"Mobile Infantry made me the man I am today." In the book, he actually does have prosthetic legs and gets around fine but part of his job is to scare away candidates that aren't committed enough to risk that possibility.

To be fair, the novel is from an American in the 50s, the movie from an Dutch guy that literly survived a fascist regime from basicly my own country^^

This movie had a low budget, yet they pulled so many known Celebrities into it, CG was really impressive for it's time (better than we're getting now), and the visual/practical effects were fantastic!

I rented the DVDs and Dad viewed them before I could and he enjoyed them. But I was trying to buy the whole set, series included.
21:52 Watched this movie with a friend of mine who used to be in the VA. Upon seeing Rico being mistakenly labelled as KIA, I asked him if this kind of thing happens and he he only said, "Yeah, it happens."
As someone who saw this in theaters when I was only 11-years-old and adored the movie, it's so funny watching grown adults wince and look away at the gore and violence.
In fairness, I was obviously raised on gruesome horror films from a young age, but it always makes me giggle watching people struggle to get through this. lol

I love them both (this is, like, the only reaction channel I actually watch), but this one more than most really tells me they really only watch certain kinds of movies. Like, modern mainstream movies, mostly. Which is good for a reaction channel, but terrible for if you otherwise actually want to engage with the art (I doubt they watch any movies outside of the channel, which I get because they have a kid, but I still don't like that). I think the channel is actually actively getting in the way of them engaging with it as an art, so I obviously don't think they'll actually change that, I get it. I just find it kind of sad.

The term "Jarhead" is the nickname other branches of the service call the Marines (In addition to "Leathernecks" and "Devil Dogs"). A few nicknames for the other branches are ..... NAVY = "Swab-O" or "Swabby" (Shipboard, they always seemed to have a mop in their hands, swabbing the decks), and "Squids." ARMY = "Dog Faces," "Grunts," "Pukes," "Bullet Stoppers," and "Bush Beaters." My AIR FORCE = "Flyboys," "Airheads," "Bus-Drivers," (In reference to our blue uniforms), "Chair Force" (Because we had chill/easy jobs, compared to other services), "Wingnuts," and "Zoomies."

The former is a reference to the haircut that made their heads reesemble jars, while the latter refers to their uniform collars that they used to have. 🤔

The animated show "Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles" is a much better representation of the Novel.

This has been in my VHS collection for years and, I still enjoy watching it each year (smile...smile).
Upon first seeing NPH, the fact that Jane immediately said "Doogie Houser" makes this a good reaction.
This is actually one of my favorite movies, I consider Roughnecks: Tales of the Starship Troopers is sequel. The visual effects in this movie were very good for the time, and the practical effects were down right ground breaking.

This is one of the best 'actually good sci-fi moves pretending it's a dumb action flick'. This genre includes Predator, Total Recall, and Robocop, however THE peak of the genre is They Live which I highly recommend.

My wife had a call back to be in the scene where Johnny and Zander have their no ranks fight but family issues came up and was dropped.

The recruiter had on some great prosthetic legs and a normal looking hand. When Johnny asked why he appeared so shocking at the recruitment center, the officer said “The freak show is to weed out anyone with a weak stomach”.
I mean, the movie is explicitly a critique of the book.

19:52, jarhead is a slang term for Marines. The Mobile Infantry is essentially the Marine Corps (and a little bit of the Army) of the future. Fleet would be the Navy (in space) in the future. Traditionally Navy sailors and Marines don’t get along well.
There is a scene later in the movie in which Rico and Dizzy yell “Hooah” or “Oorah”. These are expressions of enthusiasm for the US Army and US Marine Corps.
The Bugs are CGI but everything else is practical. The environment, Space ships, landing craft etc are all practical effects.
If you read to book, a masterpiece, this movie angers you for a while. Then you start to find it's own value.
"Execution tonight at 6, all Net, all Channels" doesn't mean you CAN watch it, it means you HAVE TO! Just a subtle part of the Authoritarian future the movie depicts that people often miss.

There are in fact 5 movies. 3 live action movies and 2 cg animated movies. I haven't watched the last cg movie yet but my personal ranking of the movies goes as follows: 1. First movie, 2. 4th movie, 3. 2nd movie, 4. 3rd movie, 5th movie is inconclusive but i can be pretty damn sure it'll be better than the 3rd movie.
If you really like Star-Ship Troopers this much. Have you watched their cartoon series entitled "Roughnecks: Star-ship Troopers Chronicles"? if not you should, I own the complete series on DVD (smile...smile).

When this movie was first being advertised (for like, the first month or so), it was advertised as being rated PG-13. My dad saw those ratings, and decided to take me to see this when I was nine years old, because I had seen Die Hard and Alien, and he thought I could handle it. We got to the theater and they told us it was R, and he was like "Eh, probably not a big deal if it was PG-13 before." I was mentally scarred, lol. I had nightmares about this movie for years. I didn't even watch it again until I was a senior in high school.
You know what's absolutely hilarious? Folks who call the Terran Federation "oppressive" would have a far stronger case with calling Super Earth oppressive. Based on what I've seen and heard it's far more the case, hell looking at the contract of employment makes that clear. XD
*According to its own terms, the Helldiver is considered to have read the contract merely by walking by it, and the contract is considered binding upon being “read”.*
Meanwhile, in the Terran Federation, they do everything possible to encourage you to quit. (It's far more evident in the book as it's basically spelled out.)
Regarding Carmen and Johnny:
As the protagonist in another movie stated, ''Never chase busses or women, you'll always get left behind.''

Man ever since helldivers 2 blew up I’ve been seeing more people react to this movie and it brings me so much joy this movie meant a lot to me as a kid (Ik it’s not kid friendly, times were different back then okay) and I love helldivers 2 for that reason so I’m happy to be able to experience the birth of the game and the exposure starship troopers is getting rightfully so

Heard a rumor about the shower scene. The actors didn't want to film the scene nake unless if the cameraman is nake too so the cameraman agreed and strip down and got nake to make the actors feel better to shoot the scene.
This sounds great, the male and female actors had no problem with each other nude ...but only with the camera man still being fully dressed (smile...smile).
I liked the little touches of personality like the bully guy seeming like a meathead but he's a skilled violin player

@@khalidbinwaleed5072well the "have children" thing is clearly bullshit line by Verhoven - Heinlein makes it clear that the only difference between civvies, and citizens is the right to vote. Speaking of which - it is explained well enough, that the right to vote is literally a mandate to use force to influence the political process. That is valuable. If it was given to you for free, it would be near-worthless, but if you have to earn it, it is valuable, because you paid for it with blood, sweat, and tears (Heinlein proposes that the cost to acquire something is an integral part of its value).
Voting is a responsibility, only entrusted to those who have earned that trust. And, most importantly, there is nothing that the Federation can do to stop you from becoming a citizen - it is your constitutional right to do federal service and earn your citizenship.

Wow, you two have the strangest reaction to this movie that, I have ever seen. Watched this back when, it was new in the movie theater and, I loved it. The author of the science fiction novel this is based on, wrote the book in response to the Koren and Vietnam wars and watching young men and women run away from their duty to defend and protect their county ... so the book has a patriotic theme. However, for this movie it was decided to use both satire and humor. As someone who, was a Captain in the U.S. military for 7-yeras, my favorite line in this film is always "Service Guarantees Citizenship". Because, only Americans wiling to put their life on the line to defend and protect their county (the Peace Corps and American Corps also count, just like military service), get to enjoy the full benefits of being a citizen of the USA (smile...smile).
