It amazes me that people still defend Heinlein with regard to the book. It's one thing to argue that his brand of authoritarianism works for _____ reasons, but to deny that it is anything but benevolent goes too far.

But I have found that the majority of people defending the book fail to see the totality of its concept because they are unable to step outside themselves and analyze the Federation objectively. They never bother to ask themselves the most basic, simple question about the whole concept: How well would I be treated in that society if I disagreed with its tenants? Anyone that has read the book knows the answer: They'd be treated very poorly. And with the utmost violence. And that violence would be celebrated.

Your the only reactor that watched this movie and noticed the defined line between classes within the military lower mid and upper. Kudos to you also noteing that in there world progress and stability only come from conflict Its called the (war economy ) and all there tech and progress has only come from centuries of war.
Clancy Brown might be best known to us older guys from Highlander (great film you should watch if you haven’t!) He was also the voice of Lex Luthor on the Superman and Justice League animated shows.
He was great in Carnivàle (TV Series 2003-2005) which was cancelled too soon.
For the younger folks, he voiced Mr. Krabs from spongebob.
I got hired right out of high school to work on a team that supported the computers used to render this movie and I was so ignorant at the time because I had no idea why everybody was so geeked out over how awesome the movie was going to be. I of course eventually saw the movie and then ended up reading the book which is a life-changing experience for those of you who haven't done so. It was funny having to sign all these non-disclosure agreements just to do tech support on a project I didn't have any understanding of.

Also i used to get so mad in movies and shows where the main character is pining over someone but someone more beautiful and obviously better is in love with them. They can never see it til its too late

For more Poledouris do yourself a favour and watch "The Hunt for Red October", directed by J. McTiernan and starring the great late Sean Connery. Or the "The 13th Warrior" also by McTiernan. Amazing score as well, just watched last week for the 100th time :)
The 13th Warrior was composed by Jerry Goldsmith who was another legendary composer.

I'm actually glad this movie got made as a satire. Now, I think Heinlein would not have liked it, because the original book was not written that way. But I like satire. Once upon a time, a satire book was written in response to Starship Troopers, but I doubt that will ever see a proper film treatment (Bill, the Galactic Hero by Harry Harrison) so having Verhoeven's satire is the next best thing for me.

Hi! He who played the "put your hand on that wall!!" officer (Clancy Brown), is a classic actor. One of his best roles, I think, is in "Deadly Persuite/Shoot to Kill" with Sidney Poytier and Tom Berenger from 1988! 😃😃👍

Paul Verhoeven also directs "Flesh + Blood". One of the best medieval action films ever made and the wonderfully schlocky "Showgirls". Critics hated the latter, but it was not meant to be taken too seriously. It's a cult classic.

There was an animated Starship Troopers series in the 90's.
If you liked the movie, you should consider reading the book. It's not that long, so you could get through it pretty quickly. The movie doesn't touch on a few of the cooler things from the book ... like how in the book they don't go down to the planet in drop ships, they wear Iron Man style suits and are fired out of a giant cannon towards the planet! And they all have mini nukes as grenades on their suit, so they just chuck nukes all over the place!! It's a cool book. Totally worth checking out if you liked the movie.
Watkins had a long-distance scope on his regular infantry rifle. He is known as a Designated Marksman which is different from a Sniper. Also director Verhoeven tends to incorporate satire in his films and in this case, he emphasized the theme of Fascism in this futuristic portrayal of mankind. However, read the Starship Troopers (1959) book by Robert Heinlein if you want to learn the original portrayal as Verhoeven admits he got bored while reading the book and decided to take the vision in a different direction.

You'd have to have a lack of intellect to miss the sarcasm in this film. If anything, it's a "space anti-fascism" movie, but whatever, stay in your simple face value world.
Do yourself a favor and don't even attempt to watch any of the other Starship Troopers movies. It'll make you sad, lol. The first film was SO awesome, set up such an awesome sci-fi franchise.... Then they just dropped the ball SO hard, over and over :(

Well regarding the armour there is a joke that it saw more work than the actors that used it, I know it was in a Power rangers series Lost Galaxy and Firefly at least.

This is probably my favorite Verhoeven film. But I now recommend the movie he did after this, Hollow Man, starring Kevin Bacon. Invisible man type thriller.
Hollow Man was an awful film. Great effects but poor plot and script.

