Jonny being declared dead is one of those bureaucratic foul-ups that takes weeks to fix that the military (regardless of branch or country) is infamous for.

There is a case of a Japanese kamikaze pilot; if the mission is a foul, come back to try again. This happened something like 5-6 times with one guy that on take-off they wrote him dead, repeat and then spent 30or more years 'dead' (which meant no benefits, bank account, work, veteran pay etc)

My dad, then a pastor, took me to see this when it was new. Thanksgiving Day. By the coed shower scene he looked like he was just about to give up on life. We laughed, we cried. I had a hand over my eyes more than once. Best holiday ever. Mom still doesn’t know. Secret kept dad.
Edited to add: I was 13! That bit is important, you know, for context.

The soldiers are being trained to fight against humans, because except for the bugs, they still have to fight humans from time to time. And before the bugs came, that's all they had to fight.
Johnny was only hurt in the leg by the bug. We can surmise that the bug that attacked him was probably killed before it got to him. But he only got wounded in the leg. Since it was such an unexpected mass slaughter, like with real war, it was hard to keep track of who lived and who died.

There are misreports of soldiers dying in war. It happens. I have, personally, known a man whose parents were given a telegram that he was killed in action, during WWII. They later got a telegram saying he wasn't dead, but wasn't expected to make it. A month later, they got another message saying he was wounded, but was going to be ok. So odd things do happen in the confusion right after battle.

Much like with RoboCop and Total Recall, this is a satire of many different social, political and other topics by Paul Verhoeven; this is loosely adapted from the novel of the same name by science fiction writer and US Navy veteran Robert A Heinlein, which I vastly prefer to this film; other military/war films and series you should check out are 13 Hours, Lone Survivor, Act of Valor, Black Hawk Down, Full Metal Jacket, Shooter, Tears of the Sun, Top Gun, Battle Los Angeles, The Pacific and Generation Kill

I completely agree, I read the book before the film was made and when the film came out i was quite disappointed at just how loose the film is to the book.

I grew up in a house surrounded by 50/60/70s Sci-fi and fantasy books, there were piles. When i was really young the covers grabbed me, the a bit older i tried to read them, but the concepts were a bit too far out, but by the age of 10 i was really getting into it.
Herbert, Asimov, Clarke, Aldiss, Moorcroft, McCaffrey, Dick, Tolkien, Heinlein, Andersen , Silverberg, Niven, Hubbard.....The list goes on, I grew up with quality Stories in my life and was somewhat spoilt.
One of the first books i remember the story and actually reading it is a Heinlein book called "Glory Road". I've never gone back to it as i don't want to sully my childhood memories as i really enjoyed it and i don't want to find out it was a poor story/book.
As for this film, If it wasn't called Star Ship Troopers I might have been more on board back in the day. Fun Fact: This movie was extremely hated by a lot people who loved the book when it came out. I remember my chemistry teacher bad mouthing the film during class one day. It's gotten a lot more love, understanding and respect over the years though.

The Director of this film is Paul Verhoeven, who is well known for his choice of satirical violence, most notoriously from Robocop(1987) and Total Recall(1990)
When Starship Troopers originally came out, it recieved alot of negative reviews. Cinema critics found it corny, and regular movie goers thought is silly. Both sides of the coin did not see the fortuitous social commentary the French Director was making on blind American patriotism. The film however has increasingly grown in popularity over the years and critic are finally seeing the film for what it truly is, a cleverly placed satire hidden amongst a popcorn Sci-Action movie.
The sequels however were not made by the same Director and were basically straight-to-DVD B-Grade movies.

Paul Verhoeven is Dutch, not French. Try watching his early film "Soldier of Orabge" a serious look at the Nazi Occupation of Holland during WW2, and the various reactions among the Dutch, from active resistance to Collaboration.

Wasn't a commentary on blind american patriotism, but fascism and nationalism in any form around the world. That's why they dressed the way they did and had visual aesthetics from Triumph of Will.

Another movie The Frighteners comes to mind when I watch this because of Jake Busey. I'd recommend that one to you as well. It's sort of an off-genre horror movie much as Starship Troopers to me is an off-genre scifi movie. Perhaps it's also because of the comedy aspect or quirkiness of both films that are so memorable ti me.

You have to keep in mind that at the beginning, not only are they not currently at war with the bugs, they hadn't had a war in living memory. The last human conflict was during the formation of the Terran Federation. They're not expecting to have to actually fight anybody.

It's the CGI that you can't see that is noteworthy. Casper Van Diem has a tattoo of Casper (the friendly ghost) on his bicep that they had to erase with CGI in every scene where he's shirtless.

If they had made this movie the way the original book is written, the troopers would have been armoured in mechanical rigs like they had in the movie Edge of Tomorrow.

one of the best movies I've seen (with two insanely cheap sequels). interesting fact: in the book, people use combat costumes similar to that of the iron man,and insects are also a technologically advanced civilization. But both are dropped in the film due to lack of budget for the necessary effects.
