    Even though M16's performance is hard to against ROG Scar or G series, it's portability is designed for a plenty of customers. I guess MSI stealth 14 studio or stealth 15 would be the strongest competitor this year. If possible, can you also take a review on stealth 14 in the future video, especially for the pure white one. Thank you.

  • @joelconolly5574

    In terms of a 16 inch laptop with an almost full wattage GPU, this is pretty much up there. HX doesn't offer too much of a performance unless you want those extra E-cores. Still, it's solid, but the mini-LED is probably only offered by the higher end 4090. Hopefully the 4080 can be paired with that panel too. I think for a thin laptop, this is as good as it gets.

    • @NotebookcheckReviews
      @NotebookcheckReviews  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It is an insane amount of power in such a compact chassis. That said, performance differences between this and the Neo 16 or Titan are sometimes very significant.

    Just ordered ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 17, WQHD 240hz 17,3“ Display, RTX 4090 16GB Vram, Ryzen9 7945HX, 32 GB RAM, 2 TB SSD For "only" 3300€ / 3500$.
    I think that is a very fair price for the the given specs and power.
    It's a way better power per buck ratio then the old generation laptops.
    The 4090 mobile is better than the highend desktop gpu from 30s gen with only one third of the power used.
    Had to go with the Ryzen bc of the high power increase within AMD CPUs. The 7945HX will be a good choice next to the highest Intel with less power used. Since the 7845 with 33% less cores than its higher Brother is only 10 percents behind the 13980HX Intel.

      @@Optora. Ive had it a few days now. it's amazing
      To be fair I was upgrading from a 7 year old MSI GT72S GTX 980M/Intel i7-6820hk so the difference in performance is absolutely wild.
      Some thoughts so far:
      - No numberpad is a choice I made, & will take some getting used to, but I chose the more mature, muted M16 with the better screen, over the childish/overly gamer G18 aesthetic + numpad
      - Battery life is just shit. I mean the most ive had so far is probably 3 hours? I guess I have to hope that modern battery management will prevent degradation over time.
      - The screen is amazing, might be the best screen ive seen just from laptops ive seen in stores that stock high end laptops
      - The power on this thing is surprising, for such a small , kind of incognito look... the 4080 suprises me in what it can actually do.
      I love the laptop, I don't think i'll return it. I was maybe going to return it to consider a better value buy with the G18 4070, but the 4070 benchmarks look terrible, & the extra money spent on the 4080 M16 with the mini led display is worth it for me.
      Costly though, £3300 is no joke.

My subjective impression is that people fall into the trap of thinking in relative terms. Sure, 13th gen is better than 12th gen and 4000 series is better(?) than 3000 series... But if the older gen in a vacuum is still enough, still does the job, why spend this amount of money? Rhetorical question. Anyway, waiting to see you streaming again.

    Honestly, I'd say this year's releases have lost some of the luster from the previous gen due the absurd prices. Maybe it's because I'm coming from a 3rd world perspective, but a ~1500 USD/Euro pricing for something like a 6800H (or 12700H) and 3070Ti combo that is largely similar to a desktop 3060 Ti, which in itself is a bit better than a 2080 Super seems *crazy*. It's expensive as hell, but it's somewhat achievable and not that far off of the desktop setup it matches, especially considering screen and keyboard are included. There is the expected laptop premium, sure, but it's just that- a premium. An extra tax.
    Something costing three, four or even five thousand USD/Euro, on the other hand, that *should* be even more impressive due being a 3090 desktop setup that you can carry on a 2 cm thick laptop- and honestly, even typing it "out loud" makes it seem like a fanciful claim- doesn't pack as much of an emotional punch, because it's like seeing a half a million dollar Ferrari blazing through a race track- it's insanely fast, but that's kind of expected.
    Of course, I don't expect you guys to do a review from this point of view, but just for perspective, 5000 euro, which might seem a fairly big chunk of money in Europe or NA, is *twenty two months of minimum wage* in Brazil. And that's before considering that, after taxes, that's going to look like FOUR YEARS of minimum wage.
    Over here, RTX 3060 and RX6600 are the equivalent of ~2000 USD cards for the average US citizen.
    So I'm really critical every time manufacturers hike prices on eletronics. There is little point in more performance if it still has the same price:performance ratio, or close enough. Or even when it's better, but the startup cost is on another tier entirely so it doesn't terribly matter- one's options haven't changed when any of these is the case.
    On another note, I really like when laptop reviews compare to desktop cards and processors, because there is way less variance in terms of performance on desktop products. Sure, a given model might be 5% faster than reference card, but by and large you know what to expect from any given model by its chip. It's *much* easier to grasp "oh, this is about a RX 6700 or RTX 3070 in performance", while "this is 20% faster than that other brand's other laptop from last year" is far more abstract- and I watch laptop reviews for fun!
    So please, keep doing comparisons to desktop CPUs and GPUs.
    And while I'm writing this giant essay of a post, I will take a moment and say that NVIDIA should be called out for putting a cut-down 4080 chip on a laptop and calling it a 4090. It just seems very dishonest.

