Hollywood needs to bring back the Verhoeven squibs like in Total Recall and Robocop. Love the movie, but it is very loosely based on Robert Heinlein's novel, one of the truly great authors during the golden age of sci fi.

Paul Verhoeven is a great director, but he probably wasn't the right director for this project. His personal animus against the politics of the book caused him to satirize the $@!( out of this film.

The main problem is that Paul didn't humanize the bugs and we all kill bugs in real life.
A secondary problem is that Paul didn't show any serious advantage to being a citizen. The worst piece of legislation he tells us about is that civilians and citizens can both get birth licenses but citizens can get them easier.

19:20 in the build up to D Day they did live fire practices at Slapton Sands in Devon because the terrain was similar to Utah beach. They evacuated 3000 people from the area to keep it secret before running the practice operations that'd cover all aspects of the plan, known as Operation Tiger, which was a disaster.
During the first practice assault they planned to conduct a Naval bombardment over the heads of the landing troops to acclimatise them to the noise but the bombardment was delayed and several landing craft missed the communication resulting in about 450 casualties when they landed just as the bombardment started.
The following early morning German E Boats also managed to get past the escorts and attacked one of the troop transport convoys, sinking 3 troop transports and killing another 749 servicemen.

    57:50 Mark! Thumb Up #294! 👍 You're welcome, and thanks! 😊
Notes: I graduated from high school in 1982. At some point during my high school years, I read the library's copies of the novel, both the hardcover and the softcover, to compare and contrast. Once I learned that the paperbacks had more advertising, and that was the most significan difference, I stopped duel reading. But anyway, it was a very long wait for the movie to finally come out! I was so relieved when it finally did!
"Starlog Magazine" was keeping me up to date. 😎
Denise Richards gets to be sexier in "Wild Things"! 😘
As for the sequel movies? The sex appeal factor was reduced and more focus was on the action that was also less gorey.
Sally Struthers once told "Entertainment Tonight" that she would rather see a man kiss a woman's breast than cut it off with a chainsaw! She didn't like the connection between sex and violence!
However, those parents that shield their children from seeing anything too sexy, seem to prefer the violence. 🤷‍♂️
However, children have easier access to a home entertainment system than they do to a movie theater. So if I recall correctly, the sequel movies were much tamer just because children exist. People who wanted the adult themes to continue were probably dissatisfied. 🤔🤷‍♂️
Ironically, as I see it, before someone came up with "Unrated" as a term that people began to associate with being code for "more bare breasts" as with "The Dukes of Hazzard" for example, "Direct To Video" was thought to mean the same thing! 😁
By the way! In the "CBS" television series versions, both live-action and animated cartoon, "Daisy Duke" was oh so sexy because of her famous shorts! 😉 But the makers of the movie seemed to fail to grasp that notion! Sure, Jessica Simpson is sexy as "Daisy Duke" in her short shorts! But she had to compete with girls that actually bared their breasts and butts and even more so in the deleted scenes! But with the edited for content and time allowed version shown on regular broadcast antenna television, Daisy Duke didn't have such competition and so she was the sexiest one on screen after all!
A lot of movies did that as I recall, as they tried to appeal to as many markets as they could. 🤔 like how "Walmart" sells CDs with the explicet lyrics removed. Or they did before there was a ratings system with suitable warnings about content!

Starship Troopers 3 is closer to getting the tone right than 2, but it's direct to DVD low budget, you just are going to have to accept that the special effects aren't going to be a quarter as good as the 100 million dollar 1st movie. It features the return of Casper Van Dien as Rico.

There is a TV show. It's called Roughnecks: The Star Ship Trooper Chronicles. It was an early CGI animation designed for kids! It's very well written, and surprisingly good. Sony never finished the story... The sequels are super low budget, if you can look past that, the writing is good. The first sequel is a horror movie, the second sequel is crazy, and in a way more sci-fi. There's also some Japanese animated CGI movies that are not really tied to the movies

two are the foreign fantasy movies i watch over and over again: return of the jedi, and this one! an exciting adaptation of heinlein's great novel, strikingly close in spirit and substance to the original. i hope that when they film the book again someday, the new movie will be even better and show us the things that pol Verhoeven has changed: the insects as a technologically advanced civilization equal to humans and the earth soldiers in their armored flying energy suits!(johnny rico: - wearing his suit, the fighter looks like of a hydrocephalic gorilla armed with gorilla-sized weapons..😊)