Starship Troopers went campy with the movie, and predicted the internet media consumption just when the net was ascending.
However, the book itself is by Robert Heinlein, and the tone of the book is 100% different. It is a deeper dive into the psychology of the military mindset of Heinlein's time, which, true to your instincts, was during WWII, Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The book is phenomenal and really is a completely different experience, a total mind explosion centered around understanding the military mentality. A lot of fans were extremely let down with the campy adaptation, because the book was anything but.
Check it out if you enjoy reading, it's not a difficult read, but very thought-provoking.
The armor played a ginormous role in the books. And it was a supreme letdown in the movies for the book fans. Kind of like trying to redo Star Wars and giving them a butterknife instead of a light saber and then pretending like it's part of the original. Don't get me wrong, I love both movie and book, but they're two completely separate stories, and I think they would have been better cutting certain things completely out.
The whipping scene, for example. It accompanied an entire philosophical exploration and manifesto on social responsibility and a position about juvenile delinquency requiring punishment of the parents for accountability. The confrontation at his sentencing accompanied a whole philosophical exploration of deciding not to try and justify or rationalize yourself out of responsibility, but just take responsibility for exactly and only what the system accuses you of. Don't implicate yourself further in protesting your innocence.
And the lash was described for the brutal pain it inflicted, the minimum amount of permanent damage, and the shame deterrent from making it a social spectacle. The book is very heavy. And far more about the military than the bugs. Really, read it, and then watch the film again. And between the two works, I think you get a third take on the work.

The guy who has no hand and legs said that "global infantry made me the man I am today." It's kind of an anti-war movie that focuses on ultra-militarism. It often parodies the propaganda used during war. Neil Patrick Harris' uniform looked much like a Nazi officer's. It also touched on class and how rich people tend to start war and poor people tend to fight them -- especially as infantry.

One small knowledge nugget: administrative punishment in the military means that you are written up. Its a form of a soft punishment. Not in this universe!

Why bioweapons weren't used? Roach traps work well on Earth.
It was just a fluke accident.
As to the second question, in the book the war was begun, not to eliminate or defeat the bugs/aliens, but to eliminate dangererous excess population from a severely overcrowded Earth (extra-planetary colonization was just beginning, and would not help enough, in time, to save Earth from starvation & cannibalism).
@@jean-paulaudette9246 It was easier to start a galactic war than to enforce a one-child rule? Besides, once the starvation and cannibalism starts - that's when the population will go down and survival of the fittest will kick in. Might be better for humanity than going to war with bugs.

A funny silly typical, easy watching. The two brothers, "Men At Work" -Charlie Sheen, Emilio Estevez.
Or "Loaded Weapon 1" - Samuel L. Jackson amd Emelio Estevez.
Thank you! Honestly I love most genres. The only one I struggle with sometimes is comedy because of how hit or miss it can be. At least with a bad action movie or sci fi movie you can still appreciate the stunts but a bad comedy movie is harder to like because it thrives off the jokes. But that doesn't mean don't suggest comedy movies!!
It is a good popcorn movie but I hope someone does a remake sometime that is actually based on the book.

*_Klendathu Drop_* is such an awe inspiring track.
So powerful and epic, it's the kind of track that really motivates you to keep marching forward even against the greatest of odds.
From everything I've heard from Basil Poledouris' movie compositions, this is absolutely my favorite piece of music from him, excellent track.
I agree with you, as I also love the fact that despite the interpersonal conflict between some of the characters throughout the movie, that that same group of soldiers really became like true brothers & sisters in arms.
This one is also my favorite Paul Verhoeven movie, with RoboCop and Total Recall coming close behind.

*_Akira_* (1988) [Not really sure if Animation (Japanese Animation in this case) is really your thing or not, but here it is, the most ambitions animation film ever made, just bear in mind that the story is not the best part about this movie (mostly in part because the movie is a condensed version of a long-running manga of the time, that would only be completed in 1990, mind you), the definitive highlights of this movie are its exceptional visuals, the beautiful, intricately detailed and painstakingly hand-drawn animation, the exciting action sequences (sometimes gory), the imaginatively stunning and dystopian view of the future and its fantastic and evocative soundtrack. It should go without saying, but seeing as this is a Japanese film, make sure you watch it with the original Japanese voice acting along with subtitles.]