    • @NotebookcheckReviews
      @NotebookcheckReviews  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Igor, thanks a lot for your comment and especially for your perspective. We try to keep all of this in mind, but coming from Europe, I am still somewhat "limited" in my perspective and how I evaluate value.
      That said, I totally agree with you regarding the pricing of these new high-end laptops.
      While it might be worth it for some that use these for work, for a pure entertainment use-case, it is pretty crazy to spend that kind of money.
      As for the whole desktop/laptop naming discussion, I differ slightly on that matter. I do not think a laptop 4090 should necessarily be as fast or close to a desktop 4090. And if Nvidia had put a desktop 4090 die into a laptop, well, the 4090 costs more than 2000,- alone, so the laptop variant would have been even more expensive than that.
      While we put the RTX 4090 in perspective with desktop cards in our initial XMG Neo 16 review, I wonder if that makes sense in general. Only some people do have the knowledge about desktop cards to put that info in perspective, but I will keep it in mind and discuss it with the team.

    • @TotallyNotEvil910
      @TotallyNotEvil910 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NotebookcheckReviews
      Oh yeah, in terms of absolute performance, these are mindblowingly fast, no doubt. It's a bloody *3090* on pretty thin and light chassis. I don't doubt there are desktop 3090s whose volume matches that of this entire laptop.
      On the naming matter, it feels to me like NVIDIA will very likely releate a 4090 Ti that has a cut down 4090 die on their mid-life refresh, maybe next year. The current laptop 4090 could have simply been the laptop 4080. It's a bit of a silly thing, but I feel that's somehow more honest. By cheapening out on the die, feels like they didn't put as much effort as they are saying they put in, somehow? I don't know, it's a silly sticking point.
      And sure, not everyone has knowledge of desktop cards- however! There are dozens of reviews in every nationality for any single model of desktop card, while some laptops can have a single review in the entirety of the internet at some points. The fact that desktop parts are immensely more consistent model-to-model is icing on the cake. You could approach this any number of ways- build a desktop system or two that you feel are very representative for their class, for example, and only bench against that. That's an easy one-and-done, but already it'd give every single review you put out that solid footing of the desktop benchmark. I think just having a staple system to compare against would add much richness to the information in your reviews. Maybe something high-end-ish, but not all the way there, like a 7900 XT or a 4070 Ti, or something last gen like a 6800 XT or 3080.
      For example, when it comes to last-gen machines, something in the ballpark of a 5800X and 3060 Ti system would give very useful margins for the majority of gaming laptops. The various 3060 ones are not that far away from a desktop 3060, the many 3070/Ti ones are pretty close to the 3060 Ti, the ones higher than that are around desktop 3070 performance. So a system around the mid-high end would give useful- as in, easily contextualized margins no matter the product you reviewed. You could build a system like this going foward! The fact that there is a *lot* of legacy data for desktop cards all around, techpowerup in special, also helps a lot. Because, say I know what a 3060 Ti can do, but I'm not sure how that compares to a theoretical 4070 Ti system that you might put together. I can very easily check a % comparison in their GPU database and get a rough idea.
      Another benefit is that every game lists requirements in deskptop parts, so it also becomes much easier to tell how well a given notebook will meet given requirements.

    Someone said 5000 euros for a laptop that has a 4090 and an i9-13900H cpu?
    They probably should have crammed a desktop cpu inside it if they wanted to justify that kind of price.

    Look like the 4070 is going to have less power than the 3070 variant of laptop. I currently have the Legion 5 with 130 watts .It plays everything I want over 80fps at 1440p .I simply couldn't justify spending more on a gaming laptop than a decent 2nd hand car !!!!

      I am torn, to be honest. It really depends on what you are currently using. The performance gains are pretty substantial, even coming from something like a 3070 or something. But yeah, cost is another thing. If you just game, I wouldn't spend the money, but the 4080/4090 offer a lot for work.

      @NotebookcheckReviews I have a really really old laptop that has a 7th gen i7 and a gtx1050ti. I bought it for $800USD about 5 or 6 years ago. I was thinking about upgrading to a laptop with a 13th Gen i7 and at least a 4060, but I am seeing that the 4060 doesn't provide much value, so I will wait around and look at some reviews (whenever that happens), to determine if I should just build a desktop.
