    Drill Sargeant got the credit cuz he captured the bug. Yeah, Rico saw it in the cave but so did others before. He didn't actually "capture" it.
    Clancy Brown is my favorite! ❤ For me, he steals every scene in every movie he's in. I was introduced to him in Highlander. The Kurgan is legendary.

      Carl actually captured the bug by manipulating the ground troops with mind control.

    The book this movie is based on is REALLY different from the movie. I loved it, but I can definitely see why some may not have enjoyed it as much.
    The movie's real over arching theme propaganda vs reality. We watch indoctrinated kids experience the horrors of the reality of war. They start wide eyed and hormonal in high school, seeing their service as an adventure that they can dip their toe into before the rest of their life starts. This is obviously a delusion. Very quickly, they are shown the severity and traumas of war.
    The book on the other hand is sort of a study of military leadership. We meet a new recruit, Rico, and watch them become a decorated and celebrated officer. We see examples of bad leadership when he is a young recruit, but also some good. Then, as he is given more and more responsibility, we watch him grapple with his decisions. It was one of the books on my recommended reading list when I was up for promotion to SGT during my time in army. I think people without military experience, or a curiosity into what makes a good combat leader, might find it a bit boring. It does have power armored space marines though, so that is pretty neat.

      Also in the book you don't have to enter the military to earn citizenship. Then again maybe thats the thing in the movie as well, we just follow the group that decided to do the military service.

    The book is not long. You need to read it to. To Really appreciate this movie and how much they changed the movie from the original book and or from the original Hex and counter war game that was made based off the original book by Avalon Hill.

    Mind you Klendathu is on the opposite side of the galaxy, could the bugs really have aimed asteroids at Earth? I think the book hinted that they didn't have the technological capability to do so. There's some room for interpretation that the entire "Bug threat" was engineered on Earth. If the bugs didn't start the aggression, it's clear the humans provoked the innocent bug race, with them just trying to defend themselves and their planet.

      i always took it as them spraying their spore into space, while occasionally knocking debris out of the asteroid belt. i dont think it was deliberate but i do think the asteroid evaded by the Roger Young was the same to take out Buenos Ares. but it certainly is open to interpretation and thats one of the reasons Verhoeven's films are so interesting

    Lol sorry I’m a nerd and k ow too much about this so Im about to 🤓actually….
    The creators of this movie were trying to fund their movie project bug hunt at outpost 9 but couldn’t get any studios to take it. Some one recommended they pretend it was based on the book Starship troopers because Heinlein is a big scifi name so they might be able to cheat and get their movie made…which they did. Paul Verhoeven read the very beginning of the book, got triggered and called the book fascist (it’s not but not gonna wade into that argument) and decided he was gonna take some shots at the messaging behind the book he didn’t read. The end result is this absolutely amazing film that has next to nothing to do with the book. The book and the movie despite being radically different are equally good. If you like the movie chances are you’ll like the book so if you like to read please do give it a look. Also since I’m at it planet of the apes is a surprisingly good read as well.

    The director never read the book. He had someone else read it and got notes. It shows.
    There is no fascism in this movie, and definitely not in the book. They tried to make it a satire of fascism, but failed miserably.
    1. The military service was entirely voluntary, and volunteers were actually encouraged to quit constantly.
    2. The "propaganda" reels were always portraying reality, and had an unreal level of transparency between leaders and populace. Even so far as displaying differing points of view.
    3. Leadership was held accountable for their failures. All the way up to the sky marshall who was forced to resign.
    The funniest part is this was a movie made by a communist who connected national pride to fascism. Attempt to display an entire culture brainwashed by propaganda. In the end the only real propagandist in this entire dance was the communist director lol.

  • @deanthemachine7489
    @deanthemachine7489 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    56:40 The book is NOT satirical at all. Robert Heinlein was very much promoting some fascist ideals of the military being the core of society; the movie is a satire because Verhoeven grew up in the post-war Netherlands. The movie is made as “what would a propaganda action movie look like in a world where fascism *won* ?”

    • @MagsonDare
      @MagsonDare 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Heinlein published 32 novels, plus a plethora of short stories and such. He had all sorts of governments and ideologies represented in his works. Why is it that you are so certain that *this one* is the one that must reflect what he really thinks of the world? Is it not possible that a fiction author is simply telling a story?

    • @deanthemachine7489
      @deanthemachine7489 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MagsonDare Heinlein started The Patrick Henry League promoting continued above ground nuclear testing and was staunchly anticommunist. He called himself a “libertarian”, but as he aged, he kept leaning more and more militaristic and conservative. He literally wrote Starship Troopers in response to Eisenhower signing a moratorium on nuclear weapons testing with the Soviet Union. He may have explored other societal ideals and facets, but his personal actions and views in real life were exceptionally militaristic

    • @robling1937

      It is so funny to read you saying that because it was on my recommended reading list when I was up for promotion to Sergeant during my time as an infantryman in the US Army. The film is an exploration of young people being indoctrinated and surrounded by propaganda, and then sent to face the realities of war. The book is about a young leader trying to be the best leader that they can be while fighting in an implausibly horrific war. I can totally see why it wouldn't be very enjoyable if you hadn't had some of those military experiences.

    • @ThunderWolf86
      @ThunderWolf86 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      I mean this as respectfully as possible, but this is absolutely a classic case of “This book isn’t for me, so it’s trash”. It’s okay when art isn’t for you, but I personally see it as in bad taste to trash it simply because you’re not the relevant audience.

      Book is great. It is a military Sci-fi. A lot of military sci-fi books written like that. And It is my favorite genre. If you dont like it doesnt mean book is bad, only means its just not for you. And let me tell you, dont read Lord of the Rings if you ever decide to. You will find that author is obsessed over the description of every item. From regular hobbit's door to mithrill shirt. Hell, third of the book is just description of "useless" items.
