26 years later and the destruction of the Rodger Young is still visually impressive.
Also, Basil Poledouris with another absolute banger of a film score.

This movie is the ultimate satire, mocking war propaganda and fascism, Nazism, xenophobic, and the military. Paul Verhoven hated the novel that movie was based on, stating that it took itself way too serious, and that it was glorifying war and violence.

    • @michaelburke750

The book was blatant satire, something Verhoven evidently doesn’t understand.

@@michaelburke750 Heinlein left readers to draw their own insights, hence the ongoing debate. I’m more strongly inclined to view it as satire, but hey, literature is nuance. Every reader finds something different between its lines.

Then what about Asimov who called it thinly veiled fascist propaganda?, or the many other authors and critics who saw the same thing?. Why did his wife try to get all mention of his name removed from the film as she stated it was antithetic and offensive to his original work?.

@@scottneil1187 As I wrote, 'Heinlein left readers to draw their own insights, hence the ongoing debate'. The (reasonable) conclusions drawn by Asimov and others are drawn from their own insights.

If you didn't already know the military recruiter portrayed by Robert David Hall who also portrayed the coroner on CSI is a real-life double leg amputee. The shot of him revealing that he has no legs was real. He was involved in a traffic accident that resulted having both his legs amputated. While on CSI he comfortably used prosthetic limbs while filming.

Soooooo many extras! The war scenes were filmed in the plains of Wyoming - had a good friend who got to experience being an extra. Went to see it a few times in the theater with him and it was a fun “where’s Waldo” experience, trying to spot him in the backgrounds.

Like most movies made from books, as good as the movie was, you really need to read the book. In the book, it turns out that Johnny's Dad was not killed and joined the MI himself. His Dad actually ended up being assigned to his son's unit.

Theory: one of the reasons we all love Diz so much is that she's probably the most human and developed character in the entire film. She keeps most of her humanity all the way to her end. Carmen on the other hand is (deliberately) portrayed as less complex and like the final incarnations of Rico and Carl at the film's end more of 2-dimensional propaganda caricature, beautiful and attractive, but emotionally detached and completely dedicated to the service. I think beneath the surface there's a tragedy in that we see Rico become less and less human over the course of the film, until by the end he's literally parroting what others say, and he and the other mobile infantry are depicted very similarly to the bugs.

My question is what was a guy in the military playing in a high school game? In the book, how the Mobile Infantry got down to the planet was much different. When the movie came out, I and my brother wondered how they were going to show that. Actually, it was Government Service, not just military. Rico (Juan Rico- he’s originally Filipino) becomes a colonel in quick succession. He’s promoted so fast because people in charge keep dying. He ends up commanding his own father alongside other older men, and IIRC teenagers from his old community. Meaning Earth is in the “drafting old men and children” phase of losing a war. Rico is just still hopeful that they can win, so the book doesn’t outright say they’re losing and people assume it’s pro the Earth Federal Government

I love the book and the film even though they are so different from each other. The book was on my suggested reading list when I was up for promotion to sergeant in the US Army. The film strays pretty far from the book. the book is more a look at a great military leader in an impossible war. The film is satire of military propaganda films. Fantastic!

I must say I really don't get it when people watch some movie from the 90's and marvel at how good the CGI is as if it's a movie that was filmed before they knew how to use a computer. 25 years ago is not a very long time, historically speaking, and even if computers are more powerful now, they still had the best imaging computers in the world when they made movies like this, and the best artists doing the work. They've been using digital animation in movies since the early 70's, so they certainly knew what they were doing by the late 90's.

Well, it is Halloween. Might as well traumatize your mom with this 90s movie that every teenager I knew waited for it to come on HBO or SuperChannel so we could see some of the naughtier scenes. 1997, man. Pre-American Pie, but everything is still pretty raunchy. It just involves mostly adults rather than teenagers. There was an erotic thriller out almost every week it felt like and Friday Nights in Canada were "Friday Nights Without Borders." This was Denise Richards' time, I guess. Wild Things, this, and the infamous role as Dr. Christmas Jones in The World Is Not Enough. I couldn't say that last one with a straight face. I couldn't at the time either, but I wasn't complaining!

Well i read the book and seen the movie and i think Paul Verhoven mistaken Fascism for military Stratocracy or libertarian Utopia because the book is very different from the movie. Because there is voting system in the Federation but only ex soldiers, police, or other emergency and military service men and women can vote. That is because stratocracy is a system where only the responsible people can vote and get into politics and state things. Meritocracy or the people who truly deserve to lead or choose another one to lead. Fascism is "guild socialism" or corporatocracy. The Fascist state basically is a big business corporation where only the wealthy and powerful can lead and the state is not interested in its citizens they use them basically as printers for money and states wealth. Basically Cyberpunk 2077 that game is very definition of fascist dystopia and their form of "socialism" or syndicalism as someone would call it. Many people just mistakes fascism for nazism or military juntas or military stratocracy. Nazism is "national socialism". Military juntas is "Military Oligarchy". Military stratocracy is basically a "Soldier's Republic". And do not mistake fascism for nazism either because these ideologies are very different from each other. National socialism is basically normal socialism but there is strong emphasis on national identity and patriotism and that is very different from normal socialism. Normal socialism or "Marxism" advocates for class equality in all nations and hates these principles of national identity and patriotism. We label national socialism as Hitler's idelogy but it is very different from its core components. Hitler's nazism is very unique sort of idelogy. Because even before Hitler there was national socialism. In my country {that is Czechoslovakia} we had a national socialist party in power before the second world war. And we were a democratic republic and the national socialist were in coalition with conservatives. Our president was a national socialist and the prime minister was conservative christian nationalist.
Thank you for reading this comment and i am very sorry if there are grammar errors i am not a native to english language. And i hope i wrote an interesting comment. Thank you for reaction video. Cheers from {former Czechoslovakia} Czech Republic.

You're wrong when you say 2 & 3 lost the point of being a satire of a fascist society. While 2 is a bad movie it keeps the message that the Federation is a self destructive fascist empire, and 3 openly paints the Federation as being the outright villains of the conflict, who use wartime deaths to fake political stunts and give them an excuse to murder peaceful protesters. It also has a message about weaponized religion and how destructive zealots can be in service of their faith.
It's a shame the third movie had such a low budget because I will honestly hold it up as being a good movie with cheap effects. It's well worth checking out, and serves as a direct sequel to this one.
As for the animated movies, they also kept the satirical nature of the first movie, in the second animated one not only is the Federation losing the war badly, but they're also internally falling apart with dissidents openly opposing the war. The plot even revolves around the Federation plotting to kill the dissidents using the arachnids as tools. All in all, Starship Troopers is one of the very few series where none of the sequels lost the plot about what the first was.

The military took over and ended wars and Poverty. Rico's parents were not citizens. They had a very rich and healthy life.

The American Republic. Don't remember what the book said about the USA, but if you look at it today, we're falling apart because of socialism and communism and stupidity. IMHO.
Read the book. With an open mind.