I am on board with Carmen being a bad news in every way. Her arrogant changes to course orbiting Jupiter cause her ship to almost be destroyed and lose comm equipment so they could not warn Earth about incoming asteroid.
The movie and the book are way different. The book was written by a WWII vet who wrote about Rico as a boy who grows up into a man. The Space and Bugs as enemy were basically just setting, not the focus. Paul Verhoeven could not finish the book as he did not like the conservative leaning of the book, he read maybe three chapters before deciding to do his own thing. So he took names and descriptions and made a parody. His idea was that he would show this dystopia of population control and totalitarian warmongering and show it working well and let audience work out for themselves what is wrong with the situation. He was surprised how many people took it not as a cautionary tale, but as something to emulate.

Big dump of facts off the top of my head.
The director was too bored of the book so he didn't even read past the 1st chapter. It was mostly about training and politics and little about actual combat.
During the shower scene even the director went naked to be fair to the actors.
The main characters were chosen because they were good looking and looked like they came out of a Nazi German propaganda posters.
The uniforms are meant to look like WW2 German uniforms. Karl's Colonel's uniform looks like a strait up SS uniform.
The guy that got his head shot off in training, married the woman that shot him. I don't know if they are still together.
Johnny Rico is actually Filipino in the books.
When the ships get blown in half, those are scale models, not CGI.
The director of the movie made this to be a satire about Fascism, he did everything so over the top that he assumed the audience would get the joke. But many people like it unironically.
Carmen Ibanez (Denise Richards) is ALWAYS SMILING except when she get's injured, for a moment. Charlie Sheen did her so wrong.. absolutely gorgeous women from the 90s... that hair. That's not a movie fact.. it's just a fact.
The soundtrack is just amazing, same guy that composed the score to Conan the Barbarian. Basil Poledouris

It was INTENDED to be a satire of Fascism, except Verhoeven doesn't understand the difference of Fascism and Militarism. Especially, Militarism in the middle of a war. That's why so many people turned this into a cult classic, because the movie is only dressed in Fascism. Fascists don't tell the truth about war. They wouldn't broadcast the defeat at Klendathu. The Sky Marshal wouldn't take responsibility and step down. At no point does the media misrepresent what happens. What is shown is a prosperous meritocratic society based in freedom.

The "oath of service" in the movie is literally taken word-for-word from the book, which according to Heinlein himself illustrated his ideal society - no joke. People say the book is what a scary parody of a fascist hellscape looks like, but this is what late-life Heinlein actually desired (in his younger years he had a rather opposite bent from what I understand.) The book is written like an instruction manual to indoctrinate and radicalize the reader to accept a world where there is no democracy anymore. It's as clever as it is insidious - he did the same thing in his previous novel, "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" - which is legit a bangin' good story btw, unlike Starship Troopers which is wooden and filled with page after page of propagandistic jingoism and long descriptions of mundane military life in the supposed future.
Anyway... In "The Moon...", you have a character called Professor Bernardo De La Paz. *Professor*. The book sets him up as an intellectual and an authority figure on...well, everything pretty much. "Professor" De La Paz is the main conduit to the reader of some seriously out there political ideas (the tamest of which can probably be labelled as ultra-extreme libertarianism, where taxing someone is THE worst crime imaginable against humanity - not genocide, but TAXES!) His analog in Starship Troopers the novel is a series of instructors giving a great many lessons in "history and moral philosophy", which is essentially an authoritarian's view of society, and how the individual should be obedient and subservient and willing to sacrifice themselves for the sake of the state - up to and including giving their life.
Nice, eh? The movie retains some of that (like the school class at the beginning of the movie, for example), but most has been sanitized, largely because Verhoeven thought the book was sh-te, and because of his own experiences growing up under Nazi Germany's occupation in the Netherlands during WWII. So what we get instead is a very gory satire where one of the cast members ends up wearing essentially a Gestapo uniform to make a not very subtle point... ;)
(Well to be quite honest, nothing in this movie is at all subtle. lol!)