*_The Animatrix_* (2003) [If you liked _"The Matrix"_ and would like to know more about its world, its lore, and the the backstory of the series (won't go into more detail because I'm not even sure if you ever watched _"The Matrix"_ or not) then this movie is definitely for you. Just please make sure to watch this before moving on to the rest of the Trilogy (2nd and 3rd movies), as some parts of this film help bridge the gap between the 1st and 2nd movie much better and also help the viewer have a greater understanding of the overall story, again, *HIGHLY RECOMMENDED* that you watch it before the 2nd and 3rd movies in the franchise. This is an Anthology film, a compilation of nine Japanese Animation short films based on _"The Matrix"_ trilogy. The film was conceived and overseen by the Wachowskis (directors of _"The Matrix"_ trilogy), but they only wrote four of the segments themselves and did not direct any of their animation, as most of the project's technical side was overseen by notable figures from the world of Japanese Animation. Since this is a film specifically made by request and collaboration of the directors of _"The Matrix"_ trilogy (an American movie franchise) I'd say that probably the most appropriate way to watch it is with the English voice acting even though it is technically a Japanese Animation film, as in this very special case some of the actors in the Trilogy went on to reprise their roles again by lending their voices to the film.]

*_The Thing_* (2011) [Despite having the exact same name, it acts as a prequel to 1982's _"The Thing"._ Unfortunately, somewhere along production they gave up on using practical effects (which is a real shame because there is footage of how originally movie would have looked with practical effects and it was absolutely awesome, you could clearly see how it could have been a true love letter to the movie from 1982). While definitely not as great, and the CGI not quite as good as the use of practical effects could have been, it still is a nice movie that tries to explain what happened in the events preceding to 1982's _"The Thing"._ If you liked the first, I'd say that you can try and see if this one is also to your liking.]

I'm sorry for the long wall of text, but I wanted to try to give you *_SOME_* recommendations to satiate your Sci-Fi movie appetite.
The score for Starship Troopers is pretty great with an awesome power anthem during the combat drop sequence, but the scores for Robocop and Total Recall rate higher for me and are generally considered superior. Conan the Barbarian remains Poledouris's best though. It's one of those desert island scores.
I agree. I play that track when I have to do things I don't want to do an power through it.
17:00 You misunderstand. Even though there are things that you cannot do without completing Federal Service, Federal Service is "completely voluntary". Rico's parents show you can live an otherwise idyllic life without serving. Politics Girl walked down Washout Lane because she could not cope with her culpability in the death of Farm Planet Boy or perhaps fear of the punishment. You and I may think a public lashing is horrific, but Rico took it.
I wish I could remember the specs of the machines they used to render this on but it ain't even an eighth of what must have you would consider a decent gaming computer and I think the render time took close to a year if I'm not mistaken.

Great movie. Thy guy who plays Zander actually was Denis Richards (Carmen) in real boyfriend in read life at some point.Another great Paul Verhoeven movie is Hollow Man 2000. Also a very cult classic movie with the guy who plays Zim the instructor is Highlander which also with Sean Connery Rip.
I saw this at the cinema, I could not believe it was only a 15 Cert in the U.K.
You made me laugh while watching this movie, for the first time. I've seen it 4 or 5 times and have been bored beyond belief. When you said, "they poop missiles. I wish I pooped missiles." I laughed outloud!
BTW, Robocop I love!

I'm going to throw two recommendations: "Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan" and "Galaxy Quest"
all that's left is the 4 sequels, the roughnecks tv series, and the 6 part japanese ova.
also if you watch the deleted scenes on the dvd/bluy ray there is one that shows that carmen still loves rico.
NPH may seem out of place compared to what he does now, but this is the role that really reset his career from Doogie Howser into more adult things. You probably wouldn't know him for his roles today if it wasn't for this. As someone who saw it the day it came out in theaters, I know I was like "OK, NPH. Not bad, I can get on board with him." Doubt I was the only one.
There are multiple sequels, 2nd not as good, 3rd almost as good, then it goes to animation movies rather than live action but they are all worth a watch
